✨✧ Colin BlunstoneEnnismore/Journey ... CD
CBS/Voiceprint (UK), 1973/1974. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The second and third solo albums by Colin Blunstone – both great follow-ups to his legendary One Year set! Ennismore is filled with amazing tracks that are perfect for Blunstone's godlike voice – a surprisingly great set that shifts the focus a bit, but with a sound that's really wonderful. The production's a bit fuller than the string-quartet/piano sound of One Year – but the musicians still include most of Colin's old buddies from the Zombies, and Chris White and Rod Argent produced the album as well – coming up with some great inflections that really send home the gentle hooks of the album's tunes! Blunstone's vocals are as magnificent as always – breathily beautiful without sounding cheesy – which is a very fine distinction here, and one that keeps the album far from other adult pop of the time. Tracks include "I Don't Believe In Miracles", "How Wrong Can One Man Be", "Andorra", "Time's Running Out", and "How Could We Dare To Be Wrong". Journey is a bit less sublime than Colin's first two – with tracks that veer a bit more towards the soft rock sound of the 70s, with some compressed AOR touches in place of the floating instrumentation of earlier albums – but it still sounds mighty nice to our ears, as Colin's voice is always a treat, and the record has a irrepressible charm in its optimistic presentation of some of the material. Essentially, if you dig Colin lots, you'll still want this one – as it's got more than a few nice moments – and is more of an evolution of his solo work than a divergence from it. Titles include "Setting Yourself Up", "Smooth Operator", "Shadow Of A Doubt", "It's Magical", "You Who Are Lonely", "Beginning", and "Keep The Curtains Closed Today". CD

✨✧ Lesley DuncanEarth Mother ... LP
CBS (UK), 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lesley Duncan at the height of her powers – really moving past some of the folksy roots that were the stock in trade for female singer/songwriters in the 60s – finding the special sort of territory that should have made her as huge as American contemporaries like Carly Simon or Carole King – even though we'd probably say that Duncan is better than both of them combined! There's a hipness to her tunes that's great – understated emotions, wrapped up in beautiful words – given just the right kind of simple backing in a mix of acoustic and electric elements, with maybe even some occasional nods to the sounds taking place in the Island Records scene at the time. Titles include "Time", "Love Will Never Lose You", "Thunder", "Fortieth Floor", and "Old Friends". LP, Vinyl record album

Bob DylanHighway 61 Revisited (Original Master Recording SACD) ... CD
CBS/Mobile Fidelity, 1965. Used Gatefold ... $18.99
A pivotal moment for Bob Dylan – and maybe one of THE albums of the 60s! The newly-electrified Dylan really takes off here – putting more punch and bit into his already-strong lyrical approach – and twisting things in amazing ways that still leave us breathless all these many years later! And sure, the album gave Bob a few hits – which are nestled in here next to headier tunes that work together perfectly. Titles include "Like A Rolling Stone", "Ballad Of A Thin Man", "It Takes A Lot To Laugh It Takes A Train To Cry", "From A Buick 6", "Desolation Row", "Highway 61 Revisited", and "Queen Jane Approximately". ✨✧ Elkin Y NelsonAngeles Y Demonios (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CBS/Elemental (Spain), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic album from the Spanish scene of the 70s – one divided up into sections of "Angeles" and "Demonios" – the last of which is pretty darn funky! The album starts with the demonic material – which has these great heavy drums and percussion – driving fast and frenzied, while basslines rumble and acoustic guitar provides some nice touches that borrow lots from flamenco, then turn towards hipper 70s styles – all with vocal refrains that really keep things moving! The Angeles material is a bit more laidback, but still pretty great – kind of slow funk overall – and there's this really cool energy to the whole record, part of that young Spanish generation trying to find the best elements of their musical roots, then push them forward with a more soulful, youthful vibe. Titles include "Abran Paso Ahoa", "Jibaro", "Mama High Mama Way", "Ay Mulata Mia", "Tema De Amor", "Anacaona", "Los Invitamos", "Tubalo", "Rosa Rosa", and a nice take on "Ain't No Sunshine". CD features bonus tracks – "Samba Samba", "A Caballo", and "Vamanos". (Latin, Rock) CD

