Bonniwell Music MachineBonniwell Music Machine (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Real Gone, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 24.99
An amazing second chapter for The Music Machine – working here with the last name of leader Sean Bonniwell in their name – in a groove that's even weirder and wilder than before! The group take on an odd new sound here – still the heady brew of fuzz and Hammond on their original garagey recordings from LA – but with a mode that also really lets Bonniwell's offbeat character come to the forefront – both in the odd lyrics, and his stark presentation in the lead – a Sunset Strip sense of personality that's almost up there with Kim Fowley at times! The record's definitely one of the weirder, more edgey sides cut for Warner Brothers in the mid 60s – and titles include "Astrologically Incompatible", "Double Yellow Line", "The Trap", "Soul Love", "Bottom Of The Soul", "Me Myself & I", and "The Eagle Never Hunts The Fly". ✨✧ Roxy MusicManifesto ... LP
Atco, 1979. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A brilliant little comeback album for Roxy Music – their first album in 4 years after Siren, and a well-done departure that takes off from older records without losing any of their greatness! In a way, the set's almost the group's Lodger – a similar effort to Bowie's record from the same time that reflects a move away from heavier styles of earlier years, but never loses the edge of the group's best work. Manifesto also reflects some of the lessons learned by Bryan Ferry on his solo records – a bit leaner and cleaner presentation of the songs – but the album itself is also strongly a group production effort, and certainly feels that way in its use of Phil Manzenera's great guitars and Andy Mackay's horn arrangements. Titles include "Ain't That So", "Stranger Through The Years", "Trash", "Manifesto", "Angel Eyes", "Spin Me Round", "Cry Cry Cry", and "My Little Girl". LP, Vinyl record album

A mindblowing debut from Roxy Music – a record that took the world by storm in the 70s, and which is still pretty darn revolutionary all these many years later! Sure, the cover looks a bit cheesy and trashy, but the core of the music is amazing – this blistering array of guitars, electronics, and saxophone – all honed into songs that provide the perfect setting for the haunting vocals of Bryan Ferry! If you only know these guys from their later, softer work, you'll be quite surprised here – as the saxes by Andy Mackay are woven right in alongside the guitar of Phil Manzanera, and the album's laced with weird electronic and tape touches from Brian Eno. Peter Sinfield produced – as yet another mighty talent that was part of the proceedings – and titles include "Re-make/Re-Model", "Ladytron", "If There Is Something", "HB", "The Bob", "Chance Meeting", "Would You Believe", "Sea Breezes", and "Bitters End". Studio Mule (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $19.99
A set that's hardly background at all – as the tracks here have a lively, forward sort of energy that reminds us of our favorite post-punk experiments from the British and German scenes at the start of the 70s – done with a darkness that really resonates with the album's cover image too! There's hardly any vocals at all on the songs – other than muted, abstracted lyrics that are buried under brooding basslines, echoey drums, and fuzzy work on guitar and keyboards – all with a moody Factory Records sort of vibe – and by that, we mean Factory circa 1980, not the later sunnier years. Brian BriggsSelected Music From The Album Brain Damage ... 12-inch
Bearsville, 1980. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $9.99
A great lost record of minimalist club – a set that we'd rank right up there with classics by Arthur Russell, Liquid Liquid, or some of the other most creative talents on the New York scene at the start of the 80s! As with work by those other two artists, there's an experimental approach here, but one that's very very groovy – mostly just spare beats, loose instrumentation, and other sounds – woven together in ways that certainly have strong post-punk inspiration, but which can also work perfectly on a dancefloor too! This is the kind of work that would be equally at home in the clubs and in a punk club too – the crossover you'd experience at the legendary Danceteria – and titles include "AEO (parts 1 & 2)", "Psyclone", "Nervous Breakdown", and "Spy Vs Spy". Country Joe & The FishElectric Music For The Mind & Body ... LP
Vanguard, 1967. Very Good ... $9.99
A seminal set from Country Joe & The Fish – one of those albums that brought the new psychedelic sound strongly into the mainstream – but all without softening up or commercializing it at all! There's still a very sharp edge to the record – mean organ lines, fuzzy guitar, and lots of cool production that makes the sounds weirder and more watery than before – even the vocals, which have this edge that nobody would ever refer to as Sunshine Pop! In a way, the whole set's as sinister as any of the most groundbreaking albums on Elektra from the time – and definitely shows that both Vanguard and the group were at the forefront of the new psych recording scene. Enigmatic sounds from UK reedman Lol Coxhill – a really cool collaboration with Morgan Fisher – who adds in his own tape manipulation, guitar, and piano next to Coxhill's work on soprano sax – plus a bit of carillion too! The style's even more spacey and laidback than Lol's 70s duets with Steven Miller – but has a similarly hypnotic quality – proof that Coxhill was always trying to go way beyond jazz, and way beyond some of the standard free modes of his contemporaries – always interested in shaping sounds to new ends – with fascinating results that make the album a corker! William EatonMusic By William Eaton ... LP
Morning Trip (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... About March 1, 2020 (delayed)
