Bob DylanAnother Side of Bob Dylan ... CD
Columbia, 1964. Used ... $3.99
Bob's fourth record, and close runner up to Freewheelin' as the masterpiece of this early stage of his career. While the overly arch Times They Are A Changin' pretty much stood as the cornerstone of classifiable folk rock at the time, Another Side is just that. Dense, elliptical, and downright surreal at times, with some of the protesty stuff that made the media so happy & hungry, but much more layered and poetic. Another side is also much more reverent of and indebted to the Harry Smith field recordings that Bob studied so hard, the stuff that finally caught on with the general public in the early 90s. Titles include "Spanish Harlem Incident", "It Ain't Me Babe", "Ballad In Plain D", "Black Crow Blues", "I Don't Believe You", "Motorpsycho Nitemare", "To Ramona", "Chimes Of Freedom", "My Back Pages", and "I Shall Be Free No 10". ✨✧ Bob DylanBlonde On Blonde ... CD
Columbia, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most incredible rock albums of all time – Dylan's sprawling, shambling, poetic genius at its most revolutionary if you ask us – the landmark Blonde On Blonde! It's got that surrealistic, 4AM and still bursting with creativity kind of feeling that he'd never even try to find again and it's filled with tracks that he comes back to live late in life perhaps more than any other single album. As great as rock music would ever get, this record. Includes "Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35", "Visions Of Johanna", "Pledging My Time", "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again", "Leopard-Skin Pill Box Hat", "Just Like A Woman" and more. CD

Columbia, 2001. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A late triumph for Dylan, and solidly delivering on the promise of his return to excellence on Time Out Of Mind a few years earlier – setting foot into the new millennium by hitting even higher point in a pretty incredible comeback period! Dylan produces himself here, credited as Jack Frost, and he and his road tested band bring the varied rootsy vibe of his latter day sound to the forefront after the moodier, murkier vibe of the previous record. A genuine classic, with songs Dylan kept in his live setlist for many years to come – clearly the man himself is proud of this one, and rightfully so. Titles include "Tweedle Dee & Teedle Dum", "Mississippi", "Summer Days", "High Water (For Charley Patton)", "Honest With Me", "Po'Boy", "Cry A While", "Sugar Baby" and more. CD

Bob DylanRough & Rowdy Ways ... CD
Columbia, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99
The first new Bob Dylan songs in more than a few years – and a great reminder that, even if the man can do a pretty good job with songs from other sources, it's still his core talents as a composer that we love so much! The album's got Bob's wonderfully mature vocals alongside a trio of other guitar talents – Charlie Sexton, Bob Britt, and Donnie Herron – the last of whom plays steel guitar – yet the record's got this kind of intimate vibe, and still crackles with the kind of excitement that we'd feel in the past, when dropping a needle on a new Dylan release – asking the question, "Is this going to be one of the good ones?" – and getting a resounding "Yes!" after just a few minutes. Titles include "I Contain Multitudes", "False Prophet", "Crossing The Rubicon", "Key West", "Black Rider", "Goodbye Jimmy Reed", and "I've Made Up Myself To Give Myself To You" – and the long "Murder Most Foul". Bob DylanSlow Train Coming ... LP
Columbia, 1979. Very Good ... $5.99
The first album in Dylan's so-called "Christian Period", but it's not really the uber-dramatic departure from the "old" Dylan that it was treated as at the time – gospel soul backing vocals and testifying lyricism for sure, but it sounds more like gospel has come to Dylan than it sounds like Dylan has "gone gospel". Slow Train Coming has a focused approach, ala Blood On The Tracks, even if this train doesn't come close to crossing over onto those particular tracks – and the return to a leaner, more focused vibe is welcome one. It's got stellar studio players in the mix, and producer Jerry Wexler's production touches on a soul sound, but smartly hews to Dylan's vocal style and lyrical focus. Dylan's high bar for a masterpiece given his trailblazing past didn't give this record or the following couple much a chance to succeed on their own merits back in the day, but all these years later...wow, this is really good, passionate stuff. Includes "Gotta Serve Somebody", "Precious Angel", "I Believe In You", "Slow Trait", "Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking", "Do