✨✧ Ars NovaSunshine & Shadows ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good ... $24.99
The second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Alice CooperWelcome To My Nightmare ... LP
Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A record that might have been a step into cliche for Alice Cooper – but one that still stands surprisingly strong after all these many years! Sure, the Coop as spook-master is very firmly stated on the cover and title – and yes, the record does feature an appearance from Vincent Price – but all the searing intensity of the group at the start is still firmly in place – produced with groundbreaking genius by Bob Erzin, who almost seems to be laying down a blueprint for later generations that run the gamut from metal to goth to post-punk. Titles include "Black Widow", "Welcome To My Nightmare", "Devil's Food", "Department Of Youth", "Cold Ethyl", "Years Ago", "Escape", and "Only Women Bleed". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic/Rhino, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 21.98
A great document of all this famous harmony trio/quartet were able to achieve during their first few years – a masterful reworking of vocal group modes from earlier rock and soul styles, taken forward towards the 70s with a spirit that's still as powerful today as it was back at the time! These tracks saw so much circulation over the years, it's easy to forget how revolutionary they were – especially when coming from artists who had roots in more familiar rock modes, but who somehow really seemed to rise together in the company of each other. Titles include "Deja Vu", "Suite Judy Blue Eyes", "Ohio", "Teach Your Children", "Our House", "Helplessly Hoping", "Wooden Ships", "Woodstock", "Helpless", "Guinnevere", and "Find The Cost Of Freedom". Everything But The GirlAmplified Heart (25th anniversary editon) ... LP
Atlantic/Buzzin' Fly, 1994. New Copy ... $26.99 28.99
A later masterpiece from the duo of Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt – maybe their strongest record since their early years – and a great way of allowing their always-strong songwriting a chance to find a new sort of groove! In this case, the music is both a step back to the more acoustic colors of their first record or two – and a nod to some of the new rhythms that were coming from the London scene – used here in very subtle but brilliant ways by Watt, who'd soon go on to make some of his own creative sounds in new formats. As always, the vocals of Thorn are breathtaking and heartbreaking in ways we can hardly begin to describe – on titles that include "We Walk The Same Line", "I Don't Understand Anything", "Troubled Mind", "Rollercoaster", "Get Me", "25th December", and "Missing". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bryan FerryLet's Stick Together ... LP
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good ... $5.99
A surprising charmer from Bryan Ferry – his second solo album away from Roxy Music, and somehow even more focused than the first! The groove here is still very much in a Roxy mode, but tighter, leaner, and with more of a focus on Ferry's captivating vocals. And although a few tracks on the set are covers, there's also some killer Ferry originals that are right up there with the best Roxy Music work on the group's first 5 albums. Titles include "Casanova", "Sea Breezes", "2 HB", "Re-Make/Re-Model", and "It's Only Love" – plus a great reading of "You Go To My Head". LP, Vinyl record album

Allen GinsbergAllen Ginsberg Reads Kaddish – A 20th Century American Ecstatic Narrative Poem ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $49.99
The one-and-only entry in the Verbatum series from Atlantic Records – a proposed spoken word offshoot of the label – but one that only ever issued this fantastic 60s reading by Allen Ginsberg! As you might guess from the cover's beautiful photograph by Richard Avedon, Ginsberg is at the height of his hippie years here – and the poem Kaddish is a freewheeling, spiritually-infused work that is quite different than some of the earlier beat material. Ginsberg draws both on his Jewish roots and his increasing conflict with society for the piece – which is presented here in a lively recording done at Brandeis in 1964. ✨✧ Hall & OatesAbandoned Luncheonette ... LP
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good ... $6.99