Beautifully mellow sounds from William Eaton – a 70s hippie-esque figure who wandered the desert in Arizona, and had a great talent for building his own stringed instruments! Here, William's working on an assortment of self-created guitars – one with 6 strings, one with 12, and one with a whopping 26 strings – dubbed an "elesion harmoniom", and sounding a lot more like a harp than anything else! The style of these tunes is spare and often spacey – played with sounds of nature in mind, often in ways that flow out in the breeze, and come back with a slight little echo. The home made ("private press", if you will) nature of the original album is expanded nicely here with additional notes and photos – and the CD features a total of 18 tracks in all. Brian EnoAmbient 1 – Music For Airports (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EG/Astralwerks, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A landmark moment – both for Brian Eno, and for experimental music in general! Although Eno began his solo run with some searing, guitar-heavy records that were even wilder than his early work with Roxy Music – he also began experimenting with more sensitive aspects of sound on albums like Another Green World and Before & After Science – an approach he takes here to the farthest degree, by opening up himself and creating a whole new genre of ambient music in the process! Gone are the raspy, sometimes nasty vocals – and in their place is virtually nothing – just beautifully open music that uses scores that are somewhat cyclical – but at a pace that's very different than the minimalism of the period – and maybe even more minimal too. The record features four long tracks, one with piano by Robert Wyatt – really beautiful stuff, like some strange dark sonic crystal that fell out of the skies years ago, and which still remains a mystery to all ears that stumble upon it! EG/Astralwerks, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 24.99
A compilation LP of sorts – though at the time of its release most of this material had not been heard in this form! The album's more or less part of the "Ambient" series Eno had started that year with Music For Airports – and it's presented with similarly simple, elegant packaging – a cool divergence from the more striking Eno of a few years before. The set is made up of various bits, record either exclusively for film use, or that in one way or another found their way into films – and contains mostly short tunes, some thematic, others purely sonic wallpaper, but always compelling! 18 tracks, including "M386", "Aragon", "Two Rapid Formations", "Slow Water", "Sparrowfall", "Evenings In Dense Fog", "A Measured Room", "Strange Light", and "Final Sunset". This set is beautifully spare and meditative – two side-long tracks, each a kind of warmer, more sentimental take on territory that Brian Eno was exploring with his ambient music projects – inflected maybe with a slightly spiritual vibe, as you'd guess from the title! Instrumentation is mostly electric, but used in ways that also really show the manner in which these early American pioneers of the format were marking their own space away from German electronic experimentation. Bizarre home made electronics from the enigmatic Iasos – an artist who later went onto a bit of fame in the new age, but who's working here in a trippier, spacier, almost psychedelic mode! The style is often quite personal, and almost naive – as Iasos works on guitar, keyboards, amplified flute, and other odd tape and studio effects – all flowing out with a style that's often a bit cosmic, and which could work well as some of the shorter link tracks on an early 70s Impulse album. Joe Meek/Pierre Boulez/Luc FerrariI Hear A New World – The Pioneers Of Electronic Music (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A really cool little package – one that brings space age sounds from both the world of mainstream pop, and the farther reaches of electronic music composition in the postwar years! The core of CD1 is the groundbreaking album I Hear A New World by Joe Meek – presented here both in the "restored" version that was first issued by RPM in 1991, and the original unreleased tapes from 1960. The whole record is like The Ventures meeting space aliens – and Joe Meek composed and conceived the incredible 60s session of strange space-age instrumentals – one that mixes instrumental surf-flavored guitars with crazy sound effects and production techniques, for an out-of-this-world batch of tracks that's like nothing else we can think of! Tracks include "Glob Waterfall", "I Hear A New World", "Orbit Around The Moon", "March Of The Dribcots", and "Valley Of The Saroos". CD1 also features 11 more weird electronic tracks from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop – and from Ray Cathode. Then CD2 and CD3 move into the darker corners of experimental electronics and musique concrete – with works that include "Dripsody" by Hugh Le Caine, "Syncopation" by Tom Dissevelt, "Timbres Durees" by Olivier Messiaen, "Poeme Electronique" by Edgard Varese, "The Innocents" by Daphne Oram, "Fontana Mix" by John Cage, "Visage V (parts 1, 2, & 3)" by Luc Ferrari, "Musica Su Due Dimensioni" by Bruno Maderna, "Deux Etudes De Musique Concrete For Magnetic Tape" by Pierre Boulez, "Fantasy In Space" by Otto Luening, and "Piece For Tape Recorder" by Vladimir Ussachevsky. New York Rock & Roll EnsembleReflections – Music Composed By Manos Hadjidakis ... LP
Atco, 1970. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Quite possibly the most interesting album ever from the New York Rock & Roll Ensemble – a set done in close collaboration with Greek soundtrack maestro Manos Hadjidakis! The tunes are all penned by Hadjidakis, and they're performed by the group in an ambitious mode that has more than a few echoes of their Balkan heritage – bits of oboe, cello, and guitar used in ways that have a distinctly Greek-sounding flavor – supported by more conventional rock-styled rhythms that still manage to have a quality that's a bit more majestic than just regular small group rocking! Vocals are all in English, penned by members of the band on top of Hadjidakis' compositions – and the album's a great crossroads between 60s psyche and soundtrack genres. Titles include "Dedication", "The Day", "Love Her", "Dance Of The Dogs", "Kemal", "Orpheus", "Noble Dame", and "Better Way". LP, Vinyl record album

