Ides Of MarchFriendly Strangers – The Warner Brothers Recordings (Vehicle/Common Bond/bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 19.98
Both full Warner Brothers albums by this excellent group – plus bonus tracks too! First up is Vehicle – the debut album from Ides Of March – a group who will forever be known for the jazzy grooving title hit – "Vehicle", a brassy driving number that seems as if it's always being used in some sort of car commercial (which must net these guys a lot of royalties!) – but which is usually mistaken by others for being the work of Blood Sweat & Tears! Like BST, Ides Of March have a really driving sound here – pushing forward with heavy drums, sharp bits of brass, and a great early jazz rock sound that's way better than most work by the competition in years to come! Tracks include "Vehicle", "Wooden Ships", "Home", "Bald Medusa", "One Woman Man", and "Symphony For Eleanor".. Next is Common Bond – a great second set from Ides Of March – proof that the jazz rock combo had a lot more going on than just their famous single! The sextet hailed from the same scene as early Chicago (Chicago, of course!) – and have here a sound that shares plenty of the jazzy flourishes of that better-known group – blasting trumpet lines that soar, dip, and turn alongside the more uptempo tunes, and shade in the mellower ones. But there's also a more personal approach to this set overall, one that comes from the rough vocals of James Michael Peterik and some of the surprisingly heartfelt lyrics to a few of the album's best tunes – not entirely the height of early 70s singer/songwriter material, but also not that far either. Titles include the funky "Superman", plus "LA Goodbye", "Mrs Grayson's Farm", "Friends Of Feeling", "We Are Pillows", "Freedom Sweet", and "Tie Dye Princess", an extended number that runs for over 11 minutes. 2CD set also features singles tracks "High On A Hillside", "Lead Me Home Gently", and "Melody". Phil Alvin with Sun Ra & Dirty Dozen Brass BandUnSung Stories ... CD
Warner/Big Beat (UK), 1986. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Maybe the strongest solo project ever from Phil Alvin – a late 80s effort dedicated to the romping R&B sounds of the 50s – done with great help from both the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the Sun Ra Arkestra! A number of cuts are from the glory days of the R&B single – and the approach moves between tracks with Alvin's combo, one with the Dirty Dozen, and three especially nice tracks with the Arkestra! Given the way that Sun Ra's 80s material was often dipping back into earlier generations of jazz, the group make for a very strong fit with Phil's approach – on titles that include "Someone Stole Gabriel's Horn", "Titanic Blues", "Collins Cave", "Death In The Morning", "Next Week Sometime", and "The Old Man Of The Mountain". AmericaHarbor ... LP
Warner, 1977. Near Mint- ... $2.99
A lesser-remembered album from America, and one with some surprisingly nice moments, too! The group here are still working with producer George Martin – but they're recording in Hawaii, with some tight studio help – and almost hitting that sound they helped inspire in so many others with their earlier records – a perfect warm, mellow, seventies mode that's mighty nice throughout! A few tunes almost bring in an undercurrent of funk – more of a bit of a punch at the bottom, with less of the fragile acoustic modes of before – although a few nice tracks still have those in place as well. Drummer Willie Leacox brings in a nice kick to the set – and titles include "God Of The Sun", "Sergeant Darkness", "Sarah", "These Brown Eyes", "Don't Cry Baby", "Hurricane", and "Now She's Gone". Laurie AndersonBig Science ... LP
Warner, 1982. Very Good+ ... $6.99
One of the greatest albums to come from the New York underground of the early 80s – even if it was a relatively big "hit" on a major label! Laurie Anderson is in perfect form here – drawing on a strong tradition of avant garde performance, but without any of the indulgences that would mire down performance art in years to come. Instead, she's got a clean, clear style that's simply amazing – spoken passages that are poetic and pointed, but which also have a slight undercurrent of wit – a charming quality that never takes itself too seriously, even when the sounds and styles are somewhat dark. Instrumentation includes some great rhythm passages from David Van Tieghem, plus surprising performances from Rufus Harley on bagpipes and George Lewis on trombone. Titles include "From The Air", "Big Science", "O Superman", "Born Never Asked", "Walking & Falling", "Example #22", "Let X = X", and "It Tango". LP, Vinyl record album

AssociationAssociation ... LP
Warner, 1969. Sealed Gatefold ... $4.99
