Serge BlennerLa Vogue ... CD
Sky/Bureau B (Germany), 1980. Used ... $11.99
A really cool keyboard set from Serge Blenner – issued during the glory days of the German Sky Records label, but with a vibe that's a bit different than most of their other releases! Blenner works on an assortment of keyboard and electronic sources – but with a sound that's maybe more Sheffield than Hamburg, especially as there's some great use of darkness and distortion in the mix – less clean electronics than some of his Sky contemporaries, which creates a very cool, moody sound throughout! The album has eight instrumental tracks – each a numbered "Phrase" by Serge. CD

ClusterCuriosum ... LP
Sky/Bureau B (Germany), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
One of the last Cluster albums recorded for a long stretch – and a set that maybe makes us wonder what Moebius and Roedelius would have done, had they kept on working in this direction! It's almost as if the groundbreaking duo were listening to the creations of the younger generation that they had influenced – particularly the German new wave rising up around them – and they reach for slightly darker modes here, with some edgier electronics that come off almost in tuneful industrial territory – and we mean that before the "dance" was added to that style a few years later. Tracks include "Oh Odessa", "Proantipro", "Seltsame Gegend", "Helle Melange", "Tristran In Der Bar", "Charlic", and "Ufer". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Der PlanDie Peitsche Des Lebens ... CD
Ata Tak/Bureau B (Germany), 1991. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The last album in the cool classic run of German gems from Der Plan – a group that few folks paid attention to at the time, but who really gave the world some wonderful electronic music in the post-punk years! These guys really distill all the best sides of the German electronic experiments of the 70s – serving things up in shorter tunes that are filled with unusual twists and turns, and which also have plenty of offbeat vocals and a nice sense of humor too – almost like little audio cartoons, with a quality that's far more long-lasting than some of their contemporaries! Despite the 1991 date of the record, the style here is every bit as great as the group's earliest music – and like most of their music, there's hardly any connection to a real epoch in sound – as the whole thing's so darn unique. Titles include "El Cigarro", "Kleiner Junge", "Wir Babies", "Vive Le Vie", "Alter Mann", "Es Werde Licht", and "Spiel 77". CD

✨✧ Der PlanEs Ist Eine Fremde Und Seltsame Welt ... CD
Ata Tak/Bureau B (Germany), 1987. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The title translates to "it's a strange and peculiar world" – and there's maybe no better introduction to the mad electronic music of this wonderful German trio from the 80s! Der Plan were part of that special small slice of the German new wave – groups who didn't rely on darkness or angst to get their message across – but instead mixed together whimsical elements with musical experimentation – often in ways that were years ahead of their time! Imagine Kraftwerk scoring the music for cartoons, and you'd get part of the idea here – but that's hardly the start of the sonic delights within – as the album features short tracks in many different varieties – exploding with innovation at each twist and turn. Titles include "1 Mann 1 Ball", "Bleib Gold", "Kennen Sie Koln", "Frisch Verliebt", "Komm Zurick", "Get Out", and "Ich Hab Den Jordan Gesehn". CD

Der PlanSave Your Software ... CD
Bureau B (Germany), 1989. New Copy ... $16.99
A never-issued album from German electronic geniuses Der Plan – a record that's billed as "autonomous robot product – produced by machine only" – so maybe the group held it back to prevent some sort of a robot uprising! Yet the only uprising the record might have produced would be that of a rave-like party – as the tunes are upbeat, groovy, and filled with all the wit that we always love in the group's work – short, catchy tracks that mix offbeat noises with more tuneful elements – all with vocals that are so heavily processed, they might well come from an old Speak & Spell toy. Titles include "Repair Yourself", "Copy Copy Machine", "Cyberspace", "LPB", "I Want To Sing Like Ella", and "Fanuk Rock". CD

HeldonThird (2LP version – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Bureau B (Germany), 1975. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $30.99
Electronic space rock of the highest pedigree – a brilliant third effort from Richard Pinhas and Heldon, nestled nicely in territory between the Cluter/Eno axis and Metal Machine Music – with perhaps a slightly stronger dose of proggish psych as well! The double-length set is filled with compelling keyboards and wonderfully snakey guitars – almost talking themselves with Frippish tones at times – but much more way out overall, and set loose on these long, extended instrumentals that are totally great! Titles include "ICS Machinique", "Cocaine", "Aurore", "Virgin Swedish Blue", "Ocean Boogi", and "Doctor Bloodmoney". LP, Vinyl record album

