Country Joe & The FishElectric Music For The Mind & Body ... LP
Vanguard, 1967. Very Good ... $9.99
A seminal set from Country Joe & The Fish – one of those albums that brought the new psychedelic sound strongly into the mainstream – but all without softening up or commercializing it at all! There's still a very sharp edge to the record – mean organ lines, fuzzy guitar, and lots of cool production that makes the sounds weirder and more watery than before – even the vocals, which have this edge that nobody would ever refer to as Sunshine Pop! In a way, the whole set's as sinister as any of the most groundbreaking albums on Elektra from the time – and definitely shows that both Vanguard and the group were at the forefront of the new psych recording scene. Titles include "Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine", "Super Bird", "Death Sound", "Sad And Lonely Times", "The Masked Marauder", "Grace", and "Bass Strings". LP, Vinyl record album

Groovy, BABY! Bob Crewe's swingin' follow-up to his Music to Watch Girls By, given a slightly Brit easy twist with cuts like "Birds of Britain", and "Chelsea Girls". Very groovy, with a swingin London sound. As the lyrics to "Birds" go, "Chasin after chicks is kicks, but when I spend my time in England, here's the word: I want a bird!". New York Rock & Roll EnsembleReflections – Music Composed By Manos Hadjidakis ... LP
Atco, 1970. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Quite possibly the most interesting album ever from the New York Rock & Roll Ensemble – a set done in close collaboration with Greek soundtrack maestro Manos Hadjidakis! The tunes are all penned by Hadjidakis, and they're performed by the group in an ambitious mode that has more than a few echoes of their Balkan heritage – bits of oboe, cello, and guitar used in ways that have a distinctly Greek-sounding flavor – supported by more conventional rock-styled rhythms that still manage to have a quality that's a bit more majestic than just regular small group rocking! Vocals are all in English, penned by members of the band on top of Hadjidakis' compositions – and the album's a great crossroads between 60s psyche and soundtrack genres. Titles include "Dedication", "The Day", "Love Her", "Dance Of The Dogs", "Kemal", "Orpheus", "Noble Dame", and "Better Way". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Roxy MusicManifesto ... LP
Atco, 1979. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A brilliant little comeback album for Roxy Music – their first album in 4 years after Siren, and a well-done departure that takes off from older records without losing any of their greatness! In a way, the set's almost the group's Lodger – a similar effort to Bowie's record from the same time that reflects a move away from heavier styles of earlier years, but never loses the edge of the group's best work. Manifesto also reflects some of the lessons learned by Bryan Ferry on his solo records – a bit leaner and cleaner presentation of the songs – but the album itself is also strongly a group production effort, and certainly feels that way in its use of Phil Manzenera's great guitars and Andy Mackay's horn arrangements. Titles include "Ain't That So", "Stranger Through The Years", "Trash", "Manifesto", "Angel Eyes", "Spin Me Round", "Cry Cry Cry", and "My Little Girl". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Roxy MusicRoxy Music ... LP
Atco, 1972. Very Good+ ... $39.99
A mindblowing debut from Roxy Music – a record that took the world by storm in the 70s, and which is still pretty darn revolutionary all these many years later! Sure, the cover looks a bit cheesy and trashy, but the core of the music is amazing – this blistering array of guitars, electronics, and saxophone – all honed into songs that provide the perfect setting for the haunting vocals of Bryan Ferry! If you only know these guys from their later, softer work, you'll be quite surprised here – as the saxes by Andy Mackay are woven right in alongside the guitar of Phil Manzanera, and the album's laced with weird electronic and tape touches from Brian Eno. Peter Sinfield produced – as yet another mighty talent that was part of the proceedings – and titles include "Re-make/Re-Model", "Ladytron", "If There Is Something", "HB", "The Bob", "Chance Meeting", "Would You Believe", "Sea Breezes", and "Bitters End". Davie Allan & The Arrows/The Hands Of TimeWild Angels – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Tower, Late 60s. Very Good- ... $1.99
