AcanthusLe Frisson Des Vampires (transparent blood red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $26.99
One of the most obscure entries in the short-lived genre of prog-based horror soundtracks – and one of the best as well – music by the French group Acanthus, served up here for a creepy film by director Jean Rollin! In a way, the use of electric guitar with vampires is maybe even spookier than strings or organ – as the instrument brings on this sense of hedonistic freedom that really matches the tension of desire in the narrative – handled here in ways that are sometimes psychedelic, sometimes more spacious – on tunes that are mostly short, but which clearly have that prog possibility of springing into longform action! The music also has some eerie reed work and bits of organ – plus other odd sounds too – on titles that include "Funerailles Des Vampires", "Le Frisson Des Vampires", "La Chateau", "Wedding Party", "Occupied Clock", "Who Are You", "Blood-Cups", "Isabelles Demise", "Night Excursion", "Isa's Ceremony", "Flightless Bird", "The Shiver Of The Vampires", and "Envol Vers La Folie". (Soundtracks, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

BandBand (Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab) ... CD
Capitol/Mobile Fidelity, 1969. Used Gatefold ... $28.99
Maybe not the first album from the legendary Band – but a record in which the group get everything completely right all the way through – and sparkle with that special sound that continues to influence generations of music makers, and music lovers! All the great elements the group were bringing to their work with Bob Dylan are in place here – but the focus is completely different, with this warm glow that really fits the vocals of Levon Helm, and a sense of unified vision that makes it really hard to even come up with a match for the energy of the group on this album. The great John Simon adds a few special touches to the overall sound – and titles include "Rockin Chair", "Across The Great Divide", "When You Awake", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Look Out Cleveland", and "King Harvest". CD

Matt BerryPhantom Birds ... CD
Acid Jazz (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Completely wonderful work from Matt Berry – an actor that most folks know for his hilarious performances in a number of TV shows – but also a surprisingly strong singer/songwriter, with a down to earth and honest vibe that's completely different than his role on screen! In fact, forget all about Matt Berry on screen – even though we love his work there so much – because this Matt Berry is a completely different individual, one who paints these songs that are often surprisingly dark, but never dreary – and surprisingly honest, both in the lyricism and the execution – which often has Berry singing with a style that's far less ironic than his delivery of his lines. Matt handles most instrumentation – piano, organ, mellotron from his collection of vintage keyboards – plus guitars and harmonica – next to a bit of pedal steel and drums from BJ Cole and Craig Blundell, respectively. Titles include "Man Of Doom", "Something In My Eye", "Intermission", "Hail To The King", "Covered In Clowns", "You Danced All Night", and "Phantom Birds". CD

✨✧ Black SabbathParanoid ... CD
Warner, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Quite possibly the greatest moment of genius ever from Black Sabbath – and a genre-changing record that influenced generations! The group are at their lean, raw best here – free from any cliches at all, and working in an incredibly heady brew of fuzzy guitar, romping bass, and dark drums – all topped by the instantly recognizable screech of the young Ozzy Osborne! Guitarist Tony Iommi virtually redefines rock use of the guitar with this record alone – and the Oz follows suit with some of the creepiest vocals set to record ever. Titles include the classics "Paranoid" and "Iron Man", plus "War Pigs", "Planet Caravan", "Electric Funeral", "Hand Of Doom", and "Rat Salad". CD

✨✧ David BowieAladdin Sane (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Parlophone, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $21.99 23.98
One of our favorite David Bowie albums ever! Aladdin Sane was a real turning point for Bowie – recorded on the heels of the tremendously popular Ziggy Stardust album, but really pushing the boundaries past the more straight-ahead rock and glam of that record. Instead of just sitting on his laurels, Bowie tripped out into a wilder, weirder world with this one – mixing together elements of some of the baroque arrangements of early records, with the meaner leaner sound of the 70s – populating the songs with freaks, weirdos, and odd characters that gave the whole thing a really creepy edge. The whole thing's an oft-overlooked gem that, to us, is truly one of Bowie's most magical moments – and titles include "Drive In Saturday", "Panic In Detroit", "Aladdin Sane", "Watch That Man", "The Jean Genie", "The Prettiest Star", "Time", and "Lady Grinning Soul". Tim BuckleyLook At The Fool ... LP
