✨✧ Roxy MusicCountry Life ... LP
EG, 1974. Near Mint- ... $34.99
The fourth album from Roxy Music – and quite possibly the best to date! The album has the group moving strongly past the Eno years, into a tighter framework that still contains many of the darker themes of earlier records. Ferry's lead vocals are incredibly majestic – rising to heights to match the European greats of years past who were his inspiration – and the group's tight blend of reeds, guitar, and moody keyboards gives the whole album an off-kilter sense of instrumentation that really sets it apart from the pack. There's an artfulness here that's never overdone, and the whole thing comes together with a magic that's impossible to describe, but which is Roxy at their best. Titles include "Out Of The Blue", "The Thrill Of It All", "Three & Nine", "Triptych", "Casanova", and "Prairie Rose". LP, Vinyl record album

Roxy MusicRoxy Music (2CD expanded edition) ... CD
Capitol, 1972. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 21.98
A mindblowing debut from Roxy Music – a record that took the world by storm in the 70s, and which is still pretty darn revolutionary all these many years later! Sure, the cover looks a bit cheesy and trashy, but the core of the music is amazing – this blistering array of guitars, electronics, and saxophone – all honed into songs that provide the perfect setting for the haunting vocals of Bryan Ferry! If you only know these guys from their later, softer work, you'll be quite surprised here – as the saxes by Andy Mackay are woven right in alongside the guitar of Phil Manzanera, and the album's laced with weird electronic and tape touches from Brian Eno. Peter Sinfield produced – as yet another mighty talent that was part of the proceedings – and titles include "Re-make/Re-Model", "Ladytron", "If There Is Something", "HB", "The Bob", "Chance Meeting", "Would You Believe", "Sea Breezes", and "Bitters End". Amazing 2CD expanded edition comes in a book-like cover, with lots of pages of notes – and CD 2 features 14 more bonus tracks – Peel Sessions recordings of "Virginia Plain", "Sea Breezes", "Remake/Remodel", "The Bob", "Would You Believe", "2HB", "Ladytron", and "Chance Meeting" – plus a live BBC In Concert Performance from March 8, 1972 – with performances of five more tracks! ✨✧ Thomas Bartlett & Nico MuhlyPeter Pears – Balinese Ceremonial Music ... CD
Nonesuch, 2018. Used ... $6.99
An interesting little album – a set that's part indie, and part a surprisingly great tribute to the music of the Indonesian gamelan – extrapolated through the compositions of Colin McPhee, who was one of the first to transcribe the sound of the percussive ensemble for the piano! The duo of Nico Muhly and Thomas Bartlett take McPhee's music for inspiration – and serve up a few especially great tracks that recreate gamelan energy on piano, vibes, and a small bit of strings – sometimes instrumental, sometimes with light breathy vocals that make a really great combination with the music. Other moments are more dreamy and airy, but equally beautiful in their own sort of way – and titles include "Gambangan", "Festina", "Grendel", "Pemoengkah", "Balthasar", "Eusebius", "Selenite", and "Taboeh Teloe". Studio Mule (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $31.99
A set that's hardly background at all – as the tracks here have a lively, forward sort of energy that reminds us of our favorite post-punk experiments from the British and German scenes at the start of the 70s – done with a darkness that really resonates with the album's cover image too! There's hardly any vocals at all on the songs – other than muted, abstracted lyrics that are buried under brooding basslines, echoey drums, and fuzzy work on guitar and keyboards – all with a moody Factory Records sort of vibe – and by that, we mean Factory circa 1980, not the later sunnier years. Titles include "Neo Dancer", "And", "Repeat", "Membership Card", "Romantic Romance", and "Recovery Room". LP, Vinyl record album

ChasePure Music/Chase ... CD
Epic/Vocalion (UK), 1971/1974. New Copy ... $18.99
A pair of albums from Chase – one of the hippest jazz rock combos of the 70s! The self-titled Chase album first burned onto the market in 1971 – and it's a great distillation of a groove that was bubbling around in various other segments at the time – some of the tighter big band rhythms of the late 60s, as you might find in the work of Maynard Ferguson or Woody Herman – mixed with the hipper rhythms from the rockish underground, particularly in the work of Blood Sweat & Tears or Chicago. Chase is a fair bit jazzier than both of those groups – as they often put the horns more upfront than the vocals – although most numbers do have some sort of vocals as well. Instrumentation is heavy on trumpets – which come together in blasting, blaring groove, even despite the smaller size of the combo – and Phil Porter lays down some great keyboard lines that really help some of the best tracks cook nicely. Titles include "Handbags & Gladrags", "Livin In Heat", "Open Up Wide", "Hello Groceries", "Boys & Girls Together", and "Invitation To A River". Ennea is a jazz rock classic that still sounds pretty darn tasty today – forged on the heels of Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears, but with a sound that's leaner and meaner! The group's led by trumpeter Bill Chase – hence their name – and features lead vocals by GG Shinn and Terry Richards, both in a style that's got the same blue-eyed jazz soul overtones as that used by the groups mentioned above. The real strength of the tracks, though, is their jazzy backings – horn-heavy, as you'd expect, and hitting some great riffs and licks on the album's side-long title "suite", which features many instrumental passages. Titles include "Hades", "Aphrodite (parts 1 & 2)", "Zeus", "Poseidon", "Cronus", "It Won't Be Long", "I Can Feel It", and "Night". CD