Classic kitschy biker material from Davie Allan and The Arrows – one of the best-ever groups to play on schlocky soundtracks during the 60s! There's lots of guitar and lots of fuzz – and guessing from the photos of the movie, the music was the best thing about it! Toddler Mike Curb put the whole thing together – but the vibe is much more like some of Allan's excellent guitar instrumental albums of the time – apart from the few more standard rock band tracks you'd find in Curb's other productions from the period. Most of the album's instrumental Arrows work – and tracks include "The Chase", "Bongo Party", "Blues Theme", "Theme From Wild Angels", and "The Unknown Rider" – plus the vocal cuts "Theme From The Wild Angels" by The Visitors and "Midnight Rider" by The Hands Of Time. Amon Duul IIMade In Germany ... LP
Atco, 1975. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A big international record from Amon Duul – and for good reason, too – as the set's filled with catchy little tracks that have this really cool blend of prog and glam! The style's almost like Roxy Music at points – with the vocals all compressed in the guitars, and this sinister vibe in the instrumentation – played by a group who clearly know how to stretch out more, but instead pack a lot of experimentation into shorter, groovier space. The vocals are in English, but accented – which gives them a further offbeat vibe – and titles include "The King's Chocolate Waltz", "Emigrant Son", "La Krautoma", "Metropolis", "Gala Gnome", and "Mr Kraut's Jinx". Joan ArmatradingWhatever's For Us ... LP
Cube (UK), 1972. Near Mint- ... $3.99
The landmark first album from Joan Armatrading – a singer who's almost a genre unto herself! The album's awash with Joan's early collaborations with songwriter Pam Nestor – pairing hear with Armatrading at a level that's almost like that of Bernie Taupin and Elton John during the same stretch – and often with a similar blend of rootsy elements and more contemporary expression in the music. Instrumentation is very spare – mostly just guitar, bass, and drums – with Joan on both piano and acoustic guitar – and titles include "My Family", "Visionary Mountains", "It Could Have Been Better", "Alice", "All The King's Gardens", and "City Girl". Ars NovaSunshine & Shadows ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good ... $11.99
The second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Valiant, 1966. Near Mint- ... $5.99
An aptly-titled album, as it sprung the genius of The Association fully onto the world – and forever changed the rules for dreamy vocal pop music! The album's a wonderful blend of sweet harmonies, LA production, and the kind of slightly-trippy song stylings you already know from The Association's biggest hits. However, the album's also filled with great little songs that you probably haven't heard before – which makes it an even bigger treat, kind of like stumbling upon a treasure box of unheard musical gems that you've been looking for your entire life! Titles include "Songs In The Wind", "Memories Of You", "No Fair At All", "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies", and "Another Time Another Place". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Association/Charles FoxGoodbye Columbus – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Warner, 1969. Very Good+ ... $1.99
A groovy groovy soundtrack that contains one of the Association's greatest songs! "Goodbye Columbus" may not be as famous as some of their bigger hits – but we love it to death, and it's the kind of catchy groover they'll find us singing in the coffin long after we've passed away! The soundtrack features the vocal version of the track – as well as some other vocal numbers like "It's Gotta Be Real" and "So Kind To Me". Plus, the soundtrack's also got some excellent instrumental numbers that are in the best spirit of the group's music – with loads of dreamy arrangements and light lilting pop melodies. Tunes include "Love Has A Way", "A Moment To Share", "A Time For Love", and "How Will I Know You?". LP, Vinyl record album

BadfingerWish You Were Here ... LP
Warner, 1974. Near Mint- ... $99.99