The spot is a special blend of art and commerce – and the music by Ojima shifts between the sorts of sounds you might hear in an installation, and work that's similar to some of the environmental music of his contemporaries – all delivered with spare electronics and a minimalist mode that really shows the fantastic direction some of these Japanese composers were taking after the initial Brian Eno experiments with ambient music, particularly Music For Airports. Funky breaks and fuzzy guitars – one of the most amazing albums to come out of the Turkish scene of the 70s – and one with a sound that really defies categorization! Although the sweet image of a girl and guitar on the cover might make you think the record's a folk set, the overall production is heavily electric – filled with fuzzed-up touches on the guitars, and usually supported by some funky drumming that gives most of the record a cool Eastern break sort of feel! Lyrics aren't in English, but they're oddly compelling even if you don't know what they mean – as Selda's voice has a weird other-wordly quality, and comes off with the same tripped-out qualities as the music! Titles include "Ince Ince", "Nasirli Eller", "Mehmet Emmi", "Dost Uyan", "Gitme", "Kizil Dere", "Yaz Gazeteci Yaz", and "Meydan Sizindir". Laid BackLaid Back (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Brother Music (Denmark), 1981. New Copy ... $9.99
The first album from Laid Back – the Danish duo who would soon dominate the world of breakdance with their electro-pop groove! This set has Laid Back sounding maybe a bit more rock at the core, but still with plenty of electronic touches around the edge – maybe a catchier version of DAF in the mid 80s, or a group that's traveling in the same pop territory as Peter Schilling or Nena – right down to their use of English language lyrics in the set! Those lyrics often have a nice accent, though – which also keeps things interesting – on titles that include "Maybe I'm Crazy", "China Girl", "Keep On Moving", "Take Me Home", "Roger", "Night Train Boogie", and "Man From The Moon". CD features a number of bonus tracks from singles – including "Walk On", "New Feeling", and some other mixes too. (Soul, Rock) CD

A BolhaUm Passo A Frente (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Continental/Lion, 1973. Used ... $14.99
Massively heavy sounds from A Bolha – a Brazilian group who were previously known as The Bubbles, and backed up Gal Costa during the Tropicalia years – but who work here in a fuzzy, bassy groove that's totally great – definitely an heir to the headier sounds of the UK scene at the start of the 70s! The guitars are definitely in full force here, but the basslines drive things along strongly too – echoing some of the Peruvian sounds of the time, but with a bit more Brazilian sophistication – and definitely a musical echo of lessons learned during Tropicalia, even though the set's a fully instrumental one. Organ also figures in the mix too – and titles include "Bye My Friend", "Razao De Existir", "Um Passo A Frente", "A Esfera", and "Neste Rock Forever". CD is beautifully done – with full notes in the great Lion tradition – and bonus tracks that include "Sem Nada" and "18.30 Parte 1". CD

International Anthem, 2015. New Copy ... $5.99 11.99
Mighty nice work from a really inventive duo – the team of Ryan Oslance on drums and Shane Parish on guitar – both musicians who work with a criss-crossing sound that's part jazz, flavored maybe partly by rock – in a blend that really continues the legacy of some important Chicago sounds of the final years of the 20th Century! There's a wide array of textures from the guitar – sometimes more pronounced leads, sometimes subtle sonic energy, and sometimes rhythmic blasts that really echo the work on drums – which also has a way of stepping between conventional and more unusual modes, as both musicians progress in styles that often have a relatively rhythmic core. Titles include "Power With", "Erosion", "Sundowning", "Rincon Pio Sound", "La Faena", and "Shelter In Place" – a tune that maybe resonates more differently now than when it was recorded! Crammed (Belgium), 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $22.99 26.99
A great contemporary entry in the mindblowing musical legacy of Aksak Maboul – a group who first started mixing up many different genres in the late 70s, then went on to maybe set the tone for the whole creative legacy of the Crammed Discs label! Original member Marc Hollander is still at the core – handling keyboards, reed instruments, percussion, and all sorts of sonic elements – mixing them with that creative musicality that always made his vision so unique. And singer Veronique Vincent is at the forefront of the group now, after a few previous collaborations – heading things up by co-writing the material with Hollander, and opening the door for a host of guests, who include Fred Frith on guitar and viola, and Steven Brown on vocals. The sound has evolved since the early days, but is also remarkably true to the legacy of the group – with titles that include "Retour Chez A", "The Untranslatable", "Sgraffites", "True False Fictive", "C'Est Charles", "Silhouettes", "Martial Arts For Boys", "Tout A Une Fin", and "Fatarasie Pulverisee". Luglio/Wah Wah (Spain), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A really experimental set from the Italian scene of the 70s – an album that might easily fit in the great legacy of albums on the Cramps label, even though it was issued by the artist himself! The approach is very unique – as the record mostly features organ and keyboard lines from Giacomo Mino Di Martino – a musician with roots in prog, but who'd also discovered much more avant, creative territory over the years – partly in collaboration with his wife, actress Terra Di Benedetto, who provides some unusual vocalizations on the set! The whole thing is very different than anything we can think of – at times, almost like some of the better melodic moments of the UK industrial underground of the mid 80s, but also with some of the starker qualities that mark the Italian avant scene of the time the album was issued. Eric Burdon & The AnimalsWhen I Was Young – The MGM Recordings 1967/1968 (Winds Of Change/Twain Shall Meet/Everyone Of Us/Love Is/bonus tracks) (5CD set) ... CD
