Franck DervieuxDimension M ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
Franck Dervieux takes off to Dimension M in this very cool set of prog tracks from the Montreal scene of the 70s – music that's heavy on Franck's own work on piano, organ, and electric piano – driven onwards by a tight little combo, and topped with some occasional wordless vocals from Christiane Robichaud – a singer whose approach fits right in with the group like another instrument in the mix! The tunes are a mix of jazz and rock, very much in the spirit of some of the hipper French work of this nature from the time – and the approach is more freewheeling and fluid than some of Franck's other records from the period. Titles include "Present Du Futur", "Orejona Mater", "Dimension M", "Atlantide", and "Hyperboree Civilisation Un". LP, Vinyl record album

DionysosChange D'Adresse ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 1976. New Copy ... $16.99
A sharp slice of prog from the French Canadian scene of the 70s – served up by a group who realize that they actually do more with less by the time of this third album – a set that's filled with short tunes that have all these wonderfully focused, jazzy instrumental touches! The group has a warmth that goes beyond some of their contemporaries – and the tunes all have great vocals, sometimes harmonized by the group, and lots of excellent work on Hammond organ, Fender Rhodes, saxes, flute, and guitar – flowing out in ways that are never too extended, but certainly make their presence known. Titles include "Retro", "Pit Buick", "Un Bec Une Caresse", "Flou Pas Fou", "Yvette", "Ostid Probleme", and "C'Est Comme Ca". LP, Vinyl record album

DionysosLe Grande Jeu (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
The smoking debut album from Dionysos – a French Canadian combo from the start of the 70s who are partly hard rock, but also have a more freewheeling vibe – not entirely prog, although jamming at times, but maybe more of that special sort of sound that some of the French scene would pick up a few years later! There's plenty of fuzz on the guitars, and the French language vocals are soulful and heartfelt – and a heavy dose of Hammond organ holds the whole thing together nicely – on tracks that include "Suzie", "Narcotique", "Agneau De Dieau", "L'Age D'Or", "La Colere", and "L'Age Du Chlore". DionysosLe Prince Croule (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A gem of a record from the French Canadian scene of the 70s – a musical wonderland that's surprisingly under-tapped, even though most of its records came out in close proximity to us in the US! Dionysos blend hard rock roots with a vibe that's all their own – often touched with some nice elements that come from the French lyrics of the tunes, sung in a way that's expressive but without ever sounding fake or over the top. As with their debut, the guitar work is excellent – strong leads and solos, with plenty of fuzz – on titles that include "Demain La Vie", "Le Prince Jardine", "Ballade Inquiete", "Terreur Et Joie", "Chanson De Courage Tot", and "Lever Du Prince". OctobreOctobre (tan vinyl pressing) ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
An excellent prog set from the early 70s Quebec scene – work that really shows just how special that oft-overlooked world of music could be at the time! Octobre certainly have the instrumental chops to rival bigger prog groups, but they also come across with a quality that's more personal and pointed – as if they've also been influenced by some of the hipper French singer/songwriters of the late 60s, and are encouraged to put themselves forward as strongly from a lyrical mode as an instrumental one. Pierre Flynn handles the organ and electric piano – and also wrote all the songs – titles that include "Viens Vivre", "Dans Ma Ville", "Les Vivants", "Si On Partait", "Ca Prend Presque Rien", and "Au Fond Des Les Yeux". OffenbachEn Fusion 40th Anniversaire – Le Show Complet (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 1979. New Copy 2LP ... $25.99
A beautiful mix of Quebecois prog and fusion – performed here by the core group Offenbach, working with larger accompaniment from the Vic Vogel Big Band! The performance is a unique one, but also a summation of all the freewheeling ideas that were taking place in this overlooked scene – echoes of European music mixing with more homegrown execution – and coming off brilliantly throughout. This special 2LP edition features six tracks that were no on the original release, and a bonus instrumental cut too – with titles that include "A L'Envers", "Vagabond", "Sad Song", "Teddy", "High Down", "Promenade Sur Mars", and "Duke's Shuffle". SexEnd Of My Life ... LP