Really great work by The Association – a back-to-basics effort that has the group handling most of the instrumentation themselves, in a way that often gives the set a surprisingly intimate feel! Sure, these are the guys who virtually invented candy-coated Sunshine Pop – but they're also a heck of a great group at the core, and move here into some of the looser, more relaxed modes of the Warner Brothers scene at the time – a setting that really helps them bring a hell of a lot of personality to the music. Harmony vocals still soar out beautifully when needed, and the arrangements and songwriting show a lot more signs of their association with the hip LA scene of the 60s – a maturation that really pushes their sound forward in a wonderful way. Titles include "Broccoli", "The Nest", "Love Affair", "Boy On the Mountain", "Under Branches", "Goodbye Forever", and "Yes I Will". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the harder to find LPs by this fantastic pop harmony group from LA. You already know their hits from other LPs, but this one's got a bit more of a rock sound, and some excellent groovy production by Bones Howe. All of the tracks are originals, and they've got nice groovy themes, as you'll guess from titles like "The Bus Song", "Birthday Morning", "Barefoot Gentleman", "Toymaker", and "Rose Petals, Incense, & A Kitten"! Association/Charles FoxGoodbye Columbus – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Warner, 1969. Very Good+ ... $1.99
A groovy groovy soundtrack that contains one of the Association's greatest songs! "Goodbye Columbus" may not be as famous as some of their bigger hits – but we love it to death, and it's the kind of catchy groover they'll find us singing in the coffin long after we've passed away! The soundtrack features the vocal version of the track – as well as some other vocal numbers like "It's Gotta Be Real" and "So Kind To Me". Plus, the soundtrack's also got some excellent instrumental numbers that are in the best spirit of the group's music – with loads of dreamy arrangements and light lilting pop melodies. Tunes include "Love Has A Way", "A Moment To Share", "A Time For Love", and "How Will I Know You?". LP, Vinyl record album

B-52sWild Planet ... LP
Warner, 1980. Very Good ... $12.99
They may look goofy on the cover, but the young B-52s are incredible here – working with this spare sense of power that almost makes us think that we didn't need most of what happened in rock and roll during the 70s – given the way these guys can distill a mood or moment down to just a few deft instrumental turns and offbeat lyrics! The record's not punk, but it's also not new wave either – at least in the conventional way – and there's a darkness here that goes way past any simple cliches you may have associated with the band – a haunting feel that transcends most of what they were ever capable of in later years. We might even say this one tops their debut – and titles include "Party Out Of Bounds", "Dirty Back Road", "Runnin Around", "Give Me Back My Man", "Private Idaho", "Devil In My Car", "Quiche Lorraine", "Strobe Light" and "53 Miles West Of Venus". Beach BoysHolland ... LP
Brother/Warner, 1972. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A great early 70s entry from The Beach Boys – and a record that's nicely balanced between mature pop tunes and more experimental moments! The set kicks off with the sublime "Sail On Sailor" – a tightly compressed, wonderfully catchy number that's easily one of the group's greatest of the decade – and other tracks range from gentle ballads to playful numbers to others that explore more spiritual themes. All group members contributed tunes, and helped in production, but somehow we feel the tighter hand of Brian Wilson behind it all. Titles include "Sail On Sailor", "The Trader", "Funky Pretty", "Only With You", "Leaving This Town", and the "California Saga". LP, Vinyl record album

Warner/Run Out Groove, 1967. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $24.99 32.99
A crucial album in the sound of late 60s Warner – recorded by west coasters The Beau Brummels in the heart of Tennessee, at the legendary studios of country producer Owen Bradley! This meeting of west and country is fantastic – a really incredible extension of earlier folksy rock styles forged by Dylan, Fred Neil, Tim Buckley, and others – handled with incredible care, and a style that's equally honest and ironic – but coming together with a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of – one of those rare few albums that somehow draws from a wealth of inspiration, but manages to make something completely standout in the process – almost a Feelies/Good Earth for its own generation! Tremendous stuff – and titles include "Jessica", "Bless You California", "I'm A Sleeper", "Little Bird", "Turn Around", and "An Added Attraction". Very cool double LP reissue – with loads of bonus tracks that include "Long Black Veil", "Confessions (demo)", "High There", "Deep Water (alt version)", "Love Can Fall A