Country Joe & The FishElectric Music For The Mind & Body ... LP
Vanguard, 1967. Very Good- ... $12.99
A seminal set from Country Joe & The Fish – one of those albums that brought the new psychedelic sound strongly into the mainstream – but all without softening up or commercializing it at all! There's still a very sharp edge to the record – mean organ lines, fuzzy guitar, and lots of cool production that makes the sounds weirder and more watery than before – even the vocals, which have this edge that nobody would ever refer to as Sunshine Pop! In a way, the whole set's as sinister as any of the most groundbreaking albums on Elektra from the time – and definitely shows that both Vanguard and the group were at the forefront of the new psych recording scene. Titles include "Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine", "Super Bird", "Death Sound", "Sad And Lonely Times", "The Masked Marauder", "Grace", and "Bass Strings". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dinosaur L (Arthur Russell)24 24 Music ... CD
Sleeping Bag, 1981. Used ... $7.99
An incredible full album from Dinosaur L – the legendary New York dancefloor project of Arthur Russell! The group's a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! The tracks on the original set were simply numbered – "1", "2", "3", and so on – and come across almost as free-jamming instrumentals – but this reissue appends the songs with their 12" titles, so "#1" gets parenthetically entitled "You're Gonna Be Clean On Your Bean" and "#5" as "Go Bang!", plus this disc adds several 12" versions that were not on the original LP release, like Francois K's mix of 'Go Bang!" and Larry Levan's mix of "In The Corn Belt". Totally great stuff – as experimental as it is funky! (Soul, Rock) CD

Brian EnoAmbient 1 – Music For Airports ... LP
EG, 1978. Near Mint- ... $49.99
A landmark moment – both for Brian Eno, and for experimental music in general! Although Eno began his solo run with some searing, guitar-heavy records that were even wilder than his early work with Roxy Music – he also began experimenting with more sensitive aspects of sound on albums like Another Green World and Before & After Science – an approach he takes here to the farthest degree, by opening up himself and creating a whole new genre of ambient music in the process! Gone are the raspy, sometimes nasty vocals – and in their place is virtually nothing – just beautifully open music that uses scores that are somewhat cyclical – but at a pace that's very different than the minimalism of the period – and maybe even more minimal too. The record features four long tracks, one with piano by Robert Wyatt – really beautiful stuff, like some strange dark sonic crystal that fell out of the skies years ago, and which still remains a mystery to all ears that stumble upon it! Brian EnoDiscreet Music (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Obscure/Astralwerks, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! LP, Vinyl record album

