Chuck BerryJohnny B Goode – His Complete 50s Chess Recordings (4CD set) ... CD
Chess/Hip-O Select, Mid/Late 50s. Used ... $64.99
Chuck Berry at Chess – as monumental as anything recorded by anyone in the 1950s with an importance that can't be overstated – but even if you put the historical relevance and cultural cache aside, you're still left with some of the most exhilarating blasts of high octane rock, blues & r&b ever! Hip-O Select doesn't shy away from exhaustive collections – and if this mammoth, beautifully packaged 4 CD treasure trove doesn't have every note Chuck cut for Checker/Chess, probably does have all you'll ever need – with all the great singles, multiple alternate takes, instrumentals, demos, masters, live versions and more. Comes in a beautiful, foldout, string-bound package with a nice booklet, photos and notes by biographer Fred Rothwell. A great set – with more than 100 tracks on 4CDs! Includes "Maybellene", "Wee Wee Hours", "Thirty Days (To Come Back Home)", "You Can't Catch Me", "Brown Eyed Handsome Man", "Oh Baby Doll", "Rock And Roll Music", "Sweet Little Sixteen", "Reelin' And Rockin'", "Johnny B Goode", "Around And Around", "It' Don't Take But A Few Minutes", "21 Blues", "Memphis Tennessee", "Little Queenie", "Almost Grown", "County Line", "Let It Rock", "Too Pooped To Pop", and much, much more! (Soul, Rock) CD
(Out of print. In great shape overall, but one of the tie "buttons" on front is missing. Everything else is great.)

✨✧ Georgie FameShorty ... CD
CBS/Rev-Ola (UK), 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
An excellent little album from British vocalist Georgie Fame – one that has him moving way past the simple beat group sound of his roots, into a sophisticated style that mixes jazz vocalizing, hard grooving, and lots of rock/R&B influences! Georgie's still got his Mose Allison-inspired vocal style, but the band behind him is a lot more open-ended, and grooves along freely in these great organ riffing rhythms – open-ended and very swinging on some numbers, but in a way that's different from Fame's rougher-edged roots. Titles include "Oliver's Gone", "Somebody Stole My Thunder", "Fully Booked", "Inside Story", "Seventh Son" and more. (Vocalists, Rock) CD

✨✧ Soft HeapAl Dente ... CD
Reel Recordings (Canada), 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great post-Soft Machine performance from the Soft Heap group – one that's filled with a lot more soul than you might expect! Although still with occasional proggish touches, the music here is wonderfully jazzy at most points – a sublime mix of electric piano from Alan Gowen, alto and saxello from Elton Dean, bass from Hugh Hopper, and drums from Pip Pyle – all playing in an easygoing, open sort of way. Tracks are longish, but never self-indulgent – and the electric piano and reeds are especially great, spinning out with an almost spiritual feel at times. Titles include "Fara", "Sleeping House", "CRRC", "Circle Line", "One For Lee", and "Remain So". (Jazz, Rock) CD
(Out of print.)
