Sam PrekopComma ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A compelling step forward for Sam Prekop – a key member of Sea & Cake for many years, but maybe an even more engaging artist on his own! This set's different than some of Sam's previous records – in that it's all electric, really electronic – with modes that hearken back to early ambient experiments, and some of the Japanese work of the 80s – but which also ties things in more strongly to the crucial contemporary vibe of his scene! These aren't retro electronic modes – as some are freewheeling in rhythm, almost evoking the early Thrill Jockey records of Oval – while others are tuneful and more direct, but still with edges around the sides – a subtle rasp that makes it clear that the record is as much a project of Prekop the visual artist as it is the musician. Titles include "Comma", "September Remember", "Never Met", "Above Our Heads", "Circle Line", "Summer Places", "The New Last", and "Park Line". CD

✨✧ Byzantium/OraHalfway Dreaming – Anthology 1969 to 1975 (Ora/Byzantium/Seasons Changing/Live Studio/bonus tracks) (5CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 5CD ... $34.99
The complete works of Byzantium – including their rare albums for A&M, their self-released album of the mid 70s, and their initial outing as the group Ora! Ora was a wonderfully lean group – sing-songy material, handled with a mostly acoustic vibe, but not entirely folksy either. Yet the first Byzantium album is something completely different entirely – a nice set that's almost funky at times – proggy guitars, but filtered down into leaner modes that maybe mark the record as a key early effort from Chaz Jankel – who handles both the electric stings and some of the piano and organ work of the group. There's a nice balance with acoustic guitars too – and warmer harmonies at points, too – which makes for a record that's filled with overlooked surprises! Seasons Changing is excellent work from Byzantium – a group who never fully got their due, but who feature strong early guitar work from Chaz Jankel – in ways that are very different than his records of the 80s! The group show a strong understanding of the overall sound of their music - maybe the same command of the studio that later made Jankel so great – and the lead vocals of Robin Lamble and Mick Barakan trade back and forth nicely from tune to tune – often harmonized with an America-like warmth, but set up in very different song formats. Next is the much more obscure Live/Studio album – work from 1974 that the group issued themselves – and which includes some continued development of their sound, although without Jankel in the lineup. Last up is High Time which features rare live material from 1974 and 1975 – previously download-only, here on CD for the first time! 61 tracks in all, including some rare bonus material and demos – plus a nice booklet of notes. ✨✧ NirvanaMTV Unplugged In New York (180 gram pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Geffen, 1994. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Nirvana's classic session for MTV's Unplugged – slowing down the tempo and stripping away the feedback and squalling electric guitars of their early 90s classics – as well as showing Kurt Cobain's command of cover tunes! It shows the essence of the great Cobain songwriting, as well has his gift for interpreting others – drawing parallels from Bowie,to The Meat Puppets to traditional folk and blues. Amazing! Includes "About A Girl", "The Man Who Sold The World", "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", "Lake Of Fire", "All Apologies", "Dumb", "Polly" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