MGM/Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 5CD ... $42.99
A fantastic package of work from The Animals – all their great second chapter albums for MGM, offered up here with bonus tracks too! First up is Winds Of Change, presented in both stereo and mono mixes – one of The Animals' most psychedelic outings ever – and also a bit funky at times too! Production by Tom Wilson is really great – echoey at most moments, with a kind of "flash" and shimmer around the drums that really spaces things out, and almost gives a Velvets sort of feel to the proceedings. The group's bluesier roots are still in place at times – but these have also been tripped-out and abstracted too, in modes that are a few years ahead of other blues rock combos on the rise. Titles include "It's All Meat", "Winds Of Change", "Poem By The Sea", "Yes I Am Experienced", "Hotel Hell", "San Franciscan Nights", and "Man Woman". Next is Twain Shall Meet – a set that's not as tripped-out as some of their other late 60s work, and which almost starts to show Eric Burdon's rising love of soul and funk! The sound is still pretty rockish overall – but there's some great use of bass rumbling at the bottom – bringing up a rumbling quality that fits nicely with Burdon's somewhat bleak presentation of the lyrics at various points. Production by Tom Wilson almost has a raspy, lo-fi sort of feel – different than the bluesier roots of the group, and almost a precursor of indie work in decades to come! Titles include the classic "Sky Pilot", plus "Monterey", "Just The Thought", "Closer To The Truth", "No Self Pity", "Orange & Red Beams", and "We Love You Lil". Every One Of Us is a real gem from The Animals' overlooked late 60s years on MGM – a time when the group were easily making some of the most inventive music on the label! The styles here are even wider than before – definitely an attempt to showcase "every one of us" that made up the group – in a blend of spacey sounds, gentle folksy moments, and some of the rougher tones of previous MGM records. Many titles were written only by Burdon – a bit of a change from before – and showcase an increased use of acoustic guitar alongside his bleak vocals. Titles include "The Immigrant Lad", "Year Of The Guru", "Serenade To A Sweet Lady", "White Houses", "New York 1963/America 1968", and "Uppers & Downers". Next is Love Is – a fantastic double-length set from The Animals – recorded in LA in the late 60s, and with plenty of great Sunset Strip influences in the mix! The band here is different than before – with Zoot Money handling both organ and piano, plus a bit of vocals, and Andy Summers joining in on guitar – and production is by the group itself, who shake off some of the trippier styles of previous records, and almost go for a "live in studio" sort of sound! There's a confluence of styles here that's really great – some of the blues of the group's roots, bits of Eric Burdon's growing love of soul, and some fuzzier touches as well. Some tracks are quite long jams, and titles include "Gemini", "Madman", "As The Years Go Passing By", "To Love Somebody", and "I'm An Animal". Bonus tracks include "Monterey (mono single)", "White Houses (single stereo)", "Anything (single)", "Gratefully Dead", "Ain't That So", "When I was Young", "A Girl Named Sandoz", "River Deep Mountain High (single stereo)", and "Sky Pilot (parts 1 & 2)", CD

Ginny ArnellMeet Ginny Arnell (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
MGM/Poker (UK), 1964. Used ... $8.99
Dreamy 60s pop from Ginny Arnell – a sweet-voiced singer working in a very echoey space! There's a nicely weepy quality to Ginny's music – not in a way that's overly emotive, but which comes from the odd mix of guitar lines, bubbling bass, and heavy echo used to record the music – all with qualities that start feeling sad long before Arnell even sings a word of the lyrics – and which is almost a female equivalent to the best blue modes of Bobby Vinton's work of the same time! Arrangements are by a variety of talents – including Bill McElhieny, Al Gorgoni, and Ray Stevens – but there's a nicely unified feel to the set, thanks to the strong production on the album from Jim Vienneau – clearly an under-acknowledged genius of 60s pop. Titles include "Dumbhead", "I Wish I Knew What Dress To Wear", "I'm So Afraid Of Loving You", "He's My Little Devil", "This Is Mine", "You Pulled A Fast One", "I Don't Want You This Way", and "This Is Mine". One of the spookiest albums we've ever heard from moog maestro Mort Garson – way darker and more complex than his Wozzard Of Id or moogy horoscope projects – with a feel that's much more like his legendary Black Mass album! Like that one, there's a fair current of supernatural running through the mix – an early use of the electronics to explore the darker corners of reality, served up with lots of cool 70s occult touches – in a way that's oddly more timeless than some of the later projects of this nature from the industrial generation. Garson's range of tones is wonderful – from fuzzy bassy bits, to sparkling keyboard lines, to lots of spacey sounds in between – and titles include "I Ching", "Tarot", "Deja Vu", "Seance", "Sorcerer", and "Astral Projection". Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 19.98
