Roxy MusicCountry Life ... CD
Virgin (UK), 1974. Used ... $6.99
The fourth album from Roxy Music – and quite possibly their best to date! The album has the group moving strongly past the Eno years, into a tighter framework that still contains many of the darker themes of earlier records. Ferry's lead vocals are incredibly majestic – rising to heights to match the European greats of years past who were his inspiration – and the group's tight blend of reeds, guitar, and moody keyboards gives the whole album an off-kilter sense of instrumentation that really sets it apart from the pack. There's an artfulness here that's never overdone, and the whole thing comes together with a magic that's impossible to describe, but which is Roxy at their best. Titles include "Out Of The Blue", "The Thrill Of It All", "Three & Nine", "Triptych", "Casanova", and "Prairie Rose". CD
(HDCD remastered version. BMG club pressing.)

Beaver & KrauseNonesuch Guide To Electronic Music ... LP
Nonesuch, 1968. Near Mint- 2LPs + Book ... $24.99
One of the most electronic albums that Beaver & Krause ever recorded – a set that was issued as a Guide To Electronic Music, but which has a way more to offer than just a simple demonstration record! Unlike most other B&K albums, which can feature a bit of rock mixing in with the moog, this one is almost entirely analogue electronics – often played in a stark, spare way that has plenty of spooky tones – but also works beautifully together in a mode that's similar to other experimental electronic sets from the time, such as Morton Subotnick's contemporaneous records for Nonesuch. The tracks are very short, with concentrated bursts of sound, and have titles like "White Sound", "Ribbon Controller", and "Sawtooth". Comes in a box with a very cool book that explains a lot of different properties of electronic music. Great for sample-heads or for junior knob twiddlers. 2 LPs strong! LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the booklet and Nonesuch inner sleeves. NOTE – Box has a split spine held with clear tape and black electrical tape at the top, and split corners held with clear tape.)

BuzzcocksAnother Music In A Different Kitchen (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI (UK), 1978. Used 2CD ... $11.99
The fantastic first full album from The Buzzcocks – a group who'd already set the UK scene on fire with a flurry of amazing singles at the start of the punk generation! Here, they amazingly keep up all the great energy of their 7" releases – moving at a blistering pace throughout, with more focus than the Sex Pistols in their instrumentation, and a mixture of drum, bass, and guitar interplay that virtually became the blueprint for the whole west coast hardcore scene to come! Pete Shelly has never sounded so sinister, and the mighty Martin Rushnet puts the whole thing together with beautifully lean production – on classics that include "Fast Cars", "No Reply" "Get On Our Own", "I Don't Mind", "Autonomy", "Love Battery", "I Need", "Moving Away From The Pulsebeat", and "Fictionromance". UK pressing includes 4 bonus tracks originally released as 7" singles. CD

✨✧ Country Joe & The FishElectric Music For The Mind & Body ... LP
Vanguard, 1967. Very Good ... $19.99
A seminal set from Country Joe & The Fish – one of those albums that brought the new psychedelic sound strongly into the mainstream – but all without softening up or commercializing it at all! There's still a very sharp edge to the record – mean organ lines, fuzzy guitar, and lots of cool production that makes the sounds weirder and more watery than before – even the vocals, which have this edge that nobody would ever refer to as Sunshine Pop! In a way, the whole set's as sinister as any of the most groundbreaking albums on Elektra from the time – and definitely shows that both Vanguard and the group were at the forefront of the new psych recording scene. Titles include "Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine", "Super Bird", "Death Sound", "Sad And Lonely Times", "The Masked Marauder", "Grace", and "Bass Strings". LP, Vinyl record album

Sleeping Bag, 1981. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $16.99 24.99
An incredible full album from Dinosaur L – the legendary New York dancefloor project of Arthur Russell! The group's a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! The tracks on the set are simply numbered – "1", "2", "3", and so on – and come across almost as free-jamming instrumentals! Totally great stuff – as experimental as it is funky! EdenMiasto Szczesliwiych Ludzi – 1976 Polish Library Music From The WFDIF Vaults ... CD
GAD (Poland), 1976. New Copy ... $16.99
A rare instrumental outing from Eden – a Polish trio that first began as a blues-rock group, then moved into progressive territory, before hitting a lighter folksier style – none of which really comes close to the vibe of this material from a rare sound library session in 1976! There's fusion elements in the mix at times – like tight drums and funky flute – but the record also has a wider palette of colors, too – quite a surprise, given that the group is just a trio – as they find ways to evoke some larger studio ensemble sounds from time to time. As with all the great titles in this series, there's detailed notes in both Polish and English – and titles include "Sen", "Dzungla", "Scherzo", "Eksperyment Nr 1", "Daleka Podroz", and "Male Inwencje". Brian EnoFilm Music 1976 to 2020 ... CD
