✨✧ Creedence Clearwater RevivalBayou Country ... CD
Fantasy, 1969. Used ... $4.99
Creedence Clearwater Revival may not have actually been born on the bayou – they were long-timers in the San Francisco scene of the 60s – but they do a hell of a job of reinventing swamp rock on this second stunning album! The quartet are a masterpiece of spare, unbridled power – the tremendous guitar and vocals of John Fogerty, strong rhythm guitar support of brother Tom, driving drums of Doug Clifford, and rolling bass of Stu Cook – all forged into a sound that's maybe more perfectly a summation of the blend of blues, funk, rock, and soul than some of the groups of the south were turning out at the time. Tracks include the huge hits "Born On The Bayou" and "Proud Mary" – sitting nicely alongside even more compelling numbers like "Bootleg", "Graveyard Train", "Penthouse Pauper", and "Keep On Chooglin". CD
(Out of print.)

Creedence Clearwater RevivalCreedence Clearwater Revival ... LP
Fantasy, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $14.99
The stunning debut of CCR – a record that still burns with an undeniable fire after all these years! Sure, all the elements here have been copped by many – the fuzzy guitar, lean bluesy groove, and raw soul-inspired vocals of John Fogerty – but the way the group puts them together is tremendous – and there's a lean, raw vibe to the whole record that instantly communicates the urgency the group's music had back in the second half of the 60s! Even the group's take on other artists' songs never sound dated at all – and taken together, the mix of material on the record is even greater than the sum of its parts – with a power that punches more than any of these songs on their own. The whole thing's also a great testament to Fogerty's guitar skills too – with some raw solos that blow away most of the blues rock pretenders of the period – on titles that include "Get Down Woman", "The Working Man", "Gloomy", "Walking On The Water", "Ninety Nine & A Half", "Porterville", and "Susie Q". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label deep groove pressing in a "Suzie Q" cover. Cover has ring and edge wear. Labels have a name in marker.)

Creedence Clearwater RevivalGreen River ... LP
Fantasy, 1968. Very Good+ ... $19.99
Creedence Clearwater Revival at the height of their powers – working in this amazing style that has roots in the swamp rock world of the late 50s, but which is produced with a gritty, almost trippy sort of quality – a mode that uses plenty of echo to really make this magic around the edges of the music! John Fogerty's vocals and guitar are razor-sharp throughout – and some of the album's lesser-known gems really help you situate the sound of the group past their hits – as a way of getting at the power they brought to the Cali scene when they first emerged. Titles include the classic "Bad Moon Rising" – plus "Green River", "Commotion", "Wrote A Song For Everyone", "Lodi", "Cross Tie Walker", and "Sinister Purpose". LP, Vinyl record album

Craft, 1969. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
The complete Woodstock performance by Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1969 – brought together here as an official album for the first time ever! CCR were a very important part of that legendary rock festival, but didn't get placement on the original record in a way that lived up to their presence at the concert – a fact that's nicely corrected here, with a double-length album that brings together every song they played that night in 1969! The set features a very long jamming take on "Suzie Q" – plus "Green River", "Born On The Bayou", "Proud Mary", "Bad Moon Rising", "I Put A Spell On You", "Night Time Is The Right Time", "Keep On Chooglin", "Commotion", and "Bootleg". It's hard to get any more classic than this for Creedence Clearwater Revival – as this legendary late 60s album is definitely the place where it all comes together! The pairing of John Fogerty's lead guitar and the scratching rhythm guitar of brother Tom really sounds wonderful here – driven on by tight bass and drums, but always with this rootsy edge that stretches from the Bay Area scene way down to the bayou! Titles include the classic "Down On The Corner" and a great version of "The Midnight Special" – plus "It Came Out Of The Sky", "Side Of The Road", "Effigy", "Don't Look Now", and "Fortunate Son". CD