DiscReet, 1973. Near Mint- ... $11.99
The last album that Tim Buckley ever gave the world – and a great leaping-off point for speculation about what he might have done, had he not left the planet too soon! Tim's actually beginning to explore a bit of funk in his music here – still using that amazing voice with all of its range from the early Elektra years – but often set to backings that feature heavy drums from Earl Palmer, tight bass from Chuck Rainey, and keyboards from Mike Melvoin – all cats who can be tight, but never slick – and whose groove is more than loose enough to let Buckley direct the whole proceedings. Given that Tim has an occasional raw rasp, and a very offbeat way with his lyrics, the mix of elements is actually not that far from the funk of Betty Davis on her first two albums – with a similar shrug towards any easy genre categorizations. Titles include "Freeway Blues", "Look At The Fool", "Tijuana Moon", "Mexicali Voodoo", "Down In The Street", "Wanda Lou", and "Bring It On Up". LP, Vinyl record album

Take a trip through hell with the CA Quintet – an obscure late 60s combo from the Twin Cities – and one who've got more than enough psychedelic power to live up to the Cali promise of their name! The album's got a pretty amazing cover – nude models dancing in a satanic landscape – and the sounds within are even more incredible – way more eerie and offbeat than other records of this nature, with a true undercurrent of evil that really comes through in both the darkness of the instrumentation, and the creepy way the vocals are put across. Titles include "Trip Thru Hell" – in two parts – plus "Sleepy Hollow Lane", "Smooth As Silk", "Cold Spider", and "Colorado Mourning". LP, Vinyl record album

A great little soundtrack from trash maestro Nicholas Carras – not one of the bigger names in mainstream cinema scoring at the start of the 60s – but in a way that really lets him take off and get creative with a record like this! The album's got a leadoff rock tune, some jazzier charts – ala Elmer Bernstein – and a mix of dramatic orchestrations with moodier, mellower passages – almost currents of exotica at times, all put together to create more than enough drama away from the images on the screen! Titles include "Teen Bleus", "Vegas Express", "Jazz Chase", "Fight", "7D", "Lover's Reunion", "High Spot", "Bluesy Mysterio", and "Gang Stalks Rick". (Soundtracks, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jess ConradJess For You – The Definitive Collection ... CD
El (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Jess Conrad looks a bit more straight-laced than the usual British rocker of the 60s – and he sounds a bit more here, too – in a set of completely charming tracks that had their birth at the moment when the UK labels weren't above bringing a huge production force to bear on the talents of a singer! Conrad was often as much a screen actor as he was a singer – and in a way, he's maybe a bit like a British version of Tommy Sands – charming at the start, and able to bring a subtle sense of drama to his vocals – one that's never too overdone, but which paces things nicely here – and which creates some surprisingly nice moments in the music, maybe more than you'd expect from his clean teen look. This set features a huge 63 tracks in all – singles issued well into the 70s, along with some unissued tracks too – titles that include "There's Gonne Be A Day", "See The Tinker Ride", "Pussy Cat", "Tempted", "A Little Bit Of Loveliness", "My Idea", "A Conspiracy Of Cards", "Twist My Wrist", "Pretty Jenny", "Unless You Mean It", "Mystery Girl", "Out Of Luck", "There's Gonna Be A Day", "Every Breath I Take", "You Too", "Swimming In Tears", "Lock Up Your Daughters", and "Down Town Tonight". ✨✧ Creedence Clearwater RevivalBayou Country (remastered) ... CD
Fantasy, 1969. Used ... $5.99