A compilation LP of sorts – though at the time of its release most of this material had not been heard in this form! The album's more or less part of the "Ambient" series Eno had started that year with Music For Airports – and it's presented with similarly simple, elegant packaging – a cool divergence from the more striking Eno of a few years before. The set is made up of various bits, record either exclusively for film use, or that in one way or another found their way into films – and contains mostly short tunes, some thematic, others purely sonic wallpaper, but always compelling! 18 tracks, including "M386", "Aragon", "Two Rapid Formations", "Slow Water", "Sparrowfall", "Evenings In Dense Fog", "A Measured Room", "Strange Light", and "Final Sunset". Rhino, 1991. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
Great music from the second season of Twin Peaks – and a continuing illustration of the power of Angelo Baldamenti's music for the show! The strength of these simple themes and tunes is clear right from the get-go – as Angelo serves things up in a mode that's subtle, but still filled with the dark mystery that made the show so great – and all these many years later, there's a surprisingly timeless feel to the sound of the work, given that Baldamenti chose to use better keyboards and piano than the usual early 90s styles – plus a fair bit of acoustic instrumentation with a jazzy undercurrent as well. The package is a bit heavier on photos than notes, so we're not sure of the exact placement of all these cuts – but we can say that the CD features 22 tracks that include "Shelly", "Love Theme Intro", "I'm Hurt Bad", "Cop Beat", "Barbershop", "Harold's Theme", and "Packard's Vibration". Verve, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $29.99
A very tripped-out set of meditation music – issued by Verve in the late 60s, and arguably even more spacey and atmospheric than some of Tony Scott's similar records for the label at the time! Malachi is actually John Morgan Newbern – working here in a spare setting to capture the "evening vibrations" of a single night in 1966 – served up through instrumentation that includes low-end percussion, acoustic guitar, and a fair bit of Jew's harp – played by Steve Cunningham (of Red Crayola fame), but drifting out slowly over the longer tracks in the set. The album's an early example of the extremes that 60s labels used to address the growing interest in Eastern ideals at the time – and it's much less commercial than some of the more gimmicky sessions of the decade. El (UK), Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A really cool little package – one that brings space age sounds from both the world of mainstream pop, and the farther reaches of electronic music composition in the postwar years! The core of CD1 is the groundbreaking album I Hear A New World by Joe Meek – presented here both in the "restored" version that was first issued by RPM in 1991, and the original unreleased tapes from 1960. The whole record is like The Ventures meeting space aliens – and Joe Meek composed and conceived the incredible 60s session of strange space-age instrumentals – one that mixes instrumental surf-flavored guitars with crazy sound effects and production techniques, for an out-of-this-world batch of tracks that's like nothing else we can think of! Tracks include "Glob Waterfall", "I Hear A New World", "Orbit Around The Moon", "March Of The Dribcots", and "Valley Of The Saroos". CD1 also features 11 more weird electronic tracks from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop – and from Ray Cathode. Then CD2 and CD3 move into the darker corners of experimental electronics and musique concrete – with works that include "Dripsody" by Hugh Le Caine, "Syncopation" by Tom Dissevelt, "Timbres Durees" by Olivier Messiaen, "Poeme Electronique" by Edgard Varese, "The Innocents" by Daphne Oram, "Fontana Mix" by John Cage, "Visage V (parts 1, 2, & 3)" by Luc Ferrari, "Musica Su Due Dimensioni" by Bruno Maderna, "Deux Etudes De Musique Concrete For Magnetic Tape" by Pierre Boulez, "Fantasy In Space" by Otto Luening, and "Piece For Tape Recorder" by Vladimir Ussachevsky. Larry Page was a big figure in the British music scene of the 60s – manager of the Kinks, and a growing force in record production too – so much so, he decided to put himself in the limelight as the leader of this all-instrumental set of songs by his most famous group! Ray Davies arranged all the tunes, and the readings follow pretty closely to the structure of original Kinks tunes – but shift things up with the instruments used – adding in more horns, shifting a keyboard for a guitar, or vice versa – and filling up the space in the middle to cover up the absence of the vocals! The set is also noteworthy for a bit of guitar by a young Jimmy Page – and titles include "One Fine Day", "Come On Now", "Tired Of Waiting For You", "Don't Ever Change", "You Really Got Me", "Just Can't Go To Sleep", "Everybody's Gonna Be Happy", and "All Day & All Of The Night". A fantastic early side of work from 70s superstar Bob Seger – and one that comes as quite a surprise, compared to his hits! This early material is really raw, gritty, and definitely shows Bob's roots in the same Detroit scene that was changing the worlds of both soul and rock in the late 60s – often with groups that had an equal emphasis on both sides of the spectrum! In fact, there's a surprisingly strong current of soul that runs through many of these cuts – a romping energy that really matches the freakier, fuzzier touches of the instrumentation – all with results that will have you maybe thinking about Bob in a whole new way. Some of the modes recall the best early Mitch Ryder material, but often with a trippier sort of vibe – and although the tracks came out as singles on the Cameo label in the mid 60s, this is the first full album ever issued of the material. Titles include "Sock It To Me Santa", "Heavy Music (parts 1 & 2)", "Chain Smokin", "Persecution Smith", "Vagrant Winter", "East Side Story", "Very Few", and "Florida Time". LP, Vinyl record album

