✨✧ Big Brother & The Holding CompanyBig Brother & The Holding Company (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Mainstream/Sony, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first full album featuring the incredible voice of Janis Joplin, as the singer of Big Brother & The Holding Company! Even at this early point, it's clear that there's some really incredible things happening with this band. Originally released on Mainstream, the production is a bit thin compared to the bigger sounding records to come, hich actually works incredibly well – as Janis's voice just tears right through in a really exciting way. The rawer Big Brother backdrop is great, too! Titles include "Easy Rider", "Bye, Bye Baby", "Intruder", "Women Is Losers", Moondog's "All Is Lonliness", and "Down On Me" – with bonus tracks "Coo Coo", ""The Last Time" and alternate takes of "Call On Me" and "Bye Bye Baby". CD
(1999 pressing – with 4 bonus tracks.)

✨✧ Jackie DeShannonLittle Bit Of Heaven – The Metric Music Demos ... CD
Teensville (Australia), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $13.99 16.99
A really cool set of work from the young Jackie DeShannon – records that were not issued to the public at the time, but which were instead used as a way to circulate her strengths as a songwriter! The material was originally captured as demo recordings by the Metric Music publishing company – and dovetails nicely with the Imperial records that Jackie would issue throughout the 60s – tunes that include some she's record later under her own name, or which would get picked up by other singers – as well as some more obscure material too. The set's got a 16 page booklet of notes on the contents – and includes 35 tracks in all, with titles that include "Hellos & Goodbyes", "Franklin Street", "Heart In Hand", "Just Like In The Movies", "So Deep", "Put On Your Kid Gloves", "I Must Be Dreamin", "He's So Heavenly", "Up On A Hill", "This Time It's Not Fun", "Little Ole You", "Takin The Long Way Home", My Heart Is Breaking All The While", and "You Don't Have To Prove A Thing To Me". ✨✧ VariousBob Stanley Presents London A to Z – 1962 to 1973 ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An imagined soundtrack to a journey through London in the generation of Get Carter and Carnaby Street – and one that showcases not just the rich array of sounds and styles that were taking place in the city at the time, and in a way that highlights all sorts of different locations around town! This isn't a package of well-worn British rock classics – and as with other Bob Stanley sets on Ace Records, the music comes from a deep dig and decades-long understanding of records in many modes – which makes for a track selection that's as sublime as it is surprising, and another revelatory collection from Mr Stanley! There's two dozen gems on the collection – some we've never heard, some we'd forgotten about – all of which sound great in the company of each other – with titles that include "Hampstead Way" by Linda Lewis, "Cutty Sark" by John Barry, "Sunny Goodge Street" by Marianne Faithfull, "Marcel's" by Herman's Hermits, "London Bridge" by Cilla Black, "Mayfair" by Nick Drake, "Vauxhall To Lambeth Bridge" by Brian Auger & Julie Driscoll, "City Road" by Dave Evans, "Beckton Dumps" by Humble Pie, "Notting Hill Gate" by Quintessence, "Friday Hill" by Bulldog Breed, "Goodbye Post Office Tower" by Cressida, "Kew Gardens" by Ralph McTell, and "Euston Station" by Barbara Ruskin. ✨✧ VariousHeroes & Villains – The Sound Of Los Angeles 1965 to 1968 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A deep dive into the sound of Los Angeles in the middle of the 60s – a really well-done box that somehow manages to mix together all the different strains of music that were going on in the city of angels at the time – sunshine pop, garage rock, psych, pop, and even more experimental modes – served up here in a set list that's full of some of the coolest, hippest groups of the time! The box takes its title from a Beach Boys tune, but this isn't a set of well-played oldies from AM radio – and instead, the selection demonstrates the continued appreciation of this period of music over the decades, and the shift in interest to some of the more groundbreaking, obscure groups of the period – served up here with bigger names as well – all with the detailed notes and overflowing amount of tracks that we love from these boxes on the Grapefruit label! There's a massive 90 tracks in all – with work from Mark Eric, Jim & The Lords, The Heroes, Candy Company, Odds & Ends, Spirit, The Misunderstood, Urban Renewal Project, Peanut Butter Conspiracy, Captain Beefheart, Ruthann Friedman, The Rogues, Music Machine, Whatt Four, Velvet Illusions, Merrell & The Xiles, Sanctions, Grass Roots, New Wave, West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Grains Of Sand, Merry Go Round, Human Expression, Love, Laughing Wind, Roger Nichols & The Small Circle Of Friends, Boystown, Gene Clark, and many others! VariousRing The Bells & Sing – The Progressive Sounds Of 1975 (4CD set) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), 1975. New Copy 4CDs ... $34.99 42.99
Mid 70s magic from the UK progressive rock scene – cuts from a moment when many of the groups were changing things up a bit – not in a commercial way, but in a mode that has them taking the energy of earlier jams and focusing them a bit more into tuneful music! The approach is a great one – and we really love these years when the prog acts were trying to stay vibrant and important, as older artists are joined by younger ones – and the music really takes off in all these new and unexpected directions! The package isn't overplayed classic rock – and instead, it serves up some great overlooked cuts from the year before punk – all with lavish notes that strongly support the excellent choices in the 47 tracks within – music by Van Der Graaf Generator, Caravan, Steve Hackett, Wigwam, Hatfield & The North, Soft Machine, Global Village Trucking Company, Clive John Greenslade, String Driven Thing, Man, Nektar, Fruup, Manfred Mann's Earthband, Chris Squire, PFM, Bebop Deluxe, Kestrel, Hawkwind, Gentle Giant, and others. Bear Family (Germany), Mid 1960s. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99
A searing set of surf tunes from the 60s – one that throws in plenty of surprises along the way, and which takes some nice steps to move far past the obvious hits and classics! Instead, the whole thing is a great deep dive into the genre – very much in the best Bear Family Records mode – with some cuts that we've never heard before, mixed with others that we'd never have expected to sound so good in this company – all packed into an overstuffed collection that even comes with detailed notes on all the music! The set's got 33 tracks in all – and titles include "Bullwinkle (part 2)" by The Centurions, "Midnight Run" by the Super Stocks, "Tragic Wind" by The Chantays, "Like Weird" by Tommy Falcone & The Centurions, "King's Surf" by Dave Myers & The Surftones, "Rumble Bee" by The New Dimensions, "Surfin Blues (part 2)" by Al Casey, "Go Go Dancer" by The Ventures, "Thunderbeat" by The Thundermen, "Redondo Beach" by The Super Stocks, and "Surf Beat" by Aki Aleong & The Nobles.