A wonderful step forward for the team of Hall & Oates – and a set that has them moving more into soul than ever before! The album's a tremendous collaboration with the legendary Arif Mardin, who takes the pair's well-crafted vocals into territory that's much more slinkily soulful than some of their previous records – that sound that was always lurking in the background, never quite right, but which emerges here fully in that classic 70s Hall & Oates mode. Daryl and John seem to harmonize more here than before, and the backings are still somewhat rockish, but have a warmth that really suits their singing. We can't argue with the sublime brilliance of "She's Gone", one of those tracks that we've heard a bazillion times, but never cease to respect – and other titles include "Everytime I Look At You", "Had I Known You Better Then", "When The Morning Comes", and "Laughing Boy". ✨✧ Hall & OatesNo Goodbyes ... LP
Atlantic, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A groovy little collection that features a few previously-unissued tracks from the great early years of Hall & Oates at Atlantic Records – plus a few tracks from other label releases as well! The unissued numbers are all from 1973, and done with Arif Mardin's help in the studio – in this warmly swirling groove that really illustrates the way that Hall & Oates were able to pick up the best aspect of Philly soul production, and turn them towards their own blue-eyed lyrics and vocals. These cuts include "It's Uncanny", "I Want To Know You For A Long Time", and "Love You Like A Brother". The set then features some great material from the early Atlantic albums – including "Las Vegas Turnaround", "Can't Stop The Music", "She's Gone", "Lilly", "When The Morning Comes", and "70s Scenario". King CrimsonIn The Court Of The Crimson King ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $19.99
An album so heavy, it blew plenty of minds when first released at the end of the 60s! This set's the first-ever utterance from the King Crimson empire – the initial outing of the group, which featured Greg Lake on vocals, and lots of airy, darkly atmospheric guitar from the legendary Robert Fripp! The song structure is quite unusual – and the overall feel is less academically tangled than some of the later records – a feature that makes this album much more sought out by mainstream rockers looking for an intro to the group than some of the later sets. Yet having said that, there's also a pretty amazing approach here – somewhat obtuse, and definitely not looking for any radio edit hits – more just magical musings from a very unique ensemble. Peter Sinfield contributed the lyrics, which are sung by Lake – and Michael Giles handles drums and percussion, while Ian MacDonald plays flute, sax, keyboards, and more. Titles include "Moonchild", "21st Century Schizoid Man", "I Talk To The Wind", "Epitaph", and "Court Of The Crimson King". LP, Vinyl record album

King CrimsonLarks' Tongues In Aspic ... LP
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint- ... $34.99
For some folks, this might be the purest moment of sonic genius from King Crimson – a record that has this incredible dynamic range, with ultra-low passages followed by soaring highs – all delivered by a group that might well be one of the most technically skilled that Robert Fripp had put together by the time! Fripp himself handles many guitars and devices – alongside drums from Bill Bruford, viola and violin from David Cross, percussion from Jamie Muir, and superb bass and vocals from John Wetton – who really gives the group a focus and soul that balances out he geekier technical moments. Titles include the soaring two-part title track – plus "Easy Money", "Talking Drum", "Book Of Saturday", and "Exiles". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the heaviest early King Crimson albums – a set that really has the group taking off even more than before – pushing the needles way into the red with their own sort of sonic intensity! The group's a trio this time around – with the legendary Robert Fripp on guitar, really carving out the sound with an edge that's incredibly sharp – plus the great John Wetton on vocals and bass, giving the group an unexpected sense of soul – and lots of mighty drums from Bill Bruford too! Additional instrumentation comes from some cats who really help round out the more complicated edges of the Crimson sound – David Cross on violin, Mel Collins on soprano sax, Marc Charig on cornet, and Ian McDonald on soprano sax. Tracks are all nice and long – and titles include "Starless", "Providence", "One More Red Nightmare", and "Red". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1972. Very Good Gatefold ... $4.99