The collected work of a mighty trippy group from the Indian scene – a psychedelic combo who worked in the 70s, but who had the same sort of edge you'd hear from the American and British scenes of the late 60s! In truth, there's a fair bit of Anglo influence going on in the music – not just in the English language lyrics, but also in the way the guitars come together with stretched-out, soaring brilliance – flying eight miles high to the sky in a heady brew of freak and fuzz – and turning this approach to some surprising soundtrack numbers too! Production is perfect for the band's vibe – often spacing things out in a really cool way – with some slightly primitive modes that also remind us of the South American psych scene of a few years before. Now Again did a brilliant job with the package – bringing together a host of the group's best tracks from the mid 70s, and a bonus 20 page booklet with full notes on the group, and some very cool photos and ephemera. The whole thing even features a few unreleased numbers – and titles include "Obsession 77", "Sunshine Day", "Butterfly Version 1", "Theme From The Godfather", "Theme From The Fox", "Windmills Of Your Mind", "Booboo Lullaby", "Man You're Not Number One", "Travel On", "Gesthemene", and "Foxy Lady". BadfingerWish You Were Here ... LP
Warner, 1974. Near Mint- ... $99.99
The kind of overlooked, understated gem that should have put Badfinger at the top of the charts in the mid 70s – a record of impeccable songwriting, really great production, and a refinement of an earlier musical ideal that really points the way forward – all while avoiding most of the pitfalls of some of the group's UK contemporaries! There's a quality here that almost reminds us of the more straightforward elements of Wings, but with a rootsy vibe too – almost a bit like Little Feat, but definitely British in terms of the way the vocals come across. The album's overflowing with hooks, and the kinds of songs that should have been huge – and maybe that's what makes it such a treat all these many years later. Brigitte Bardot's best known on these shores as an actress, but during the 60s she cut some really fantastic work on the scene in Paris – including a fair bit of groovers that were done with help from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg! Bardot provided a fantastic new voice in the world of pop music – a singer who was unabashedly open about her desires, and very different than the more melancholy stars of a few years before – a quality that's further emphasized by the wonderfully groovy instrumentation used on most of these tracks! Production and arrangements are superb – and put this music in the best territory of the grooviest 60s French pop by artists like Serge Gainsbourg, France Gall, Jacques Dutronc, and a rare few others. This is the first-ever English-annotated collection of work from the period – and features a whopping 25 tracks from her recordings for Philips and Disc AZ – titles that include "Harley Davidson", "Contact", "Neu Au Soleil", "Je Danse Donc Je Suis", "La Madrague", "Les Hommes Endormis", "Je Voudrais Perdre La Memoire", "Mr Sun", "Le Diable Est Anglais", "Tu Es Venu Mon Amour", "John Et Michel", "Gang Gang", and duets with Serge Gainsbourg on "Bonnie & Clyde" and "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus". Robbie BashoVenus In Cancer ... LP
Blue Thumb/Traffic, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $18.99 24.98
One of the wildest albums ever from the great Robbie Basho – as you might guess from the cover! Basho first made waves with his solo guitar work (and a bit of vocalizations) for the Takoma label, during the early years of John Fahey – but as the 60s ended, Robbie had more of a spiritual awakening – which really changed up certain aspects of his music. The set's still got some beautiful long-spun guitar passages – acoustic work that makes Basho maybe an even closer tie to Sandy Bull than Fahey – but Robbie also sings a bit too, in this weirdly trilling voice that almost feels as if it's been pulled from some 15th century pagan culture, but infused with a new missionary spirit. Most of the set is instrumental, but these vocal moments are wonderfully haunting too – and titles include "Venus In Cancer", "Eagle Sails The Blue Diamond Waters", "Kowaka D'Amour", "Song For The Queen", "Cathedrals Et Fleur De Lis", and "Wine Song (Sweet Wine Of Love)". Capitol, 1966. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest records of all time – and don't you forget it! Despite the countless lines of type that have been written about this record, nothing does it full justice like an all-through listen – something we're reminded of every time we put this one on the turntable, which is a heck of a lot over the years! Brian Wilson busted his ass making this little gem – and the rest of the world, and the band, were never the same again – awash in harmonies that most other groups tried to match, set to themes of young loss, longing, and frustration that really mark an emotional development – not just in the Beach Boys, but in pop music in general. And although some of the tracks are ones you've heard a million times on oldies stations, they somehow resonate together much more strongly here – taking on new meaning as the smaller elements of each song come into constellation with each other – creating a complicated tapestry of feelings set to near-godlike orchestrations. Titles include "God Only Knows", "Caroline No", "Pet Sounds", "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", and "You Still Believe In Me". LP, Vinyl record album

The amazing first album from Big Star – a set that came out of nowhere, made hardly a ripple on the charts, yet went onto crash in big waves of sound for generations to come! The style here is unlike thing else before – hardly what you'd expect from the group's Memphis roots or Alex Chilton's previous performances – yet the group's music has become a generation-defining sound in the way it blends southern inflections with harder rock influences, and a lean, gritty quality that's arguably in a late 70s space between punk and power pop. Every element is wonderful – guitars that are powerful, but never indulgent – vocals that are moving, but never overly emotive – and a balance between sensitive and searing moments that even The Replacements could never hope to match. A landmark all the way through – with tracks that include "Feel", "Ballad Of El Goodo", "In The Street", "The India Song", "When My Baby's Beside Me", "Give Me Another Chance", "Don't Lie To Me", "Thirteen", "Watch The Sunrise", and "Try Again". Tim works here on a self-constructed "crystal machine" – a bank of electronics that was often played in performance to front some trippy film installations (as shown on the cover) – which perfectly suited the stretched-out spacey style of his music! Morello (UK), 1968/1971/1973/1976. New Copy 2 CDs ... $12.99
