✨✧ TurtlesTurtle Soup ... LP
White Whale, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the crowning achievements of The Turtles – a set that features all original material by members of the group, and stellar production by Ray Davies of The Kinks! The set's the only full length that Davies ever handled – and it's obvious the group really rose to the occasion for the honor – hitting territory that's nicely sophisticated, yet which still has the sharpness of their earlier material too – a bit like the territory that Ray was hitting at the time with his own music. The songs are both a lot more personal, and have some deeper currents too – as The Turtles, like so many other west coast pop acts, were really maturing at the end of the 60s. Titles include "She Always Leaves Me Laughing", "Somewhere Friday Night", "Dance This Dance", "You Don't Have To Walk In The Rain", "Bachelor Mother", "Love In The City", and "House On The Hill". LP, Vinyl record album
("Target" label pressing in the textured cover. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a few tiny drip stains, but looks great overall.)

✨✧ Four TetEverything Ecstatic ... CD
Domino, 2005. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The feather light, atmospheric beats and aural scenery we've come to expect from Kieran Hebden splinter out hard and heavy in the frentic opener "A Joy" on Everything Ecstatic – fair warning that Kieran's Four Tet isn't going to fall into realm of expectation without a fight! Kieren has dabbled in ambient jazz, post rock and Jay Dee-influenced hip hop beat craft on previous albums and singles, and he's running the gamut pretty well on this effort – managing to catch us off guard just when we're ready to settle into a groove. Tracks include "A Joy", "Smile Around The Face", "Sun Drums And Soil", "Turtle Turtle Up", "High Fives", "Sleep, Eat Food, Have Visions", ". . .You Were There With Me" and more. (New Grooves, Rock) CD

✨✧ Jerry Garcia BandRagged But Right ... LP
Round, 1987. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $31.99 35.99
One of those great 80s albums that really helped Jerry Garcia demonstrate his commitment to deeper currents of American acoustic music – sounds that always colored his contributions to the Grateful Dead, but which by this point have emerged as a fantastic second side of Jerry's genius! And sure, the guy's a superstar, so most folks would lend their ears to anything he does – but the sounds here are really balanced so that Garcia is hardly the leading light of the set – trading guitar lines and vocals with David Nelson, in a group that also features John Kahn on bass, Kenny Kosek on fiddle, David Kemper on snare drum, and Sandy Rothman on mandolin, dobro, and banjo – all of which really add a lot to the set. Titles include "Bright Morning Stars", "Turtle Dove", "Rosa Lee McFall", "Deep Elem Blues", If I Lose", "Ragged But Right", and "I Ain't Never". LP, Vinyl record album

Kansas City JammersGot Good (If You Get It) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Lion, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $5.99 14.99
A wonderful little record that sounds nothing like Kansas City or something you might expect from a group with "jammers" in their name – as there's a sweet harmony style to the whole album that's a lot more like Cali work of the time! The trio harmonize together beautifully, and they mix acoustic and electric instrumentation in a nicely lean mode – yet with a quality that's still well-produced for such a small label indie release at the time! We might make an obvious comparison to CSNY, but the song themes are very different, as is the mood – and these guys are much more down to earth in a really great way! Titles include "For A Sign". "Live In Harmony", "Messiah", "For Father" "Chess Piece", "Hairy Tongued Turtle", "Midnight Watch", "Fall", "Fingers Foot & Fade", and "For Marti". 2CD edition features a full bonus disc – 14 more rare tracks from the time, a great expansion to the too-small legacy of the group! ✨✧ Big Brother & The Holding CompanyCheap Thrills ... LP
Columbia, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Cheap Thrills, maybe – but they cut deeply and last forever! This is one of greatest albums by Big Brother & The The Holding Company – and it's also one of the most important in cementing the legacy of singer Janis Joplin. The raw manic energy of the group at their live best is somehow bottled and presented on record as perfectly as ever could be – and even better are the delicate moments that show such an incredible depth! Titles include "Turtle Blues", "Oh Sweet Mary", "Ball & Chain", "Summertime", "Piece Of My Heart", and "I Need A Man To Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram mono reissue.)

✨✧ John FaheyAmerica ... LP
Takoma, 1971. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
John Fahey rewrites the sound of America – here in a wonderful set that stands as one of the real highlights from his Takoma Records years! Tracks are a mix of public domain material from America's past, mixed with plenty of Fahey originals – and all material receives both fantastic Fahey arrangements and performance – with a sublime tone that's filled with color, life, and lots of dark little corners as well. Echoes of older string and blues modes come into the mix – but with a very contemporary, modernist expression – as John reworks an older version of American to balance a country forever changed by the 60s. Titles include "The Voice Of The Turtle", "Knoxville Blues", and "Mark 1:15". (Folk/Country, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album
(Great gatefold pressing, with booklet inside! Label is black and gold, with Takoma logo.)