A record that has Bobby Lance looking a lot more long-haired than before – a set that was recorded up in the Atlantic Records studios up north, but with a sound that still has plenty of the same southern elements of Lance's debut – including some burning organ lines that really work great with the deeper, more sophisticated style of Bobby's music. There's less easy soul elements here, and instead this really compelling fusion of redneck rock and more sophisticated singer-songwriter modes – with Bobby even more fully-voiced and confident than ever – on titles that include "Hot Wood & Coal", "She Made Me A Man", "John The Rollin Man", "He Played The Reals", "Tribute To A Woman", and "Something Unfinished". One of the most monumental debuts in rock history – a record that hit the world like a led zeppelin, and left an impression for years to come! Led Zeppelin pretty much took over rock right from the beginning – which isn't too surprising, given that Jimmy Page had an in-demand guitar heavy for years already – but the power of this debut is still astonishing after all these years – a blistering blend of bluesy roots, psych fuzz, and razor-sharp instrumental dexterity! The whole thing's a gem – and titles include "Good Times Bad Times", "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" "You Shook Me", "Dazed And Confused", "Your Time Is Gonna Come", "Black Mountain Side", and "I Can't Quit You Baby". The record's got a pair of of Zep's best-remembered songs in "Immigrant Song" and their take on the traditional "Gallows Pole", but the whole thing is great – and a great balance of their earlier bombast with a lot more acoustic moments. This is the album where they started bringing some odd synth textures to the sound, and it's to Zeppelin's eternal credit that this doesn't compromise their blues-reverent hard rock one bit! There's no better Zeppelin album when it comes to giving the fans what they want, while chasing the band's adventurous muses at the same time. Leiber Stoller Big BandYakety Yak ... LP
Atlantic, Early 60s. Very Good ... $5.99
A very unusual little record, cut at the height of fame for the team of Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller! The session's a rare jazz one from the duo – put together to feature different versions of tunes they'd been penning for acts on Atlantic and some of the other big labels of the late 50s. Work here is all done in a mode that's a bit like the Ray Charles jazz style of the time – big band, but with plenty of R&B influences – and searing horn work from a batch of players who include Al Grey, Frank Foster, Ernie Royal, Thad Jones, Frank Rehak, and Benny Powell. Lieber & Stoller don't play on the record, but direct the tunes with the mentioned flair – although in a way that's a bit looser than their usual work. There's a Basie-esque flair to most numbers, and titles include "Smokey Joe's Cafe", "Hound Dog", "Loving You", "Poison Ivy", "Bazoom", "Black Denim Trousers & Motorcycle Boots", and "Jailhouse Rock". Motor City madness from the MC5 – a searing batch of work that still has the groups kicking out the jams whenever possible! Guitars are fuzzy, freaky, and full-on – played with plenty of force by Fred Smith and Wayne Cramer, and driven home with some heavy drums by Dennis Thompson – almost a blues into funk approach, via hard rock – and definitely standard-setting work for the time. The album's often overlooked in favor of their debut, but it's well worth seeking out – and features tracks that include "Future/Now", "Skunk (Sonicly Speaking)", "Poison", "Gotta Keep Movin", and "Sister Anne". ✨✧ RascalsFreedom Suite ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $2.99
A double-length set from The Rascals – possibly their most stretched-out exploration of ideas, at least during their initial run for Atlantic Records! The 2LP set features a fair bit of shorter, catchier tunes on the first record – many with some righteous soul overtones – but on the second record, the group really open up – hitting some longer jamming tunes on side three, and moving into a 15 minute instrumental on side four! Vocals are great from all three singers – Gene Cornish, Eddie Brigati, and Felix Cavaliere – and the rhythms are rock-solid too, often augmented with a bit of Atlantic-styled backings by Arif Mardin, to further enforce the soulfulness of the set. Titles include the hit "People Got To Be Free", plus "American The Beautiful", "Any Dance'll Do", "A Ray Of Hope", "Look Around", "Boom", "Heaven", "Cute", "Baby I'm Blue", and "Adrian's Birthday". YesFragile ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $9.99