Brian EnoDiscreet Music (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Obscure/Astralwerks, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe not the first album from the legendary Band – but a record in which the group get everything completely right all the way through – and sparkle with that special sound that continues to influence generations of music makers, and music lovers! All the great elements the group were bringing to their work with Bob Dylan are in place here – but the focus is completely different, with this warm glow that really fits the vocals of Levon Helm, and a sense of unified vision that makes it really hard to even come up with a match for the energy of the group on this album. The great John Simon adds a few special touches to the overall sound – and titles include "Rockin Chair", "Across The Great Divide", "When You Awake", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Look Out Cleveland", and "King Harvest". 2CD 50th anniversary edition features lots of bonus tracks – including 13 more early, alternate, and instrumental versions of tracks on the album – and a bonus 11 track Live At Woodstock 1969 set, with original rough mixes of tunes that include "I Shall Be Released", "This Wheel's On Fire", "Long Black Veil", "Ain't No More Cane On The Brazos", "Tears Of Rage", "Chest Fever", and "We Can Talk". ✨✧ David BowieAladdin Sane ... LP
RCA, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
One of our favorite David Bowie albums ever! Aladdin Sane was a real turning point for Bowie – recorded on the heels of the tremendously popular Ziggy Stardust album, but really pushing the boundaries past the more straight-ahead rock and glam of that record. Instead of just sitting on his laurels, Bowie tripped out into a wilder, weirder world with this one – mixing together elements of some of the baroque arrangements of early records, with the meaner leaner sound of the 70s – populating the songs with freaks, weirdos, and odd characters that gave the whole thing a really creepy edge. The whole thing's an oft-overlooked gem that, to us, is truly one of Bowie's most magical moments – and titles include "Drive In Saturday", "Panic In Detroit", "Aladdin Sane", "Watch That Man", "The Jean Genie", "The Prettiest Star", "Time", and "Lady Grinning Soul". David BowieLodger ... LP
RCA, 1979. Very Good Gatefold ... $19.99
The brilliant consummation of Bowie's late 70s years in Berlin – a record that showed he could take the experiments in sound he was crafting with Brian Eno, and turn them back into the kind of creepily catchy rock tunes that first made him a legend! Eno's help on the record is still quite strong – heard very well in the record's use of odd electronics and exotic themes – of a sort that Eno would later explore on his own with David Byrne. But the real charm here is pure Bowie – with an unabashed flair for a dramatic lyric, a well-chosen use of a heavier guitar, and a sense of personality and poise that makes the record one of his most unified ever! Titles include "Red Sails", "Look Back In Anger", "Repetition", "Boys Keep Swinging", "Red Money", "Yassassin", and "DJ". LP, Vinyl record album

Tim BuckleyLook At The Fool ... LP
DiscReet, 1973. Very Good+ ... $11.99
The last album that Tim Buckley ever gave the world – and a great leaping-off point for speculation about what he might have done, had he not left the planet too soon! Tim's actually beginning to explore a bit of funk in his music here – still using that amazing voice with all of its range from the early Elektra years – but often set to backings that feature heavy drums from Earl Palmer, tight bass from Chuck Rainey, and keyboards from Mike Melvoin – all cats who can be tight, but never slick – and whose groove is more than loose enough to let Buckley direct the whole proceedings. Given that Tim has an occasional raw rasp, and a very offbeat way with his lyrics, the mix of elements is actually not that far from the funk of Betty Davis on her first two albums – with a similar shrug towards any easy genre categorizations. Titles include "Freeway Blues", "Look At The Fool", "Tijuana Moon", "Mexicali Voodoo", "Down In The Street", "Wanda Lou", and "Bring It On Up". LP, Vinyl record album

Jess ConradJess For You – The Definitive Collection ... CD
El (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99
Jess Conrad looks a bit more straight-laced than the usual British rocker of the 60s – and he sounds a bit more here, too – in a set of completely charming tracks that had their birth at the moment when the UK labels weren't above bringing a huge production force to bear on the talents of a singer! Conrad was often as much a screen actor as he was a singer – and in a way, he's maybe a bit like a British version of Tommy Sands – charming at the start, and able to bring a subtle sense of drama to his vocals – one that's never too overdone, but which paces things nicely here – and which creates some surprisingly nice moments in the music, maybe more than you'd expect from his clean teen look. This set features a huge 63 tracks in all – singles issued well into the 70s, along with some unissued tracks too – titles that include "There's Gonne Be A Day", "See The Tinker Ride", "Pussy Cat", "Tempted", "A Little Bit Of Loveliness", "My Idea", "A Conspiracy Of Cards", "Twist My Wrist", "Pretty Jenny", "Unless You Mean It", "Mystery Girl", "Out Of Luck", "There's Gonna Be A Day", "Every Breath I Take", "You Too", "Swimming In Tears", "Lock Up Your Daughters", and "Down Town Tonight". CovenWitchcraft (red & yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Mercury/Real Gone, Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
