A great little record – of the type you could hardly make this well today! The Tea Company are an obscure psychedelic act, clearly concerned with all things "tea" (wink wink!) – and working in a free and open style that's a bit trippier than that of the usual psyche-pop styled group. Songs are longish at times, and there's lots of really cool production touches that make the weird lyrics and fuzzy instrumentation sound even better! Titles include "Make Love Not War", "Flowers", "Love Could Make The World Go Round", "Come & Have Some Tea With Me", and a very strange take on "You Keep Me Hanging On". Also includes the song "Don't Make Waves", which is really just water (bong?) sounds – recorded with lots of strange effects! CD

Four incredible albums from Hammond legend Brian Auger – a key link between jazz and the headier sounds of the UK scene at the end of the 60s! First up is Open – one of the amazing early albums from the team of Julie Driscoll and Brian Auger – kind of a next-generation to the Brit beat group sound of the mid 60s – one that moves beyond simple R&B modes, to bring in more sophisticated soul and jazz touches! Driscoll's vocals are amazing – some of the boldest belted out in the British scene at the time – and Auger's Hammond work really cooks throughout – at a level that easily makes him one of the best UK organists to hit the scene, amidst some very heady company in the 60s. There's a few bluesy moments, but our favorites are the funky ones – especially the group's reading of "Season Of The Witch", which is tremendous. Other cuts include "In & Out", "Black Cat", "Goodbye Jungle Telegraph", and "Break It Up". Definitely What is a landmark batch of funky organ work that made big waves in both the rock and jazz worlds at the time! Auger's really stretching out here – getting past the simple R&B of his roots, and going into a bubbling funky style that's clearly touched by chromatic inspirations from Wes Montgomery and Jimmy Smith – both of whom are referenced by some of the song structures on the set. The album's filled with killer organ-based instrumentals – some lean and stripped down, others full and rich – and all of them coming across with a richly soulful sound that you'd hardly expect from a member of the British rock scene! Titles include "Day In The Life", "Red Beans", "Definitely What!", and his classic "Bumpin' On Sunset". Streetwise is filled great funky grooves by the legendary Trinity group – featuring excellent keyboard work by Brian Auger, recorded during the period when he was really beginning to stretch out a bit, and hit a much more open-ended kind of sound. Julie Driscoll is still on vocals, singing in her raw sound, but Brian's Trinity group gets a fair number of nice instrumental moments on the set – which are greatly appreciated! Titles include the classic and sample laden "Light My Fire", "Czechoslovakia", "Finally Found You Out", "In Search Of The Sun", "Ellis Island", "I've Got Life", and "Save The Country". Befour is the third album from Brian Auger & The Trinity – and the first to feature the group recording without vocals from Julie Driscoll! The sound here is just as soulful as before – a tight take on American soul jazz and funky soul of the 60s – pushed along by Auger's mighty work on the Hammond organ, and featuring (this time around) some male lead vocals, which seem to give the album an even deeper feel than earlier work! Auger's included some great covers of American tunes like "I Want To Take You Higher", "Listen Here", and "Maiden Voyage" – all redone with some great Brit beat group touches – and the album also features a great take on Faure's "Pavane", and Auger's own "Just You Just Me". An amazing legacy in music from Mike Cooper – a British musician who started out in the world of folk blues, but never ended up moving towards some of the rockish modes of his contemporaries – instead finding his very own sort of special space in the freedom allowed by the Dawn Records label! The set begins with the very spare Oh Really – a set that has Mike Cooper mostly on guitar and vocals, in a style that's part Piedmont, part Delta blues – but also given a more folksy spin, and graced with Cooper's unusual vocals – almost making the whole thing feel like a spare acoustic version of Canned Heat territory – with titles that include "Maggie Campbell", "Saturday Blues", "Electric Chair", "Crow Jane", and "You're Gonna Be Sorry". Do I Know you is a record that follows up with a sound that's maybe a bit fuller than Mike Cooper's debut, but still relatively spare – with Mike on acoustic guitar and slide guitar, Harry Miller on bass (really great bass, by the way!), and Poor Little Anne on a bit of vocals. Miller brings these deep tones to the record that really transform things – and titles include "Do I Know You", "Start Of A Journey", "First Song", "Theme In C", and "The Link". Trout Steel is a beautiful set from the British scene at the start of the 70s – a record that's got a fairly folksy tone, but lots of jazzy currents as well! The set was issued on the seminal Dawn Records label – and really shows that imprint's commitment to the left side of the spectrum – as Mike Cooper's vocals and acoustic guitar come into play with more guitar from Stefan Grossman – plus alto sax from Mike Osborne, tenor and soprano from Alan Skidmore, piano from John Taylor, and bass from the late Harry Miller – all key players on the UK avant jazz scene of the time! The mix of these players with Cooper's core inspiration is not unlike some of the most progressive material coming from Island Records – or, even better, the special jazzy moments on records by Tim Buckley or Tim Hardin – company that Cooper could very easily