VariousNew Guitars In Town – Power Pop 1978 to 1982 (3CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy 3CD ... $27.99 38.99
A set that might have you rethinking the early years of punk – as it shows that right next to the short sharp shocks of the new sound, there was also a rebirth of tight tuneful music too – a style that became known as power pop, even though many of the acts were ever bit as indie as the punk rockers! Don't mistake the "pop" for thinking that these are big commercial productions – as most of the work here is really back to basics rock and roll – a focus on sharp guitars, great rhythms, and excellent songwriting – served up in a wonderful mix of lesser-known artists, plus a few that went on to be timeless stars. The box set is every bit as great as other Cherry Red 3CD packages – detailed notes, 75 tracks in all, and work by artists who include Filmstars, Elvis Costello, The Questions, Rollers, Bram Tchaikovsky, The Deaf Aids, Undertones, Pinkees, Rudi, Gross Club, Stiff Little Fingers, The Monks, Backseat Romeos, The Flys, Pleasers, Leyton Buzzards, Purple Hearts, Elevators, Public Skool, The Cartoons, Excel, The Quads, Squeeze, Linda & The Dark, The Aces, and many others. ✨✧ VariousSongs In The Key Of Z – The Curious Universe Of Outsider Music ... CD
Gammon, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
Crazy stuff – and a very fitting compilation of tracks designed to accompany the excellent Songs In The Key of Z book by Irwin Chusid. Chusid's book looks at the history of "outsider music" in the US – the odd fringes of the underground, where conventional expectations about music are thrown away in the mad vision of adventurous artists with a mission to create and express as never before. There's a few familiar names on here, but there's a lot more wild stuff that we've never ever heard before – and although the styles are a real mixup, the tracks are all united by their uniqueness and by Chusid's thoughtful production of the package. Titles include "Walking On The Moon" by Lucia Pamela, "Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere" by Peter Grudzien, "Virgin Child Of The Universe" by Song-Poem, "In Canada" by BJ Snowden, "Cousin Mosquito #1" by Congresswoman Malinda Jackson Parker, "At The Grass Roots" by Sri Darwin Gross, and "They Told Me I Was A Fool" by Jandek. 20 tracks in all. ✨✧ ClusterGrosses Wasser ... LP
Sky (Germany), 1979. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful spare electronics, art rock, and even a little bit of avant funk from the Cluster team of Rodelius & Moebius! Grosses Wasser is an underrated effort from a combo that's been consistently underappreciated – one of the non-Eno collaborations, and showing that Cluster is a formidable artistic force with and without the aforementioned genius. Most tracks start out on the spare tip and slowly build in mood – utilizing electronics and ambient atmosphere. It has some dark touches, but is playful at times, too, and this is a vital piece of the Cluster puzzle. featuring the tracks "Avanti", "Prothese", "Isodea", "Manchmal", and "Grosses Wasser". Band XBest Of Band X (2024 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Riding Easy, Mid 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... On April 20, 2024
That's Band X, not Brand X – and they're a damn funky jazz combo from the 70s – one whose work is filled with plenty of sharp changes and wonderfully chromatic moments! Rhythms are at the core of the set – lots of choppy drum parts that are mighty nice, bumped along by sweet compressed basslines too – and other instrumentation includes lots of vibes, reeds, and a bit of keyboards from time to time – used in really creative ways! If we had to come up with a comparison, we might say these guys sound a bit like some of the best work by Steve Grossman and the PM Records crew in the 70s – but they've definitely got their own vibe too. Titles include "Home", "Black Hole", "Rip Van Winkle", "Red Cloud", "Trullion Alastor", "Afterthought", and "Picking Mushrooms With Rabbit". (Note: This item is not for sale online until 7:00am on Sunday, April 21. It is in limited supply – and by nature of the Record Store Day rules it will be offered for sale first to customers who visit the Dusty Groove retail outlet in Chicago the morning of Saturday, April 20. It will not be pre-sold or reserved in any way. However, after 7:00am on April 21 we will offer up whatever we have left for sale online.) (Jazz, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Mike CooperOh Really/Do I Know You/Trout Steel/Places I Know/Machine Gun Co (plus bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Dawn/BGO (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $18.99 24.99
