Andrew Oldham OrchestraRolling Stones Songbook ... CD
Decca (UK), 1966. New Copy ... $8.99
Wonderful easy grooves – from an orchestra leader who couldn't read a note of music! During the 60s, Andrew Oldham was probably best known to the world as the flamboyant manager of the Rolling Stones – but during the same period, or at least the earliest stretch of it, he also headed up his own studio orchestra – working with pop arranger David Whittaker to craft some incredibly groovy albums! This one's the ensemble's fourth and final effort – a magical transformation of familiar Rolling Stones numbers into some sweet easy instrumentals – all asparkle with the best styles of mid 60s Brit easy, served up with orchestrations that run from baroque to breezy! Titles include "Blue Turns To Grey", "You Better Move On", "Heart Of Stone", "Time Is On My Side", "The Last Time", "Theme For A Rolling Stone", and "Tell Me". CD

One of the greatest albums ever from The Rolling Stones – a set that still draws on all the bluesy roots of their best 60s material, yet which also shows a sharper, nastier edge as well! The album shows the tremendous sense of focus and power the Stones had in this crucial late 60s stretch – a bold step forward that would give them some of their most memorable moments ever, launched by this sublime set of tracks that includes "Sympathy For The Devil", "Street Fighting Man", "Dear Doctor", "Parachute Woman", "Prodigal Son", "Factory Girl", and "Stray Cat Blues". Rolling Stones, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Rolling Stones at their rawest, most shambling, sleazy and brilliant – the epic, unimpeachable Exile On Main Street! What can we say about one of the most iconic LPs of all time other than chime in with our agreement that it's one of the greatest rock albums ever! Big choruses come and go, but the easy hooks of earlier and later Stones hits are buried in mud, grit and a sleazy bluesy groove. Titles include "Rocks Off", "Rip This Joint", "Tumbling Dice", "Sweet Virginia", "Loving Cub", "Torn And Frayed", "Let It Loose", "All Down The Line", "Shine A Light", "Soul Survivor" and more. London/Abkco (Japan), 1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark live set from the Rolling Stones – featuring material from their smoking tour of 1969! The set really captures the Stones at their most nasty – that great turning point when their edge was maybe sharpest of ever, right in the best Let It Bleed mode – but with even more raw energy from the live setting. Titles include "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Love In Vain", "Carol", "Live With Me", "Street Fighting Man", "Sympathy For The Devil", "Little Queenie", "Honky Tonk Women" and "Stray Cat Blues". CD

Rolling Stones, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A sometimes-overlooked classic from the Rolling Stones – but that's maybe just because it's sometimes obscured in the shadow of Exile On Main Street, the record that immediately preceded it! And while it might be a stretch to some, we like to think of Goat's head as kind of a capper to that double-length set – as the Stones are still working out a fair bit of similar ideas, with an opening ear to some global currents, and with great help from some of their key collaborators too. The set's worth it alone for the classic gut-wrencher "Angie" – and other tracks include "Star Star", "Hide Your Love", "Winter", "Can You Hear The Music", "100 Years Ago", and "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)". A legendary greatest hits collection from the Rolling Stones – one that was so popular back in the day, it was maybe the one Rolling Stones album that everyone had in their collection! The package was a great way for folks to go back and catch up after digging in deep on Exile On Main Street and Let It Bleed – and the set has work from the earliest years of The Stones all the way up to those classics – a killer set list that includes "Get Off Of My Cloud", "Gimme Shelter", "Brown Sugar", "Wild Horses", "Honky Tonk Women", "Sympathy For The Devil", "Satisfaction", "Ruby Tuesday", "Play With Fire", "Paint It Black", "Jumpin Jack Flash", "Street Fighting Man", "Midnight Rambler (live)", "You Can't Always Get What You Want", "Time Is On My Side", "Heart Of Stone", "19th Nervous Breakdown", "Let's Spend The Night Together", and "Mother's Little Helper". London, 1969. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Hard to go wrong with a Stones classic like this one – a record that really has the group hitting their late 60s stride, and coming across with a depth and power that really goes beyond their earlier releases! There's a sinister quality to the record right from the start – thanks to the brooding, haunting power of "Gimmie Shelter" – and the sublime "Monkey Man", which may well be one of our favorite Rolling Stones songs ever! But the whole thing's great – and other tracks include "Love In Vain", "Let It Bleed", "Live With Me", "Midnight Rambler", "Country Honk", and the classic "You Can't Always Get What You Want". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label stereo pressing, including the printed inner sleeve and poster! Cover has light surface wear and some splitting on the top seam. Vinyl has a short click on "Let It Bleed".)