Spotnicks/Russ Garcia/Ron GoodwinOut Of This World (Music In Orbit/Fantastica) ... CD
El (UK), Mid 50s. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
Space age pop galore – from a trio of very groovy sources! The Spotnicks start out the set with three cool guitar instrumentals – "Telstar", "Moonshot", and "Rocket Man" – done in their great blend of Ventures guitar modes and offbeat Joe Meek production styles – with a sound that's years ahead of its time! Next is the excellent album Out Of This World – from Brit arranger Ron Goodwin, with production by the legendary George Martin! The album was billed as Music In Orbit here in the US – and is a wonderful album of space-age easy listening! The album features no electronics, but Goodwin's use of soaring strings is somewhere between the Fantastic Planet soundtrack and some of the later moogy albums in the 60s. Scoring is richly sophisticated, with a complicated approach to the material that would befit a high-end 50s sci-fi soundtrack – made even better by the excellent cover, which features a beautiful purple painting of a rocket blasting off of a planet in space. The whole thing's perhaps a bit more romantic than spooky, but the mood changes nicely from track to track to keep things fresh. Titles include "The Moon", "The Venus Waltz", "Mercury Gets The Message", "The Sun", "Jumping Jupiter", and "Martians On Parade". Last up is Russ Garcia's Fantastica – one of the space-age bachelor pad electronic classics! Russ Garcia was mostly a jazz arranger in his day – but he does a good job of scoring some moody sci-fi tracks for this set – mixing full orchestrations with some great electronics handled by Ted Keep, all in a format that replicates a journey through the universe – with stops at lots of unusual galaxies along the way! The album's got a great mix of complicated strings and woodwinds, which offset the spooky electronics nicely – and although playful, the record also represents some of Garcia's most serious scoring on record. Titles include "Into Space", "Nova", "Monster's Of Jupiter", "Red Sands Of Mars", and "Moon Rise". (Now Sound, Rock) CD

Sire, 1979. Used ... $4.99
A really tremendous album from The Talking Heads – and a set that moves far past their already-great early records, to really show a rhythmic complexity we never would have expected! Brian Eno is helping the group in the studio again here, and the record really shows both David Byrne and Eno's late 70s fascination with global rhythms – elements that are often used in spare, simple little ways to really help inflect the tunes with a playful imagination that goes way beyond the colder post-punk and new wave of most of their contemporaries! The balance of previous aesthetics with these new grooves is wonderful – heard to great effect on the classic club cut "I Zimbra" – but brewing up strongly underneath on gems that include "Mind", "Paper", "Cities", "Life During Wartime", "Memories Can't Wait", "Air", "Heaven", "Animals", "Electric Guitar", and "Drugs". Third Ear BandThird Ear Band's Music From Macbeth (with bonus tracks) ... CD
EMI/Esoteric (UK), 1972. New Copy ... $13.99
Shakespeare never sounded so compelling before – given a very cool soundtrack by the Third Ear Band, who were moved to work on this project in collaboration with director Roman Polanski! The music is fantastic away from the film – very different than some of the group's earlier records, and a lot more eerie too – as some of their usual string and reed elements almost take on an electronic vibe in the process! Most tracks are very spacious and open, with the violin and oboe crafting some especially sharp, angular sounds – almost as if the group were let loose in some sort of analogue electronic studio. Titles include "The Beach", "The Banquet", "Dagger & Death", "Bear Baiting", "Groom's Dance", "Prophetics", and "Wicca Way". CD features three bonus tracks from the group's initial foray into the studio for this music! CD