An amazing legacy in music from Mike Cooper – a British musician who started out in the world of folk blues, but never ended up moving towards some of the rockish modes of his contemporaries – instead finding his very own sort of special space in the freedom allowed by the Dawn Records label! The set begins with the very spare Oh Really – a set that has Mike Cooper mostly on guitar and vocals, in a style that's part Piedmont, part Delta blues – but also given a more folksy spin, and graced with Cooper's unusual vocals – almost making the whole thing feel like a spare acoustic version of Canned Heat territory – with titles that include "Maggie Campbell", "Saturday Blues", "Electric Chair", "Crow Jane", and "You're Gonna Be Sorry". Do I Know you is a record that follows up with a sound that's maybe a bit fuller than Mike Cooper's debut, but still relatively spare – with Mike on acoustic guitar and slide guitar, Harry Miller on bass (really great bass, by the way!), and Poor Little Anne on a bit of vocals. Miller brings these deep tones to the record that really transform things – and titles include "Do I Know You", "Start Of A Journey", "First Song", "Theme In C", and "The Link". Trout Steel is a beautiful set from the British scene at the start of the 70s – a record that's got a fairly folksy tone, but lots of jazzy currents as well! The set was issued on the seminal Dawn Records label – and really shows that imprint's commitment to the left side of the spectrum – as Mike Cooper's vocals and acoustic guitar come into play with more guitar from Stefan Grossman – plus alto sax from Mike Osborne, tenor and soprano from Alan Skidmore, piano from John Taylor, and bass from the late Harry Miller – all key players on the UK avant jazz scene of the time! The mix of these players with Cooper's core inspiration is not unlike some of the most progressive material coming from Island Records – or, even better, the special jazzy moments on records by Tim Buckley or Tim Hardin – company that Cooper could very easily keep, given the strength of his songwriting. Titles include "Don't Talk Too Fast", "On My Way", "Hope You See", "Weeping Rose", "Trout Steel", "I've Got Mine", "That's How", and "Pharoah's March". Places I Know blends Cooper's acoustic guitar and rootsy vocals with some very compelling arrangements from Mike Gibbs – the British jazz talent who was already known for his larger ensemble creations at the time, but who works here in these really subtle ways – to inflect Cooper's core inspirations with just some slight instrumental colors, tones, and phrases on most numbers – while Cooper brings in the core Machine Gun Co group on a few more. The result is a record that's way more than familiar folk – and arguably a lot hipper than most of the British acid folk of the time, too – on titles that include "Night Journey", "Paper & Smoke", "Country Water", "Time To Time", "Goodbye Blues Goodbye", and "Places I Know". The Machine Gun Co album is a partner record to Places I Know – recorded in the same sessions, but with tracks that are longer, and even more openly expressive – all with backings from the sweet Machine Gun Co quartet, a group with some especially nice electric piano from Alan Cook! Heavy use of that instrument really works against some of the folksier elements in Cooper's music – with these blocks of warm sound and color that really illuminate the tunes, and almost unlock a new level in the vocals. Cooper plays a bit of electric guitar at times – and titles include "So Glad That I Found You", "Lady Anne", "Midnight Words", and "Song For Abigail". CD also features songs from singles – "Your Lovely Ways (parts 1 & 2)", "Time In Hand", and "Schaabisch Hall". CD

Cosmic JokersPlaneten Sit-In ... CD
Spalax (France), 1974. Used ... $28.99
A Krautrock classic from start to finish – and very much the sort of music from the early 70s German scene that had a huge impact on music well into the 21st Century! The songs here are maybe a bit shorter than on some of the contemporary albums from the scene, but no less experimental overall – mixing conventional instrumentation with wild production and effects – so that sounds from players like Harald Grosskopf on drums, Manuel Gottsching on guitars, and Klaus Schulze on keyboards all end up sounding much wilder than you might expect! Dieter Dierks serves a key role as the "magier em mischpult" – helping weave the amazing sounds throughout in his legendary studio – on titles that include "Elektronenzirkus", "Intergalactic Radio Guri Broadcasting", "Der Planet Des Sternemadchens", "Planet of Communication", "Der Narr Im All", and "Intergalactic Nightclub". A legendary album from the Krautrock scene of the 70s – one that was put together by Walter Wegmuller – more of an artist than a key musician on the scene, yet one who was wise enough to open the door to a huge amount of collaborative talents from the generation! The album's really more of an all-star Krautrock effort overall – as it features contributions from Klaus Schulze, Manuel Gottsching, Harald Grosskopf, Dieter Dierks, and others from important German acts of the period – and the music is very much in a cosmic jamming mode, with some occasional vocals or spoken bits – stretched out over the double length space of the set! Tracks are all named after individual tarot cards – and include "Der Wagen", "Die Kraft, "Der Tod", "Der Magier", "Die Sterne", "Der Mond", "Die Sonne", and "Die Welt". LP, Vinyl record album

