Black SabbathTechnical Ecstasy ... CD
Warner, 1976. Used ... $4.99
The cover here looks a bit slicker than some of the other Black Sabbath albums of the 70s – but the sound is anything but, and still flies the flag of all the greatness the group had to offer! The set was recorded at the famous Criteria Studios in Miami – home to some great soul sessions in the early part of the decade – and Tommy Iommi gives the band a sharp edge in the studio, bringing the guitars up and Ozzy's vocals into a nice sort of focus – reminding the world that Sabbath can still kick the ass of newcomers like AC/DC when needed. And like late 70s material by Led Zeppelin, which some purists of the time tend to dismiss – from the backward perspective of 40 years, the album sounds pretty darn great to our ears! Titles include "She's Gone", "Dirty Women", "It's Alright", "Gypsy", "Back Street Kids", "You Won't Change Me", and "All Moving Parts". CD

Black SabbathParanoid ... CD
Warner, 1971. Used ... $3.99
Quite possibly the greatest moment of genius ever from Black Sabbath – and a genre-changing record that influenced generations! The group are at their lean, raw best here – free from any cliches at all, and working in an incredibly heady brew of fuzzy guitar, romping bass, and dark drums – all topped by the instantly recognizable screech of the young Ozzy Osborne! Guitarist Tony Iommi virtually redefines rock use of the guitar with this record alone – and the Oz follows suit with some of the creepiest vocals set to record ever. Titles include the classics "Paranoid" and "Iron Man", plus "War Pigs", "Planet Caravan", "Electric Funeral", "Hand Of Doom", and "Rat Salad". CD

Warner/Columbia, 1977. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of just a couple of albums by Leonard Cohen from the 80s – certainly an underappreciated one, in regard to his late 60s and early 70s canon – and that's a shame, because this is pretty brilliant stuff! Stylistically, there's sparse folk pop, some steel guitar twang and then modern production touches that can't mess it up, thanks to the weight and gravity of Cohen's own voice and the beautiful female backup. Titles include "The Night Comes On", "The Captain", "If It Be Your Will", "Dance Me To The End Of Love", "Coming Back To You" and "Hallelujah". CD

Alice CooperLove It To Death ... CD
Straight/Warner, 1971. Used ... $2.99
The third album from Alice Cooper and perhaps the first great one – starting the 70s sleaze show win streak with the massive "I'm Eighteen" and an LP full of great, gritty and grimy rock and roll. Bob Ezrin's producing for the first time, and if the songs and the whole show isn't yet as menacingly theatrical as it would get to be in the following couple of years, the angry anthemic vibe is here and it's heavy! Other tracks include "Caught In A Dream", "Hallowed Be My Name", "Black Juju", "Is It My Body", "Second Coming", "Ballad Of Dwight Fry" and "Sun Arise". CD

Deep PurpleFireball (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Warner (Japan), 1971. Used ... $13.99
A definite fireball from the legendary early lineup of Deep Purple – a record that has the group soaring to the skies in a blazing blend of guitars, keyboards, bass, and drums! A set like this is seminal for understanding just how far rock music stepped in just a few short years – because back in the mid 60s, these guys might have been slavishly laying out blues riffs, or trying to copy their American heroes – but those roots are completely subsumed in the band's own style, and delivered with a dexterity that's truly amazing – a brash, balls-out quality that should be given everything it's trying to claim – because a record like this doesn't need to answer to anyone! Titles include "Fireball", "No No No", "Anyone's Daughter", "Demon's Eye", "The Mule", and "No One Came". CD

