Philippe BesombesPhilippe Besombes Anthology 1975 to 1979 (Libra/Esombeso/Hydravion/Stratos Airlines/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
Purple Pyramid, Late 1970s. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99 On May 24, 2024
A great package – one that features some wildly experimental work from French electronics whiz Philippe Besombes! First up is the album Libra – tripped out electronics meet progressive rock jamming – all in a weird and wonderful film score from the early 70s! The record's one of the best by French experimentalist Philippe Besombes from the time – and it's got a style that sort of starts in the territory of Francois De Roubaix similar electronic work for film – but gets a lot darker and noisier right away! There's a textural depth here that's really great – almost a pre-industrial music exploration of sounds – but the work's also not that over-indulgent, either – and Besombes always has a great way of getting back to a tune, especially on the shorter tracks. Titles include "La Plage", "Rugby", "Ceremonie", "Hache 06", "La Ville", "Les Cosmonautes", "Tis A Song", "Boogimmick", and "PJF 261". Next is the record Esombeso – also release as Ceci Est Cela – a strange mix of sound library electronics and much more experimental work from Philippe Besombes – a set that carries echoes of some of the best Italian soundtrack electronics of the 70s, but which also features much darker, more turgid moments as well! The album collects some of Besombes' performances for ballet and other settings – and stands as an even starker document of his talents than some of the other albums issued under his name in the 70s. Titles include "Pawa"," Geant", "Seul", and "Ceci Est Cela". Next are two more albums done under the name Hydravion – both of which show Besombes turning his electronics into tighter, more song-based territory – although not without some noise from time to time – shorter tracks that sometimes get a bit tuneful, but which are still light years from mainstream music of the period. CD set also features bonus tracks for the first two albums – 8 more numbers that include "L'Or Des Fous", "Traversee", "Trio", "Piano Prepare", "Orgue Hache", and "Chocolate Cream". CD

Moby GrapeMoby Grape ... LP
Columbia, 1967. Near Mint- ... $43.99
The self-titled groovy rock masterpiece from Moby Grape – one of the greatest things to come out of San Francisco after Ghiradelli Chocolate and sourdough bread! The Moby Grape LP is one of the finest, and leanest LPs we can think of from the '67 school of Bay Area psychedelic rock – with ome genius work by a young Skip Spence & co that leans on a sound that grows up and out from a blues based approach into the stratophere! – original LP tracks include "Omaha", "Hey Grandma", "Changes", "Sitting By The Window", "Ain't No Use", "Mr Blues", "Naked, If I Want To", "8:05", "Lazy Me", "Someday" and more LP, Vinyl record album
(70s pressing, in the censored cover with "Giant Poster" text, with bumped corners. Includes the poster, still unused!)

UndertonesHypnotised (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
BMG, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 29.98
The smoking second set from The Undertones – a record that maybe has the group moving slightly away from the rougher punk territory of their debut, but still at a level that's full of raw guitar-driven power throughout! Feargal Sharkey's become a hell of a singer by this point – and really knows how to work that raspy charm to great effect – as clearly one of the most distinct punk vocalists of his generation! The guitar interplay by the O'Neills is great too – and titles include "See That Girl", "More Songs About Chocolate & Girls", "Hard Luck", "The Way Girls Talk", "My Perfect Cousin", "What's With Terry", "Girls That Don't Talk", "Nine Times Out Of Ten", "Wednesday Week", and "Tearproof". ✨✧ Standells/Choclate Watch Band/Sidewalk SoundsRiot On Sunset Strip ... LP
Tower, 1967. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest of the AIP late 60s rock and roll soundtracks – featuring some killer tracks by The Standells, plus a few more by The Chocolate Watch Band, and other odd psyche rock bands of the time! This one's got a feel that's a lot more real rock and roll than some of the other Tower soundtracks of the time – and the overall intensity of the film is stronger than the usual schlock biker movie. Titles include "Get Away From Here" and "Riot On Sunset Strip" by The Standells, "Don't Need Your Lovin" and "Sitting There Standing" by The Chocolate Watch Band, "The Sunset Theme" and "Make The Music Pretty" by The Sidewalk Sounds, "Children In The Night" by The Mom's Boys, "Sunset Sally" by The Mugwumps, and "Like My Baby" by Drew. ✨✧ VariousNuggets – Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era – Vol 2 ... CD
Rhino, Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of those few classic cases where a compilation of tracks was maybe even more influential than the original music itself – as this early 70s collection of 60s material turned out to shape and influence generations for decades to come! Guitar genius Lenny Kaye put the set together famously for Elektra Records in 1972 – as a reminder that, just a few years before, there were some amazing sounds that were not only brewing up in local indie scenes around the country, but also on the radio as well – even though most of those groups had been pushed into relative obscurity by the rise of soft rock, hard rock, and classic rock of the early 70s! The package is a return to the pre-prog years, with an especially strong ear for garage-tuned tracks that would go on to shape later punk, 80s indie, and lots more underground sounds in the future. Volume 2 includes tracks by Kim Fowley, the Elastik Band, Chocolate Watch Band, Kenny and the Kasuals, Human Beinz, Del-Vetts, Squires, Night Crawlers, and the Beau Brummels – 31 tracks total. CD

✨✧ KaleidoscopeBernice ... LP
Epic, 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The second album by this excellent psych rock outfit from the late 60s – a group that featured a young David Lindley on lead guitar and "country vocals", plus instrumentation that includes additional guitar, bass, percussion, harmonica, saw, and oud! The whole thing's a bit in the Country Joe mode, but with less of a silly edge – and titles include "Chocolate Whale", "Ballad Of Tommy Udo", "New Blue Ooze", and "Soft & Easy". Also features the jazzy break track "Bernice"! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Orang-UtanOrang-Utan ... LP
Bell/Guerssen (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
There's plenty of monkey business going on with this one and only album from Orang-Utan – as the group were actually named Hunter, from the UK – but the set was issued in the US under a different band name, and without the knowledge of the group! Yet that hardly keeps it from being a killer, though – as the record's got this raw early 70s British hard rock energy – heavy bass, searing guitar, and nicely nasty lead vocals from singer Nobby Clarke! Titles include "Love Queen", "Fly Me High", "Magic Playground", "Slipping Away", "I Can See Inside Your Head", and "Chocolate Piano". LP, Vinyl record album