Long Way Down (alt mix)", "Bittersweet", "Jessica (alt version)", "Tan Oak Tree", "Just A Little Bit Of Lovin (demo)", "I Love You Mama (alt version)", "I'll Be Your Baby (alt version)", and "Lift Me (alt take)". Huge, dark, and heavy – an album of mythical proportions, and that's a lot to say for a mainstream album – especially one that crossed over as big as this one! It would be hard to imagine the modern rock landscape without this album or group, who provided the template for so much music to follow – and the soundtrack to many bong-fueled excursions to the dark side – a huge legacy in sound, but one that may well still be best begun on this landmark self-titled album! Quite possibly the greatest moment of genius ever from Black Sabbath – and a genre-changing record that influenced generations! The group are at their lean, raw best here – free from any cliches at all, and working in an incredibly heady brew of fuzzy guitar, romping bass, and dark drums – all topped by the instantly recognizable screech of the young Ozzy Osborne! Guitarist Tony Iommi virtually redefines rock use of the guitar with this record alone – and the Oz follows suit with some of the creepiest vocals set to record ever. Bob CarpenterSilent Passage ... LP
Warner, Mid 70s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
The rare solo album from Canadian singer-songwriter Bob Carpenter – a really lovely record that mixes Bob's gritty folk rock tunes with some sweeter studio touches! The album was recorded from the early to mid 70s, had a troubled release history and deserved better – but over the years it's really grown to legendary proportions, thanks to a huge amount of underground supporters around the world. Carpenter's music is an endearing mix of gruff lead vocals with honest emotion and no-nonsense acoustic guitars – and although some tunes have a slightly bigger sound, with keyboard, strings, and some slight backing vocals (including work from Emmylou Harris), the core energy of the record still comes strongly from Bob himself. Titles include "Miracle Man", "Silent Passage", "Old Friends", "First Sight", "Morning Train", "Gypsy Down", "Before My Time", and "Now And Then". (Folk/Country, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Early work from the Alice Cooper band – working in a hard grooving, late 60s psych and garage rock informed sound, a couple years before the Bob Ezrin-produced, shock rock juggernaut – but still a nicely sinister Detroit rock & roll sound! Alice's sneering, snakelike vocals are laying the bedrock for the nastiness to come – and this is the best, pre-superstar Alice Cooper album, and also a lot stronger than the cheesy, self referential late 70s stuff. Quite possibly our favorite Gang Of Four album – and the one in which their funk approach really seems to work! The album's got a camp appeal that can't be denied – known famously for it's big post-disco hit "I Love A Man In Uniform" – but overall the whole thing actually seems pretty well thought out – taking the heady politics of earlier records, and putting them into catchy guitar-driven dancefloor tracks that clearly get the message out to a whole new audience of converts! Grateful DeadSkeletons In The Closet – The Best Of The Grateful Dead ... LP
Warner, Late 60s/Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $16.99
The long strange trip the Grateful Dead began with Warner Bros in the late 60s culminated in this concise, pretty darn solid attempt at an early Best Of, appropriately called Skeletons In The Closet! The Dead would never be best known for their studio recordings, but this really is a good reminder that the band wrote and recorded a lot of wonderful songs in their heyday that feel uniquely, distinctively Dead even in the 3 to 6 minute studio versions. It's a worthy reminder of that for eternal fans, and an even better gateway to Dead fandom for newcomers. Includes "Truckin'", "Sugar Magnolia", "St. Stephen", "Uncle John's Band", "Casey Jones", "Mexicali Blues", "Turn On Your Love Light", "One More Saturday Night", "Friend Of The Devil" and more. Jane's AddictionNothing's Shocking ... CD
Warner, 1988. Used ... $1.99
There really wasn't anything exactly like Jane's Addiction on a major label in their late 80s, very early 90s prime – and this first of 2 classic Warner albums from that early peak stand the test of time. Nothing's Shocking, then and now, is a strange mix of psychedelia and hard rock, weird enough to earn fans from the artier indie and college radio underbelly, and reach more mainstream hard rock fan – which really paved the way for 90s rock in ways they might not get enough credit for these days. The sound doesn't really get old, either. Includes the classic "Jane Says", plus "Idiots Rule", "Mountain Song", "Summertime Rolls", "Ted Just Admit It", and "Had A Dad". CD

Jesus & Mary ChainBarbed Wire Kisses – B-Sides & More ... LP