TullySea Of Joy – Music From The Film By Paul Witzig ... LP
Harvest (Australia), 1970. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Deeply introspective music penned for a 1970 Australian surf film – tracks that have a grounding in instrumental rock, but which also show plenty of trance-like and meditative modes as well! The titles are relatively short, but spin out with an open-ended quality that's almost like that of much longer instrumental jams – built up out of a spare and shifting assemblage of elements that include organ, flute, clarinet, piano, gong, and guitar – plus a bit of softly-sung vocals on a few numbers. There's an almost folk-like fragility to some of the tunes, but others have a more spacious feel that fits their use in a second-generation surf film nicely. Titles include "Cat Clarinet Mit Orgel", "Follow Me", "Pseudo Tragic Dramatic", "Sea Of Joy", "Thank You", "Softly Softly", "Syndrome", and "Down To The Sea". Bear Family (Germany), 1940s/1950s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 10CD ... $189.99 249.99
An amazing tribute to the Bakersfield scene – one that finally gives the California city the same sort of attention that we usually see in sets dedicated to Nashville! Bakersfield is well-known as the home of Merle Haggard and Buck Owens, but the city's got a long legacy of influencing country music for decades – a good deal of which is presented here, in a package that brings together loads of rare Cali country singles that we never would have heard otherwise, along with well-chosen cuts from some of its stars, and a fair bit of rare and unissued material too! At the center of the set is a huge hardcover book by Scott Bomar – hardcover, 12" square, and with 224 full color pages of notes and images on the genius of Bakersfield, and what made it such a unique country music spot. The 10 CDs feature nearly 300 songs in all – one disc of which is all rare live and unissued material – and in addition to work by Buck and Merle, the set features tracks by Wayne Morris, Jerry Cornelius, Vancie & Rita, Georgia Lynn, Kenny Hays, Tommy Lewis, Rollie Webber, Johnny Barnette, Bonnie Owens, Bobby Durham, George Latta, Owen Charles, Larry Daniels, Gene Moles, Al Brumley, Bill Handy, Leo Stephens, Faye Hardin, Tom Tall, Cliff Crofford, Kenny Vernon, Rose Lee Maphis, Oscar Whittington, Foyle Holley, Dick Curless, Red Simpson, Gary Paxton, Jim Ward, and many many more! Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 5CD ... $39.99
The northern side of the UK scene finally gets its due – all with a sound that's a lot more exciting than the spare landscape pictured on the cover! The work is all from Scotland, and it's hardly the music of kilts and bagpipes – because nearly all these tracks had a huge influence on the British music scene down south – the kind of tracks that won over listeners on the John Peel Show, got rave reviews in NME and Melody Maker, and forever helped change the style at just about every step of the way from the punk years onwards! The package is a huge treasure trove of great sounds – as musically fantastic as it is a geographical marker – and honestly, we had no idea that so many of these artists were Scottish – as we usually just think of a few key 80s groups when we try to picture that scene. Instead, the book-like package has plenty of knowledge, notes, and pictures to offer – in support of 115 tracks by artists who run the gamut from early punk, through post-punk, power pop, nouveau psych, C86 charmers, Creation Records fuzz, and some of the new grooves that exploded at the end of the 80s. Includes work by The Zips, Skids, Subs, PVC, Rezillos, Jesus & Mary Chain, Del Amitri, Primal Scream, Meat Whiplash, Blood Uncles, Pastels, Altered Images, Prats, Josef K, Cocteau Twins, The Orchids, Vaselines, Shamen, Mackenzies, Baby Lemonade, Bachelor Pad, Dog Faced Hermans, Cindytalk, Strawberry Switchblade, Aztec Camera, Biff Bang Pow, Boots For Dancing, Fire Engines, Thomas Leer, The Associates, Scars, TV 21, Ales Fergusson, Jasmine Minks, and lots lots more! B- Music/Finders Keepers, Late 60s. Used ... $19.99
The first-ever release of some incredible funky folk tunes from vocalist Susan Christie – originally recorded as demos in the years before her work at Columbia Records, and arguably even better than those classic singles! Backings here are by John Hill, who inflects Susan's folksy style with a heavier undercurrent – one that's subtly funky at the best moments, and which also pushes fuller strings and more baroque instrumentation into the mix – all in a way that almost sounds like David Axlerod might, had he started making folk records! Titles include the amazing 9 minute "Yesterday, Where's My Mind" – a funky mini-suite that's worth the price of the record alone – plus "Paint A Lady", "Rainy Day", "Ghost Riders In The Sky", "Echo In Your Mind", "When Love Comes", and "For The Love Of A Soldier". Brother Music (Denmark), 1981. New Copy ... $15.99
The first album from Laid Back – the Danish duo who would soon dominate the world of breakdance with their electro-pop groove! This set has Laid Back sounding maybe a bit more rock at the core, but still with plenty of electronic touches around the edge – maybe a catchier version of DAF in the mid 80s, or a group that's traveling in the same pop territory as Peter Schilling or Nena – right down to their use of English language lyrics in the set! Those lyrics often have a nice accent, though – which also keeps things interesting – on titles that include "Maybe I'm Crazy", "China Girl", "Keep On Moving", "Take Me Home", "Roger", "Night Train Boogie", and "Man From The Moon". CD features a number of bonus tracks from singles – including "Walk On", "New Feeling", and some other mixes too. (Soul, Rock) CD

