Rex is the son of the legendary cowboy singer Rex Allen – and later on he carried the old man's wandering western troubadour torch – but this lost record is darker, stranger and groovier than we would have imagined! The weirdness is in the lyricism – Allen sings in a husky smooth baritone about youth rebellion, LSD, Vietnam, the face of mortality and topical concerns of the era – but he approaches it in the straightforward country music tradition. The production is by Steve Singleton, another legacy candidate – his pops helped resurrect Jerry Lee Lewis and handled other left of center, difficult to pigeonhole country classics with Tom T Hall and Charlie Rich. With Rex he provides unfussy, steel accented honky tonk arrangements with trippy washes of organ, harpsichord and mellotron. Almost certainly too tough a tab to dissolve in the culture of its time – way too weird for country, way too country for the weirdos – now's the time to savor this one! And yet the style also has more echoes of the territory that raised Jay up – and a knowledge of all the hippest sides of folk, rock, and country – delivered with a very personal stamp that makes Bolotin one of the true unique talents of his time. The album's a bit unusual for the label at the time – as it was recorded in Nashville, with production by Felton Jarvis – who brings out both the twang and fuzz in Burton's solo style – but maybe also gives the record some of the soulful currents you'd find in Memphis rock productions of the period. Maybe one of the few cases where a one-off record by an actor turned out to be a surprisingly classic set – maybe partly because Keith Carradine here seems to really evoke his singing character in the film Nashville, which is where the title track originated – but also because the mighty Dave Grusin is handling all the arrangements with an impeccable blend of jazzy warmth and AOR polish! Most songs are nicely understated – partly to fit Carradine's vocals – and that makes the acting side of Keith come to the forefront as he puts over the lyrics, with a fragility that's offset by the more confident Grusin charts. First up is Golden Hits – an early moment of Smash Records genius from Jerry Lee Lewis – a set that was one of his first for the label, after many years at Sun – and a record that definitely sought to leave the new imprint's stamp on the material! As the title implies, most of the tracks are older hits by Jerry – Sun Records material, but recast here with some of the 60s fullness that Smash did so well – although oddly not far from the roots of Sun, given that the whole thing was recorded at the Nashville studios of Sam Phillips, with Billy Sherrill at the engineering deck! Technical details aside, though – Jerry's already starting to show some of those country modes that would set fire to the second chapter of his career – on titles that include "Down The Line", "End Of The Road", "Break Up", "You Win Again", "Crazy Arms", "Fools Like Me", and "I'll Make It Up To You". Live At The Star Club was recorded in Hamburg, Germany – and is an incredible 60s performance from Jerry Lee Lewis – proof that the man was always on fire when he worked overseas, even if his star had dimmed a bit back home! Jerry gets sharp, tight backings from The Nashville Teens – but the Lewis is center stage throughout – really wailing on piano, and singing in this unbridled style that maybe even blows away his early singles – especially when combined with the sense of personality he brings out in a live setting. Titles include "Money", "What'd I Say", "I Got A Woman", "Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On", "Long Tall Sally", "Lewis Boogie", and "Matchbox". Greatest Live Show On Earth is a great early live album from the Smash Records years of Jerry Lee Lewis – and a set that really shows the new fire that was burning for the singer as he moved away from Sun Records! Smash always did a great job with live records – and this one's got a great approach that really captures the enthusiasm of the audience, the intensity of the performance, and all the charms of the man himself! Both Jerry's vocals and piano are very well-recorded – and titles include "Who Will The Next Fool Be", "No Particular Place To Go", "Together Again", "Long Tall Sally", "I Got A Woman", "Memphis", and "Jenny Jenny". On By Request, another live set from 1966 – Jerry's working with the super-tight Memphis Beats, who really manage to keep time with the boundless energy of their leader! Jerry's completely on fire – both vocally, and on the piano – which he completely decimates with fast-moving chords, and the kind of keyboard runs that must have been a piano tuner's nightmare! There's also just a hint of the country that would soon become a much bigger part of Jerry's career – mixed with really strong live versions of early rockin hits. That album is the first – The Wham Of That Memphis Man – a killer blend of southern soul and rockabilly grit from Lonnie Mack – his first album and a really incredible effort that fuses soul, country, and rock roots in a really brilliant way! Lonnie was later known as more of a country boy-electric bluesman, but the blues on this early LP feels like a blue-eyed Bobby Bland – but maybe with a lot more guitar in the lead! The horns burst, and the organ & bass really steep the overall vibe in the two Steps From The Blues style, but the fiery guitar and vocals keep more of a early rock vibe – twang next to soul, in a really unique mode. Tracks include "Wham!", "Down And Out", "Why", "Down In The Dumps", "Memphis", "I'll Keep You Happy", "Suzie Q", "Satisfied", and "Farther On Down The Road". Glad I'm In The Band is a slow-burning charmer from the great Lonnie Mack – a set that has him in a slightly different setting than his debut, but one that's equally soul-drenched overall! The group here features some especially great work from David Byrd – who plays these organ lines that almost set the whole thing in Muscle Shoals territory – as do the strong horn arrangements from Maxwell Davis, who sounds a lot more southern here than his Cali soul norm. Lonnie's also turned into an even better singer than before – blue-eyed deep soul at its best – on titles that include "Sweat & Tears", "Let Them Talk", "Why", "Old House", "Save Your Money", "Stay Away From My Baby", and "She Don't Come Here Any More". Whatever's Right is a comeback album of sorts for Lonnie Mack, recorded for Elektra with a really down-home sound that's almost verging on southern soul at points! In a way, the set's kind of a nod to the sorts of genres in rock that Mack's music first helped unlock in earlier years – done at a time when it was a bit more acceptable to cross boundaries and reference roots that weren't actually yours in your music! The execution here is surprisingly strong and without hoke – a few notches up from Leon Russell – and Mack's guitar is in fine fine form, supported by a good deal of organ in the backings. Titles include "Gotta Be An Answer", "Untouched By Human Love", "I Found A Love", "Baby What You Want Me To Do", "Mt Healthy Blues", "What Kind Of World Is This", and "Things Have Gone To Pieces". Hills Of Indiana is a real charmer – and the last Elektra album by Lonnie Mack! We don't normally think of Indiana in such poetic terms – but leave it to Lonnie Mack to find the hidden beauty in roughness – a quality that seems to emerge more and more in his music as the 70s moved on! This Elektra album from 1971 is a real overlooked gem – quite different than anything you might have expected from Mack at the start of his career, and a record that really shows him blossoming as much as a singer as he was a guitarist – heartfelt and personal, but still with all the grit that his reputation would entail – with strong currents of both southern soul and rock, but some nice roots elements too. The set was recorded in Nashville, Muscle Shoals, and LA – and titles include "Bicycle Annie", "Asphalt Outlaw Hero", "The Man In Me", "Rings", "She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye", and "Lay It Down". And the record was done in Massachusetts, away from some of the more cliched crossover sounds of Nashville – which helps preserve Taylor's intent nicely.