Astralwerks, Late 70s/1980s/1990s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Many years back, Brian Eno gave us a record called Music For Films – a set that came out during his initial run of Ambient recordings, showing us how strong his instrumental creations could be when and if applied to a cinematic mode! The tracks there were half imagined works for film – and those of us who loved Eno were always hoping that it would lead to more prominent scoring for the electrosonic genius. Turns out, that happened anyway – as this set of 17 tracks will attest – a rising Eno role in the film soundtrack world, served up on contributions from big productions and lesser-known gems. The set features work from films that include Heat, We Are As Gods, Trainspotting, Married To The Mob, Jubilee, Top Boy, Sebastiane, Hammerhead, Rams, Lovely Bones, Francis Bacon's Arena, and Cool World – a surprisingly rich array of material! IasosAngelic Music ... CD
Fact Of Being, 1978. New Copy ... $13.99 16.98
Dreamy sounds from Iasos – an early proponent of the world of new age music, but one that's far hipper than the bigger-label acts to come in the 80s! This set is beautifully spare and meditative – two side-long tracks, each a kind of warmer, more sentimental take on territory that Brian Eno was exploring with his ambient music projects – inflected maybe with a slightly spiritual vibe, as you'd guess from the title! Instrumentation is mostly electric, but used in ways that also really show the manner in which these early American pioneers of the format were marking their own space away from German electronic experimentation. The album features extended versions of "The Angels Of Comfort" and "Angel Play – each around the 30 minute mark! (Out Sound, Rock) CD

Fact Of Being, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 27.98
Bizarre home made electronics from the enigmatic Iasos – an artist who later went onto a bit of fame in the new age, but who's working here in a trippier, spacier, almost psychedelic mode! The style is often quite personal, and almost naive – as Iasos works on guitar, keyboards, amplified flute, and other odd tape and studio effects – all flowing out with a style that's often a bit cosmic, and which could work well as some of the shorter link tracks on an early 70s Impulse album. Tunes are often relatively short, and titles include "Libra Sunrise", "Lueena Coast", "Lagoon Night", "Siren Shallows", "Aries", "Angel Play", "The Bubble Massage", and "Maha-Splendor". New York Rock & Roll EnsembleReflections – Music Composed By Manos Hadjidakis ... LP
Atco, 1970. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Quite possibly the most interesting album ever from the New York Rock & Roll Ensemble – a set done in close collaboration with Greek soundtrack maestro Manos Hadjidakis! The tunes are all penned by Hadjidakis, and they're performed by the group in an ambitious mode that has more than a few echoes of their Balkan heritage – bits of oboe, cello, and guitar used in ways that have a distinctly Greek-sounding flavor – supported by more conventional rock-styled rhythms that still manage to have a quality that's a bit more majestic than just regular small group rocking! Vocals are all in English, penned by members of the band on top of Hadjidakis' compositions – and the album's a great crossroads between 60s psyche and soundtrack genres. Titles include "Dedication", "The Day", "Love Her", "Dance Of The Dogs", "Kemal", "Orpheus", "Noble Dame", and "Better Way". LP, Vinyl record album

Lupus/Cinedelic (Italy), 1971. New Copy ... On June 12, 2021
A sweet psychedelic set, but one with very mysterious origins – originally recorded as a sound library session, by a group that was really the better-known Nuova Idea! The album's definitely got a vibe that fits its sound library roots – all instrumental, with a bit less bravado than most psyche albums of this type – almost more of a focus on the rhythms, which stretch out strongly amidst the Hammond and guitar solos on the set. The whole thing's still pretty rockish, but also has a deeper sensitivity to the overall sound too – a quality that's partly due to production efforts of Giampiero Reverberi. Titles include "Easy", "Psycheground", "Traffic", "Ray", and "Tube". (Note: This item is not for sale online until noon on Saturday, June 12. Helen ShapiroFace The Music – The Complete Singles 1967 to 1984 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Excellent work from Helen Shapiro – a UK singer known for a few big hits in the 60s, but represented here by a much wider scope of work – including a number of tracks that appear here on CD for the first time ever! Like some of the best of her generation, Helen's got that sweet UK female pop approach that's often heavy on influences from American soul, especially Motown – so that she really soars as she belts on the lyrics, over tunes that often have similarly soulful arrangements and really impeccable production! The package brings together both the a-sides and b-sides of singles recorded for a number of different labels – all with the superb Ace Records presentation that includes detailed notes and excellent sound quality – and the focus is mostly on material from the late 60s and early 70s. Titles include "She Needs Company", "Sill Boy", "Today Has Been Cancelled", "Face The Music", "Stop & You Will Become Aware", "Just Another Weekend", "Brickyard Blues", "That's The Reason I Love You", "A Glass Of Wine", "Waiting On The Shores Of Nowhere", "Take Me For A While", "The Way Of The World", and "Touchin Wood". Stones Throw, 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... $20.99 21.99