Four lost albums from David Blue – a really compelling singer/songwriter, ripe for rediscovery! First up is These 23 Days In September, recorded for Reprise – a really moody little record from David Blue – a folksy singer who's got a style that definitely lives up to the melancholy promise of his name! Blue's definitely an artist with a difference – working in the familiar mode of vocals and acoustic guitar, but with an edge and distinctness that really sets him apart from the folkies of a few year before – that sense of different that really set apart a new wave of contemporaries, like Leonard Cohen, Fred Neill, or Tom Rapp. Titles include "These 23 Days In September", "The Sailor's Lament", "Scales For A Window Thief", "You Will Come Back Again", "Slow & Easy", and "The Grand Hotel". Stories is an overlooked early set on Asylum – the kind of really special singer/songwriter material that really set the label apart at the start of the 70s! David Blue has this compelling vocal style that's moody, but down to earth – inflected here and there with guitar contributions from Ry Cooder, who's understated, but really brings out some special qualities in the tunes. Jack Nitzsche adds in some light strings at points – but overall, things are pretty spare and personal – and titles include "Looking For A Friend", "Another One Like Me", "Sister Rose", "The Blues", "Come On John", "Marianne", and "Fire In The Morning". Nice Baby & The Angel shows David Blue really starting to get some star power in his mix – a fuller set, produced by Graham Nash – with work from Nash on guitar, plus more guitar from Dave Mason and David Lindley – in a nice mix of roots elements, but which never overwhelm that unique sense of songwriting and vocals that set David Blue apart from the rest. Titles include "Darlin Jenny", "Troubadour Song", "Train To Anaheim", "True To You", "On Sunday Any Sunday", and "Outlaw Man". On the cover of Cupid's Arrow, David Blue might look a bit cheesy, what with his open shirt and all – but he's definitely the real deal, and very down to earth in his singer/songwriter approach – with a quality that's only underscored by the lineup on the set – a group that features Levon Helm on drums, Jesse Ed Davis on guitar, David Lindley on mandolin and slide, and Barry Goldberg on piano and organ, and also handling production of the album too. The shift from David's roots is a bit like that taken by other contemporaries who once started in more folksy territory, then found a new way to grow in the west coast singer/songwriter scene – and that means that things are more electrified, but still quite far from mainstream music – with original tunes from Blue throughout, and titles that include "I Feel Bad", "Maria Maria", "Primeval Tune", She's Got You", "Tom's Song", and "Run Run Run". Bonzo Dog Doo Dah BandGorilla ... LP
Imperial, 1967. Near Mint- ... $11.99
The insane debut of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band – an amazing late 60s Brit ensemble who were almost to music what Monty Python were to TV! This first effort by the group is a mad array of sounds and styles that come together with a great sense of play and joy – a real delight in quick turns, witty phrases, and parodic re-castings of earlier modes – inspired by dada work of the early 20th century, but also handled with a lot more of a post-modern feel overall. Most tracks are short, and many echo earlier music styles, filtered through a slightly psyche filter – and titles include "Death Cab For Cutie", "In San Francisco", "Jollity Farm", "Equestrian Statue", "Cool Brittania", "I'm Bored", "Piggy Bank Love", "Big Shot", "Mickey's Son & Daughter", and "The Sound Of Music". Bow Wow WowSee Jungle! See Jungle! Go Join Your Gang Yeah! City All Over, Go Ape Crazy ... LP
RCA, 1981. Very Good+ ... $7.99
"I'm a rock n' roll puppet, in a band called Bow Wow Wow." What a weird, defiantly appealing moment in pop music it was when Malcolm McClaren assembled members of The Ants and 15-year-old Annabella Lwin – who then paired bratty lyrics with African-inspired drums & rhythms. What should have been an affront to good taste (you can legitimately argue that it it was) just sounds like a bunch of thumping, boisterous fun to us. Titles include "Jungle Boy", "King Kong", "Chihuahua", "Go Wild In The Country", "Why Are Babies So Wise?", "Orang-Outang", "Hello, Hello Daddy (I'll Sacrifice You)" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

David BowieConversation Piece (5CD & book set) ... CD
Parlophone, Late 60s. New Copy 5CD & book ... $64.99 99.99
An amazing legacy of lost music from David Bowie – a host of obscure recordings, demos, and session tracks done in the short space leading up to the Space Oddity album – presented in a book-style package that also features two versions of that classic record too! Some of this material has circulated digitally, others on very expensive vinyl sets, but together the 5CD package offers up the biggest picture we've ever seen of the development of Bowie in the years after his initial recordings for Deram, and his Space Oddity explosion in 1969. CD1 features home demos of tunes that include "Animal Farm", "April's Tooth Of Gold", "The Reverend Raymond Brown", "Mother Grey", "Goodbye 3d Joe", "Angel Angel Grubby Face", and "Space Oddity". CD2 offers up rare demos for Mercury – with titles that include "Janine", "Ching A Ling", "I'm Not Quite", "Lover To The Dawn", "When I'm Five", and "Life Is A Circus". CD3 features Conversation Pieces – alternate takes of "London By Ta Ta" and "In The Heat Of The Morning" - plus BBC sessions, and more alternate takes. CD4 features the original David Bowie album before it transformed into Space Oddity, and CD5 features the full Space Oddity album in its 2019 Tony Visconti mix – both CDs with bonus tracks too. Includes a great 120 page hardcover book, too! CD