Trans Canada/Return To Analog (Canada), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
The second album from Canadian hard rock legends Sex – a power trio at the core, but expanded here with some great flute and sax, the latter of which is played in both acoustic and electric modes! The sound isn't quite prog, but the songs are longer than before, and the jazzy reed work really helps give the whole thing a really great flavor – especially when electric, which can come off like a harmonica jamming along with the guitar! The changes are mighty sharp – these guys have gotten even better since their landmark debut – and titles include "Born To Love", "Syphilissia", "The End Of My Life", "Pleasure", "Emotions", and "I'm Starting My Life Today". ✨✧ Les JaguarsLes Jaguars Vol 2 ... LP
Disques Merite/Return To Analog (Canada), Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A record with a sexy cover and a slinky sound to match – the rare second album from the cool French instrumental combo Les Jaguars – a 60s group who start in modes that resemble American surf guitar, but really take off into some great directions of their own! The style here is familiar – bass, two guitars, and drums – but the quality of the instrumentation gets nicely complex, and opens up way past catchy themes and references to sand and surf – as the group turn in mostly original tunes throughout, and have some especially great interplay between the two guitars – at a level that might normally be carried by an additional keyboard or tenor sax. The record's a hell of an instro rocker – way more so than you'd guess from the cheesecake cover – and titles include "Tourbillon", "Guitare Cha Cha", "Melle Yeye", "Guitare Strip", "Guitare Jet", "Dors Mon Amour", and "Jaguar Shake". ✨✧ VanilleSoleil 96 ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really great work from this French Canadian group – a contemporary set, but one that has lots of echoes of the past! There's a vibe here that has plenty of groovy 60s modes filtered through a 90s sensibility – somewhere in the territory of Stereolab, especially given the French lyrics – but with less electronics, and more catchy guitar overall! Production is nice and watery, too – maybe like Creation Records at its best – and vocals and main guitar are handled by the lovely Rachel Leblanc – on titles that include "Fleur", "Nouvelle Vague", "L'Ete Bleu", "Si Je Pleure", "Phoneme", "Les Jours Manques", and "Carte Du Ciel". ✨✧ Les SinnersSatan (2019 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Disques Merite/Return To Analog (Canada), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A rare bit of Canadian psych from the start of the 70s – served up by a group with a sound that's all their own! Some numbers here are straightforward hard rockers, but others have a more complex approach – not proggy, almost performative – like some of the trippier French material of the period, which almost had a communal creation sort of vibe. There's plenty of searing guitars and very offbeat French lyrics – and the record's got a very nice sense of variety from tune to tune. Titles include "Quebec Nous T'Aimons", "Groovy", "Petite Fille T'Es Down", "OK L'Chien", "Charogne", "Heavy", and "Aux Petits Oiseux" – which is a very cool psychedelic raga that rounds out the record! ✨✧ SexSex (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Trans Canada/Return To Analog (Canada), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The debut album from this heavy Canadian power trio – a group who definitely put themselves on the line with their name – and the weird cover image of them running topless through a field! Fortunately, the sound's a lot less dated than that might make you expect – really hard-wailing in an early hard rock mode – that style that was probably brewed up in blues rock a few years before, but really set free during the psychedelic era – which makes for lots of long guitar solos from Yves Rousseau, alongside the vocals and harmonica of Serge Gratton, and the monstrous drums of Robert Trepanier. If these guys were in the UK, they might have been huge – although they unfortunately titled one of the songs on the album "I Had To Rape Her" (were they nuts?) – and that might have kept this one out of the mainstream. Other cuts include "Come Wake Up", "Night Symphony", "Love Is A Game", "Scratch My Back", and "Not Yet". Note that this reissue truncates the title of the controversial song! LP, Vinyl record album