Benny Sings has a scruffy sort of look on the cover here – but his music is wonderfully smooth and soulful – every bit the sound that we've loved on all of his previous records, and which makes Benny maybe one of the under-discovered talents of the global scene of the past decade or so! Benny's got a way of putting together songs that are simple and tuneful, often with relatively light instrumentation – but which have a way of getting his charms across right from the start, like he's some sort of top-shelf Cali talent from the 70s, just cooking up cool little tunes in his home studio on Fender Rhodes. Titles include "Here It Comes", "Nobody's Fault", "Break Away", "Sunny Afternoon", "Run Right Back", "Miracles", "Music", and "Lost Again". (Neo Soul, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Spacemen 3Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To (with download) ... LP
Superior Viaduct, 1986. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
The title certainly gets it right – as Spacemen 3 were legally-registered heroin addicts in the UK at the time of this recording – very unusual in the years before heroin chic of the 90s! The set came out after the group's first few landmark records, but actually features earlier demo material recorded in 1986 – really wonderful sounds that are a great change from the tighter direction the group were taking as the 90s moved on – as these sides still have them very much awash in fuzz, and probably pretty fuzzed-out themselves! Sonic Boom provides loads of wonderfully trippy guitar feedback, and the group's a quartet here – with guitar, bass, and percussion – on titles that include "Come Down Easy", "That's Just Fine", "Mary Anne", "Sound Of Confusion", "A-Men", and "Losing Touch With My Mind". Talking HeadsFear Of Music ... LP
Sire, 1979. Very Good ... $34.99
A really tremendous album from The Talking Heads – and a set that moves far past their already-great early records, to really show a rhythmic complexity we never would have expected! Brian Eno is helping the group in the studio again here, and the record really shows both David Byrne and Eno's late 70s fascination with global rhythms – elements that are often used in spare, simple little ways to really help inflect the tunes with a playful imagination that goes way beyond the colder post-punk and new wave of most of their contemporaries! The balance of previous aesthetics with these new grooves is wonderful – heard to great effect on the classic club cut "I Zimbra" – but brewing up strongly underneath on gems that include "Mind", "Paper", "Cities", "Life During Wartime", "Memories Can't Wait", "Air", "Heaven", "Animals", "Electric Guitar", and "Drugs". The final album from Trapeze – and a set that has them stepping out as a super-heavy trio who should have been huge! Glenn Hughes handles bass and all the lead vocals – with the best qualities he would soon bring to Deep Purple – and the drums from David Holland are fantastic – full of all the right sort of power and drive to make the lean lineup work so well! Guitarist Mel Galley has really grown a lot since the start – and turns out some solos and leads here that should have made him one of the bigger acts of the growing hard rock generation from the UK – save for the fact that he's also got a wonderful ear for more sensitive moments, which makes this record far more deep than just a standard rocker. Titles include "Loser", "You Are The Music", "Way Back To The Bone", "Keepin Time", "Coast To Coast", "Will Our Love End", and "Feelin So Much Better Now". CD

Denis WiseWize Music ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $18.99
Denis Wise plays all instruments on this record – everything but the kitchen sink! Oh wait – the liner notes actually indicate that he does play a kitchen sink – and a garbage disposal too – but in ways that are completely changed, as he mixes them with sounds from a variety of guitars, keyboards, percussion, and various electronic instruments – all in this wild style that's surprisingly earthy and organic! At some level, the music is more a garage version of electro-acoustic modes from the academy – but at another, it's pure unbridled creation, with a sense of sonic joy that really comes through on the best numbers. Some songs are slightly tuneful, and there's maybe a bit of offbeat abstracted vocals here and there – on tunes that include "Balfazzar", "Light As Air", "Valhalla", "Machine Time Ship", "Love In Foam & Surf", "Andro", "Celes", and "Hedonic Rapture". The music here is a perfect blend of hypnotic minimalism and electronic mysticism – pre-new age, with none of the goofier trappings of that time – and in a space between the long-form keyboard work of Terry Riley, and some of the more space-oriented electronics coming from the post-prog scenes in Germany and France! The tracks flow beautifully, with a very organic pulse – almost as if Xolotl is tapping into the energy of the universe, and finding a way to communicate it in music. Ace (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A fantastic little collection – one that gets at a special side of the 70s European scene that wasn't quite prog, wasn't quite art rock, and wasn't quite experimental – but which definitely lay to the left of the mainstream during the decade and really helped set the tone for years to come! The music here is heavy on influences from the German scene, but also features some British tracks too – often in a way that makes a leaner approach to some of the bigger ideas of prog – with a more stripped-down approach, and often a less top-heavy sound – so that these cuts slide right in and sneak up on you with a really subtle sense of power. You'll recognize some of the names here, but the choice of tracks is key – put together by Bob Stanley, who gave us some other excellent "imaginary soundtrack" compilations from Ace. Titles include "Way Star" by Rubba, "L'Eroe Di Plastica" by Toni Esposito, "Tommy" by Focus, "Octave Doctors" by Steve Hillage, "Troupeau Bleau" by Cortex, "Canoe" by Piero Umiliani, "Penny Hitch" by Soft Machine, "Eileen" by Streetmark, "Jennifer" by Faust, "A Morning Excuse" by Amon Duul II, "Pony" by Annette Peacock, and "Don't You Know" by Jan Hammer. Svart (Finland), 1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $16.99