An insane record – and one of the strangest moments in pop music during the early 70s! Coven are best known to most folks for cutting the message-oriented, sweet folk tune "One Tin Soldier" – but here, they change course completely – and offer up a whole album dedicated to the dark arts and satanic pursuits – with a sonic quality that actually beats just about anything ever recorded by Anton La Vey! The record is ostensibly an "anti-witchcraft" album – but it actually comes off as being totally sincere – in a really great way. Some tunes are song-based – like "Coven In Charing Cross", "Black Sabbath", and "Choke Thirst Die" – but the album also has this really long "Satanic Mass", which even features the Lord's Prayer spoken backwards – completely creepy, in a Kenneth Anger magick sort of way! Brian EnoReflection ... CD
Warp, 2017. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Fantastic sounds from Brian Eno – music that feels like it came right out of the same period as his early discreet music experiments – and which reminds us that, although countless others have explored this territory, nobody does it better than the man who invented it! The sounds are spare, yet never meaningless – beautifully constructed with this hint of melody in the air – a slowness that only seems to create deeper contemplation of the few elements – and a sense of perfection that makes both the silences and sounds resonate with undeniable meaning. One long piece – and a record that we'd put on a par with his classic Music For Airports! CD

Two full albums from the overlooked Flys – plus a huge amount of bonus tracks too – finally restoring the group's lost musical legacy to all of its late 70s glory! The Flys hail from the UK scene of the late 70s – and recorded in the punk generation, but with a style that's maybe a bit earlier than that – kind of a touch of psych influence, filtered through leaner late 70s, but all with the punch of a power pop record too – a blend that maybe never got the group the attention they deserved at the time, but which really sounds fantastic here! The records are filled with catchy songs that really have an edge – kind of like early Rough Trade singles, or the more tuneful Television songs – and the 2CD set features all the tracks from the albums Waikiki Beach Refugees and Own – plus 27 more bonus tracks! Titles include "Energy Boy", "Fascinate Me", "Looking For New Hearts", "We Don't Mind The Rave", "Beverly", "Through The Windscreen", "Cheap Days", "I Don't Know", "Fun City", "Can I Crash Here", "Love & A Molotov Cocktail", "Program", "Come On Stupid", "Down Your End Of The Phone", "Fly V Fly", "Name Dropping", and lots lots more. Finders Keepers (UK), 1981. New Copy ... $22.99
Amazing sounds from Polish composer Andrzej Korzynski – penned for a legendary horror film from the early 80s! The movie goes way beyond typical grit and gore – with a surreal bent that's made it the stuff of much discussion over the years – and Korzynski's music definitely lives up to the spirit of the images on the screen – mixing 80s electronics with offbeat strings, odd percussion, and other compelling bits – often used in very short songs that shift often throughout the course of the album – easily making the record one of the most playful we've ever heard from Finders Keepers – yet also one of the darkest too! A few sweet keyboard melodies offset some of the spookiness in a nice way – and titles include "Helen Has Green Eyes", "Opetanie 1", "The Night The Screaming Stops", "Blue Ford B AZ6", "Heinrick's Demise", "Mark Looks In The Fridge", "What Is It", and "Closely Observed Anna". The album's got a slightly more mature feel than some of Longet's first for A&M – great Nick DeCaro arrangements that show some of the deeper elements creeping into pop at the end of the 60s – including some surprising use of acoustic guitar, which really helps transform the sound, and brings out an earthy, natural quality that makes Claudine sound sexier than ever! A heavier, darker prime era set from Massive Attack – and rightly remembered as a classic! The grooves are still really strong, but the trip hop pioneers are delving more deeply into a bass heavy dub trip with a deep, rumbling bottom running throughout the tracks and some distorted guitar and reverb drenched key and sample bits punctuating the cuts and moody vocals. Stunningly strong to this day – which is no mean feat given the rapid musical evolutions of the 90s onward! Includes "Angel", "Risingson", "Teardrop" (which features vocals by Cocteau Twin Elizabeth Fraser), "Inertia Creeps", "Exchange", "Dissolved Girl", "Man Next Door", "Black Milk", "Mezzanine" and "Group Four". 