A 70s album from The Stones, but one with a 60s-looking cover – and for good reason too, as the set features a whole host of unissued gems from their first decade in the studio! The package is a great reminder of how strong the group were at the start – so much so that the set ended up standing quite strongly next to other 70s giants from Mick and Keith. This package features the UK version of the record, which had even more tracks – and titles include "We're Wasting Time", "Sleepy City", "Out Of Time", "Don't Lie To Me", "I Don't Know Why", "Jiving Sister Fanny", "Downtown Suzie", "Family", "Memo From Turner", "I'm Going Down", "I'd Much Rather Be With The Boys", "Each & Every Day Of The Year", and "Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind". ✨✧ Rolling StonesMiss You/Far Away Eyes ... 12-inch
Rolling Stones, 1978. Very Good+ (pic cover)... Just Sold Out!
A club crossover classic from The Rolling Stones – a track that surprisingly got the group onto the dancefloor in the late 70s, but which still held onto most of their best elements! Although sometimes panned as a cheap disco cash-in effort by some, the tune is actually pretty darn great – a gritty little tune that relies on heavy vamping, rolled-out guitar parts, and one of the catchiest vocal hooks that Mick Jagger had sung in years. Harmonica completes the sound, and the whole thing's got a bluesy undercurrent that's totally great! (Soul, Rock) 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Rolling StonesSticky Fingers ... LP
Rolling Stones, 1971. Good ... Just Sold Out!
Landmark work from The Rolling Stones – and a set that may well stand alongside Exile On Main Street for capturing the group at their height! The record's got the Stones very much in their own space – years from just putting a UK spin on American blues – and instead, finding a way to take all their best influences, and fuse them into a nasty, gritty sound that's complete genius all the way through! Yet at the same time, the set also has them more comfortable with rootsy elements too – but returning to styles in ways that are very different than their youth – with a new sort of mature confidence that holds the album together wonderfully. Titles include "Brown Sugar", "Wild Horses", "You Gotta Move", "Can't You Hear Me Knocking", "Bitch", "Sister Morphine", "Dead Flowers", and "I Got The Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Rolling Stones/Universal, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 29.99
Killer deluxe edition – with bonus tracks that include a reading of "Brown Sugar" with Eric Clapton – plus "Wild Horses (acoustic)", "Bitch (extended)", "Dead Flowers (alternate)", and "Can't You Hear Me Knocing (alternate)" – and four tracks recorded live at the Roundhouse in 1971 – "Honky Tonk Women", "Stray Cat Blues", "Live With Me", and "Love In Vain". ✨✧ Rolling StonesTheir Satanic Majesties Request ... LP
London, 1967. Very Good Gatefold ... $29.99
A record that was initially thought by some as a cheap cash-in on the Sgt Peppers concept – but an album that, to us, really helped set The Rolling Stones free to express themselves in so many new and amazing ways! There's definitely a bit of the hippie vibe to the set at times – such as sitar that might have been unimaginable on a Stones track a few years before – but there's also an explosively creative approach to the album's arrangements and production, creating a kaleidoscope of sounds that only further seems to illuminate the Jagger and Richards genius! Titles include the classic "She's A Rainbow" – plus "Citadel", "2000 Man", "On With The Show", "Sing All This Together", "In Another Land", "The Lantern", and "Gomper". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing in the lenticular 3-D cover, including the printed inner sleeve. Cover has split seams held with tape, a name in pen, and light surface wear.)

Rolling Stones, 1983. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A bit of an odd album, but one that showed the Stones were alive and kicking in the 80s. Taking off from the Stones' take on disco from their previous couple of LPs but keeping a nice rough edge on the proceedings, Jagger and Richards turned in what's probably their last great studio LP. 10 tracks in all, including "Undercover Of The Night", "She Was Hot", "Tie You Up (The Pain Of Love)", "Wanna Hold You", "Feel On Baby", 'too Much Blood", "Pretty Beat Up", "All The Way Down" and "It Must Be Hell". ✨✧ Master Musicians Of JoujoukaBrian Jones Presents The Pipes Of Pan At JouJouka ... LP
Rolling Stones, Late 60s/1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Back before he was found floating face-down in a swimming pool, ex- (or late-) Stones member Brian Jones put together this landmark bit of trippiness for the Rolling Stones label. Although the music is largely ethnographic, the whole thing's got this neo-colonialist hipster edge to it – as Brion Gysin wrote the liner notes, Jones wrote an introduction (and included his picture), and the whole thing was made possible by the presence of British junkies in Morrocco. The music is very trippy and trance-like, with lots of pinched reed sounds and haunting throbbing pulsing. Wild stuff, and a cool cross-pollination of cultures. The dawn of the 90s debut of the Black Crowes! This is a record that really stood out at the time, a strange period in mainstream rock between the hard rock/hair metal of the late 80s and the moodier alternative rock to come – and here was the Crowes, carrying a torch for the old school swagger of the Rolling Stones and especially the Faces – and doing a pretty damn convincing job! Includes "Twice As Hard", "Jealous Again", "She Talks To Angels", "Struttin' Blues", "Stare It Cold", "Hard To Handle" and more. CD