Right To Me Baby (Do Unto Others)", "When You Gonna Wake Up", "Man Gave Name To All The Animals", "When He Returns". A critical comeback album for Dylan – who never really went away, he was just floundering a bit commercially and critically for a number of years – one that set him up to ride high again for years to come! This is his second album working with producer Daniel Lanois, who helmed the pretty excellent Oh Mercy a few years earlier. Lanois's trademark haze and mood hover over Dylan and his band's wonderful take on timeless folk-blues-roots rock and some of best, most forthright lyricism since Blood On The Tracks. Wrestling with mortality, Dylan delivers a late career classic. Includes "Love Sick", "Dirt Road Blues", "Standing In The Doorway", "Million Miles", "Trying To Get To Heaven", "Til I Fell In Love With You", "Not Dark Yet", "Cold Irons Bound", "Can't Wait", "Make You Feel My Live" and the seemingly improvised, old school Dylan-styled (if more meandering) "Highlands". Rare and unheard material from Dylan's career redefining Nashville era – his post Blonde On Blonde Nashville era to be more specific – when he recorded the poetic story song masterpiece John Wesley Harding, the charming country folk classic Nashville Skyline, sessions that would end up on Self Portrait, and lots more with Johnny Cash than we'd ever thought would see light of day! Travelin' Thru has more interesting alternate versions and outtakes from John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline than we'd expect given how focused the former and how easygoing the latter are, but what's most revelatory here are the many recordings of Dylan and Cash together – from the Nashville Skyline sessions and for Johnny's Nashville-based television show at the time. ✨✧ Bob Dylan/The BandBasement Tapes ... LP
Columbia, Late 60s/1975. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Dylan & The Band's legendary Basement Tapes – those amazing late 60s Woodstock recordings – and an album that was a classic long before it was officially released in the mid 70s! Bootleg after bootleg of some these recordings might have sold enough copies on the grey market in the early 70s to go platinum back in the day, so there's little wonder that Columbia would finally get some kind of official release out there – and it lives up to the legend! Dylan's conversational, seemingly spontaneous lyricism stretches over a good portion of it, with some much more soulful numbers, too – and those are all the more effective with The Band's incredible instrumentation, backing and occasional lead vocals. Includes "Odds And Ends", "Million Dollar Bash", "Tears Of Rage", "Tiny Montgomery", "Nothing Was Delivered", "Too Much Of Nothing", "Clothes Line Saga", "You Ain't Goin Nowhere", "Open The Door, Homer", "This Wheel's On Fire, "Crash On the Levee (Down In The Flood)", "Long Distance Operator". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original 70s pressing. Cover has clear tape on the top seam, light ring wear, and a trace of a price sticker.)

Ace (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The oft-covered Bob Dylan songbook never sounds so soulful – classic interpretations of Dylan's canon from a great, far reaching roster of black artists – from the the ever-stirring Staple Singers, southern soul heroes Howard Tate and OV Wright, charismatic country soul from Brook Benton, great gender role perspective flipped versions by Nina Simone and Patti LaBelle, a funky tamborine take by Con Funk Shun and much more! It's another excellent entry in the Songwriter Series from Ace Records, extra excellent in that it takes an obvious hero of 60s Songwriter – and actually pulls together songs that'll take you by surprise for their depth – whether you treasure Dylan, deep 60s & 70s solo & group R&B, funk, folk soul...or all of the above! Includes "Blowin In The Wind" by OV Wright, "Girl From The North Country" by Howard Tate, "The Man In Me" by The Persuations, "Lay lady Lay" by The Isley Brothers, "Emotionally Yours" by The O'Jays, "All Along The Watchtower" by Bobby Womack, "Maggie's Farm" by Soloman Burke, "Mr. Tamborine Man" by Con Funk Shun and more. 20 tracks in all. ✨✧ VariousTake What You Need – UK Covers Of Bob Dylan Songs 1964 to 1968 ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The music of Bob Dylan, taken in completely new directions – served up here by a host of 60s British singers who offer up versions of the tunes that are quite different than American covers of the time! There's definitely a fair bit of folk in the mix here, but there's also some freer, trippier styles too – and many of these numbers have