David BowieSpace Oddity (picture disc) ... LP
RCA, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
An amazing departure for David Bowie – hardly the kind of record you would expect from his oboe-filled tunes of a few years before – and really the start of the groundbreaking, earthshaking, reinventionist era of his genius! There's a spacious, soaring quality to Space Oddity that's every bit the kind of magical music you might hope for in a set recorded at the close of the 60s – a shift into new modes, new sounds that seem to suck up all the best influences in rock from the previous few years, but fuse it into a new cosmic vision for the next decade. And while others might stumble on cliche with the weight of such a task, Bowie pulls it off brilliantly – mixing his fuzzier feelings with some of his more personal leanings – and showcasing a newly deep sense of songwriting here that's really amazing. Some tunes have the sensitivity of work on Hunky Dory, while others burn with the fire of Man Who Sold The World – all in a balance that never sounds schizophrenic at all. Titles include"Space Oddity", "Memory Of A Free Festival", "God Knows I'm Good", "Cygnet Committee", and "Unwashed & Somewhat Slightly Dazed". LP, Vinyl record album

David BowieStation To Station (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI/Ryko, 1976. Used ... $7.99
The second half of Bowie's Thin White Duke years in the studio – a record that's more cool and condense than his Young American album – but equally sublime in its own sort of way! The format here is much more compact – with a small group working alongside Bowie, still with some currents of Philly soul – but also some of the darker tones that would come to the forefront during the Berlin years after this album's release – a mode that's maybe hinted at by the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. A few tracks are long, and build up beautifully – showing a new sort of subtlety from Bowie – and titles include the classic "Station To Station", plus "Golden Years", "Word On A Wing", "TVC 15", "Stay", and "Wild Is The Wind". BreakawayBreakaway/Straight On To The Top ... CD
Breakaway/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 14.99
A pair of completely rare albums from Breakaway – a St Louis combo from the late 70s – with a groove that's equal part jazzy club and blue-eyed soul! Breakaway is the group's debut – recorded in 1977 with a surprisingly tight sound – especially given that the group were essentially a local club act who got the chance to record a bit in a local studio! The feel is very much in the best LA mode of the time, but maybe a bit looser too – with emphasis on some funky riffing from the male members of the group, plus sweet lead vocals from singer Kathy Newbry-Taylor – an artist who might have been pop, had she worked on the coasts – but who stretches her style nicely here. The album's been made famous by both On Track and Americana comps on BBE – and titles include "There's A New Group In Town", "Who Was It This Time", "Love My Eyes", "Understudy DJ", "Everything's Been Said About You", and "My Symphony". Right On To The Top is the second set from Breakaway – and the album already shows a great deal of growth – especially in the territory of rhythm! Breakaway have definitely dug some of the best club modes from the New York scene – and work here in a jazzy disco style that's filled with sweet keyboard lines alongside the female lead vocals – all with a vibe that's nicely stripped-down, and still lives up to the indie spirit of the group. The set features some guest work on horns, which nicely expands the sound – and titles include "Straight On To The Top", "You Are Love", "Back & Forth", "There's A New Tree In The Forest", "Work With The Music", and "Breakaway". Brother TheodoreFate Conspires With Destiny To Do Me Dirt – 1959 to 1972 ... CD
Omni (Australia), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Completely bizarre work from Brother Theodore – a strange postwar cultural figure who'd arrived in the US from a rescue of the holocaust hellhole of Dachau, then reinvented himself as an offbeat actor and monologist! Theodore's got a very strange voice, one that's partly inflected by his accent, but which mostly comes from the pointed way he presents his word – often with rolling consonants, and this sense of acting, even when speaking – which is what he mostly does on the record, save for some added musical effects and very slight production twists. Theodore briefly worked with Orson Welles, and there's almost a Welles-like sense of creativity and pomposity on these recordings – which were just part of the Brother's calling card, as he spent years doing his act in New York clubs, and also spent some time on the west coast too – a surprisingly strong underground figure. This release brings together the 1959 Coral Records album Theodore In Stereo, plus two tracks recorded for the PIP label in 1972, and one unreleased track – with titles that include "The Willow Landscape", "Quadrupedism", "The Curse Of The Toad", "Lisolatta Bindfel", and "I'm Just Plain Folks". ✨✧ Tim BuckleyDream Letter – Live In London 1968 ... CD
Enigma Retro, 1968. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
A fantastic live outing from the legendary Tim Buckley – one that not only includes Tim singing unusual versions of some of his album tracks from the late 60s, but which also includes a number of songs that he never recorded elsewhere! Plus, the quartet on the date also features Dave Friedman on vibes – bringing in that wonderful blend of vibes and acoustic guitar that made Buckley's early work so great, and which really gave his songs such a different spirit than so many of his contemporaries! Tim also plays and sings alone on three of the album's tracks – further intensifying the musical quality of the set – a record that is completely essential, even if you own most of Buckley's classics already. Titles include "The Troubadour", "I've Been Out Walking", "Hallucinations", "Dolphins", "Who Do You Love", "The Earth Is Broken", "Carnival Song/Hi Lili Hi Lo", "Pleasant Street", "The Earth Is Broken", "Wayfaring Stranger", Happy Time", and "Once I Was". ✨✧ Tim BuckleyLook At The Fool ... LP