Palais SchaumburgPalais Schaumburg (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Mercury/Bureau B (Germany), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99
The first album by Palais Schaumburg – and easily the hardest set the group ever recorded – a really mad batch of rhythms that comes off with raw post punk energy! At some level, the group share a lot with some of their post-prog German contemporaries – some of the noisy elements of Einsturzende Neubauten, the hypnotic grooves of Die Krupps, or the playful electronics of Pyrolator – yet at another level, Palais Schaumburg also remind us a lot of the arty, dubby groups of the UK scene at the time – with the basslines up a fair bit in the mix, and cold-toned lyrics that snap along with the skittish rhythms amidst the occasional flurry of horns – almost in a space between The Slits, Rip Rig & Panic, and the more experimental pre-country years of The Mekons. Great stuff all around – very ripe for rediscovery today – with tracks that include "Die Freunde", "Wir Bauen Eine Neue Stadt", "Gute Luft", "Grunes Winkelkanu", "Morgen Wird Der Wald Gefegt", "Madonna", and "Eine Geschichte". RoedeliusDurch Die Wuste ... CD
Sky/Bureau B (Germany), 1976/1978. Used ... $14.99
Masterful late 70s proggy grooves from Cluster's Hans-Joachim Roedelius – his first solo album, and wonderful, unpredictable journey in changing dynamics! Even the tunes with instrumentation that seems like standard rock materials of guitar, bass, drums and keyboards of wild textures coming from the keys, and echoey bits of sonic errata to give some otherworldly sounds, but have a gritty, grooving bottom end – and other tunes have a sparely haunting sound to them. Just great stuff, certainly necessary for Cluster, but worth the while of anyone with an ear for proggy soundscapes! Players include Jose Christo, Konrad Plank and Moebius. Titles include "Am Rockzipfel", "Dutrch Die Wuste", "Johannelust", "Glaubersalz", "Mr Livingstone I Suppose" and "Regenmacher". CD

RoedeliusSelbstportrait – Wahre Liebe ... CD
Sky/Bureau B (Germany), 2020. Used ... $14.99
A beautiful contemporary album that follows the same spirit of the vintage Selbsportrait records by Roedelius – and one that uses the same sort of vintage instrumentation too – given that the master of spare musical space works here on Fender Rhodes, Farfisa, Roland and Korg keyboards! The songs are wonderful – lyrical in a subtle way, and with maybe a slight bit more variation than some of the Ambient work by Brian Eno – although still that similar balance between silence and sound, which is why Roedelius was such a great partner with Eno on a few projects back in the day. Selections vary in length from 36 seconds to 14 minutes – and titles include "Aus Weilter Ferne", "Nahwarme", "Ebenfalls", "Gerne", "Spiel Im Wind", "Geruhsam", and "Im Kreisel". CD

✨✧ Conrad SchnitzlerCon ... CD
Paragon/Bureau B (Germany), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful early solo work from Conrad Schnitzler – a set that's kind of a distillation of the ideas he brought to Tangerine Dream at the start, but distilled down into much more personal territory, with a very different vibe than the sound of that group at the time! The music is every bit as electronic as you'd expect, but it's often quite poetic too – occasionally with some of the spareness of the Sky Records side of the spectrum – but with maybe more of the darkness and more experimental qualities you'd expect from Schnitzler –almost echoes of the Bowie/Eno instrumental experiments of the period. Titles include "Zug", "Metall I", "Black Nails", "Ballet Statique", and "Electric Garden". CD

Jimi TenorDeep Sound Learning – 1993 to 2000 ... CD
Bureau B (Germany), 1990s. New Copy 2CD ... $20.99
Early work from Jimi Tenor – the Finnish artist you might know for his work in the fields of jazz, soul, and funk in our current century – but who was a very different musician in the years before! Jimi still has a soulful vibe on these early tracks, but the music is much more electric, and focused on rhythms from house and club – kind of a reworking of a Detroit or Chicago mode, but with all these wonderful twists and turns along the way! Jimi once recorded for Warp Records, and you can definitely hear that in some of these tracks – while also noting some echoes of the jazz instrumentation to come. Titles include "Heinola", "Jameson", "Another Space Travel", "Baby It Hearts", "Salo", "Downtown", "Super Beat", "Travelers Cape", "O Sex", and "Plan 9". (New Grooves, Rock) CD

VariousEins Und Zwei Und Drei Und Vier – Deutsche Experimentelle Pop Musik 1980 to 1986 ... CD
Bureau B (Germany), Early 80s. New Copy ... $17.99
Some of the coolest work of the German scene in the 80s – a range of electronic, experimental pop that's very different than both the longer prog recordings of the 70s, and some of the mellower ambient sounds that were also coming out of Germany at the same time! Instead, the cuts here are from the German new wave – a scene that's named similarly to the ones in the US and UK in the early 80s, but which has a vibe that's both darker at times, and more playful too – much more interesting overall, and with results that weren't nearly as well-circulated at the time! Instrumentation is heavy on electronics, but used in ways that are nicely varied, and often mixed with all sorts of other cool sounds too – not nearly as stiff or dark as the cold wave generation, and with results that are full of surprises all the way through! Titles include "Hey Baby Hop" by Der Plan, "Keine Python" by Dunkelziffer, "Sandkorn" by Die Doraus Und Die Marinas, "Muster" by Populare Mechanik, "Hohe Punk Kleiner Mann" by Asmus Tietchens, "Die Farbe War Mod" by Carambolage, "Sample & Hold" by Xao Seffcheque, "Im Zoo" by Pyrolator, "Sentimental" by Traneinvasion, "Erwin Das Tanzende Messer" by Di Zimmermanner, "Austauschprogramm" by Die Partei, and "Sexueller Nostand" by Ostro 430.