✨✧ Georgie FameTwo Faces Of Fame – The Complete 1967 Recordings (stereo/mono – with bonus tracks) ... CD
CBS/RPM (UK), 1967. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
The two faces of Fame are live and studio – as each side of the original album was recorded in each mode – and this great CD version goes a lot further, with stereo and mono mixes and a huge number of bonus tracks! The live numbers feature the Brit jazz vocalist swinging in a set recorded in early 1967 – done with lots of Hammond organ in the lineup, and an overall style that picks up a lot from Ray Charles and Mose Allison, but filters it through the groovier beat group styles of 60s London. The studio numbers are even better, and feature Georgie singing in more of a jazz-based mode – with lineups that feature some striking players that include Tony Oxley, Peter King, Gordon Beck, and Tubby Hayes. Tracks include a wonderful take on Mongo Santamaria's "El Pussycat", plus the tunes "Do It The Hard Way", "It Could Happen To You", "C'Est La Vie", "River's Invitation", "Greenback Dollar Bill", and "Keep Your Big Mouth Shut". Disc 1 also features 13 bonus tracks from singles and EPs released in 1967 – and disc 2 is completed by 11 MORE bonus tracks – 6 released for the first time ever, including "Jumpin The Gun", "Respoken", "Fool's Paradise" and "Conquistador". ✨✧ Georgie FameTwo Faces Of Fame/Third Face Of Fame ... CD
CBS/BGO (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
2 classic albums from British vocalist Georgie Fame – back to back on one CD! First up are Two Faces Of Fame – live and studio – as each side of the album was recorded in each mode! Side one features the Brit jazz vocalist swinging in a live set recorded in early 1967 – done with lots of Hammond organ in the lineup, and an overall style that picks up a lot from Ray Charles and Mose Allison, but filters it through the groovier beat group styles of 60s London. Side two is even better, and features Georgie singing in more of a jazz-based mode – with lineups that feature some striking players that include Tony Oxley, Peter King, Gordon Beck, and Tubby Hayes. Third Face Of Fame is an even better album – one that has Fame moving past the swinging Mose Allison-inspired jazz vocal mode of earlier records, into a groovier style that picks up a range of different sounds! Georgie kicks off the album with his version of the ever-popular late 60s "Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde" – and seems to use that tune as an excuse to explore a nice range of older jazz vocal approaches, including one tune that even has him reciting the lyrics in a Beatles-sounding monologue! Arrangements are by Harry South, with players that include Gordon Beck, John McLaughlin, Ronnie Scott, Tony Coe, and Ian Hammer – and titles include "Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde", "Ask Me Nice", "When I'm Sixty Four", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Blue Prelude", "Bullets Laverne", "This Is Always", "Mellow Yellow", and "Side By Side". (Vocalists, Rock) CD

CBS/Victory (Italy), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A sweet little record from this Japanese trio – all instrumental, and put together in a style that blends elements of electro pop, electric fusion, and maybe a bit of sound library funk! The tunes are all pretty vivid – maybe evoking the scene in the title – but they also have elements that tie them more strongly to the emerging electronic groove coming from the Japanese scene at the end of the 70s – almost as if you were stripping away vocals, and coming up with spare tracks that are heavy on keyboards and other eletric touches. Titles are all in Japanese – but translate as "Aegean Fantasy", "Rose Between The Waves", "Image", "Daybreak", "Aphrodite's Mourning", and "Mykonos' Bride". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Van MorrisonTB Sheets ... LP
Bang/CBS, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The early 70s compilation of earlier Van Morrison tracks for Bang Records – often criticized over the years for repackaging earlier material, but to listen to it decades later we just think about how incredible the songs are – looser, longer and soul stirring material from one of popular music's greatest voices. With the exception of the set closing, jukebox classic version of "Brown Eyed Girl", most of the songs are on the longer side, with more shades of soul in the sound thanks to sweet backing vocals by The Sweet Inspirations. Includes "He Ain't Give You None", "Beside You", "It's All Right", "Madame George", "TB Sheets", "Who Drove The Red Sports Car?", "Ro Ro Rosey" and "Brown Eyed Girl" (original hit 45 version). James RoyalCall My Name – Selected Recordings 1964 to 1970 ... CD
CBS/RPM (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
You may not know the name of James Royal, but you'll definitely be calling it out after hearing this sweet little set – a long-overdue collection that finally brings attention to his great British recordings in the 60s! James was one of those excellent UK singers from the 60s who could effortlessly pick up influences from American soul – part of a crowd before the years of bigger singers who'd take the style to a more global audience – and maybe more rooted in the deeper currents of R&B and soul. Yet Royal also gets great help here on many tracks from arranger Keith Mansfield – who you might know from his funky sound library material – and Mansfield brings in a very groovy, very mod approach that really makes things take off – adding sophistication that takes the sound past simple bluesy rock or gritty R&B – with wicked charts that mix strings, funky bits, and other cool touches – really elevating the James Royal sound. Titles include "I Can't Stand It", "A Woman Called Sorrow", "Time Hangs On My Mind", "I've Something Bad On My Mind", "Thru The Love", "Green Days", "Hey Little Boy", "Send Out Love", "Sitting In The Station", "Which Way To Nowhere", "And Soon The Darkness", and "I'm Going Home". SlitsReturn Of The Giant Slits ... LP
CBS (UK), 1981. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
The dramatic return of the Slits – sounding incredible here on this second album! The set's not as rough and ragged as their first effort – but is still also fairly groundbreaking stuff – mixing up dub and post-punk styles with an almost British avant sensibility that has the whole thing coming together beautifully – and with a righteous power that made the trio one of the most important female acts of the postpunk years. The girls' sense of humor and interplay holds all tracks together wonderfully, and the album's filled with enigmatic little tunes that include "Earthbeat", "Or What It Is", "Face Place", "Walk About", "Animal Space/Spacier", "Life On Earth", and "Improperly Dressed". Bruce SpringsteenNebraska ... CD
CBS, 1982. Used ... $2.99
The starkest, sparest ever by Bruce Springsteen – sans accompaniment for the most part, having famously opted to release the haunting guitar, voice and harmonica demos as the actual album – and it's devastatingly strong to this day! The hallmark facet is that it's a largely solo acoustic record, the the great thing about that is how distinctively Springsteen sounding it is – with the all the earnestness of his more anthemic material, and more – just done with a sometimes somber, always intimate approach. One of those records that deserves all of the lofty praise! Includes "Nebraska", "Atlantic City", "Mansion On The Hill", "Johnny 99", "State Trooper", "Used Cars", "Open All Night", "My Father's House" and "Reason To Believe".. CD