Finland's been giving us some great funk and soul sounds in recent years, but that legacy stretches back much longer than we might have guessed – to a point that includes all these groovy disco and electronic dance tracks from the 80s! The set's a follow-up to the Satan In Love compilation, which charted similar territory – but this one moves more into a world that's influenced by some of the electro pop modes that were coming out of the UK in the early 80s, with maybe a touch of the European disco of the decade before – especially in the style of some of the female singers here, who could just as easily have been working with Munich Machine, or some of the other German and Italian groups. Lyrics are mostly in Finnish, but the keyboards, drum machines, and basslines are universal – on titles that include "Jossakin Jos Halaut" by Eini, "Jupiter" by Jori Sivonen, "Big & Beautiful" by Visual, "Night Is Like Magic" by Biba, "Hi Jacker" by Buffalo Soldier, "Sormus" by Clifters, "Grandmaster Klaus" by Mad Lindell, "Nuori Inka" by Jarmo Juhani, "Robotin USA" by Vaarallinen Mutanti, "Cold War On The Rocks" by Step On The Other Side, and "Tahdenlento" by Mika Sundqvist. A really fantastic compilation – and one that will take your collection of German electronic music far past the familiar territory of Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream! This series has always been great, but it also seems like the longer it goes, the deeper it digs – which is definitely the case here – as the genius compilers at Soul Jazz mix together rare cuts from better-known names, and more obscure artists from the 70s – in modes that also move past straight electronic music, to include some funky bits, proggy moments, and a nice shift between vocal and instrumental focus – so that there's a really amazing world of music within. VariousFrom These Shores – Otherworldly Music & Far Out Sounds From Hawaii ... LP
Aloha Got Soul, 1960s/1970s/1980s. New Copy ... $22.99
A really unusual little compilation – hardly anything that you might expect when you think of Hawaiian music – but that's kind of the lesson we've also been learning from the Aloha Got Soul label! Instead, the package brings together obscure recordings from the island state – tracks from the 60s, 70s, and 80s – many of which fall into a unique space that's really beyond any sort of easy categorization or genre – described on the cover as "sun-tinged folk" and "soft psych" – two phrases that only get at the tip of the iceberg of what's going on! Much of the music is laidback and mellow, but also has a sunny, breezy vibe that ever keeps things from being too sleepy – maybe touches of Cali soul and rock in the post-folk, post-Sunshine Pop world – but with a special sound that's as far from that scene as Hawaii is from the mainland. Titles include "Waves" by Harry Sonoda, "In Hawaii" by Dennis Soares, "Reb'll Echo" by Richard Reb'll, "Righteous Morning" by Gordon Broad, "Kaimu Sun" by Alice Wise, "Magic Sands" by Mofoya, "Revelation" by Burgess & Brooks, "High Tide" by Eddie Suzuki, "Garden In The Rain" by Merrell Fankhauser, and "How Many Times" by Lyle K'Ang. Omni (Australia), 1950s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A hell of a cool little set – one that begins with obscure country songs about drug use, then moves onto a whole host of songs with themes of suicide, insanity, damnation, and redemption! The music is every bit as great as you'd guess from the title and cover – and the folks at Omni, who already do an amazing job with obscure country reissues, really knock it out of the park with this one – by pulling together two decades' worth of unusual tracks from the indie underground – all supported by great notes as well. The package is a heady journey through the underbelly of country – sounds you'd never hear on the charts – and titles include "Suicide" by Louie Innis, "Satan's Chauffeur" by Jimmy Minor, "Marijuana The Devil Flower" by Johnny Price, "The Needle" by Harry Snyder, "California Hippie Murders" by Red River Dave, "Demon Of Jealousy" by Jesse Bruce, "The Devil Was Laughing At Me" by Jimmy Newman, "Psycho" by Eddie Noack, "Three AM" by Bill Anderson, "Race With The Devil" by Johnny David, and "Fourteen Stories Down" by Don Bailey. This deluxe reissue includes 2 bonus tracks – "Hades Highway" by Len Barrow and "Hellbound Train" by Dick Flood. (Folk/Country, Rock) CD