very different vocal phrasing than the originals – which keeps the material from being slavish copycat tunes, and instead really shows the way that the influence of Dylan was subtly developed as the 60s moved on, to a point where groups might have drawn a big inspiration from the man's songs, but also then opened the door to lots of new territory. But if you're a fan of Dylan's originals, don't worry – there's also plenty here to love – as the craft of the man himself really shines through, and shows that in the right creative hands, his style was not watered down, but augmented in great ways. As usual with Ace, the package is superb – 22 tracks, complete with detailed notes – on titles that include "Love Minus Zero" by Noel Harrison, "Don't Think Twice It's All Right" by The Fairies, "One Too Many Mornings" by Julie Felix, "Down Along The Cover" by Cliff Aungier, "Tears Of Rage" by Country Fever, "Lay Lady Lay" by Sandie Shaw, "To Ramona" by The Alan Price Set, "Visions Of Johanna" by The Picadilly Line, "Tom Thumb's Blues" by Alex Campbell, "Oxford Town" by Three City Four, "If You Gotta Go Go Now" by Manfred Mann, "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" by The Cops N Robbers, "Absolutely Sweet Marie" by The Factotums, and "I'm A Lonesome Hobo" by Julie Driscoll with Brian Auger & The Trinity. Maybe not the first album from the legendary Band – but a record in which the group get everything completely right all the way through – and sparkle with that special sound that continues to influence generations of music makers, and music lovers! All the great elements the group were bringing to their work with Bob Dylan are in place here – but the focus is completely different, with this warm glow that really fits the vocals of Levon Helm, and a sense of unified vision that makes it really hard to even come up with a match for the energy of the group on this album. The great John Simon adds a few special touches to the overall sound – and titles include "Rockin Chair", "Across The Great Divide", "When You Awake", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Look Out Cleveland", and "King Harvest". ✨✧ CherBackstage/Golden Greats ... CD
Imperial/BGO (UK), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two 1968 albums by Cher – back to back on a single CD! First up is Backstage – a great little solo album from Cher – recorded during her overlooked run of non-Sonny Bono material for Imperial Records in the late 60s – a sublime stretch that really opens up her vocals with a surprisingly soulful vibe! That's definitely the case here, as Harold Battiste is helping Sonny out on production – adding some nicely deep currents to the music, as Cher takes on tunes by Bob Dylan, Miriam Makeba, Tim Hardin, and a surprisingly diverse array of artists – transforming every song in the process, and really making the music her own! Titles include a great sitar-laden version of "Masters Of War", plus "The Click Song", "Reason To Believe", "Do You Believe In Magic", "Take Me For A Little While", "A House Is Not A Home", and "Song Called Children". Golden Greats features loads of solo material that Cher recorded for Imperial Records without Sonny Bono on vocals – working alone, because the duo were contracted as a pair to Atlantic at the time! Sonny's still got a great hand in the music, though – producing most of it, and contributing a fair bit of original songs, next to material that Cher takes on from others, and really makes her own. Titles include "Hey Joe", "Alfie", "Sunny", "All I Really Want To Do", "I Feel Something In The Air", "You Better Sit Down Kids", "Come & Stay With Me", and the mega-hit "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)". ✨✧ Steve GoodmanSteve Goodman – Live 69 ... CD
Omnivore, 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really unusual slice of work from the great singer/songwriter Steve Goodman – first, in that the unissued material predates all of his famous later recordings – and second, in that Steve performs a set that features all material by other artists! All the Steve Goodman charm and earnestness is still very much in place here – and it's interesting to hear him take on songs by Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard, Tom Paxton, Willie Dixon, and others – all done in a very personal, up-close kind of way! Goodman sings and plays guitar on all numbers, and gets a bit of accompaniment on bass and violin – but still keeping things very spare overall. The set was recorded in Chicago, right before Goodman broke big – and titles include "Mama Tried", "Truck Drivin Man", "You Can't Judge A Book By Its Cover", "Ballad Of Spiro Agnew", "Wonderful