2CD set features a 20th Anniversary mix of the record – and a bonus CD with a Mezzanine Mad Professor selection of mixes – all handled by Mad Professor, with titles that include "Metal Banshee (Mad Professor mix one)", "Teardrop (Mazaruni dub one)", "Group Four (security forces dub)", "Wire (leaping dub)", "Inertia Creeps (floating on dubwise)", "Angel (angel dust)", "Exchange (mountain steppers dub)", and "Risingson (setting sun dub two)". A pretty great solo performance from the legendary Thurston Moore – recorded at the Art Institute Of Chicago, as live accompaniment to the film Street, by James Nares – and maybe some of the most compelling sounds we've heard from Moore in awhile! There's almost an Eraserhead feel to the music at times – dreamy, yet creepy – and other moments bring in some avant jazz tones, yet played without any jazz chops at all – more as sonic textures that nestle down nicely in the mix of noise and surprising melodic moments. Titles include "Edweena", "The Making Of A Soul", and "Ship's A Going Down". 2CD set features an insane amount of material – the full album, plus live tracks "Ship's A Goin Down (rehearsal)", "Ship's A Goin Down (live 1986)", and "Mourning Glories (live 2014)". CD2 features the full X Is For Xtra "conclusion" – with titles that include "Love Sprong", "Fairly Well", "Where To Begin", "New Mexico Dream", "Solome & Goiter", "O Solo Meow", and "Tune Of The Unknown". Guy SkornikTusk ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $16.99
Really beautiful electronics from the enigmatic Guy Skornik – an artist that we mostly know for his quirky concept record Pour Pauwels, but who sounds here like some of the best electronicians of the German scene of the 70s! All tracks are long and spun out – electronic, but with acoustic elements in the mix – maybe in a mode that's similar to the 70s soundtrack creations of Popol Vuh, Tangerine Dream, or Vangelis – but darker, too – most likely because the music was composed for an obscure film by Alexander Jodorowsky! Yet the music here hardly needs images on a screen – as Skornik's created these wonderfully evocative passages, created with some help from Steve Hillage and members of Cossi Anatz. Titles include "Elise & Tusk Reunited", "Poo Lorn 1", "Elise Liberates Tusk", "Poo Lorn 2", "Goodnight Ram Baba", "Elise On The Run", and "Crossing The River". LP, Vinyl record album

Alexander Skip SpenceAndOarAgain (3LP set) (2019 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Modern Harmonic, Late 60s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $55.99 59.99
A landmark album from Skip Spence – the onetime lead singer of Moby Grape, cast out of the group on his own by the time of this debut solo album – a record that's as powerful as it is fragile, and which has been the one lasting musical legacy of the man himself! The record almost sunk without a trace at the time, but has gone onto become the stuff of legend over the decade – supported by fellow singers, songwriters, and even a fair bit of the music press – who all shine key light on the record's unique, ahead of its time quality! Spence recorded the set for the same Columbia Records that was willing to take a chance on the early Leonard Cohen records – and there's a similarly singular vibe to Skip's approach – one that puts the whole thing at the level of "missed the first time around – but never again!" albums by later-decade legends like Big Star, Nick Drake, and maybe even Cohen. The style is hard to describe – similar reworking of roots-though-psych as Moby Grape, but a lot more intimate too – with so many lost dark corners, the set will be rewarding your ears for years to come! Titles include his original "Cripple Creek", plus "Diana", "Margaret Tiger Rug", "Weighted Down", "Little Hands", "Books Of Moses", "All Come To Meet Her", "Broken Heart", and "War In Peace". This 3CD set is incredible – and features 2 1/2 CDs' worth of previously unreleased material – along with a huge booklet of notes as well! Unreleased tracks include "This Time He Has Come", "It's The Best Thing For You", "Keep Everything Under Your Hat", "If I'm Good", "Furry Heroine", "Fountain", "Doodle", "I Think You & I", "You Know", "My Friend", "The Shape You're In", "I Want A Rock & Roll Band", "She Don't Care", and "Keep Everything Under Your Hat" – plus a huge amount of alternates and unusual versions of songs! A much-needed second set from Stepson – a group who only ever served up one debut album for ABC in the early 70s – then disappeared from the world of rock forever! This collection brings together rare tracks recorded before and after that famous debut – all of them very much in the same mix of fuzz and hard rock that made the group cook so well back in the day – with a searing sort of energy that might match some of the longer-running rock combos of the time. Mute, 1979. Used ... $9.99