Classic! Fragile is the one that catapulted Yes to unlikely stardom, and in so doing, it brought adventurous, proggy rock to mainstream audience – pretty much changing the face of rock for at least a decade to come! Rick Wakeman's arrival and his spacier electronic keyboards have a lot to do the Yes ascension, but beyond that that, the songs mix of anthemic, stadium-ready immenseness and trippier, oddball touches makes it a win for both pop/rock fans and prog lovers – win-win! Titles include "Roundabout", "Cans & Brahms", "We Have Heaven", "Mood For A Day", and "The Fish". LP, Vinyl record album

CloversTheir Greatest Recordings – The Early Years ... LP
Atco, Early 50s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $7.99
A sweet little collection of great tracks by the legendary Clovers – a group whose sound was a key force in transforming Atlantic Records during the 50s! The Clovers were an incredibly tight, incredibly consistent quintet – possessed of a rich talent for both sweet ballads and raspier groovers, in a way that helped push vocal harmonies much more strongly into an R&B mode than some of the efforts of groups who came before. This set features 14 of the group's best numbers from their early years with Atlantic – including the familiar hits, as well as some nice, lesser-known tracks that show just how strong The Clovers sound was overall. Titles include "Devil Or Angel", "Ting A Ling", "Blue Velvet", "Fool Fool Fool", "One Mint Julep", "Don't You Know I Love You", "Love Potion Number Nine", "Lovey Dovey", "Your Cash Ain't Nothin But Trash", "Hey Miss Fanny", and "Down In The Alley". FeltPictorial Jackson Review ... LP
Creation/Cherry Red (UK), 1988. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $18.99
Pure genius from a group who kept on growing strongly over the relatively short span of their career – maybe under-sung heroes at the time of their release, at least on this side of the Atlantic – but one of the few truly classic groups we can think of from the decade, at least with a recorded legacy this strong! The songs are as creatively distinct as anything every put forth by Morrissey and The Smiths – but in a very unique sort of way, with the guidance of mainman Lawrence firmly guiding the sound with his vocals amidst the wonderful songswirl of Hammond organ and guitar. Titles include "Apple Boutique", "Ivory Past", "Until The Fools Get Wise", "Bitter End", "How Spook Got Her Man", "Christopher Street", "Under A Pale Light", and "Don't Die On My Doorstep". Rare EarthDreams/Answers ... LP
Verve, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $49.99
The funky blue-eyed debut of Rare Earth – an early Detroit combination of soul, rock, and funk! The group really sprang to fame on Motown right after this early album for Verve – but this set may be even harder and heavier than any of their later records – produced by Dennis Coffey, with a nice blend of fuzz and funk, at a level that's very much like the best Atlantic sounds from Vanilla Fudge – but much more born from the Detroit scene that could give the world The Stooges and Funkadelic at the same time! Many cuts are soul standards, redone with a heavy-drum style that's pretty great – and some of the originals have more of the psych feel, but are graced by some genuinely soulful vocals, often done in harmony style. Titles include "Mothers Oats", "New Rochelle", "Yesterday On Third Avenue", "Red Apple", "Get Ready", "6-3-4-5", and "Sidewalk Cafe". (Soul, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label stereo pressing. Cover has some edge wear.)

Mitch Ryder & The Detroit WheelsBreakout ... LP
New Voice, Late 60s. Very Good ... $11.99
Blue-eyed soul from the legendary Mitch Ryder – and pretty darn gritty at that – steeped in styles borrowed from Memphis and Muscle Shoals, and given a bit of a color-blind twist on the Detroit scene of the late 60s! Mitch clearly loves the motor city sound of the 60s, but also takes things to farther points south, too – using elements that would be right at home on Stax or Atlantic Records, and coming up with a crossover sound that had his recorded almost ending up in more soul collections over the years than rock ones! Production is by pop maestro Bob Crewe, but it's surprisingly unadorned compared to some of Crewe's other work of the time – and the album bristles with sock-soul instrumentation from the Detroit Wheels, and loud, proud vocals from Mitch. There's a bit of garaey guitars in the mix, too – making for a mighty nice hybrid of styles – and titles include "Shakin With Linda", "You Get Your Kicks", "Any Day Now", "I Need Help", "Little Latin Lupe Lu", "Walkin The Dog", "I Had It Made", and the classic "Breakout". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono green label pressing.)