World Of Sex", and "The Auctioneer". Transatlantic/Superior Viaduct, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Continuing genius from the great Bert Jansch – the singer/songwriter's second album, and one of his most sublime records ever! The album's got an up-close, personal vibe – mostly just Bert's vocals and acoustic guitar, a bit like the earliest albums by Bob Dylan – and like Dylan, Jansch has this approach that's completely his own – very much schooled in older 20th century traditions, but focused on finding a new way forward – with a mix of melodic and harmonic elements that flow from his guitar with effortless ease, and are matched by some beautifully pointed vocals by a singer who sounds unlike anyone else. At times, the tunes have a quality that's almost hypnotic – a bit of a John Fahey vibe in the progressions, but a bit warmer – and titles include "Tinker's Blues", "It Don't Bother Me", "Harvest Your Thoughts Of Love", "Lucky Thirteen", "As The Day Grows Longer Now", "So Long", "900 Miles", and "Ring A Ding Blues". ✨✧ Polly NilesSunshine In My Rainy Day Mind (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ember/Grapefruit (UK), 1970. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
An unreleased album from singer Polly Niles – a unique talent with a style that fits in strongly with some of the rising tide of female vocalists rising up at the start of the 70s – an elite group that might include Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, and Carole King! Polly's much more obscure than both, of course, but has similar roots – an American singer with experience in folk music, turning towards different modes at the end of the 60s – recording here for the British Ember label, who did a really great job with production, but then never managed to get the record past test pressing stage! Niles has a voice that contains all the earnestness of a folk singer, but none of the more cloying qualities – more mature, and nicely tuned through a range of material from Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, John Barry, Stephen Stills, and even the team of Goffin and King. Titles include "Bang Bang", "Since I Lost You Baby", "The Milk Of The Tree", "Get High On Jesus", "I Am A Child", and "East Virginia". 2CD set also features an insane number of bonus tracks – session tracks and single mixes, with 24 more titles in all – plus very detailed notes on Polly's special story. Tim RoseTim Rose ... LP
Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A fantastic solo debut from Tim Rose – issued by Columbia Records at a time when the label was taking a strong stand with singer/songwriting giants like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen! Rose might not be totally in the territory of those legends, but steps out from previous folk work (including a group with Mama Cass and Jake Holmes!), into a mode that's trying to carve out a more thoughtful space for a male singer in the late 60s. Rose has a full voice that's clearly influenced by soul, yet has this raspy, almost boozy charm around the edges – almost crackling at times, which only adds to the spirit of the songs – which get great small group accompaniment from a studio combo that features Bernard Purdie on drums and Artie Butler on piano. Titles include "Where Was I", "You're Slipping Away From Me", "Got A Loneliness", "I'm Gonna Be Strong", "I Gotta Do Things My Way", and a version of "Hey Joe". LP, Vinyl record album

Arrangements are by Rose and Ian Freebairn-Smith – and there's a great drummer at the core of the sound, who kicks things with rhythmic currents that hint at funk – and which provide a crisp crackle to the music that matches Tim's energy in the lead! The vibe here is similar to Tinderbox – surprisingly catchy at times, yet still with that balanced sense of drama that Siouxie could bring to her music – on tunes that include their hit remake of "The Passenger", plus "This Wheel's On Fire", "Strange Fruit", "Sea Breezes", "Little Johnny Jewel", "Hall Of Mirrors", and "Trust In Me". The one-and-only album by San Francisco singer-songwriter Dino Valente – an enigmatic cat best known for penning the hippie anthem "Get Together" – and a much deeper and more adventurous writer then you'd know from that one ubiquitous song! Dino bridged the coffee shop folk scene with sprawling psychedelia on this album. He has the Tim Buckley kind of stream-of-conciousness restlessness, and the record's full of lovely acoustic guitar accompanied by unlikely horn and flute flourishes. Dino was hardly a conventional singer – so the production hand of Bob Dylan knob twirler Bob Johnston couldn't be a better fit.