Creedence Clearwater Revival may not have actually been born on the bayou – they were long-timers in the San Francisco scene of the 60s – but they do a hell of a job of reinventing swamp rock on this second stunning album! The quartet are a masterpiece of spare, unbridled power – the tremendous guitar and vocals of John Fogerty, strong rhythm guitar support of brother Tom, driving drums of Doug Clifford, and rolling bass of Stu Cook – all forged into a sound that's maybe more perfectly a summation of the blend of blues, funk, rock, and soul than some of the groups of the south were turning out at the time. Tracks include the huge hits "Born On The Bayou" and "Proud Mary" – sitting nicely alongside even more compelling numbers like "Bootleg", "Graveyard Train", "Penthouse Pauper", and "Keep On Chooglin". The complete Woodstock performance by Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1969 – brought together here as an official album for the first time ever! CCR were a very important part of that legendary rock festival, but didn't get placement on the original record in a way that lived up to their presence at the concert – a fact that's nicely corrected here, with a double-length album that brings together every song they played that night in 1969! The set features a very long jamming take on "Suzie Q" – plus "Green River", "Born On The Bayou", "Proud Mary", "Bad Moon Rising", "I Put A Spell On You", "Night Time Is The Right Time", "Keep On Chooglin", "Commotion", and "Bootleg". It's hard to get any more classic than this for Creedence Clearwater Revival – as this legendary late 60s album is definitely the place where it all comes together! The pairing of John Fogerty's lead guitar and the scratching rhythm guitar of brother Tom really sounds wonderful here – driven on by tight bass and drums, but always with this rootsy edge that stretches from the Bay Area scene way down to the bayou! Creepy John Thomas/RustTrippin Like A Dog & Rockin Like A Bitch – The Complete Recordings (Come With Me/Creepy John Thomas/Brother Bat Bone) (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), 1969/1971. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
Three full albums from Australian singer Creepy John Thomas – all of them pretty darn great! The set begins with a record issued under the name of Rust – a set recorded in Germany, by Australian singer John Thomas – all quickly put together in the studio, but with results that are surprisingly great! The group have a psychedelic look on the cover, but are more old school rockers with some late 60s twists – some Beatles-esque arrangements on a few tracks, freakier vocals on a few others, and this stunning ability to move between styles while still making the record feel very unified overall. The whole thing's wonderful – filled with catchy tunes and madder moments – titles that include "Delusion", "Come With Me", "Find A Hideaway", "The Endless Struggle", "Please Return", and "Should I". Next is the self-titled Creepy John Thomas album – a stunning set from Aussie singer John Thomas – billed here as Creepy John Thomas, a name that was supposed to invoke older blues roots while also pitching the whole thing to the weirder, wilder, wiggier generation at the end of the 60s! In truth, there's very little blues rock here at the forefront – maybe in part because the album's an early production effort by Conny Plank – who does a great job bringing out all these odd sounds from familiar elements – so that the fuzzy guitar and heavy bass can get weird and moody at times, even when the song structure might be relatively tight. The driving force, though, is Creepy John – the kind of singer who should have been part of some supergroup at the start of the 70s – but who's maybe even better as one of rock's great under-discovered lesser-rans. Titles include "Sun & Woman", "Bring Back The Love", "Ride A Rainbow", "You've Got To Hide", "Gut Runs Great Stone", "Do I Figure In Your Life", "Moon & Eyes Song", and "Trippin Like A Dog & Rockin Like A Bitch". Last up is Brother Bat Bone – a real gem from the overlooked Creepy John Thomas – a record that evokes familiar blues rock styles, but with a much trippier sound overall – as you might guess from the image on the cover! Creepy John plays acoustic and electric guitar – with qualities that are even stronger than his previous records, and which lead to the longs being longer, with some surprisingly great solo parts – which are then topped by those raw, nasty vocals that always made Thomas such a budding talent at the time! There's a complexity here that's really surprisingly – the guitar work alone is wonderful, and all the rest is really just icing on the cake – on titles that include "This Is My Body", "Standin In The Sunshine", "100lb Noomy", "What's The Matter With The Mill", and "Down In The Bottom". ✨✧ Brian EnoDiscreet Music ... CD
Virgin/EMI (UK), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! CD

Light In The Attic, 1981. New Copy 2LP ... On January 8, 2021 (delayed)
