ChasePure Music/Chase ... CD
Epic/Vocalion (UK), 1971/1974. New Copy ... $18.99
A pair of albums from Chase – one of the hippest jazz rock combos of the 70s! The self-titled Chase album first burned onto the market in 1971 – and it's a great distillation of a groove that was bubbling around in various other segments at the time – some of the tighter big band rhythms of the late 60s, as you might find in the work of Maynard Ferguson or Woody Herman – mixed with the hipper rhythms from the rockish underground, particularly in the work of Blood Sweat & Tears or Chicago. Chase is a fair bit jazzier than both of those groups – as they often put the horns more upfront than the vocals – although most numbers do have some sort of vocals as well. Instrumentation is heavy on trumpets – which come together in blasting, blaring groove, even despite the smaller size of the combo – and Phil Porter lays down some great keyboard lines that really help some of the best tracks cook nicely. Titles include "Handbags & Gladrags", "Livin In Heat", "Open Up Wide", "Hello Groceries", "Boys & Girls Together", and "Invitation To A River". Ennea is a jazz rock classic that still sounds pretty darn tasty today – forged on the heels of Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears, but with a sound that's leaner and meaner! The group's led by trumpeter Bill Chase – hence their name – and features lead vocals by GG Shinn and Terry Richards, both in a style that's got the same blue-eyed jazz soul overtones as that used by the groups mentioned above. The real strength of the tracks, though, is their jazzy backings – horn-heavy, as you'd expect, and hitting some great riffs and licks on the album's side-long title "suite", which features many instrumental passages. Titles include "Hades", "Aphrodite (parts 1 & 2)", "Zeus", "Poseidon", "Cronus", "It Won't Be Long", "I Can Feel It", and "Night". CD
(Hybrid Super Audio CD pressing – also works on standard CD players!)

ClashClash ... LP
Epic, 1977. Very Good- ... $49.99
One of the most stunning debut albums of the 70s – and a set that burst on the scene with a sound that summed up a generation, but which had never been heard this clearly before! This self-titled Clash album was different from other landmarks of the time – work by the Sex Pistols, Ramones, and others – as the group had a sense of raw power, but also a tunefulness too – a way of pushing their message into territory that others wouldn't have reached – with tunes that were as surprisingly hummable as they were politically correct! There's a bit less Jamaican influence here than in later Clash years, but that quality is still present somewhat – and over the years, this is definitely a set we can return to again and again – with no sense of apology or outdated ideals at all. Nearly every cut's a classic – and titles include "Janie Jones", "Career Opportunities", "Police & Thieves", "Garageland", "Clash City Rockers", "I Fought The Law", "White Riot", "London's Burning", "White Man In Hammersmith Palais", and "I'm So Bored With The USA". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original UK pressing with arrow labels, etched matrix ending in A-5/B-5. Cover has some wear and aging, with an unglued top seam and import sticker.)

ClashLondon Calling ... LP
Epic, 1979. Very Good+ 2LP ... $59.99
Quite possibly the crowning masterpiece by The Clash – and a record that certainly pushed them out of the punk rock ghetto and into the collections of countless mainstream folks over the years! This is the set that really pushed the group over the top – the one that harnessed all the best energy of the previous two records and gave it a strong new focus – one that draws on roots as deep as the late 50s Elvis reference of the cover art, but which also bubbled over with newly approaching 80s musical ideas and politics! Yet the message never gets in the way of the guitar-heavy tuneful appeal of the songs – ringing out for decades on classics like "Train In Vain", "London Calling", "Spanish Bombs", "Lost In The Supermarket", "Guns Of Brixton", "Clampdown", and "Rudy Can't Fail". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing with Sterling stamp and run-out message, still in the shrink with hype sticker, including the printed inner sleeves.)