Everly BrothersRoots ... CD
Warner/Collectors Choice, 1968. Used ... $14.99
Sublime country rock and superb vocals from the Everly Brothers – an album as close to our hearts as the much more hipster-celebrated work of the era by Gram Parsons, the Byrds and others! The Everlys grasped onto their significance throughout the 60s by hopping from trend to trend with little success – but they finally nailed it in 1968 with this effort. (Artistically, if not commercially.) The boys apply their staggering harmonies to country and country-ish material, adding their own unique spin to the tunes – and earnestly work in some montages of their family radio shows from the early 50s! It's easily their most endearing work of the 60s. Produced by Lenny Waronker with strings by Nick DeCaro. Includes wonderful versions of Jimmie Rodgers' "T For Texas", "Shady Grove", Randy Newman's "Illinois", Ray Price's "You Done Me Wrong", Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" and "Sing Me Back Home", plus "Ventura Boulvard" and "Turn Around" written by Ron Elliot of Beau Brummels. One of the most classic albums of the 70s – a never-ending hit that's continued to inspire generations! Back in the early years of punk, we were thinking that Rumours was a record that would pass by quickly – but it turns out to have a fair bit more staying power than Never Mind The Bollocks – and continues to get new interest and new appreciation as the years go on! And, after decades, we're finally on board with the greatness of the record, and everything the group was going through, and put into the songs within – a classic lineup that includes "Dreams", "Don't Stop", "Never Going Back Again", "Go Your Own Way", "The Chain", "You Make Loving Fun", "Oh Daddy", and "Gold Dust Woman". Warner, 1969. Used ... $5.99
An early Warner Brothers classic from the Grateful Dead – a set that has them stretching out in maybe a more collaborative way than usual – using a few key guests to expand their freewheeling sound! The larger posse is pictured on the back cover, with a down to earth image that's a nice contrast to the trippy vibe of the front – and that may well be the best illustration of the group's changing spirit during this key year – as they shake off a bit of the hippie stink, and settle into even more serious musicianship overall. Titles include "Cosmic Charlie", "China Cat Sunflower", "Doin That Rag", "Mountains Of The Moon", and "Dupree's Diamond Blues". CD

Grateful DeadSkeletons In The Closet – The Best Of The Grateful Dead ... CD
Warner, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $3.99
The long strange trip the Grateful Dead began with Warner Bros in the late 60s culminated in this concise, pretty darn solid attempt at an early Best Of, appropriately called Skeletons In The Closet! The Dead would never be best known for their studio recordings, but this really is a good reminder that the band wrote and recorded a lot of wonderful songs in their heyday that feel uniquely, distinctively Dead even in the 3 to 6 minute studio versions. It's a worthy reminder of that for eternal fans, and an even better gateway to Dead fandom for newcomers. Includes "Truckin'", "Sugar Magnolia", "St. Stephen", "Uncle John's Band", "Casey Jones", "Mexicali Blues", "Turn On Your Love Light", "One More Saturday Night", "Friend Of The Devil" and more. CD

Rickie Lee JonesRickie Lee Jones (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Warner (Japan), 1979. Used ... $29.99
Sure, Rickie Lee Jones went onto become a bit of a cliche in later years, but this early album's still got an undeniable power – and was a great breath of fresh air, at a time when it seemed like most of modern music was forgetting its roots! What is it with the LA scene from the 60s onward that they always seemed to find their best inspiration in the past? Artists like Harpers Bizarre, Randy Newman, Tom Waits and others set the stage for a record like this – by reaching back into older styles and bringing them forward with a more contemporary spin. (And why was it that LA seemed to be the center of this mode – and New York, Chicago, and other cities never worked that way?) Rickie serves up a nice assortment of older-styled vocal cuts – performed with a mixture of traditional and 70s jazz backings, supported by some extra-classy Warner production from Lenny Waronker. Titles are all originals, but done with an older hipser sort of feel – and titles include "Easy Money", "Chuck E's In Love", "Young Blood", "The Last Chance Texaco", "Danny's All Star Joint", "Weasel & The White Boys Cool", "Company", "Coolsville", and "On Saturday Afternoons In 1963". Warner, 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The third album from Little Feat – and one that brings a bit of Crescent City rock and soul into the mix – but it's still Little Feat, so it's got a restless creative energy that's beautifully tough to classify! There's quite a bit of soul influences in the mix – especially the tunes with the female chorus backing vocals. Not a Dixie rock cliche to be found anywhere on it, either! The last album of the 70s by Little Feat – and it's a strange one! On one hand, Little Feat is revisiting some of their country rock and New Orleans-inspired songs of years past – as well as the self-conciously oddball humor. But they're also working in a tighter, leaner and cleaner studio sound than on the previous albums. ✨✧ Modern Folk QuartetModern Folk Quartet ... CD
Warner/Collectors Choice, 1963. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A much cooler folk group than usual for the time – thanks to great work from a young Jerry Yester and Chip Douglas – both of whom create all the right hip currents to live up to the "modern" in their name! The group definitely have that folk harmony style of the time – but there's a lot more complexity to their music than some of the pop groups – really amazing criss-crossing of vocals that hints at some of the broader directions post-folk groups would take their lyrics in the late 60s! Production is wonderful – clean, clear, and robust without overstating itself – and the group turn in a beautiful reading of "It Was A Very Good Year", plus "Pennies", "To Catch A Shad", "Lee Lo", "Yes I See", "Home Is Where The Heart Is", "Brandy", and "Ox Driver" (Folk/Country, Rock) CD