Roky Erickson's fantastic early 80s material with The Aliens – tracks that were produced by Creedence Clearwater Revival's Stu Cook – with some of the most straight-forward and accessible rockers in Roky's canon, but still sporting his trademark eccentricity! Given his mythical personal history, you can easy describe Roky Erickson as "having demons" – but as you'll hear, he's also got two-headed dogs, vampires, zombies, fire demons, ghosts and Lucifer himself – just on this one record! The tracks have an odd release history – having been recorded in the late 70s, but not released until 1980 in the UK on the Five Symbols record, and in '81 as The Evil One LP, with an altered tracklist. This definitive Light In The Attic version gathers up all 15 amazing tracks from the Stu Cook sessions from '77-'79. Includes the legendary "Two Headed Dog" and many more tunes that are just as incredible! We love Kim Fowley, and can never get enough of his genius – and no matter what the setting, Fowley always seems to move around the maddest corners of rock and pop music! This raw batch of gems is all pulled from the Fowley vaults – and features a host of indie singles recorded in LA between his bigger bursts of fame – some with Kim in the lead, lots more with lesser-known talents all given Fowley's forceful treatment in the studio – a push forward that makes just about every track here sparkle like some long-lost garage rocker or weird novelty number. Norton provides very detailed notes that are as much a musical journey as the cuts themselves – and titles include "The Knight In Shining Armor" by Knights Of The Round Table, "Kalani Honey" by John Paul Jones, "Young & Wild" by Renegade Five, "Big Bad Wolf" by Kim Garry & The Rhythm Kings, "Watch Your Step" by Larry Green & The Rhythmaires, "Goin Away Baby" and "Golden Apples Of The Sun" by Grains Of Sand, "Wanted Dead Or Alive" by The Rogues, "Moses" by Navarros, and "The Trip", "Astrology", and a rare radio spot all by Kim Fowley. A great batch of tripped-out tracks recorded for a very wild film of the late 60s – psychedelic tunes that are a perfect accompaniment to the erotic dream and fantasy images on the screen! Freedom's a lesser-known combo with a sound that's sometimes mod, and sometimes rootsy – a blend of Hammond organ, guitar, bass, and drums – served up with lead vocals from Steve Shirley on most tracks, but also coming across with a few sweet instrumentals as well! The album's a lot more rockish than most other soundtracks of the time – especially on the Italian scene – and in a way, the record could stand on its own nicely, even without a film to accompany it. The reissue is beautifully done – heavy vinyl, heavy gatefold cover, and a great inner sleeve – a real treasure through and through! Fantastic sounds from Charlotte Gainsbourg – a singer we first fell in love with through her father, the famous Serge – but who we've really come to love tremendously over the years – both through her work on screen and in the studio! Charlotte's got this sense of presence that's unlike anyone else at all – on film she's a complete individual, and on record she's very much the same – even while also echoing everything that made both Serge and Jane Birkin so great back in the day! This set has Charlotte working with collaborator Sebastian on most tracks – often in a musical mode that has spare rhythms, bass, and keyboards in the background – almost befitting the slight 80s look of the cover, but never in any sort of easy retro mode at all. The approach is a personal reinvention of an earlier generation of French sounds – and titles include "Lying With You", "Kate", "Deadly Valentine", "Rest", "I'm A Lie", "Dans Vos Airs", and "Les Crocodiles" – as well as the song "Songbird In A Cage", which features guest work from Paul McCartney – and "Sylvia Says", which features lyrics by Sylvia Plath. RCA/Real Gone, 1970. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A wild little record from the Groovie Goolies – a monster rock band that was an offshoot of the Archies TV show – and who work here in a mode that's got the same sort of sing-song pop style we love from that group! Sure, these guys aren't The Cramps or The Misfits – heck, their costumes are more goofy than creepy – but they do a great job of singing these catchy TV versions of late 60s Sunshine Pop songs – softer than The Monkees, but maybe harder than The Partridge Family – all penned by the team of Sherry Gayden and Linda Martin, and put together with occasional novelty rock elements along the way. Titles include "The First Annual Semi Formal Combination Celebration", "Goolie Garden", "Cling Clang", "Save Your Good Lovin For Me", "Bumble Goolie", and "Frankie". CD

Debbie HarryKookoo ... LP
Chrysalis, 1981. Sealed ... $9.99