Omni (Australia), 1950s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Deep deep country music, from the glory days of the genres – the kind of tracks that start in the territory of the Louvin Brothers' Satan Is Real, then take off into a whole host of different themes based on sinning, saving, and redemption! The vibe here is every bit as great as the previous volumes in the series – and as the compilations have gone on, they've only gotten more surprising – really moving past the obvious cuts for such a collection, and pulling together some real gems from the farther reaches of postwar country music! CD features 30 tracks in all – and titles include "Oh Death" by John Reedy & The Stone Mountain Trio, "Fire's A Coming" by Swanee River Boys, "Death's Black Train" by AL Phipps Family, "Heaven Bound Train" by Lewis Family, "Jesus Is On My Side" by Richard Miller, "A Wonderful Time Up There" by Wally Fowler & The Oak Ridge Quartet, "The Story Of The Street Girl" by Lonnie Glosson, "Filthy Sea Of Sin" by Ernest Carter, and "Are You Insured Beyond The Grave" by Little Jimmy Dickens. A beautiful entry in this long-running series – a continuing testament to the darker sides of American life that formed the subject matter for so much of postwar country music! The package brings together some great tunes by bigger names of the time – not entirely hits, but the kind of material that these top-shelf talents can turn out with effortless ease – bringing just the right balance of subtle emotion to send the whole thing home in just the right way! These aren't overdone weepies, but honest songs about the tragedy that is life – served up here on 16 titles that include "One Dyin & A Buryin" by Roger Miller, "The Drunken Driver" by Ferlin Husky, "I'm Low Low Low" by Loy Clingman, "The Town That Broke My Heart" by Bobby Bare, "All My Trials" by Anita Carter, "Bury The Bottle With Me" by Dick Curless, "None Of My Business" by Henson Cargill, "Jim Johnson" by Porter Wagoner, "The Old Pine Tree" by Red Sovine, and "Goin To Hell On A Sled" by John D Loudermilk. The title's a reference to a Beatles' song – and the set brings together a range of classical and other styles of music that had a huge influence on the 60s pop scene – a number of sources that you'll definitely recognize in later work by the Fab Four, plus lots more important work as well! About eighty percent of the set is classical, in a mix of both avant/20th Century, and some warmer more sentimental modes – and the package also includes a few choice cuts from the world of jazz, European pop, and even global music – so that the 3CD set features this amazing mix of sounds from artists who include Charlie Parker, Jacques Brel, Bernard Herrmann, Yusef Lateef, Bruno Martino, Lucio Alves, Sun Ra, Ravi Shankar, and composers who include Berio, Bach, Xenakis, Stravinsky, Holst, Handel, Williams, Stockhausen, Ravel, and John Cage. 51 tracks in all – and notes that help guide you through this amazing musical journey. Warner/Wounded Bird, 1971. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
One of the less-remembered records from the era of the giant rock festival – a set of tracks that were recorded during a wild cross-country hippie caravan! Although maybe not another Woodstock, the album does have some long live tracks that are really worth seeking out – in a relatively surprising blend of musicians that makes for a pretty interesting record overall! Highlights include a searing eight minute take on "Black Juju" by Alice Cooper, a ten minute medley of "How Blue Can You Get/Just A Little Love" by BB King, a twelve minute "Freakout/It Takes A Lot To Laugh" by Stoneground, a version of "Free The People" by Delaney & Bonnie, one of the rawest Doug Kershaw performances we've ever heard on "Louisiana Man/Battle Of New Orleans/Orange Blossom Special", Sal Valentino singing "Dreambo", and the Youngbloods tracks "Hippie From Olema" and "Act Naturally", both nicely tongue in cheek. Ace (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A wild assortment of music from an equally wild source – a BBC Radio program hosted by Jarvis Cocker, presented on Sunday mornings as a way to relax and reach some sort of deeper spiritual consciousness! The show was never churchy – but maybe an attempt to find a new sort of inner peace during the modern age – with a selection of songs in a really great range, all linked by the dry wit and understated presence of Cocker as an announcer. This set brings together key tracks from the early years of the show – music that spans decades, and runs from jazz vocal numbers, to electronic music nuggets, 70s AOR, underground folk, and a number of more recent tracks that show that Jarvis has continually had his ear on the rock underground around the globe. The blend is incredibly hard to describe in words, but a delight to hear on record – and the whole thing comes with detailed notes on the track selections from Cocker himself. Titles include "Snowed In" by Tim Rose, "Day Glo" by Serafina Steer, "Cold Rain" by Alternative TV, "Won't That Be A Happy Time" by Joseph & Louis Spence, "Old Molly Metcalfe" by Jake Thackery, "Waters Of March" by Art Garfunkel, "It's A Quiet Thing" by Morgana King, "Rock Intro" by Miranda July, "After The Gold Rush" by The King's Singers, "Invasion Muzak" by John Baker, "True Love Will Find You In The End" by Headless Heroes, "Cars" by The Katzenjammers, "Crazy In Love" by Antony & The Johnsons, "Don't Wait Too Long" by Bob Welch, "Baltimore" by Nina Simone, "December" by David Cain/Derek Boswell, "Gynopedie No 3" by Camarata Contemporary Chamber Group, and "The Interrogative Mood" by Jarvis Cocker & David Cunningham. Each member of The Band brings such inimitable textures – Garth Hudson's imposing organ grooves, Richard Manuel's aching tenor vocals, Rick Danko's voice and distinctive bass lines, Levon Helm's behind-the-beat drumming and the country wisdom of his voice, Robertson's guitar mastery – this really was THE Band. Amazing solo work from ex-Zombie Colin Blunstone – his first album after parting ways with his former group – and one of our favorite albums of all time! Blunstone's vocals were already amazing in The Zombies – especially near the end – but this set takes things even further, by blending his sublime lyrics with spare arrangements that often just feature simple string passages and warm piano parts – subtle accompaniment that leaves Colin strongly in the lead! The songs are wonderful – penned to recall the changes and