One of the great albums from Van Morrison during that incredible peak period – and a record that stands out as a less emotionally fraught effort after the heavy mood of Astral Weeks and the super far-reaching Moondance albums. Here Van concentrates a bit more on his love of R&B, but still with some soaring touches. Van MorrisonMoondance ... CD
Warner, Early 70s. Used ... $2.99
Maybe the greatest album ever from Van Morrison – and a set that broke into a whole new side of his talents! Van's producing himself on the record – not really in the conventional role as a producer, but in a way that has him really writing most of the album as he goes along in the studio – using core ideas for tunes, and fleshing them out in a relatively spontaneous way with the musicians involved – at a level that also shows some of the most jazzy elements of Morrison's music to date! That approach is heard to key effect in the sublime title cut "Moondance" – but it also echoes over the course of the whole album's stellar set list – tracks that include "Caravan", "Into The Mystic", "Come Running", "Glad Tidings", and "And It Stoned Me". A very powerful little session from Joanie Sommers – and like most of her work from the time, one that's done in a great blend of jazz and mainstream pop! The album's overflowing with tracks, all recorded by producer Richard Perry while Tim was strumming and singing at London's Royal Albert Hall – reworking old songs with a very strange vibe, leaving his imprint on some more contemporary numbers, and acting maybe more like an entertainer than you'd hear on record. ✨✧ Jerry WilliamsGone ... CD
Warner/Real Gone, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the only albums ever cut by Jerry Williams – a Texas-bred songwriter whose work was covered by many, but who hardly ever got a spot in the limelight on his own! The set's from the late 70s, but has more of a mid-decade appeal overall – that point when country-styled rock was getting some tighter studio production, but never in a way that was commercial or trying for a hit – just that kind of Warner or Elektra focus that really helped a singer/songwriter find their own space. In other words, had the set come out in 1974, it may well have hit a lot greater fame over the years – as its certainly got the staying power of a lot of other Texas/LA hybrids from the time – especially with songwriting this strong. Titles include "Gone", "Easy On Yourself", "Call To Arms", "Getting Stronger", "Philosophizer", "Talk To Me", and a very unusual remake of Horace Silver's "Song To My Father". CD

Van MorrisonIt's Too Late To Stop Now (Volume 1) ... CD
Exile/Sony, 1973. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
Van Morrison at the height of his solo powers – working here in an extended live set that opens up with all the genius for vocal expression and inflection he developed during his initial solo years at Warner Brothers! The setting is perfect to show the growing confidence Morrison has in his talents – an unbridled sense of soul that comes on even more strongly on some of these versions than on earlier takes of the tunes in the studio – especially as they mix with a few great covers here that further illustrate the wide range of inspirations that Van brings into his music. Backing is by a tight, soulful combo – and tracks include "Domino", "Wild Children", "I Believe To My Soul", "I Just Want To Make Love To You", "These Dreams Of You", "Into The Mystic", "Warm Love", "Saint Dominic's Preview", "Bring It On Home To Me", "Listen To The Lion", "Gloria", "Cyprus Avenue", "Caravan", and "Take Your Hand Out Of My Pocket". Randy NewmanGood Old Boys (remastered with bonus CD) ... CD
Reprise/Rhino, 1974. Used 2CD ... $16.99
A gem of an album from Randy Newman – a masterpiece of understated with from the mid 70s, and one of his most fully-conceived records for Warner Brothers! The album offers up a vision of the south, past and present, through Newman's eyes – eyes that are partially clouded by the distance of the scene seen from the vantage point of smoggy LA, but which still manage to pull out various strands of life with surprising poignancy. It's easy to write this one off as some sort of slap against the face of the backward south in the 70s, but Newman actually approaches his subjects with some sort of subtle tenderness – not nearly as mean as you might think on first listen, as evidenced by the beautiful orchestrations he penned for the sessions. Titles include "Birmingham", "Marie", "Rednecks", "Louisiana 1927", "Rollin", "Back On My Feet Again", and "Wedding In Cherokee County". CD features a bonus demo version of "Marie" – and a great set of notes! Bonus disc is titled Johnny Cutler's Birthday, and includes 13 tracks! CD