The kind of overlooked, understated gem that should have put Badfinger at the top of the charts in the mid 70s – a record of impeccable songwriting, really great production, and a refinement of an earlier musical ideal that really points the way forward – all while avoiding most of the pitfalls of some of the group's UK contemporaries! There's a quality here that almost reminds us of the more straightforward elements of Wings, but with a rootsy vibe too – almost a bit like Little Feat, but definitely British in terms of the way the vocals come across. The album's overflowing with hooks, and the kinds of songs that should have been huge – and maybe that's what makes it such a treat all these many years later. Titles include "Just A Chance", "Got To Get Out Of Here", "Dennis", "No One Knows", "In The Meantime/Some Other Time", "King Of The Load", "Love Time", and "Meanwhile Back At The Ranch/Should I Smoke". Apple, 1969. Very Good+ ... $29.99
Pure brilliance from start to finish – especially the second side of the record, which has a continuous run of tunes that's very unique – and still completely sublime all these many years later! The album shows the fracturing ideas of the group, but crafted together with a unity you won't find on The White Album or Let It Be – still a way of making it all gel together beautifully, as the fab four stretch their wings to find new ways of being. Added instrumentation is used wonderfully – never overdone, but with orchestral passages that can really hammer home the best musical moments – and titles include "I Want You", "Because", "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Golden Slumbers", "The End", "Her Majesty", "Polythene Pam", and "Sun King". Huge, dark, and heavy – an album of mythical proportions, and that's a lot to say for a mainstream album – especially one that crossed over as big as this one! It would be hard to imagine the modern rock landscape without this album or group, who provided the template for so much music to follow – and the soundtrack to many bong-fueled excursions to the dark side – a huge legacy in sound, but one that may well still be best begun on this landmark self-titled album! Titles include "Black Sabbath", "The Wizard", "Behind The Wall Of Sleep", "NIB", "Wicked World", and "Warning". LP, Vinyl record album

Bonzo Dog Doo Dah BandGorilla ... LP
Imperial, 1967. Near Mint- ... $11.99
The insane debut of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band – an amazing late 60s Brit ensemble who were almost to music what Monty Python were to TV! This first effort by the group is a mad array of sounds and styles that come together with a great sense of play and joy – a real delight in quick turns, witty phrases, and parodic re-castings of earlier modes – inspired by dada work of the early 20th century, but also handled with a lot more of a post-modern feel overall. Most tracks are short, and many echo earlier music styles, filtered through a slightly psyche filter – and titles include "Death Cab For Cutie", "In San Francisco", "Jollity Farm", "Equestrian Statue", "Cool Brittania", "I'm Bored", "Piggy Bank Love", "Big Shot", "Mickey's Son & Daughter", and "The Sound Of Music". Bow Wow WowSee Jungle! See Jungle! Go Join Your Gang Yeah! City All Over, Go Ape Crazy ... LP
RCA, 1981. Very Good+ ... $7.99
"I'm a rock n' roll puppet, in a band called Bow Wow Wow." What a weird, defiantly appealing moment in pop music it was when Malcolm McClaren assembled members of The Ants and 15-year-old Annabella Lwin – who then paired bratty lyrics with African-inspired drums & rhythms. What should have been an affront to good taste (you can legitimately argue that it it was) just sounds like a bunch of thumping, boisterous fun to us. Titles include "Jungle Boy", "King Kong", "Chihuahua", "Go Wild In The Country", "Why Are Babies So Wise?", "Orang-Outang", "Hello, Hello Daddy (I'll Sacrifice You)" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tim BuckleyLook At The Fool ... LP
DiscReet, 1973. Near Mint- ... $16.99
The last album that Tim Buckley ever gave the world – and a great leaping-off point for speculation about what he might have done, had he not left the planet too soon! Tim's actually beginning to explore a bit of funk in his music here – still using that amazing voice with all of its range from the early Elektra years – but often set to backings that feature heavy drums from Earl Palmer, tight bass from Chuck Rainey, and keyboards from Mike Melvoin – all cats who can be tight, but never slick – and whose groove is more than loose enough to let Buckley direct the whole proceedings. Given that Tim has an occasional raw rasp, and a very offbeat way with his lyrics, the mix of elements is actually not that far from the funk of Betty Davis on her first two albums – with a similar shrug towards any easy genre categorizations. Titles include "Freeway Blues", "Look At The Fool", "Tijuana Moon", "Mexicali Voodoo", "Down In The Street", "Wanda Lou", and "Bring It On Up". LP, Vinyl record album