issues of the year after the parting of the group – with plenty of help from old buddies Rod Argent and Chris White too. There's never been another record like this again, and there never will be – one of the true treasures of the greatest generation of music! EMI/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Brilliant work from CCS – a jazz-rock big band led by UK blues rocker Alexis Korner, arranged by Brit easy maestro John Cameron, and produced to full strength by the legendary Mickie Most! The group had a sound that was really great – with lots of fuzzy guitars up front in the mix, supported by a larger, fuller blend of horns, funky bass, and drums. The sound was a more rock-based take on styles that had been showing up on late 60s soundtracks and 70s sound library albums – but which is served up here with a more straightforward punch that makes for plenty of guitar-based funky moments. A few tracks get a bit bluesier – in keeping with Korner's heritage – but the whole set grooves pretty darn nicely, and features 2 previously unreleased numbers! Titles include "Whole Lotta Love", "Boom Boom", "Salome", "Tap Turns On The Water", "The Band Played The Boogie", "Hang It On Me", "I Want You Back", "If I Never Sing Another Song", and "Primitive Love". Really beautiful work from the young Donovan – still yet to become the trippy popster that most folks know – but still pretty amazing here! The music definitely owes a lot to Bob Dylan – Donovan's playing harmonica and acoustic guitar, with just a bit of bass and drums behind him – but already, that vocal spirit that makes him so great is starting to shine – incredibly charming, especially on his original material – which shows a sense of playfulness that Dylan never would have touched! Bert Jansch & John RenbournBert & John ... CD
Transatlantic/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1966. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A hell of a collaboration between British legends Bert Jansch and John Renbourn – both working here together to completely redefine the sound of their music for the generation to come! This one album may well hold all the sense of subtle power and possibility that was about to flower in the Brit movement often known as "acid folk" – that reworking of older aesthetics with modern conceptions, and doing so mostly with their work on acoustic guitar – quite a feat, given the stripped-down instrumentation of the set! Bert sings a bit – in that incredible style of his – but the real attraction here is the guitar interplay, which is always fresh, never hokey, neither familiar American folk nor forced singer-songwriter backup material. Titles include a wonderful reworking of Charles Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" – plus "Red's Favourite", "Orlando", "Soho", "Piano Tune", "East Wind", "After The Dance", and "The Time Has Come". Status QuoPicturesque Matchstickable Messages From The Status Quo (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99
A seminal pop psych classic from the UK scene – served up here by a group that seem to borrow a bit of the energy from the late 60s Bee Gees at their trippiest, but who also really have a way for turning out a tune that has a very groovy vibe! Part of the credit might go to producer John Schroeder – a Brit sound library giant in his own right, and clearly able to make the sound of the records guitars, organ, and vocals sound incredibly groovy. But it's also clear that the group have plenty of great energy of their own – as they kept on going strongly, even after this early breakout record. Titles include their seminal "Pictures Of Matchstick Men", plus "Ice In The Sun", "Elizabeth Dreams", "Sunny Cellophane Sky", "Technicolor Dreams", "Black Veils Of Melancholy", "When My Mind Is Not Live", and "Spicks & Specks". Groovy cover, too, with the band sitting on a pile of matchbooks! LP, Vinyl record album

Music From Memory (Netherlands), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 2CD ... $22.99 35.98
A very cool collection that opens up who new territory for digging into the wonderful world of Japanese underground music – a set that features titles that were only issued on CD at the time, which might make these cuts even more obscure for those vinyl-centric folks looking into the music! The spirit here is often similar to some of the Japanese minimal music of a few years before – tuneful, but in an offbeat way – often electronic, but also very warm and organic – evolved a bit by some of the changes in technology as the 90s approach, but still with a really beautiful, special sort of sound – one that's so different than music from Anglo scenes at the time. Titles include "Lorang" by Jun Sato, "Unity" by Hiroki Ishiguro, "Harai" by Keisuke Sakurai, "Take No Michi" by Dream Dolphin, "A Tale" by Synagetic Voice Orchestra, "Ink" by Kina Tomoko, "Stop Me" by Tadahiko Yokogawa, "Phlanged Vortex" by Eiki Nonaka, "Yeelen" by Love Peace & Trance", "Retro Electric" by Keisuke Kikuchi, and "Mermaid" by Dido. A mad assortment of 60s girl pop from the UK – one that features a huge amount of material pulled from the vaults of Pye Records! Paradise Of Bachelors, Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy LP, 3CD & Book ... $26.99 32.99