keep, given the strength of his songwriting. Titles include "Don't Talk Too Fast", "On My Way", "Hope You See", "Weeping Rose", "Trout Steel", "I've Got Mine", "That's How", and "Pharoah's March". Places I Know blends Cooper's acoustic guitar and rootsy vocals with some very compelling arrangements from Mike Gibbs – the British jazz talent who was already known for his larger ensemble creations at the time, but who works here in these really subtle ways – to inflect Cooper's core inspirations with just some slight instrumental colors, tones, and phrases on most numbers – while Cooper brings in the core Machine Gun Co group on a few more. The result is a record that's way more than familiar folk – and arguably a lot hipper than most of the British acid folk of the time, too – on titles that include "Night Journey", "Paper & Smoke", "Country Water", "Time To Time", "Goodbye Blues Goodbye", and "Places I Know". The Machine Gun Co album is a partner record to Places I Know – recorded in the same sessions, but with tracks that are longer, and even more openly expressive – all with backings from the sweet Machine Gun Co quartet, a group with some especially nice electric piano from Alan Cook! Heavy use of that instrument really works against some of the folksier elements in Cooper's music – with these blocks of warm sound and color that really illuminate the tunes, and almost unlock a new level in the vocals. Cooper plays a bit of electric guitar at times – and titles include "So Glad That I Found You", "Lady Anne", "Midnight Words", and "Song For Abigail". CD also features songs from singles – "Your Lovely Ways (parts 1 & 2)", "Time In Hand", and "Schaabisch Hall". CD

A great document of all this famous harmony trio/quartet were able to achieve during their first few years – a masterful reworking of vocal group modes from earlier rock and soul styles, taken forward towards the 70s with a spirit that's still as powerful today as it was back at the time! Electric Flag keep on playing – a statement that hardly needs to be made, when you've got a group lineup as strong as this! The album's a bit later in the combo's vintage, but actually seems to have the individual members finding more focus in the company of each other than they might have on their own – really focused, balanced sounds from Buddy Miles on drums, Nick Gravenites on guitar, and Roger Troy on bass – all of whom provide lead vocals at some point – alongside the sweet keyboards of Barry Goldberg and guitars of Mike Bloomfield! The quintet's a supergroup who clearly love working together – really coming up with something that sounds way more like a group effort instead of a bunch of egos in the studio – a great Cali sense of collaboration, on titles that include "Sweet Soul Music", "Make Your Move", "Lonely Song", "The Band Kept Playing", "Talkin Won't Get It", "Inside Information", and "Earthquake Country". Big Top Records may not be as well-remembered as other key indies from the early soul years, but back at the start of the 60s the company was really hitting on all burners – with a top-shelf blend of rock, soul, and R&B! This package takes a nice dip into the best Big Top singles from the label's run – a key batch of work that really helped define not only the Brill Building sound of the time, but also set the scene for the uptown soul style that would mark so many New York classics of the 60s. A really cool little set – one that's every bit as evocative as you might expect from the cover and the title, but which also has a lot more going on too! It's really hard to put our finger on what makes this music so great – there's definitely some acoustic elements in the music, and things are definitely trippy at times – but that's also just the tip of the iceberg, as so many of these tracks are really beyond simple categorization or familiar labels – and instead represent this really cool blending of different elements and genres that were taking place during a really mind-expanding moment of music – the sort that always seemed to have a lot more freedom on the British scene than we had here in the US! And although most of this work is British, it's also not familiar acid folk material from the time – as the scope of sounds is much wider, and given plenty of illumination in the detailed notes that come within – all in support of 54 unusual tracks from artists who include Mellow Candle, Chris Harwood, Sunforest, Wizz Jones, Jade Warrior, Bridget St John, Ray Fenwick, Hardin & York, Fat Mattress, Dando Shaft, Linda Hoyle, Nirvana, Writing On The Wall, Open Road, Paul Brett, Miller Anderson, Keith Christmas, Heron, Global Village Trucking Company, Zior, Linda Lewis, Jade, and many others! Most folks know the United Artists label for their famous soundtrack hits of the 60s – but back at the start, the company was very open to cutting work in all sorts of different formats – including the surprisingly great range of rockers and rockabilly numbers you'll find in this set! UA was a real powerhouse in the world of the 7" single at the end of the 50s – and as you'll hear here, they had a great ear for the kind of cuts that could burst out of a jukebox and present the listener with two minutes of upbeat, hard-stepping pleasure – maybe not the kind of cuts that gave the label that many hits, but which make a set like this a non-stop treasure trove of under-discovered goodies! Cameo and Parkway were home to plenty of pop hits at the start of the 60s – but they always put their money back into the scene, and were close to the ground digging up the best and brightest new Philly acts – something that maybe made them one of the first and most important to unleash the strong legacy of Philadelphia soul!