A nice change in sound for Debbie Harry – thanks to Chic production from Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards – who really help the solo singer find a groove that's quite different than her work in Blondie! The style's a mixture of the funky club that Chic did so well, with elements that lean a bit more towards an early 80s rockish dancefloor – almost with a vibe that echoes some of the UK imports trickling over to these shores at the time, but with a definite New York vibe underneath! The setting gives Harry's vocals a great way to hit a more playful nature – that sound that was creeping in a bit in Blondie, but which some folks thought was wrong for the group – and Chris Stein is still on hand to bring in some street-sensitive riffing guitar. Titles include "Backfired", "Military Rap", "Oasis", "Surrender", "Chrome", "Jump Jump", and "The Jam Was Moving". LP, Vinyl record album

Deram, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A monster of a jazz rock set from drummer Keef Hartley – a player who initially came to fame for his funky grooves in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers! Hartley's sound here is a great mix of rootsy rock and some of the jazzier touches that were creeping into the London scene at the time – with plenty of tightly snapping rhythms at the bottom of the tunes, enough to create a nice funky rock undercurrent on most numbers. The set's made even better by some great keyboard work from Mick Weaver – and the best cuts have some really jamming elements that let Weaver open up on organ and electric piano. Titles include "Roundabout", "Overdog", "Imitations From Home", "We Are All The Same", "Enroute", and "Plain Talkin". LP, Vinyl record album

Warner/Wounded Bird, 1978. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
Pretty great later work from Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks – not the immediately-retro style of their earlier albums, but instead this wonderful blend of so many different jazz and acoustic elements – set forward with a style that's wonderfully groovy overall! There's a hip, scatting vibe to the music that almost puts Hicks in the same 70s territory as Ben Sidran – although maybe a few notches earlier in terms of his inspirations – yet coming across with a breezy warmth that's really beautiful, almost like the shift that Maria Muldaur had made from her trad styles of the 60s to the groove of "Midnight At The Oasis". Fender Rhodes warms the record up at all the right moments – and titles include "Boogaloo Jones", "Cruzin", "Garden In The Rain", "Dizzy Dogs", "Vinnie's Lookin Good", "Lovers For Life", and "Collared Blues". Great CD issue features the full material originally recorded for release as a soundtrack – the tracks on the album, plus 9 more unreleased bonus tracks – including "Gone With The Wind", "Hummin To Myself", "Lulu's Back In Town", "You Belong To Me", and "Walkin My Baby Back Home". Some of the most hard-hitting work ever recorded by Humble Pie – and that's saying a lot, given the power of the group on other albums! The performance is very unbridled – really open-ended, at a level that showcases not just the mindbending early guitar talents of Peter Frampton (something you'd never guess if you only knew his hits), but also the raw power that Steve Marriott could unleash in the group – quite a change from his work with the Small Faces. The tunes include a number of non-Humble Pie tracks, given a raw bluesy workout on extended versions – and titles include "Four Day Creep", "Stone Cold Fever", "I'm Ready", "Rollin Stone", and "I Walk On Gilded Splinters". Jackpot, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... About January 17, 2021 (delayed)
A fantastic 60s happening committed to record – one of the famous "acid tests" by Ken Kesey – recorded over the span of 14 hours, and condensed to the space of a single album – featuring early work by The Grateful Dead, plus tape loops, harmonica solos, and lots of weird wordplay too! This is the kind of thing that had us scared to death of west coast hippies when we were kids – and for good reason, too – as the album really shows the depths of the mind when exposed like this – and almost has us thinking that despite any outdated aesthetics of the period, there's kind of a creepy power of magick lurking far below. ✨✧ KinksArthur – Or The Fall & Decline Of The British Empire (50th anniversary 2CD set) ... CD