Terry Allen has always been one of the most enigmatic figures in Texas music – but the work included here might well be some of his most compelling – even if it is a bit far from the straighter country of his start! Allen's always been a very narrative songwriter – and here, he takes that form one further – in a series of radio plays and longer audio narratives, most of which intersperse sung passages with spoken bits, sound effects, and beautiful music as well! These aren't any sort of sleepy, too-prosaic works – but instead, the sort of material that's always had us link Allen's music with the books of Barry Gifford or Barry Hannah – instantly evocative, and with a vision for storytelling that's completely captivating – a journey begun on his Juarez album, and really extended here. The special package features the first vinyl appearance of a few of these pieces – and 3CDs of music that contain the complete "Pedal Steel", "Torso Hell", "Bleeder", "Dugout", and "Reunion (A Return To Juarez)". Also features a great 28 page booklet on all the material! (Folk/Country, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

A genre-busting batch of tunes from Ambergris – a group with styles that range from Memphis soul, to New York Latin, to some of the heavier sides of the underground rock scene of the time! The ensemble features Latin Soul maestro Larry Harlow on piano, organ, and percussion – working with a rock-based group that still has lots of jazzy touches on their instrumentation. Steve Cropper produced the set – but in New York, not Memphis – and the whole thing explodes with a rich range of musical influences, all bubbling together in one pot! Includes the funky rock tracks "Soul Food" and "Forget It I Got It", plus "Endless Night", "Sunday Lady", "Home Groan", "Chocolate Pudding", and "Gotta Find Her". CD

Big Pink (South Korea), 1968. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A great group from the Texas scene of the late 60s – one that's maybe best known for giving the world the bass of Dusty Hill and drums of Frank Beard – who'd later go on to form ZZ Top with Billy Gibbons – but a combo who are more than great enough on their own! Yes, there's plenty of blues inspiration in the music – but the sound is every bit as trippy as the cover – and Rocky Hill works in some very sharp, very complex guitar lines throughout – already outpacing his influences by a lot, as the group come across with a sound that's steeped in the best Texas psych modes of the time! We don't know much about the setting for the record, but the production and presentation are top-shelf – maybe even better than the group's following record on Uni – and titles include "Mercury Blues", "Fugue For Lady Cheriff", "It's Gone", "Keep My Heart In A Rage", "Melted By Snow", "All I Saw Was You", and a great trippy remake of "If I Were A Carpenter". Warner/Now Sounds (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
Mindblowing music from The Association – a heady double-length package that features every single the group ever cut for the Valiant and Warner Brothers label – which together make for an amazing evolution in sound! Although best remembered for their few soft rock hits, The Association were a hell of a group who never stopped growing back in the 60s – from sublime folksy harmonies at the start, to more complicated baroque pop as years went on, to some psych elements, and even a return to rootsier sounds they never had in the first place – always delivered with qualities that were head and shoulders above most of their contemporaries – and perfectly put together in the best LA studio styles, with help from giants like Curt Boettcher, Gary Paxton, Bones Howe, and others. The group also became quite skilled in the studio themselves – as you'll hear in the book's copious notes and comments from members themselves – all a perfect package for a set that features 37 mighty tunes that include "Six Man Band", "Goodbye Columbus", "Like Always", "No Fair At All", "Standing Still", "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies", "Looking Glass", "Birthday Morning", "Makes Me Cry", "PF Sloan", "Just About The Same", "Traveler's Guide", "I Am Up For Europe", "Hear In Here",a nd "Forty Times" – not to mention some bigger hits! Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 19.98
The collected work of a mighty trippy group from the Indian scene – a psychedelic combo who worked in the 70s, but who had the same sort of edge you'd hear from the American and British scenes of the late 60s! In truth, there's a fair bit of Anglo influence going on in the music – not just in the English language lyrics, but also in the way the guitars come together with stretched-out, soaring brilliance – flying eight miles high to the sky in a heady brew of freak and fuzz – and turning this approach to some surprising soundtrack numbers too! Production is perfect for the band's vibe – often spacing things out in a really cool way – with some slightly primitive modes that also remind us of the South American psych scene of a few years before. Now Again did a brilliant job with the package – bringing together a host of the group's best tracks from the mid 70s, and a bonus 20 page booklet with full notes on the group, and some very cool photos and ephemera. The whole thing even features a few unreleased numbers – and titles include "Obsession 77", "Sunshine Day", "Butterfly Version 1", "Theme From The Godfather", "Theme From The Fox", "Windmills Of Your Mind", "Booboo Lullaby", "Man You're Not Number One", "Travel On", "Gesthemene", and "Foxy Lady". Turkuola/Pharaway Sounds (Spain), 1979. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