Eric Burdon & The AnimalsEvery One Of Us ... LP
MGM, 1968. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Another gem from The Animals' overlooked late 60s years on MGM – a time when the group were easily making some of the most inventive music on the label! The styles here are even wider than before – definitely an attempt to showcase "every one of us" that made up the group – in a blend of spacey sounds, gentle folksy moments, and some of the rougher tones of previous MGM records. Many titles were written only by Burdon – a bit of a change from before – and showcase an increased use of acoustic guitar alongside his bleak vocals. Titles include "The Immigrant Lad", "Year Of The Guru", "Serenade To A Sweet Lady", "White Houses", "New York 1963/America 1968", and "Uppers & Downers". CD features a bonus single version of "White Houses". LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Byrd & The Field HippiesAmerican Metaphysical Circus ... LP
Columbia, 1969. Sealed ... $29.99
An amazing little record from Joe Byrd – an artist with roots in serious music, but who's serving things up here with a wild hippie aesthetic that makes the whole thing come across more like a "happening" than the usual sort of studio album – but in ways that also echo an earlier generation of Americanist composition too. The process of the record mimics some of Byrd's famous work in New York – and has a very collaborative feel overall, with elements of electronics, acoustics, and vocals coming together beautifully! There's some great tabla, harpsichord, moog, and organ on the record – plus more serious woodwinds and brass – and vocals from Victoria Bond, Susan De Lange, Christie Thompson, and Ernie Anderson – plus Joe himself. Titles include "Kalyani", "Moonsong Pelog", "You Can't Ever Come Down", "Gospel Music", "Nightmare Train", "Leisure World", and "The Elephant At The Door". LP, Vinyl record album

Jubilee, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A split album of work from doo wop legends The Cadillacs & The Orioles – featuring about a side apiece of music by each group, pulled mostly from singles for the Jubilee label! The Cadillacs are represented here by their highly frenetic approach to vocals – a style that made them almost an east coast version of The Coasters – while the Orioles have that warmer, rounded style that made them one of the key groups in the transition from older harmony to doo wop in the 50s. Cadillacs tunes include "Let Me Down Easy", "It's Love", "C'Mon Home Baby", "Lucy", "and "Buzz Buzz Buzz". Orioles tracks include "Baby Please Don't Go", "Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me", "A Kiss & A Rose", and "You Belong To Me". (Soul, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Keep in mind that The Clash were waging war in the Mideast years before Desert Storm – in this searing mix of London punk, rocksteady roots, and slight new wave elements – delivered here with a surprising sense of self that really gave the whole thing a sense of wit – and more than enough legs to keep on going without collapsing under the passage of time! Jessi ColterCountry Star Is Born ... LP
RCA, 1970. Near Mint- ... $19.99
The fantastic debut of Jessi Colter – done at a time when the lady had already hitched up with Waylon Jennings at a personal level, and was also sharing some of his nascent outlaw qualities in her music! In fact, we might make an argument that this album predates some of Jennings' bigger outlaw moments – and also has a similar sort of quality in the early years – with qualities in Colter's voice that are very different than the Nashville mainstream, almost as if she's equally aware of phrasing from female folk singers – set to a very hip batch of tunes from Colter herself (as Miriam Eddy), Harlan Howard, Willie Nelson, and Mickey Newbury. The set includes a duet with Waylon Jennings on "I Ain't The One" – and other titles include "It's Not Easy", "He Called Me Baby", "Too Many Rivers", "Cry Softly", and "If She's Where You Like Livin".