Reprise/BMG, 1969. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A true masterpiece of late 60s pop – music originally recorded for a TV special in 1969 – and one of the Kinks' greatest albums ever! The semi-concept album traces the woes, worries, and hopes of a British family, as one half is on the verge of emigration to Australia. The work comes out of the sort of songwriting that Ray Davies had been perfecting on albums like Village Green and Something Else – but the overall style is more sophisticated, yet not nearly as self-indulgent as some of the 70s concept clunkers. Instead, the songs are brilliantly tight, and stand on their own well past the concept of the original album. Titles include "Victoria", "Brainwashed", "Australia", "Shangri-La", "Mr Churchill Says", and "Yes Sir No Sir". CD version comes in a great book-styled cover, with very detailed notes – and CD2 features the Great Lost Dave Davies album – with titles that include "This Man He Weeps Tonight", "Mindless Child Of Motherhood", "Mr Shoemaker's Daughter", "Lincoln County", "Do You Wish To Be A Man", "Creeping Jean", and "Mr Reporter". Also features bonus tracks – "Plastic Man (stereo)", "Kign Kong (mono)", "Drivin (mono)", "Australia (Australian mono single edit)", "Lincoln County (mono single edit)", "Creeping Jean (mono single edit)", and "Hold My Hand (mono)". Finders Keepers (UK), 1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from Polish composer Andrzej Korzynski – penned for a legendary horror film from the early 80s! The movie goes way beyond typical grit and gore – with a surreal bent that's made it the stuff of much discussion over the years – and Korzynski's music definitely lives up to the spirit of the images on the screen – mixing 80s electronics with offbeat strings, odd percussion, and other compelling bits – often used in very short songs that shift often throughout the course of the album – easily making the record one of the most playful we've ever heard from Finders Keepers – yet also one of the darkest too! A few sweet keyboard melodies offset some of the spookiness in a nice way – and titles include "Helen Has Green Eyes", "Opetanie 1", "The Night The Screaming Stops", "Blue Ford B AZ6", "Heinrick's Demise", "Mark Looks In The Fridge", "What Is It", and "Closely Observed Anna". A landmark album of hard-rocking soul – and a record that broke open both genres for a generations to come! The set's about as classic as you can get for Little Richard – filled with killer numbers that jump around boldly in some heavy New Orleans piano-led grooves – all topped by Richard's raw, raspy, utterly amazing vocals! And sure, you may know some cuts here from oldies radio, but together they really have a heck of a lot of power – and stand as a testament to the fresh genius that Little Richard represented at this early point – a sound that hundreds would try to copy, but nobody could ever hope to match. Titles include "Tutti Frutti", "Rip It Up", "True, Fine Mama", "Long Tall Sally", "She's Got It", "Oh Why", "Baby", and "Slippin' & Slidin". PilotPilot – The Albums (From The Album Of The Same Name/Second Flight/Morin Heights/Two's A Crowd/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
EMI/7T's (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99
Sharp hooks, huge melodies, and 70s guitar pop greatness from Pilot – a genius pop group who only gave the world a handful of records, all of them pretty darn great! From The Album Of The Same Name includes their signature tune, "Magic" – and it's one of those songs everyone knows, whether or not they no who made it – but Pilot soars all around on these tunes. The guitars have punch, but the falsetto vocals are the main cabin of this vessel – and it's grand 70s soft rock of the first order! Other tracks include "Just A Smile", Lucky For Some", "Girl Next Door", "Sooner Or Later", "Never Give Up", "Sky Blue", "Never Give Up", and "Over The Moon". Second Flight is the excellent second album from Pilot, really perfecting the guitars, keyboards and vocals and hooks formula that shot them into the pop consciousness a year or so earlier – probably their best album ever! The opener "You're My No 1" is so catchy, we can hardly believe it's not a throwback pop radio staple, and the record has a few of tracks nearly as grand. The vocals & harmonies are better arranged, and the guitars and keyboards are in that great comfort zone between the glam pop of the previous couple years and the new wave pop to come. Somewhat silly bubble gum lyricism, sure, but it's tasty stuff! Other tracks include "January", "Love Is", "Call Me Round", "To You Alone", "Passion Piece", "Dear Artist" and more, plus the bonus demos "You're Devotion", "Love Is", "January" and "Lady Luck". Morin Heights is later work from 70s soft rock tunesmiths Pilot – a couple years on from their biggest hit, but still making gloriously catchy tunes! The hallmarks of their earlier stuff is