Terry Riley's masterpiece, and an enduring classic that never grows old – and which never lapses into the hippy dippyness of some of his other work! The piece features 53 short musical passages, played in an order defined by the players, in minimal repetition, moving in and out of phase synchronicity – ever shifting, turning, and drifting – all to create a remarkable tapestry of sound, texture, and melody. This recording of the work is still the best, and it was produced with excellent care by David Behrman, as part of Columbia's great "music of our time" series. Massively heavy sounds from A Bolha – a Brazilian group who were previously known as The Bubbles, and backed up Gal Costa during the Tropicalia years – but who work here in a fuzzy, bassy groove that's totally great – definitely an heir to the headier sounds of the UK scene at the start of the 70s! The guitars are definitely in full force here, but the basslines drive things along strongly too – echoing some of the Peruvian sounds of the time, but with a bit more Brazilian sophistication – and definitely a musical echo of lessons learned during Tropicalia, even though the set's a fully instrumental one. Organ also figures in the mix too – and titles include "Bye My Friend", "Razao De Existir", "Um Passo A Frente", "A Esfera", and "Neste Rock Forever". A long-overdue full length album from Ace Of Cups – a really unusual female group from the Bay Area scene of the late 60s – but one who never hit the heights of their bigger San Francisco contemporaries! The girls have this really great look on the back – kind of flower power, but with a bit more charm – a quality that comes through in the music, with is often more garagey than trippy – but which also has a way of putting forth female vocals and honest ideas that might not flourish this strongly for similar groups until the post-punk years. That approach makes the whole thing a truly timeless collection of tracks – of the sort that maybe resonate more strongly today than they did back in the 60s. Titles include "Music", "Glue", "Taste Of One", "Stones", "Pretty Boy", "Waller Street Blues", "Simplicity", and a great version of "Afro Blue". LP, Vinyl record album

Overlooked later work from America – not the huge AM radio hits from the time when the group was a trio, and produced by George Martin – but instead, material from a point when they'd trimmed down to a duo, and really found a great way to move their music forward! The approach here still has all the harmonic interplay of before, and as the albums move on, older AOR modes get shed for some slightly more contemporary styles – but still with that kind of golden glow that always made the America approach a lot stronger than most of their contemporaries! Songs are nicely understated, as is the production – and if, like us, you're a fan of the group with a love that goes way deeper than the hits, then you'll find plenty to love here. The package features six full albums, each in original album-styled sleeves – with the releases Silent Letter, Alibi, View From The Ground, Your Move, Perspective, and In Concert. CD

An overstuffed album of early greatness – served up with a classic image of the Fab Four on the cover! The tunes are a mix of Lennon/McCartney originals and American soul and rock numbers that are reinterpreted wonderfully by the group – in ways that perfectly show why, unlike most of their contemporaries, The Beatles weren't just trying for slavish imitation of American authenticity – and instead were already taking off with new ideas inspired by the music! Titles include "Please Please Me", "Love Me Do", "Misery", "Anna", "I Saw Her Standing There", "Boys", "Baby IT's You", "Do You Want To Know A Secret", "Twist & Shout", "A Taste Of Honey", and "Chains". Chuck BerryChuck Berry/More Chuck Berry ... CD
Chess/BGO (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A double-helping of Chuck Berry brilliance from his early years on Chess Records – music that always has way way more to offer than you might think! Sure, some of Chuck's hits are very familiar – and sure, the man could later be a bit of a parody of himself – but there's no denying the power of this early material, and the revolutionary way Chuck had of playing guitar – rooted in blues, paving the way to rock, and also opening the door to lots more funky soul in years to come! The guitar work alone is worth the price of admission, but the songs and vocals are wonderful too – and the CD features 26 titles that include "Down The Road A Piece", "Mad Lad", "Sweet Little Rock & Roller", "Anthony Boy", "Little Queenie", "Oh Baby Doll", "Confessin The Blues", "Almost Grown", "Jo Jo Gunne", "Wee Wee Hours", "Too Much Monkey Business", and "Brown Eyed Handsome Man". Chess, Early 60s. Very Good ... $14.99
The title's certainly straightforward and to the point – but then again, there's not a lot to say about this one except that it's pure Chuck Berry all the way through! The album may well be one of Chuck's most -hit filled, as it's overflowing with classics like "Rock & Roll Music", "Maybellene", "Roll Over Beethoven", "Johnny B Goode", and "Back In The USA" – but it also includes some other numbers like "Let It Rock", "Come On", and "Round & Round". Chuck BerryOne Dozen Berrys/Juke Box Hits ... CD
BGO (UK), 1958/1960. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Two classic Chess albums from Chuck Berry – issued here on a single CD! First up is One Dozen Berrys – the fresh fruits of the labors of a young Chuck Berry – heard here at his raw, early best! The sound here is stunning – a version of Chuck that gets way past any oldies cliches – and which reminds us that at the start, his music was coming from the same Chess Records fount as Bo Diddley's riffing guitar and Muddy Waters' Chicago blues! The tunes all work together perfectly – and the familiar numbers fit in perfectly with overlooked gems that really make the album great – especially when Chuck's guitar is really given a chance to step out and solo. Titles include "La Juanda", "Sweet Little Sixteen", "It Don't Take But A Few Minutes", "Rock & Roll Music", and "Low Feeling". Juke Box Hits is way more than a "hits" album – as it's filled with some great obscure material that always gets eclipsed by Chuck's big hits. Despite the idea that these would be "new jukebox hits", the material has an approach that was probably a bit too hard for radio, but that's ok with us! Titles include "13 Question Method", "Don't You Lie To Me", "The Way It Was Before", "Away From You", "I'm Talking About You", and "Stop & Listen". (Soul, Rock) CD