✨✧ Ruth CopelandI Am What I Am (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Invictus/Demon (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A second sublime set from Ruth Copeland – a funky female singer from the Detroit scene of the early 70s, with key ties to the P-Funk universe, and a unique groove that mixes singer/songwriter modes with the fuzzier funkier elements of artists like Betty Davis or Yvonne Fair! There's a bit more emphasis on soul here than the funk of Copeland's previous efforts – but in a way that makes for an even more impressive record overall, especially when you realize that Ruth arranged and produced the whole thing. George Clinton and Eddie Hazel both had a hand in co-writing songs with Copeland – and instrumentation features Hazel on guitar, plus Bernie Worrell on piano – so there's still a key P-Funk link. Titles include the breakbeat track "Suburban Family Lament", the fuzzy stoner funk number "Don't You Wish You Had", and covers of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" and "Play With Fire" – plus "Crying Has Made Me Stronger", "Hare Krishna", and "The Medal". ✨✧ Marianne FaithfullCome & Stay With Me – The UK 45s 1964 to 1969 ... LP
Decca/Abkco, Late 60s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A wealth of wonderful work from Marianne Faithfull, all pulled from those key early years when she was part of the musical world of Andrew Loog Oldham and the Rolling Stones! Yet right from the start, despite the fact that she sang a few Stones songs on her own (and wrote a few for the group, too) – Marianne was always very much her own singer, and had a way with a song that was quite different than most of the other UK girl pop artists of the time too! Faithfull sometimes has a trill, and always has a sense of darkness on these singles – almost in the territory of the young Nico, but more tuneful and less moody – and superbly set up in just the right sort of arrangements by Mike Leander, David Whitaker, and even the great Jack Nitzsche. 2LP set features all the a and b-sides of these early singles – 22 tracks that include "Morning Sun", "Sister Morphine", "As Tears Go By", "Summer Nights", "The Sha La La Song", "Something Better", "I'd Like To Dial Your Number", "Counting", "That's Right Baby", "Tomorrow's Calling", "This Little Bird", "What Have I Done Wrong", and "Go Away From My World". ✨✧ Barbara KeithBarbara Keith (Warner) ... LP
Warner, 1972. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really wonderful album from the lovely Barbara Keith – a singer who's a bit folksy at points, but also has all the cool Cali touches you'd expect from the canyon scene at the time – that special blend of elements that can make an early 70s album like this such a unique treasure! Barbara sings lead vocals, and provides acoustic guitar – and backing shifts from track to track, and features great contributions from folks like Spooner Oldham on Fender Rhodes and Danny Kootchmar and Lowell George on guitars! With company like that, you'll get a good idea of the style – a mode that's faithful to roots, but really pushes things forward – and with an approach that's maybe more subtle than some of Barbara's male contemporaries, but in a nice way. Titles include "Detroit Or Buffalo", "Shining All Along", "The Road I Took To You", "The Bramble & The Rose", "Rolling Water", and "A Stones Throw Away". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Masked MaraudersMasked Marauders ... LP
Deity, 1969. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pretty great idea for a late 60s rock record – even if the record itself is even better than its idea! The whole concept of the "masked marauders" was that the group was supposedly formed by big rockers of the time – unable to be listed on the cover, because of contractual obligations. And in truth, the set does sound a lot like it could have been lifted from sessions by The Rolling Stones, or Get Back-era Beatles – plus maybe a few other contemporaries too – yet it's all actually the work of some great unknowns, who came up with a sweet gimmick to get the record out there! On its own, the set's a real charmer – and has a mix of rootsy modes and tighter, deeper ideas that's not unlike some of the George Harrison/Phil Spector work – save for those moments when the Marauders are clearly trying to sound a bit more like a big name act. Titles include "I Can't Get No Nookie", "Cow Pie", "Duke Of Earl", "I Am The Japanese Sandman", "Later", "More Or Less Hudson's Bay Again", and "Season Of The Witch". LP, Vinyl record album