here, with some twists & turns. The lyrics are the kind of lovestruck or lovelorn naivete that's cloying to some, and hopelessly endearing to others – relying more this time out and an overall catchiness than huge choruses and hummable singles. We'd fly with these guys anytime! Titles include "Hold On", "Canada", "First After Me", "Steps", "The Mover", "Penny In My Pocket", and "Maniac". Two's A Crowd is the last full 70s album from Pilot – just a duo by this point, but working with all the punch and panache of their early records! As before, their ability for hook-heavy tunes is amazing – as there's so many numbers here that could have been huge AM radio hits, but which also have some surprisingly thoughtful lyrical touches, and arrangements that are simple, but which really pack a hell of a punch. Titles include "Monday Tuesday", "Big Screen Kill", "Creeping Round At Midnight", "Library Door", and "Mr Do Or Die". CD features lots of related bonus tracks – including "Pamela", "Ra Ta Ta", "Just Let Me Be", "Maniac", "Us", "Lady Luck", "No Ties No Strings", "Are You In Love", "Just A Smile", and "Stop & Let Go". RCA (Italy), 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
Patty Pravo looks a bit creepy on the cover, but the images inside make her look really lovely – and the sound of the record lies somewhere in between! The album's in the territory of offbeat late 60s work by Rita Lee or Brigitte Fontaine – equally distinct, and a strong statement from a singer who could have stuck in the mainstream, but chose to explore lots of unusual territory on these tunes – a mix of modes that runs from dreamy to groovy to downright spooky – with some nice help on arrangements from Paolo Ormi. The songs include many familiar numbers, transformed in the approach – and titles include "The Day That My Love Went Away", "Per Te", "La Tua Voce", "Motherless Child", "Il Mio Fiore Nero", "Non Je Ne Regrette Rien", "Perche Sei Il Mio Uomo", and "Una Conchiglia". Maybe our favorite album from Procol Harum – a set that adds in some wonderful use of strings to the group's unique style – almost moving forward on the promise of the earlier single "Whiter Shade Of Pale", moving into much deeper territory overall! There's something about Procol Harum on their early album's that's really indescribable – certainly an influence from blues and roots, but this really striking step forward with their song ideas and overall construction – not into jamming or progressive modes, like some of their contemporaries – although they're certainly never afraid to rock – but almost this balance between personal poetry and brashness, with kind of a slightly creepy current at times – as illustrated beautifully by the image on the cover. Titles include the completely wonderful "A Salty Dog", p0lus "Wreck Of The Hesperus", "Boredom", "The Devil Came To Kansas", "Too Much Between Us", "All This & More", and "The Milk Of Human Kindness". Something Weird/Modern Harmonic, 1967. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
Groovy sounds for a somewhat creepy film – an obscure 1967 exploitation documentary about the underground hippie sex scene in San Francisco! The record is almost like a mini-movie in sound – in that it features a narrator describing various scenes in the city's underground, while backed by music that features tabla and sitar, all setting a very psychedelic backdrop! The narration is often upfront and no-nonsense – definitely designed to shock, but also not judging the scene at all – and there's some occasional sound effects, and grunts and groans from the folks onscreen. And if that's not enough, the package also comes with a DVD of the entire film – a very rare b-movie relic that was thought to be lost forever! Really beautiful electronics from the enigmatic Guy Skornik – an artist that we mostly know for his quirky concept record Pour Pauwels, but who sounds here like some of the best electronicians of the German scene of the 70s! All tracks are long and spun out – electronic, but with acoustic elements in the mix – maybe in a mode that's similar to the 70s soundtrack creations of Popol Vuh, Tangerine Dream, or Vangelis – but darker, too – most likely because the music was composed for an obscure film by Alexander Jodorowsky! Yet the music here hardly needs images on a screen – as Skornik's created these wonderfully evocative passages, created with some help from Steve Hillage and members of Cossi Anatz. A great early live set from The Talking Heads – a collection of recordings from the late 70s and early 80s, culled together in a format that almost makes the whole thing come across like a discreet live album! The versions of tunes here are changed