The title might seem like a joke – given Throbbing Gristle's reputation for intense noise and dark sounds – but at another level, it's actually a great fit for the spirit of the record too! The sound here is a lot leaner than before – almost as if TG is focusing in on the best elements that made their earlier performances so great – exposing a hidden talent for a song, a groove, and even an occasional melody – in ways that almost refine and filter down the whole of German 70s electronics into a spirit of post-punk expression! Subject matter is still pretty darn dark, and vocals are as creepy as ever – thanks Genesis P – but there's also more of the electronics that Chris & Cosey would soon explore on their own. Titles include "20 Jazz Funk Greats", "Beachy Head", "Still Walking", "Tanith", "Convincing People", "Exotica", "Hot On The Hells Of Love", "Persuasion", "Walkabout", "What A Day", and "Six Six Sixties". One of the most far-out, freaked-out albums ever from the Velvet Underground – easily the most experimental set the group ever recorded! The album's awash in really unusual sounds and styles – from the sonic blast of the title cut "White Light/White Heat", to the 17 minute garage/psych jam of "Sister Ray" to the very odd "The Gift" – which is a creepy story about cuckolding, told with voice and instrumentation split over different stereo channels! Other tunes offset the darkness with an eerie touch of sweet – and include "Here She Comes Now", "Lady Godiva's Operation", and "I Heard Her Call My Name". Edsel (UK), 1980s. New Copy 4CD ... $32.99 37.99
Gary Crowley was a young Capitol Radio DJ at the start of the 80s – which gave him a bird's eye view of all the musical changes that were taking place on the London scene of the time! This 4CD package is a great tribute to those years – and features some of Crowley's favorite tracks from the time – some very rare, some less-so – but all put together in a great package that really reminds us how much vibrant energy was running through music during the period! The tunes are a mix of minor hits and indie classics, post-punk gems and tuneful electro numbers – with a few surprises thrown in along the way – all wrapped up in a cool book-style package, with pages of notes on the music, and lots of images too. Titles include "Stop That Girl" by Vic Godard, "Abandon Ship" by April Showers, "Stop The Rain" by Suede Crocodiles, "Jive Baby On A Saturday Night" by The Jellies, "The Big Bean" by Pigbag, "Klacto Vee Sedstein" by Blue Rondo A La Turk, "Go Deh Yaka" by Monyaka, "Coup" by 23 Skidoo, "If Only" by Funkapolitan, "Slippery People (club)" by The Staple Singers, "Tuesday Sunshine (jock mix)" by The Questions, "Brother Brother" by The Kane Gang, "Be Thankful For What You've Got" by Sunset Gun, "Keep On Keepin On" by The Redskins, "Too Many Creeps" by Bush Tetras, "Is This Really The First Time You've Been In Love" by Jo Boxers, "Get Out Of London (intacontinentalballisticmix)" by Intaferon, "The Alibi (ext mix)" by Fun Boy Three, "It's A Man's Man's Man's World (ext mix)" by Brilliant, and "Looking Good Diving With The Wild Bunch" by Morgan McVey. Great work from a series that never gets old – and which, if anything, seems to keep digging deeper and deeper with each new volume! Modern Harmonic, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $35.99
Something weird, and something very cool too – a set that brings together a whole host of strange and unusual tunes from the glory days of exploitation cinema! These cuts are all from a time when the b-movie underground was playing it fast and loose – trying to get more folks into the theaters with some ultra-sleazy themes – which resulted in wilder music than you might have heard in movies just a few short years before! The package is presented by Something Weird – the video company who've reissued lots of these exploitation films over the years – and the package is kind of a "best of" their on-screen efforts – as it also includes some spoken passages from films, which further make the tunes sound great. The package is divided up into themes – Psychedelic Hippie Freak Out, Rock O Rama Go Go, Deliriously Demented Ditties, and Sleazy Swinging Sounds – with work by Johnny Hawksworth, John Barry, The Group, The Love Generation, Joe Bisko, Alan Hawkshaw, Lee Dowell, The Penny Arcade, Billy Lee Riley, Betty Dickson, John Gabriel, Neil Patrick, Meg Myles, and The Huntington Astronauts. Bear Family (Germany), 1969. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An amazing second chapter to this wonderful series – and like the first, a perfectly-chosen batch of tracks that shows the return of country styles to rock music at the end of the 60s! Most of the artists here are those of the LA scene – who had a surprisingly strong respect for the sounds of Bakersfield and Nashville – but the set also includes some other artists who really fit into the mix well – almost all of them big names of the time, or of later years – but working here in a sound that's still very fresh, and free from all the cliches that crept into country rock in the 70s! Bear Family really took a lot of care with the whole thing – and the set features over 50 pages of notes, telling the track-by-track tale of country rock from 1969 – a set of 23 titles that includes "Level With Your Sense" by The Corvettes, "Sin City" by The Flying Burrito Brothers, "Texas Me" by Sir Douglas Quintet, "Drug Store Truck Driving Man" by The Byrds, "Up On Cripple Creek" by The Band, "Make Me Smile" by Poco, "We Need A Whole Lot More Jesus" by Linda Ronstadt, "Ruby" by The First Edition, "I'm Movin On" by Elvis Presley, "Vaccination For The Blues" by The Sanland Brothers, and "Who's Gonna Mow Your Grass" by Buck Owens. RCA/Parlophone, 1979. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little soundtrack from trash maestro Nicholas Carras – not one of the bigger names in mainstream cinema scoring at the start of the 60s – but in a way that really lets him take off and get creative with a record like this! The album's got a leadoff rock tune, some jazzier charts – ala Elmer Bernstein – and a mix of dramatic orchestrations with moodier, mellower passages – almost currents of exotica at times, all put together to create more than enough drama away from the images on the screen! The most unusual work we've ever heard from this very unusual Japanese group from the early 80s – a dubby, bassy combo who work somewhere in the territory of A Certain Ratio – but also have a complex sound that's all their own! The album only features two long tracks, but each is filled with lots of musical changes and sonic shifts – riffing guitars one minute, atmospheric sounds the next, weird noises at another spot, and filtered vocals that make the whole thing sound nicely creepy – even when there's a bassline that comes in and kicks up the rhythms! There's plenty of studio play going on here – almost as if Martin Hannett were behind the controls, charging the whole thing with his own sense of electricity – and the album's one that can definitely sit nicely next to the darker reaches of Factory Records. Harvest/EMI (UK), 1969/1970. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two albums from this very unique group – back to back on a single CD! First up is the self-titled Forest – a really nice album of trippy rock tracks with lots of nice folksy touches! The group's a trio, all of whom sing lead vocals from time to time – and instrumentation includes organ, harmonium, piano, percussion, guitars, electric harpsichord, mandolin, and cello – all swirling around in a style that's got traces of late work by Tim Hardin, Love, Nico, and early Roy Wood – produced with the nicely understated feel of the late 60s Harvest Records scene. Tunes are nicely simple without sounding cloying – and titles include "Bad Penny", "Fading Light", "A Fantasy You", "While You're Gone", "Do You Want Some Smoke", and "Rain Is On My Balcony". Next is Full Circle – darkly folksy work from Forest – a record with a sound that's somewhere between acid folk and some of the more progressive styles of the time – served up in a blend of mandolin, 12 string guitar, and other acoustic instrumentation – yet with a slightly electric feel at the back of the mix! The vocals are often quite ethereal, and try for a timeless feel – which ends up giving them a slightly creepy quality, but we mean that in a good way. There's almost a slight undercurrent of evil to the record – underscored by song titles like "The Midnight Hanging Of A Runaway Serf", "Famine Song", "Graveyard", and "Do Not Walk In The Rain". CD

Chrysalis, 1981. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nice change in sound for Debbie Harry – thanks to Chic production from Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards – who really help the solo singer find a groove that's quite different than her work in Blondie! The style's a mixture of the funky club that Chic did so well, with elements that lean a bit more towards an early 80s rockish dancefloor – almost with a vibe that echoes some of the UK imports trickling over to these shores at the time, but with a definite New York vibe underneath! The setting gives Harry's vocals a great way to hit a more playful nature – that sound that was creeping in a bit in Blondie, but which some folks thought was wrong for the group – and Chris Stein is still on hand to bring in some street-sensitive riffing guitar. Lion, 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most hypnotic folk albums we've ever heard – far from any sort of conventional folk of the 60s, and more in a moody style of 70s singer-songwriter material from the underground – yet graced with these acoustic guitar lines that ebb and flow wonderfully – creating a circular feel alongside the vocals, with the same sort of energy we might find in the work of Sandy Bull! Michael Oosten's music is more lyric-based, but even his smart words know the right points to give way to the guitar – and let its elliptical lines flow forth and really bring the tunes home. The original album's a real Midwestern obscurity – but it's the sort that also should have gotten much wider circulation at the time, due to the quality of the music. One of Frank Zappa's biggest-selling albums