The early works of this legendary German post-punk quintet – an all-female group who started out in punk, but soon hit much more interesting territory – as you'll hear on these early singles recorded both for the Zick Zack and 4AD labels! Later Xmal work was maybe a bit more goth, but these tracks have a stark and experimental approach that's right up there with the best of the German new wave of the time – sounds that both echo some of the UK experiments in the post-punk years, and also refine some of the earlier excesses of Krautrock and take them to nicely focused territory. VariousFantastic Voyage – New Sounds For The European Canon 1977 to 1981 ... LP
Ace (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 34.99
The new sound of the European scene at the end of the 70s – music that carries plenty of inspiration from post-punk modes, but which also carries forth some key elements of prog as well – all at a level that's quite a surprise if you only know more iconic material of the time! The artists here aren't all British or European, but the sound within definitely showcases the way that later electronic experiments of the 70s were thinning down in the work of underground UK and German labels – and also showing the way that the instrumental excesses of the earlier part of the decade were being packed down into more economical packages, but all without losing any sense of freshness or experimentation! The set takes its title from a song on the last Bowie Berlin album – a great reference for the music – and titles include "Tight As A Drum" by Thomas Leer, "Silent Command" by Cabaret Voltaire, "Theme For Great Cities" by Simple Minds, "White Car In Germany" by The Associates, "Nite Flights" by The Walker Brothers, "3,000,000 Synths" by Chaz Jankel, "Nightcrawler" by Patrick Cowley, "Riot In Lagos" by Ryuichi Sakamoto, "Silicon Chip" by Basil Kirchin, "Ode To Perfume" by Holger Czukay, "Do Weit So Gut" by Harald Grosskopft, "The Farther Away I Am" by Daryl Hall (with Robert Fripp), and "Patriarcat" by Areski & Brigitte Fontaine. The seminal debut of The Cosmic Jokers – a Krautrock supergroup who really offer up a genre-setting standard with the work on the set! Each track takes up a full side of the record – spun out by the spacious electric talents of Manuel Gottsching, Dieter Dierks, Klaus Schulze, Harald Grosskopf, and Jurgen Dollase – often with a sound that's much leaner than you might expect, which is what makes the record so amazing! These guys are almost an antidote to the heavy jamming of the prog scene – as instead of sounding like a quintet really blowing the roof off the studio, they work this kind of alchemy with their instruments, slowly shifting sound and style in ways that are still as mindblowing now as they were back in 1973. The set features two long tracks – "Galactic Joke" and "Cosmic Joy". CD

Now Again, Early 70s. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Raw, rumbling outsider psych from Stephen David Heitkotter – a wild and raucous stream of rambling genius from the early 70s! There's a loose, bluesy approach at the core – with long songs and a disquieting, yet engrossing mood that makes the set one of the most compelling lost rock records of the early 70s. This amazing set of Cali bedroom psych (literally – it was recorded in a bedroom) has built up a deservedly lofty legacy in collectors circles, but it's also something of a mystery – which is what makes this Now Again issue such a treasure. The whole package has been very well researched, and long unanswered questions about Heitkotter and the recording(s) are answered at long last – in a solid booklet of of notes by Eothen Alapatt with rare photos, and an even rawer batch of bonus material. Titles include "Hangin All Night", "I Don't Mind", "Quaker Dog Got Away", "Cadillac Woman" and "Fly Over The Moon" – plus 6 more untitled tracks/demos. Amazing! LP, Vinyl record album

Wonderfully sensitive sounds from this really unique group – an instrumental combo, but one who don't really play jazz – and who also avoid some of the more jamming indulgences of some of their prog contemporaries too! Part of the special blend in their sound is the way they can work with higher ideas, but not huge egos – really bringing their concepts down to a more personal level, with instrumentation that includes flutes, saxes, and pianos from Alain Bergeron – plus guitar and piano from Jerome Langlois, piano and percussion from Vincent Langlois, bass from Yves Leonard, and drums and percussion from Gilles Schetagne. The group also add in a few extra elements at times – vibes, trumpet, and even a bit of strings – and the set features the long suites "Les Aventures De Saxinette Et Clarophone" and "Les Porches De Notre Dame" – and the shorter "La Grosse Torche" and "Chromo". A second entry in this very cool series, but one that's very different than the first – as the "driving" in the title means that most of these tracks have a very cool groove – kind of the darker side of new club music styles of the time, with maybe just a hint of the cold wave generation to come! Given how far back this material goes, the set shows just how much German experiments influenced the rise of UK electronic work in the post-punk generation of early Human League and Cabaret Voltaire – as there's a link here with some of the darker sounds on Rough Trade during that period, and much of the material serves as a great bridge between Krautrock of earlier days and the German new wave of the 80s.