up nicely from their studio counterparts – often coming across with some more acoustic touches, or a bit more intimacy on the best numbers – and sharing a spontaneity that we might not have expected from the group, had we only heard them in the studio. Verve, 1968. New Copy 2 LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most far-out, freaked-out albums ever from the Velvet Underground – easily the most experimental set the group ever recorded! The album's awash in really unusual sounds and styles – from the sonic blast of the title cut "White Light/White Heat", to the 17 minute garage/psych jam of "Sister Ray" to the very odd "The Gift" – which is a creepy story about cuckolding, told with voice and instrumentation split over different stereo channels! Other tunes offset the darkness with an eerie touch of sweet – and include "Here She Comes Now", "Lady Godiva's Operation", and "I Heard Her Call My Name". Arguably one of the Velvets' most influential moments – even if it's also one of their least commercially successful! This great 2LP package features loads of sweet extra bits – including "I Heard Her Call My Name (alternate)", "Hey Mr Rain (version one)", "Temptation Inside Your Heart (original mix)", "Stephanie Says (orig mix)", "Beginning To See The Light (early version)", "Hey Mr Rain (version two)", and "Guess I'm Falling In Love (instrumental)". The "Brian" in the title is Brian Eno – as you might guess from that image from Another Green World in the middle of the cover – but the sound of this set is quite different than what you might expect! CD1 imagines the sounds that Eno would talk about informing the music of his youth – tracks that showed up often on jukeboxes stocked to service visiting American GIs, which meant that the were full of raw soul, R&B, and even a bit of jazz – elements that most folks wouldn't tie to Eno, but which you can definitely hear here in arranging and production elements that would show up on his early solo vocal music, and some of the Roxy Music sounds too. Titles include work by The Tokens, Paradons, Lafayettes, Little Willie John, Dinah Washington, Ernie K Doe, Raymond Scott, The Cosmic Rays, Moondog, and Leadbelly. CD2 features more modern moments – a mix of avant jazz, early electronics, and 20th century compositions that tie a more direct link to the ambient universe – titles that include "Dream" by John Cage, "Come Back To Earth With Me" by Louis & Bebe Barron, "Atmospheres (excerpt)" by Gyorgy Ligeti, "Sleepy Time" by Raymond Scott, "Fordommelse" by Elsa Marie Pade, "Rhythmic Variations 1" by Daphne Oram, "Low Speed (excerpt)" by Otto Lueninng, "Ignition" by Tom Dissevelt, "Ectoplasm" by Raymond Scott, and "The Bewitched (Scene 1)" by Harry Partcy. As with previous volumes, the tracks are a superbly-selected batch of songs from the farther reaches of country music – dealing with themes of temptation and salvation, awash with all the evils of mankind that weren't washed away in the pulpit! Titles include "Satan's Wife" by Jesse Floyd, "Turn Your Radio On" by The Statemen Quartet, "It's Nothing To Me" by Loy Clingman, "The Devil" by Ronnie Wolfe, "Satan's Suitcase" by Robert Zehm, "Devil Get Away From Me": by Roy & Georgia & The So & Sos, "Nightmare" by Jack Turner, Ghost Of A Honky Tonk Slave" by Cowbowy Howard Vokes, "On The Cross" by Margie Singleton, "Ghost Town" by Billy Massey, "Singing Shouting Praying" by Bill & Opal Carter with The Country Gents, "Fourth Man" by Reverend Tully McCoy, and "Please Devil" by Bobby Griggs. ✨✧ VariousShadow Knows More – 35 Scary Tales From The Vaults Of Horror ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Totally great sounds for the Halloween season – a mad mix of instrumentals, vocals, and offbeat singles from the late 50s and early 60s – exactly the kind of music that keeps things weird and wild on the last day of October! Some of these gems are in the best novelty mode of the time, while others have more of a horror rock sort of vibe – and together, the package is a wonderful tribute to a near-lost genre – one that maybe got a bit wrecked when groups like The Cramps or Misfits tried to celebrate the sound all year long! 35 tracks in all – including "Tickler" by The Sherwoods, "Beware" by Bill Buchanan, "The Gorilla" by Bert Convy, "The Creep" by Ted Heath, "Voodoo Walk" by Sonny Richards Panics, "Something's Going On In My Room" by Daddy Cleanhead, "Hell's Bells" by David Carroll, "Devil's Den" by Duante Turley, "The Raven" by Freddie Countryman, "The Ghost Song" by Salty Holmes, "When All The Streets Are Dark" by Somethin Smith & The Redheads, "Dear Jeepers" by Bob Guy, and "Ghost Guitars" by Baron Daemon & The Vampires.