✨✧ TurtlesTurtles Present The Battle of The Bands ... LP
White Whale, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest concepts ever for a 60s rock record – and maybe one of the standout sets from The Turtles! The album is set up as a "Battle Of The Bands" – one that has the group pretending to be a different ensemble from track to track on the record, either Natures Children, Fats Mallard & The Bluegrass Fireball, The Bigg Brothers, The LA Bust '66, and many other fake combos – all in a way that offers up a brilliant commentary on rock music in the late 60s! The effortlessness with which the group approaches the songs is fantastic – each number could have been a hit for the individual groups, were they real. One of our favorite tracks is the incredible "I'm Chief Kamanawanalea", played by the Royal Macademia Nuts – which has an incredible funky breakbeat all the way through! Another nice one is the funky cut "Buzzsaw", which has a fuzzy guitar groove that sounds a lot like "Tramp" – and other titles include "Surfer Dan", "The Last Thing I Remember", "Elenore", "You Showed Me", "Food", and "Chicken Little Was Right". ✨✧ TurtlesYou Baby (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Sundazed, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
A seminal second set from The Turtles – and a record that really has them sharpening up their sound! The songwriting is smarter than before, and the group's also developing the wit that would really set them apart from the rest of the west coast scene of the 60s – that mode of stepping back, taking a grander look at the music, and coming forward with a great sense of perspective in their sound! There's still a few folksy currents from before – but there's also some deeper, darker modes too – maybe a touch of Brit influence, ala Animals or Kinks – yet slightly lighter west coast too. Titles include "Down In Suburbia", "House Of Pain", "Just A Room", "I Know That You'll Be There", "Flyin High", "Pall Bearing Ball Bearing World", and "Give Love A Trial". CD

VariousCome Together – Adventures On The Indie Dancefloor 1989 to 1992 (4CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 4CD ... $32.99 39.99
The end of the 80s saw a huge new shift in music on the UK scene – a moment when indie rock and club music collided – and guitar-based work was back on the dancefloors in a really big way! Part of the shift came from years of UK interest in house, electro, and other American styles – which were often spun alongside post-punk and indie material in the same clubs (maybe most famously at the Hacienda in Manchester) – leading to a surprising blend of styles that breathed a lot of new life into the world of rock music as well! This set captures cuts from the key years of this moment – the post-1988 summer of love period through years when dance might take over more completely – a much-loved moment, filled with well-remembered cuts – presented here in a big box set that features many rare mixes from 12" singles as well. The box brings together 57 tracks in all, all with detailed notes on the music – and includes work from Primal Scream, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, 808 State, Inspiral Carpets, Future Sound Of London, Electronic, Candy Flip, Telescopes, Hollow Men, Spacemen 3, Spin, World Of Twist, Mock Turtles, Northside, The Moonflowers, Charlatans, Shamen, Blow Up, Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine, The Dylans, Saint Etienne, and others! VariousI See You Live On Love Street – Music From Laurel Canyon 1967 to 1975 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 3CDs ... $28.99 34.99
A really great package, and one that shows all the cool criss-crossings of styles that we happening up in the hills of LA at the end of the 60s! The artists here are all part of the famous Laurel Canyon scene – a place where late folk, new psych, country rock, and other modes criss-crossed in loose social networks, music studios, and clubs – creating an array of sounds here that really might catch you by surprise! You'll know most of the artists within, but the presentation of them together makes for a very cool compilation – especially as the 3CD set begins with lesser-known early work, then tracks shifts in sounds and styles – moving into later years when the artists and sounds had shifted down into the Hollywood scene. At another level, the whole thing also just makes for a great evolution of Cali rock and pop over a few short years – presented with detailed notes on the artists, songs, and scene – with a set list of 72 tracks that includes work by The Turtles, Rick Nelson, Love, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Gentle Soul, Clear Light, Peanut Butter Conspiracy, Stephen Stills, JD Souther, Judee Sill, Crazy Horse, Nilsson, Ned Doheny, Leon Russell, Howdy Moon, Jo Mama, The Leaves, Byrds, MFQ, Steve Noonan, Barry McGuire, Holy Mackerel, Ruthann Friedman, Smokey Roberds, Susan Carter, Loggins & Messina, Gram Parsons, and many others!