Big Star#1 Record ... LP
Ardent/Craft, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... On February 7, 2020
The amazing first album from Big Star – a set that came out of nowhere, made hardly a ripple on the charts, yet went onto crash in big waves of sound for generations to come! The style here is unlike thing else before – hardly what you'd expect from the group's Memphis roots or Alex Chilton's previous performances – yet the group's music has become a generation-defining sound in the way it blends southern inflections with harder rock influences, and a lean, gritty quality that's arguably in a late 70s space between punk and power pop. Every element is wonderful – guitars that are powerful, but never indulgent – vocals that are moving, but never overly emotive – and a balance between sensitive and searing moments that even The Replacements could never hope to match. A landmark all the way through – with tracks that include "Feel", "Ballad Of El Goodo", "In The Street", "The India Song", "When My Baby's Beside Me", "Give Me Another Chance", "Don't Lie To Me", "Thirteen", "Watch The Sunrise", and "Try Again". Birds Of A FeatherBirds Of A Feather – The Page One Recordings (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Page One/RPM (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
An album that's maybe best remembered for its connection with the world of the young Elton John – as the man himself plays piano on the record, and also contributed a number of songs – but a set that's also a standout achievement from sisters Doreen and Irene Chanter! The duo are British, but sing together in a way that clearly draws a lot of inspiration from southern soul – that version of the music that you'd find refracted through a British prism on records like Honky Chateau or Tumbleweed Connection – but coming through nicely in the girls' own songs too. Production is great – nicely understated, even when full – and the main focus is on the vocals, which are surprisingly soulful throughout. Titles include "Take Me To The Pilot", "Border Song", "Leaving The Ghetto", "Country Comfort", "All God's Children Got Soul", "One More Time", "Take The World", "Bad Side Of The Moon", and a cool cover of "Gimme Shelter" that's almost got a Motown vibe! CD features two bonus tracks – "Blacksmith Blues" and "Sing My Song & Pray". CD

Birthday PartyPrayers On Fire ... LP
Missing Link, 1980. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Ferocious, darkness-tinged postpunk from The Birthday Party! The caterwauling and howling fervor here is uber-influential to a lot darker indie/noise rock to come later in the decade. The band known by many for being Nick Cave's launching pad, but deserves many more props for the uncompromising genius they churned out in their time! Honking sax and churning organ suggest a diseased take on old blues & R&B, but the raucous energy and manic, frighteningly spat poetry is wholly unlike anything else at the time. Includes "Zoo Music Girl", "Cry", "Caper", "Nick The Stripper", "King Ink", "A Dead Song", "Yard" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Cilla BlackCilla/In My Life (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Parlophone/SFE (UK), 1965/1974. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
Two key albums from England's legendary Cilla Black – back to back in a single set, and with 26 bonus tracks too! First up is the amazing 1965 debut, Cilla – a record that maybe draws even more heavily on American soul music than some of Dusty Springfield's early work – all given some impeccable handling in the studio by arranger Johnny Scott, with a bit of help from Johnny Spence, and the record's producer, George Martin. Tunes are a great blend of American pop tracks and more off-beat numbers – done in that strangely syncopated mode that always provided a perfect counterpoint for Cilla's vocals – percolating the tracks wonderfully, and keeping things nice and clean, in a way that you don't always find in her later records. Titles include "Baby It's You", "Goin Out Of My Head", "Every Little Bit Hurts", "This Empty Place", "Come To Me", "Dancing In The Street", and "Whatcha Gonna Do Bout It". In My Life is the first set in the second chapter of Cilla Black's years with EMI – and her first record without George Martin at the production helm, too! The styles open up with a lot more contemporary 70s elements than some of Black's previous records – and there's a fair bit of keyboard work to create these warmer currents underneath Cilla's always-strong lead vocals. Titles include "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song", "Someone", "Daydreamer", "Everything I Own", "Baby We Can't Go Wrong", "Let Him In", "Like A Song", and "I Believed It All". 2CD set features lots of bonus tracks – including "Changes", "From The Inside", "Alfie Darling", "He Was A Writer", "I'll Still Love You", "Little Bit Of Understanding", "Heatwave", "Anything You Might Say", and the full mono mix of the debut album. Black SabbathParanoid ... CD
Warner, 1971. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Quite possibly the greatest moment of genius ever from Black Sabbath – and a genre-changing record that influenced generations! The group are at their lean, raw best here – free from any cliches at all, and working in an incredibly heady brew of fuzzy guitar, romping bass, and dark drums – all topped by the instantly recognizable screech of the young Ozzy Osborne! Guitarist Tony Iommi virtually redefines rock use of the guitar with this record alone – and the Oz follows suit with some of the creepiest vocals set to record ever. Titles include the classics "Paranoid" and "Iron Man", plus "War Pigs", "Planet Caravan", "Electric Funeral", "Hand Of Doom", and "Rat Salad". CD