The second album from Leonard Cohen – a more stripped down effort produced by Bob Johnston, with some really odd washes of sound on the outer edges of the sound – adding some slightly uneasy atmosphere that's paired masterfully with Cohen's moody pen. An album full of subtle triumphs, with a few of his more iconic songs and certainly in the upper regions of best work. GM/RPM (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
The second and final chapter of work from England's Lesley Duncan – a really great singer/songwriter who opened the doors for many others, but often never fully got her due! The tracks here are after Lesley's bigger years on RCA, and especially CBS – three albums recorded for the GM Recordings label in the mid 70s, plus lots of later bonus tracks too – all showing Duncan still very much at the height of her powers, as a strong interpreter of her own lyrics in ways that are free of commercial modes, nor any of the easily, conventional styles that other female singers were using as the 70s moved on. Arrangements are nicely understated, and two of the three albums feature Chris Spedding on guitar – Peter Frampton is on the third – all strongly presented here with huge notes and photos, and 20 bonus tracks too, including live tracks from a 1974 concert. Titles include "My Soul", "Moon Bathing", "Rocking Chair", "Fine Friends", "Jumped Right In The River", "We'll Get By", "Watch The Tears", "Maybe It's Lost", "The Sky's On Fire", "Love Melts Away", "Walking In The Sea", "Falling Like A Leaf", "Sing Children Sing", "Rainbow Games", "Could've Been A Winner", "Another Light Goes Out", and "Masters Of War". Bob DylanSlow Train Coming ... LP
Columbia, 1979. Very Good+ ... $14.99
The first album in Dylan's so-called "Christian Period", but it's not really the uber-dramatic departure from the "old" Dylan that it was treated as at the time – gospel soul backing vocals and testifying lyricism for sure, but it sounds more like gospel has come to Dylan than it sounds like Dylan has "gone gospel". Slow Train Coming has a focused approach, ala Blood On The Tracks, even if this train doesn't come close to crossing over onto those particular tracks – and the return to a leaner, more focused vibe is welcome one. It's got stellar studio players in the mix, and producer Jerry Wexler's production touches on a soul sound, but smartly hews to Dylan's vocal style and lyrical focus. Dylan's high bar for a masterpiece given his trailblazing past didn't give this record or the following couple much a chance to succeed on their own merits back in the day, but all these years later...wow, this is really good, passionate stuff. Includes "Gotta Serve Somebody", "Precious Angel", "I Believe In You", "Slow Trait", "Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking", "Do Right To Me Baby (Do Unto Others)", "When You Gonna Wake Up", "Man Gave Name To All The Animals", "When He Returns". LP, Vinyl record album

Epic, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $9.99
One of the few American albums ever issued by Georgie Fame – a great set of tracks from his early CBS years, put together with a package that was bound to appeal to US fans digging the Bonnie & Clyde movie! The work here is a hip mix of jazz, soul, and R&B styles – all served up with that Georgie Fame charm that made his music unlike anyone else's at the time. And although we're not sure, it appears that there's a few tracks here that might not have been issued on LP back in the UK – as the set list features 11 tracks that include "Mellow Yellow", "Bullets La Verne", "This Is Always", "Side By Side", "Blue Prelude", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Ask Me Nice", "When I'm Sixty Four", and "The Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde".