DiscReet, 1973. Near Mint- ... $16.99
The last album that Tim Buckley ever gave the world – and a great leaping-off point for speculation about what he might have done, had he not left the planet too soon! Tim's actually beginning to explore a bit of funk in his music here – still using that amazing voice with all of its range from the early Elektra years – but often set to backings that feature heavy drums from Earl Palmer, tight bass from Chuck Rainey, and keyboards from Mike Melvoin – all cats who can be tight, but never slick – and whose groove is more than loose enough to let Buckley direct the whole proceedings. Given that Tim has an occasional raw rasp, and a very offbeat way with his lyrics, the mix of elements is actually not that far from the funk of Betty Davis on her first two albums – with a similar shrug towards any easy genre categorizations. Titles include "Freeway Blues", "Look At The Fool", "Tijuana Moon", "Mexicali Voodoo", "Down In The Street", "Wanda Lou", and "Bring It On Up". LP, Vinyl record album

Sandy BullFantasias For Guitar & Banjo ... LP
Vanguard/Alternative Fox (UK), 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
Mindblowing minimalism from the legendary Sandy Bull – an artist who might have had acoustic roots in folk music, but who was instantly turning his music into something else – drawing on modal styles of Eastern music, European generations of expression on guitar, jazz-based improvisation – and maybe even prefiguring work to come from composers like Terry Riley and La Monte Young! This album's one of Bull's first, and it's pure genius right from the start – with a side-long performance on the incredible "Blend", which features slight drums from jazz musician Billy Higgins – which Sandy extrapolates these long passages on acoustic guitar. Side two features the fantastic "Carmina Burana Fantasy" on banjo – a kind of trans-historical performance that's right up there with John Fahey's best of the decade – alongside equally mindblowing "Non Nobis Domine" and "Little Maggie" – and the closing electric guitar genius of "Gospel Tune". Eric Burdon & The AnimalsEvery One Of Us ... LP
MGM, 1968. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Another gem from The Animals' overlooked late 60s years on MGM – a time when the group were easily making some of the most inventive music on the label! CD features a bonus single version of "White Houses". LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny BurnetteRock N Roll Trio/Tear It Up ... CD
Coral/BGO (UK), 1956/1957. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
A pair of full length albums from Johnny Burnette – one of the greatest talents in the early years of rock and roll! First up is the seminal Rock & Roll Trio album on Coral from 1956 – a stunning little record and one that's had an undeniable influence on the sound of guitar-based music for generations to come – from rockabilly to garage, psych, and punk – thanks to groundbreaking work from the Johnny Burnette Trio! The album's one of the first really raw records to be cut as a full length rock release – not a handful of previous singles mixed with filler, but a nonstop jammer that has the core trio occasionally augmented by larger horns, but never losing the energy of their sound – or that incredible bite on guitar. The use of fuzz here is landmark – especially on the classic "Train Kept A Rollin" – the group's remake of a Tiny Bradshaw tune, refocused in energy that would later be picked up by The Yardbirds. But the whole thing's great, too – and other titles include "Sweet Love On My Mind", "Lonesome Train", "Honey Hush", "I Just Found Out", "Chains Of Love", "I Love You So", and "Rock Billy Boogie". Tear It Up was a later 90s album that pulled together more obscure moments from the trio – but the quality of the work is rock-solid throughout – as Johnny and Dorsey Burnette play with raw intensity and razor-sharp musicianship. Titles include "Shattered Dreams", "My Love You're A Stranger", "Oh Baby Babe", "Tear It Up", "You're Undecided", "Midnight Train", and "If You Want It Enough". CD

Joe Byrd & The Field HippiesAmerican Metaphysical Circus ... LP
Columbia, 1969. Sealed ... $29.99
An amazing little record from Joe Byrd – an artist with roots in serious music, but who's serving things up here with a wild hippie aesthetic that makes the whole thing come across more like a "happening" than the usual sort of studio album – but in ways that also echo an earlier generation of Americanist composition too. The process of the record mimics some of Byrd's famous work in New York – and has a very collaborative feel overall, with elements of electronics, acoustics, and vocals coming together beautifully! There's some great tabla, harpsichord, moog, and organ on the record – plus more serious woodwinds and brass – and vocals from Victoria Bond, Susan De Lange, Christie Thompson, and Ernie Anderson – plus Joe himself. Titles include "Kalyani", "Moonsong Pelog", "You Can't Ever Come Down", "Gospel Music", "Nightmare Train", "Leisure World", and "The Elephant At The Door". LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, 1967. Near Mint- ... $6.99
An insanely wonderful early album from Glenn Campbell – the kind of music that's not really rock, pop, or country – but instead a unique summation of all, at a level that only Campbell could do this well The album kicks off with the sublime pop hit "Gentle On My Mind" – one of those jangly tunes that we could listen to forever – and then soars into a beautiful blend of tunes from different sources, including covers of Nilsson's "Without Her", Rod McKuen's "The World I Used to Know", Jimmie Rodgers' "It's Over", and Donovan's "Catch The Wind" – as well as the huge hit "Mary In The Morning". Glenn's got a hell of a voice – and it sounds great on all the tracks! LP, Vinyl record album