CDs 1 and 2 bring together Tim's issued legacy of the 70s, plus bits from later years too – including work with Gong on "The Octave Doctors & The Crystal Machine" and "Other Side Of The Sky", "Surf" with Saratoga Space Messengers, and "Lighthouse" with Hawkwind – plus his own tracks "Midnight", "Synthese Intemporel", "Passage Sur La Cite Des Revelations", "Who's Gonna Win The War", "A Return To The Clouds", "Waiting For Nati", "Jacuzzi Surfing", "Flating", "Byzance (live)", "Absent Friends", and "Tide Of The Century". Blood Sweat & TearsChild Is Father To The Man ... LP
Columbia, 1968. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A wild debut from Blood Sweat & Tears – one of those records that forever changed the face of popular music! The set's noteworthy not just for early vocals from Al Kooper – who was a key part of the group at their start – but also for key production work from a young John Simon – who helped arrange a bit, threw in a few musical touches, and really gave the group some focus on record – of the sort that would continue over the course of man albums. The set's got some added strings at points, and there's even some backup vocals from the duo of Valerie Simpson and Melba Moore. Titles include "Overture", "I Can't Quit Her", "Just One Smile", "Without Her", "My Days Are Numbered", "Morning Glory", and "So Much Love/Underture". LP, Vinyl record album

Parlophone, Late 60s. New Copy 5CD & book ... $89.99 99.99
An amazing legacy of lost music from David Bowie – a host of obscure recordings, demos, and session tracks done in the short space leading up to the Space Oddity album – presented in a book-style package that also features two versions of that classic record too! CD3 features Conversation Pieces – alternate takes of "London By Ta Ta" and "In The Heat Of The Morning" - plus BBC sessions, and more alternate takes. Virgin/Ryko, 1972. Used ... $9.99
The first truly great David Bowie electric guitar album – an all-out, power-driven set of tracks played by a group that included Mick Ronson and Tony Visconti! Bowie's in prime pre-Ziggy mode here – ripping into tunes that blister with dark energy that are some of the first truly dangerous songs he ever recorded – with this strong undercurrent of mania that follows some of the darker whimsy of his earliest records – set to searing sounds that would forever help Bowie cross over to audiences who might previously have thought him an arty wimp. The set includes classics like "Saviour Machine", "The Width Of The Circle", "All The Madmen", "Black Country Rock", "The Supermen", and the title track, "The Man Who Sold The World". ✨✧ David BowieSpace Oddity (2019 mix) ... CD
Parlophone, 1969. New Copy ... $14.99 16.98
An amazing departure for David Bowie – hardly the kind of record you would expect from his oboe-filled tunes of a few years before – and really the start of the groundbreaking, earthshaking, reinventionist era of his genius! There's a spacious, soaring quality to Space Oddity that's every bit the kind of magical music you might hope for in a set recorded at the close of the 60s – a shift into new modes, new sounds that seem to suck up all the best influences in rock from the previous few years, but fuse it into a new cosmic vision for the next decade. And while others might stumble on cliche with the weight of such a task, Bowie pulls it off brilliantly – mixing his fuzzier feelings with some of his more personal leanings – and showcasing a newly deep sense of songwriting here that's really amazing. Some tunes have the sensitivity of work on Hunky Dory, while others burn with the fire of Man Who Sold The World – all in a balance that never sounds schizophrenic at all. Titles include"Space Oddity", "Memory Of A Free Festival", "God Knows I'm Good", "Cygnet Committee", and "Unwashed & Somewhat Slightly Dazed". Features the special 2019 mix by Tony Visconti! CD