Andrew Oldham OrchestraEast Meets West – The Famous Hits Of The Beach Boys/The Famous Hits Of the Four Seasons ... LP
Parrot, 1964. Near Mint- ... $28.99
American 60s hits, completely recast by the orchestra of Andrew Oldham – a cat you might know best as the manager of the Rolling Stones, but who also has a great way with a groove in the studio! The style is bouncy Brit pop of the 60s – which has these American songs really coming across in a cool and different sort of way – arranged to perfection by David Whittaker, who may well be the real leading talent of the set – able to beautifully balance electric basslines with larger orchestrations, and still keep things all tight and compact! There's some weird vocals buried in the mix, but most songs are instrumental – and titles include "Wendy", "Warmth Of The Sun", "Girls On The Beach", "Don't Worry Baby", "Big Man In Town", "Ronnie", "Save It For Me", and "Dawn Go Away". CD also features mono and stereo mixes of the whole album – and a version of the "Theme From The Dick Van Dyke Show". LP, Vinyl record album

Nikki SuddenBible Belt ... CD
Flicknife/Troubadour, 1983. New Copy ... On February 12, 2021
The first magnificent pairing of Nikki Sudden and Dave Kusworth – a set that's issued under Nikki's name, but which has all the magical energy of their Jacobites recordings together! There's an instantly timeless feel going on here – almost an indie punk refiguration of the best ideas of The Rolling Stones and other giants of the years before – but stripped down into a personal quality that's far more moving – and which almost makes you feel like you've stumbled upon some lost demo recordings from unknown friends of Mick and Keith. But that's only part of the picture, too – as the album's got a great sense of variety – including some female vocals at a few points – all to grace a great run of tracks that include "Six Hip Princes", "Gold Painted Nails", "Cathy", "Chelsea Embankment", "The Road Of Broken Dreams", "The Only Boy In Heaven", and "English Girls". Warner/Rhino Handmade, 1968. Used ... $24.99
A huge double-length live set of the groovy Tiny Tim at the height of his powers – and one that maybe offers up the fullest document of his surprisingly strong impact on the late 60s scene! The album's overflowing with tracks, all recorded by producer Richard Perry while Tim was strumming and singing at London's Royal Albert Hall – reworking old songs with a very strange vibe, leaving his imprint on some more contemporary numbers, and acting maybe more like an entertainer than you'd hear on record. Titles include "Save Your Sorrows For Tomorrow", "Welcome To My Dream", "Livin In The Sunlight Lovin In The Moonlight", "I Gave Her That", "Where Does Daddy Go When He Goes Out", "I Got You Babe", "Mr Tim Recalls His Visit With The Rolling Stones/I Can't Get No Satisfaction", "Nowhere Man", "I'll See You Again", and "The Other Side". Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD set ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A heavy little set that looks at the big rise of blues modes on the UK scene in the late 60s – but one that should be thought of more as the sound of rock in transition, rather than a lavish adherence to American blues modes! In fact, half of these groups are ones that you might not think of as blues-based at all – but who, like the Rolling Stones a few years before, drew heavy inspiration from the guitar giants in the US blues scene – yet quickly took their own music in very different directions, and even different than the Stones. There's a quality here that's almost more like a pre-progressive sound at times, but also an evolution from some of the R&B and soul that the mod scene were into too – and the whole thing captures a really exciting, really revolutionary time in British music – along with a big booklet of notes on all the many groups included. The set list is great – not big hits, but lots of overlooked gems – big groups mixed with smaller, forgotten acts – with 56 tracks by artists who include Icarus, Bloodwyn Pig, Killing Floor, Free, Zany Woodruff Operation, Ten Years After, Duster Bennett, The Deviants, Alexis Korner, Dr K's Blues Band, Mike Cooper, Sam Apple Pie, Black Cat Bones, Siren, Steamhammer, Liverpool Scene, Skid Row, Stack Waddy, Heavy Jelly, Jasper, Christine Perfect, Shakey Vick, Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Love Sculpture, and many others. Decca (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The British love of R&B in the 60s is no secret – thanks to the early work of The Rolling Stones, The Animals, and other chart-topping groups of the time. But here, that side of British music is explored in much greater depth – and served up in an assortment of lesser-known work from the time, with more than enough documentation to show that British R&B wasn't just a phenomenon confined to a handful of groups! The package is one of the best in the Decca "scene" series – and brings together 25 rare gems from the UK mid 60s years – most of which were never issued in the US, and all of which are offered up with great notes on the music, and vintage photos of the artists. Titles include "Keep Me Covered" by The Frays, "Louie Louie Go Home" by Davie Jones & The King Bees, "Anytime At All" by The Fairies, "You're On My Mind" by The Birds, "Cross My Heart" by The Exotics, "Blue Beat" by The Beazers, "King Lonely The Blue" by The Emeralds, "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" by Pauls Disciples, and "Can I Get A Witness" by Steve Aldo.