of the early 70s and it's also one of his best ever! Over-Nite Sensation finds Zappa's leftfield weirdness and sly social satire at play within adventurous, but accessible arrangements. It's got some early fusiony rock bits paired with heavy drums and muscular rock riffs – and it's a hell of a great sound! The songs themselves are sharp here, too. A later effort from Tim Buckley with a bigger sound and more of a straight ahead approach – with a big nod in the groove direction and some R&B creeping in! In lesser hands, Greetings From LA could be considered more of a "commercial" album than the unpredictable stylistic variances of Tim's earlier records, but his vocals and depth of passion keeps it a riveting experience. Rolling boogie piano, some vamping organ, groovy strings, and even some female chorus backing vocals bring elements of 70s soul and juke joint sounds into the mix – while Buckley's emoting is on par with earlier work – even if some of the lyrics are kind of on the bawdy side. The semi-concept album traces the woes, worries, and hopes of a British family, as one half is on the verge of emigration to Australia. The work comes out of the sort of songwriting that Ray Davies had been perfecting on albums like Village Green and Something Else – but the overall style is more sophisticated, yet not nearly as self-indulgent as some of the 70s concept clunkers. Instead, the songs are brilliantly tight, and stand on their own well past the concept of the original album. Titles include "Victoria", "Brainwashed", "Australia", "Shangri-La", "Mr Churchill Says", and "Yes Sir No Sir". CD version comes in a great book-styled cover, with very detailed notes – and CD2 features the Great Lost Dave Davies album – with titles that include "This Man He Weeps Tonight", "Mindless Child Of Motherhood", "Mr Shoemaker's Daughter", "Lincoln County", "Do You Wish To Be A Man", "Creeping Jean", and "Mr Reporter". Also features bonus tracks – "Plastic Man (stereo)", "Kign Kong (mono)", "Drivin (mono)", "Australia (Australian mono single edit)", "Lincoln County (mono single edit)", "Creeping Jean (mono single edit)", and "Hold My Hand (mono)". ✨✧ Alexander Skip SpenceAndOarAgain (3CD set – with book) ... CD
Modern Harmonic, Late 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ John ZacherleyZacherle's Monster Gallery (green & orange vinyl) ... LP
Crestview/Real Gone, 1963. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A classic album by one of the coolest cats to ever record a Halloween record – Philly TV figure John Zacherley, whose recorded career consists almost entirely of horror parody material! Zach's got a strong ability to emulate the kind of creepy figures in older horror films of the 30s and 40s – focusing mostly on their goofier sides, which are then used to present the album's whimsical horror-themed numbers, all set to jazzy backings by Gerald Alters! Imagine Bela Lugosi performing his different characters on a jazz vocal album, and you'll get part of the flavor of this classic – which includes the titles "Baying At The Moon", "Transylvania PTA", "Frank & Drac Are Back", "Coolest Little Monster", "Come With Me To Transylvania", and "Spider Man Lullaby". ✨✧ ComusFirst Utterance (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Dawn/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A legendary group who never fully got their due – and maybe one of the creepier acts on the British scene at the start of the 70s! The cover art probably gives things away – but the sound of the record is even more haunting – with some acoustic elements that echo the acid folk movement of the time, but more dynamic energy at other spots that resonate more with prog – all topped by vocals that have a completely sinister sound that really makes the group stand out! Despite the acoustic guitars, these guys are hardly the traditional-leaning style of some of their folk rock contemporaries – and, if anything, it feels like they opened up some Pandora's box from the past, and let out all this weird Wicker Man energy. Titles include "Bitten", "The Prisoner", "Diana", "The Herald", "Song To Comus", and "Drip Drip". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MetallicaRide The Lightning (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Elektra/Blackened, 1984. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of greatest heavy metal albums of all time – a pioneering blast of mid 80s thrash from Metallica at an early peak! Say what you will about Metallica's later career triumphs and failures, there's no overstating how huge their impact was on metal and hard rock early on, and their best few records are incredible to this day. This may well be they're very best album – the culmination of a couple years of slow-building word-of-mouth reputation-building for genre work that can't be praised highly enough. One metal classic after another: "Fight Fire With Fire", "Ride The Lightning", "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Fade To Black", "Trapped Under Ice", "Escape", "Creeping Death" and "The Call Of Ktulu". Decca/Real Gone, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A very cool little record from the 60s – even if it does try to trick you into thinking that Herman Munster and his family are making music on the set! Instead, the Munsters here are a bunch of top shelf studio musicians, working with a trio of singers – in a mix of tunes that really echo the best surf and hot rod styles of the time! Songs are plenty playful, and definitely have lots of the best monster rock elements that were big at the time – even if there's maybe a bit more sunshine in the sound than some of the other albums of this nature. Three tracks are instrumental, the rest are vocal, and titles include "Vampire Vamp", "Herman's Place", "Munster Creep", "Eerie Beach", "TV Monster Show", "Down In The Basement", "Munster Coach", and "Ride The Midnight Special". Modern Harmonic, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ VariousTrash Can Records Vol 4 – House Of Horrors – One Man's Trash Is Another Man's Treasure (10 inch LP) ... LP
Stag O Lee (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Get these records out of the trash and on to your turntable – because they're way too good to throw away! In fact, they're so good they're great – the kind of sweet little platters that were so ahead of their time, they were probably never appreciated back in the day – and which often have a kind of genre-hopping, category-stomping quality that makes them ripe for rediscovery all these many years later! As with other collections on the Stag-O-Lee label, there's a real love for the obscure going on here – and a fair bit of the tunes mix together raunchy rock or R&B instrumentation with lots of Latin or exotic currents in the rhythms. Titles on volume 4 include "Spooks" by Louis Armstrong, "Last Ride" by the Dukes, "Tormented" by Eddy Rogers, "Jazz Dramatic" by Det Moor Orchestra, "Midnight Rain" by Garry Warren, "Gray Skies" by Sheri Lee Douglas & The Gondoliers, "Just A Walkin Down The Street Of Regret" by Don Luce, "Creepin" by Starlighters, "The Raven" by Jackie Brooks, and "Foggy Mist" by Debbie Young. ✨✧ Humble PiePerformance – Rockin The Fillmore ... LP
A&M, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Some of the most hard-hitting work ever recorded by Humble Pie – and that's saying a lot, given the power of the group on other albums! The performance is very unbridled – really open-ended, at a level that showcases not just the mindbending early guitar talents of Peter Frampton (something you'd never guess if you only knew his hits), but also the raw power that Steve Marriott could unleash in the group – quite a change from his work with the Small Faces. The tunes include a number of non-Humble Pie tracks, given a raw bluesy workout on extended versions – and titles include "Four Day Creep", "Stone Cold Fever", "I'm Ready", "Rollin Stone", and "I Walk On Gilded Splinters". A&M/MFP (UK), 1969. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Maybe our favorite album from Procol Harum – a set that adds in some wonderful use of strings to the group's unique style – almost moving forward on the promise of the earlier single "Whiter Shade Of Pale", moving into much deeper territory overall! There's something about Procol Harum on their early album's that's really indescribable – certainly an influence from blues and roots, but this really striking step forward with their song ideas and overall construction – not into jamming or progressive modes, like some of their contemporaries – although they're certainly never afraid to rock – but almost this balance between personal poetry and brashness, with kind of a slightly creepy current at times – as illustrated beautifully by the image on the cover. Titles include the completely wonderful "A Salty Dog", p0lus "Wreck Of The Hesperus", "Boredom", "The Devil Came To Kansas", "Too Much Between Us", "All This & More", and "The Milk Of Human Kindness". ✨✧ Frank ZappaZappa In New York ... LP
DiscReet, 1977. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Frank Zappa live in the 70s – working with a surprisingly hip large ensemble, with all the sharp changes and unusual moments of his classic studio albums! Like some of Zappa's other concert performances, there's an approach that steps a few years back – clearly to please the group coming to hear their favorites, but in a way that also offers up a nice sharpening-up of the music too – especially given that the whole thing's happening live on stage! There's some great jazz help here – horns from The Brecker Brothers, Lou Marini, Ronnie Cuber, and Tom Malone – plus wonderful vibes from Dave Samuels and keyboards from Eddie Jobson – and even a bit of narration from Don Pardo. Titles include "I'm The Slime", "Titties & Beer", "Cruisin For Burgers", "The Illinois Enema Bandit", "Punky's Whips", "Big Leg Emma", and "Sofa". LP, Vinyl record album