ClashSandinista! ... CD
Epic, 1980. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
The longest album ever from The Clash – a stunning triple LP set that really shows the group bristling with new ideas and energy throughout! There's a hell of a lot going on here – some cuts that are every bit as strong as the previous records, others that offer a few mis-steps but in a wonderfully playful way – and a few more that really hit this sort of unique mix of genres and politics that could only be summed up as Clash-like at its best! Bits of hip hop, reggae, new wave, funk, and more mix together beautifully – and the album's got a hell of a lot of charm and character, even if you're skipping past a few of the cuts you don't like as much as the others. 36 tracks in all – and titles include "The Magnificent Seven", "Hitsville UK", "Junco Partner", "The Leader", "Police On My Back", "Midnight Log", "The Call Up", "Washington Bullets", "Broadway", "Rebel Waltz", "Look Here", "The Crooked Beat", "Somebody Got Murdered", "Lose This Skin", "Charlie Don't Surf", "Kingston Advice", "Corner Soul", "Let's Go Crazy", "The Sound Of Sinners", "Living In Fame", "Silicone On Sapphire", and "Career Opportunities". DonovanDonovan In Concert ... LP
Epic, 1967. Very Good ... $0.99
A wonderful complement to the Donovan studio albums from the late 60s – a well-recorded live date from the US. The style of the tunes is a bit different than some of their more famous album and single versions – with a relaxed approach to the work that leans a bit more on some of Donovan's folksy roots, but still features the jazzier touches that happened after his mid 60s "transformation" – thanks to plenty of great sax and flute from the legendary Harold McNair, who's a key part of the small combo on the set! Includes "Widow With Shawl", "Preachin Love", "The Fat Angel", "Celeste", "Poor Cow", "There Is A Mountain", "Isle Of Islay", "Young Girl Blues", and "Writer In The Sun". LP, Vinyl record album

One of Donovan's greatest albums! This LP is a perfect blend of pop psychedelia – complicated little songs that sum more in a short space than some of Donovan's contemporaries could do in a single album side. Nearly every cut on here is a tiny little 3 minute gem – and tunes include "There Was A Time", "Sun", "The Land Of Doesn't Have To Be", "Wear Your Love Like Heaven", "Little Boy In Corduroy", and "Mad John's Escape". Georgie FameShorty ... LP
Epic, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
An excellent little album from British vocalist Georgie Fame – one that has him moving way past the simple beat group sound of his roots, into a sophisticated style that mixes jazz vocalizing, hard grooving, and lots of rock/R&B influences! Georgie's still got his Mose Allison-inspired vocal style, but the band behind him is a lot more open-ended, and grooves along freely in these great organ riffing rhythms – open-ended and very swinging on some numbers, but in a way that's different from Fame's rougher-edged roots. Titles include "Oliver's Gone", "Somebody Stole My Thunder", "Fully Booked", "Inside Story", and "Seventh Son". (Vocalists, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Epic, 1967. Very Good+ ... $19.99
Wonderful work from The Hollies – from a time when the group was moving way past simple Brit Invasion pop – as you 'can probably guess from the cover and title! The Hollies hit a really special sort of sound here – slightly trippy, but still razor-sharp – making great use of the voice of Graham Nash, and also getting some perfect assistance on arrangements from Mike Vickers – who knows how to be ambitious with arrangements, but still keep things very focused! The tunes are overflowing with new ideas, but are still super-catchy too – and titles include "Water On The Brain", "Then The Heartaches Begin", "Rain On The Window", "Games We Play", "Lullaby To Tim", and "When Your Light Turned On". LP, Vinyl record album

Mike OldfieldTubular Bells ... LP
Virgin/Epic, 1973. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Easily one of the most successful albums of the British jazz rock years – but still a longtime favorite of ours as well! Mike Oldfield sets a whole new standard here for concept rock – not only by working on a single album-length composition that spans all of sides one and two, but also by playing all instruments himself – in a one man symphony of sound that's pretty darn great! The main theme of the piece will be recognizable from it's stripped-down use in The Exorcist – but we really love Oldfield's expansion on it here in a range of different overdubbed instruments, which are also sometimes processed – and then introduced by Mike in a spoken part that's one of the highlights of the album. Anthemic early 90s rock from Pearl Jam – one of the biggest debuts of all time and for good reason! Epic, 1970. Very Good Gatefold ... $6.99