Warner, Mid/Late 80s. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Prime period B-Sides, live recordings and other rarities from The Jesus & Mary Chain – great stuff from the first 5 or 6 years of their career – creatively up there with their best work ever! As dark-edged as the band is, they've often worn their influences on their sleeves over the years, be it the proto rock rawness of Bo Diddley, the catchy vocal style of early Beach Boys (though layered in razor wire) or the moody freneticism of Can – and they're all the more open with them on this collection, while still sounding like quintessential JMC. Classic! Includes "Kill Surf City", "Surfin' USA", "Upside Down", "Swing (Darklands Outtake)", "Just Out Of Reach", "Head", "Cracked", "Here It Comes Again", "Bo Diddley Is Jesus", "Rider", "Don't Ever Change", "Sidewalking", "Who Do You Love" and more. A classic bit of spare electronics from the Kraftwerk man machine! The album's perhaps a bit tighter than some of their earlier albums, but it's also got that spare tinny sound that influenced a generation of hip hoppers, electro heads, and Miami bass stars. ✨✧ Bill LaBountyBill LaBounty ... LP
Warner, 1982. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A great record from a singer who should have been huge – the overlooked Bill LaBounty, who really knocks it out of the park with this AOR gem from the early 80s! The album's nicely understated – well-produced, but with a lot of care – thanks to great work from Russ Titelman, who also joins an all-star group of musicians on the date – including Steve Gadd on drums, Greg Phillinganes on keyboards, and David Sanborn on alto. Most tunes have Bill playing Fender Rhodes – which glides along wonderfully with his delivery of the lyrics – and titles include "Slow Fade", "Dream On", "Didn't Want To Say Goodbye", "Nobody's Fool", "Secrets", "Look Who's Lonely Now", and "Comin Back". Little FeatWaiting For Columbus (Original Master Recording) ... LP
Mobile Fidelity/Warner, 1978. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99
The classic late 70s double live album from Little Feat! Their reputation as one of the great live acts of that decade or any other is realized beautifully here – the band playing off of each other masterfully, and they're just as sharp vocally – but what's most impressive is how they manage to expand upon the studio versions of the songs and jam a bit, too. A seriously impressive set – and truly one of the more essential live albums of the late 70s by anyone! Includes "Join The Band", "Fat Man In The Bathtub", "All That You Dream", "Day Or Night", "Spanish Moon", "Dixie Chicken", "A Apolitical Blues", "Sailin Shoes", "Feats Don't Fail Me Now" and more. 27 tracks in all. Van MorrisonAstral Weeks ... LP
Warner, 1968. Very Good+ ... $44.99
Van's debut album for Warner Brothers and a pretty radical departure from anything he'd done before – breaking all kinds of new ground for his own most creative work and helping pave the way for all kinds of hauntingly poetic rock, folk rock, and singer-songwriter records to come! It doesn't take more than a few seconds of opening title track, with Morrison's rawly passionate voice and spiritually yearning lyrics, to know this is a pretty remarkable creative leap from pop leaning sound of "Brown Eyed Girl" and other preceding efforts – , and it gets even more far out from there both lyrically and instrumentally! It's almost folk jazz, arrangements wise, with flute and largely acoustic instrumentation, a really spontaneous feel to the sessions, and always hypnotic, seemingly stream of consciousness vocals by Van. As loose and spacious as the sound is, the emotional resonance is pretty heavy, and sequenced as a cycle: part one In The Beginning on side 1 and part two Afterwards on side 2. A stunner! Titles include "Astral Weeks", "Beside You", "Cyprus Avenue", "Sweet Thing", "Slim Slow Slider", and "Madame George". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Maria MuldaurMaria Muldaur ... LP
Warner, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $4.99
A landmark record from Maria Muldaur – quite different than the rougher folsky work she cut in the 60s – and done with a really warm studio sound that's pure 70s all the way through! Maria's working here with some older folksy contemporaries – like David Grisman, Ry Cooder, and Jim Keltner – but much of the album has a warm glow overall, and some jazzy inflections that really help change the sound from before. The mighty Nick DeCaro did some great string arrangements on a few tracks – including the sublime "Midnight at the Oasis", one of the best pop tracks to come out of the seventies, and a jazzy ditty that still sounds amazingly fresh today. Other tracks include "Any Old Time", "Mad Mad Me", "Long Hard Time", and "Three Dollar Bill". (Soul, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album