Selda packs a heck of a punch on this late 70s set – a record that's still got all the wonderful elements of her previous three albums – that unique mix of folksy roots, protest themes, and nicely trippy production! Selda's holding an electrified version of the baglama on the front cover – and the instrument really sounds great on the tracks throughout – piercing with a punctuated sound that's almost like an electric sitar, but a more more straightforward – a perfect accompaniment to the rich, flowing lines of Selda's vocals. None of the tunes are in English, but there's a really universal appeal to the music – as Selda's the kind of singer that's so expressive, one hardly needs to know the lyrics to get the meaning of her tunes. Titles include "Ona Don", "Hele Yar", "Ayaginda Kundura", "Hizir Pasa", "Cendarme", "Izin Ize Benzemiyor", and "Sorsunlar Beni". CD

Silva Screen (UK), Late 50s. Used ... $11.99
Really early sounds from the great John Barry – a huge amount of tracks recorded with his combo for the Drumbeat TV show in the UK! The program had a strong focus on the emerging rock and roll sounds of the late 50s – and the John Barry Seven were a perfect group to provide musical accompaniment – professional enough to handle the gig in just the right way, but youthful enough to come up with plenty of sharp-edged sounds! The instrumentation's often heavy on guitar, but features some trumpet lines from Barry too – and although the set features some instrumentals by the group, there's also a lot of vocal numbers – with singers who include Derry Hart, Adam Faith, Bob Miller, Sylvia Sands, Roy Young, Vince Eager, and others. 40 tracks in all – including "Mad Mab", "Bees Knees", "Don't Leave Me", "Slippin & Slidin", "Rockin Sandy", "Get Happy", "Italian Style", "Beatnik", "Catwalk", "I Go Ape", "Shame On You Miss Johnson", and "Buzzin". Robbie BashoBashovia (Falconer's Arm Vols 1 & 2/Song Of The Stallion) ... CD
Takoma, 1967/1968. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A great collection of tracks from three important early albums from Robbie Basho – all issued on Takoma Records, under the guidance of John Fahey – an early champion of Basho, who was an artist who was every bit a revolutionary acoustic player as his mentor! Basho a guitarist who's often known as a contemporary of John Fahey – but one that we might well put in an entirely different class altogether! The music here is mostly solo guitar – on 12-string and standard acoustic guitar – and Basho has this sublime way of spinning out these long, almost modal lines – clearly inspired a bit by Indian music, given his comments in the notes – but with a result that's very much his own, and which has this sonic sensibility that's years ahead of his time! If you dig Fahey or Sandy Bull, you'll find plenty to dig here too – but there's also elements of Basho's late 60s performance that wouldn't turn up until decades later in the playing and phrasing of others. There's a bit of vocalization on a few numbers – a strange style that's less singing than channeling the planet – and titles include "The Falconer's Arm", "Lost Lagoon Suite", "Song Of The Snowy Ranges", "Pasha", "The Haji", "Khatum", and "Pavan Hindustan". Robbie BashoVenus In Cancer ... LP
Blue Thumb/Traffic, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99 24.98
One of the wildest albums ever from the great Robbie Basho – as you might guess from the cover! Basho first made waves with his solo guitar work (and a bit of vocalizations) for the Takoma label, during the early years of John Fahey – but as the 60s ended, Robbie had more of a spiritual awakening – which really changed up certain aspects of his music. The set's still got some beautiful long-spun guitar passages – acoustic work that makes Basho maybe an even closer tie to Sandy Bull than Fahey – but Robbie also sings a bit too, in this weirdly trilling voice that almost feels as if it's been pulled from some 15th century pagan culture, but infused with a new missionary spirit. Most of the set is instrumental, but these vocal moments are wonderfully haunting too – and titles include "Venus In Cancer", "Eagle Sails The Blue Diamond Waters", "Kowaka D'Amour", "Song For The Queen", "Cathedrals Et Fleur De Lis", and "Wine Song (Sweet Wine Of Love)". Capitol/EMI, 1968. Used ... $8.99
Beach Boys karaoke – or kind of a "music minus one" album – but whatever the case, the set's a pretty unique outing in the field of 60s pop! The record's exactly what the title promises – a "stack o tracks" from the group's earlier records – rhythm parts, some instrumental bits – all laid out with key guitar parts missing and no vocals at all – so that you can pick up your instrument and play along with the record – and maybe get your friends to harmonize too! At the time, the approach seemed somewhat crazy – but after spending decades tracking down Smile-era bootlegs of Brian Wilson studio tracks just like this, the record's got a surprising sort of brilliance – almost as if Brian had guessed there's be a market for his "studio progress" sort of material. Titles include "Darlin", "Salt Lake City", "Wild Honey", "Catch A Wave", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "Surfer Girl", "God Only Knows", "Little Honda", and "Let Him Run Wild". CD

Pure brilliance from start to finish – especially the second side of the record, which has a continuous run of tunes that's very unique – and still completely sublime all these many years later! The album shows the fracturing ideas of the group, but crafted together with a unity you won't find on The White Album or Let It Be – still a way of making it all gel together beautifully, as the fab four stretch their wings to find new ways of being. Added instrumentation is used wonderfully – never overdone, but with orchestral passages that can really hammer home the best musical moments – and titles include "I Want You", "Because", "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Golden Slumbers", "The End", "Her Majesty", "Polythene Pam", and "Sun King".