The crowning achievement of Spirit – and a record that you probably could have found in any college dorm room in the early 70s! The record's really a cut above for their generation – an expansive effort that hangs together with a bit of a concept, and which interweaves strands of rock, folk, and a bit of jazz – yet also a record that has a lot more polish than other efforts of its type, and which trades a bit of psychedelic indulgence for a tighter focus that really lets the best tunes sparkle wonderfully! Production is great – clear, but trippy at the same time – and Randy California's guitar work has never sounded better. A very early album by this seminal songwriter from the late 60s! The record's the first we can find by Jimmy, and it's got him singing in a kind of pop vocalist style, with arrangements by Hank Levine, and backing on some tracks by a small vocal group. The record lacks the off-beat hipness of his Reprise albums – which may well be a plus – and it includes lots of original compositions, like "I Need You", "I Keep It Hid", "I'm In Need", and "Our Time Is Running Out". Donovan at his jazzy best – really picking up where Mellow Yellow left off, and pushing the jazz influences in his sound to deeper lengths! Mr Leitch is a million miles away from his Dylanesque early roots on the set – and is working in territory that's completely his own – a beautiful blend of folk, psychedelic, and jazz-based modes – handled with simple charm throughout, and performed by a group that includes funky sound library genius Alan Hawkshaw on piano, and the great Harold McNair on flute! The title track "Barabajagal" is one of Donovan's most amazing tunes of all time – a funky little number that dances around with some great heavy drums, and which also features guitar by a young Jeff Beck! Other titles include "The Love Song", "Trudi", "Atlantis", "Superlungs My Supergirl", "I Love My Shirt", and "Pamela Jo". LP, Vinyl record album

Epic, 1968. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Easily one of the headiest Donovan albums of the 60s – a record that moves past the simple psychedelic pop of earlier hits, and into a range of mind-expanding themes and styles! There's a cerebral quality here that seems to take hold even on the simpler, catchier tunes – a deeply introspective approach that has Donovan working in a world that's really all his own – less concerned with hit singles, and more focused on a personal journey in music, one that ties together many strands of music borrowed from Celtic, West Indian, jazz, and folk sources. Arrangers are John Cameron and John Paul Jones – and titles include "Get Thy Bearings", "Peregrine", "The Entertaining Of A Shy Girl", "West Indian Lady", "Jennifer Juniper", "Tangier", "The River Song", "The Sun Is A Very Magic Fellow", and "Hi It's Been A Long Time". Big, heavy late 60s British rock from Gun – with the raw, lumbering and bluesy (or better, bloozy) power trio core that's fleshed out in the studio with horns and other more sweeping touches! It's wild stuff, a genuine precursor to heavy metal in the searing guitars, thundering drums and bass, and wild eyed vocals – we have to wonder of the label thought it was too menacing and brought in the strings and horns to make it more approachable – but it actually just makes it weirder, which we love! Epic/Esoteric (UK), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Cosmic fusion from David Sancious – one of his headphone-popping albums for Columbia from the 70s! The record has a really outerspace kind of approach – long tracks that build and layer sound, mostly electric instrumentation, with lots of keyboards, guitars, and percussion. He's again working as a trio with longtime friends and collaborators Gerald Carboy on bass and Ernest Carter on drums and percussion – now working together under the banner of Tone. The songs on Transformation are longer on Transformation, and they're working with more diverse style, adding some bluesy jamming and spacier prog sounds to their hard-hitting fusion sound. Gayle Moran sings lead vocals on the cut "Transformation (The Speed Of Love)", and other tracks include "Sky Church Hymn #9", "Piktor's Metamorphosis" and "Play & Display Of The Heart". A full set of early work from REO Speedwagon – a group that some folks might dismiss for their crossover pop of the 80s, but who actually started out as a pretty great band! These guys cut their teeth playing hard in the bars of southern Illinois – and by the time they made their first few albums for Epic, they were a super tight, super sharp group with some really mighty chops – the kind of combo that maybe never got their due for awhile, but who were definitely on top of their game! The set also features the introduction of Kevin Cronin as their lead singer – a voice that's wonderful here in the early days, and not nearly as cliched as later on – and the box features the full albums REO Speedwagon, REO Two, Ridin The Storm Out, Lost In A Dream, This Time We Mean It, REO, and the double live album You Get What You Play For. The Band's epic double live album from '72, when they were at their peak – arguably a more exciting listening experience than even their best studio albums, which they always (wisely) considered a different universe then the live stage. Ever ambitious, The Band commissioned Allen Toussaint, one of their heroes to compose some horn arrangements, which indeed sound great – and the band is in such great form here – they're an unbelievably tight unit, but it never sounds slick or manicured. A pretty amazing effort from country rock progenitor Gene Clark! This one blends breezy songcraft that's not too far off from his previous couple of great solo albums – rustic harmonies and memorable lyricism flavored by acoustic guitars – with far more deft studio touches such as synths and densely layered backing vocals. There really was no other album in '74 like No Other, and initially it had the poor reception to show for it! It has a somewhat laidback and laconic vibe overall – infused with that Cali country rock groove that Gene helped invent – yet the production is richly produced on an epic scale, an effort that seems to seek flat out perfection. A couple years later, Califoria fellow travelers would utilize a similar approach and sell LPs by the ton. Here's hoping those groups bought Gene a dinner or two to thank him for the inspiration! Fantasy/Craft, 1959. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 49.99
Maybe one of the coolest albums of poetry ever recorded – a set that features a young, pre-hippie Allen Ginsberg – delivering his epic poem Howel, plus some other key works too. The young Ginsberg's voice is great – and really fills the works with a lot of bitterness and cynicism – with maybe more of a beat-era presentation than you'd know from his other later records, especially the music ones. This is one of the few albums that San Francisco-based Fantasy records cut of famous beat poets reading their own work – and it's probably one of the most enduring! Ginsberg reads "Howl", "Footnote To Howl", "Sunflower Sutra", "Supermarket In California", and other poems from the late 50s – and there's no musical accompaniment at all. Mindblowing music from Hapshash & The Coloured Coat – a group with a sound that's every bit as freewheeling as their name! The set's a unique collaboration between DJ/producer Guy Stevens and psych poster designers Michael English and Nigel Weymouth – and has this loose, unfettered feel that's almost more like a "happening" in the studio instead of some road-jamming band cutting its music to vinyl – a really hair-down party with instrumentation on trippy percussion, jangly guitar, and other odd sounds that step in and out of the mix – showing a larger studio sense of manipulation for the whole record. There's an odd groove to the record at parts – almost a chaos theory return of the eternal – and titles include "H-O-P-P Why?", "A Mind Blown Is A Mind Shown", "The New Messiah Coming 1985", "Aoum", and the epic side two jam "Empires Of The Sun". ✨✧ Indian SummerGiving Birth To Thunder ... LP
Numero, Early 90s. New Copy ... $20.99 24.98
A quintessential snapshot of the rawer roots of the 90s emo scene! Oakland's Indian Summer only lasted about a year, and recorded a bunch of songs issued as 7 inches or on compilations, but never issued a proper LP in their short time as an active band. Most of their songs have fragile melodic buildups to cathartic roaring end – and a raw sound that really does feel a lot more earnestly real than the more polished followers who made it to the major labels and mainstream alternative rock radio later in the decade. Numero does the 90s underground rock scene a solid here! Includes "Angel", "MM", the relatively epic "Woolworm", "Reflections On Milkweed", "Sugar Pill", "I Think Your Train Is Leaving", "Touch The Wing Of An Angel Doesn't Mean You Can Fly", "Truman" and "Orchard". It's not only his third album, it's his third 2 part, single piece epic in a row that's woven from acoustic, electric, classic and modern instrumentation – with a choir and and folk instrumentation keeping in something of an earthy realm, even with synthezisers and more otherworldly touches. Charlie RichToo Many Teardrops – The Complete Groove & RCA Recordings ... CD
RCA/Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 22.99
A great look at a really lost legacy in music from Charlie Rich – obscure sides recorded for RCA Records in the early 60s – done after his initial rush of genius on Sun Records, and before his later commercial success on Epic! Charlie's got one of the all-time great voices in pop music – a richness that easily rivals that of Memphis contemporary Elvis Presley, and which never fully got its due at the time – even though labels like RCA and Smash provided Rich with some fantastic material and production! Charlie's work for Smash has been picked up by the cognoscenti in recent years, and we'd honestly put these RCA tracks right up alongside them – with a similar Tennessee blend of soul and rock, rural and urban – all delivered by Charlie's incredibly charming vocal approach, and recorded with a depth that goes way beyond the usual RCA production modes of the time. There's plenty of currents of soul in the mix – even some New York-styled modes, which really work well with Rich – and this 40 track set is the first time this material has ever been pulled together – long-overdue, and a real treat to our ears! Titles include "Like Someone In Love", "Lady Love", "Nice & Easy", "Big Boss Man", "It's All Over Now", "The Grass Is Always Greener", "Now Everybody Knows", "My Mountain Dew", "The Big Build Up", "She Called Me Baby", "Gentleman Jim", "Christmas Greetings", "All Of My Friends Are Gonna Be Strangers", "Is Goodbye That Easy To Say", "Tragedy", "Ten Dollars & A Clean White Shirt", "Tomorrow Night", and "No Room To Dance".
