Laura BraniganSelf Control ... LP
Atlantic, 1984. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Laura Branigan gets some help here on arrangements from Harold Faltermeyer – who makes things a bit funkier than you might expect – although still very much in the kind of poppy style he used famously on some big 80s soundtracks! The mode works well for Laura – whose approach is always on the soulful side of pop, but still filled here with all the sense of drama that made Branigan huge on the charts at the time. Titles include "Heart", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", "The Lucky One", "Self Control", and "Satisfaction". Titles include "The Lucky One (John Robie mix)", "The Lucky One (Jack White mix)", "Self Control (12" version)", and "Satisfaction (special dance mix)". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, Early 70s. Very Good ... $6.99
A great document of all this famous harmony trio/quartet were able to achieve during their first few years – a masterful reworking of vocal group modes from earlier rock and soul styles, taken forward towards the 70s with a spirit that's still as powerful today as it was back at the time! These tracks saw so much circulation over the years, it's easy to forget how revolutionary they were – especially when coming from artists who had roots in more familiar rock modes, but who somehow really seemed to rise together in the company of each other. Titles include "Deja Vu", "Suite Judy Blue Eyes", "Ohio", "Teach Your Children", "Our House", "Helplessly Hoping", "Wooden Ships", "Woodstock", "Helpless", "Guinnevere", and "Find The Cost Of Freedom". ✨✧ Everything But The GirlAmplified Heart (25th anniversary editon) ... LP
Atlantic, 1994. New Copy ... $26.99 28.99
A later masterpiece from the duo of Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt – maybe their strongest record since their early years – and a great way of allowing their always-strong songwriting a chance to find a new sort of groove! In this case, the music is both a step back to the more acoustic colors of their first record or two – and a nod to some of the new rhythms that were coming from the London scene – used here in very subtle but brilliant ways by Watt, who'd soon go on to make some of his own creative sounds in new formats. As always, the vocals of Thorn are breathtaking and heartbreaking in ways we can hardly begin to describe – on titles that include "We Walk The Same Line", "I Don't Understand Anything", "Troubled Mind", "Rollercoaster", "Get Me", "25th December", and "Missing". LP, Vinyl record album

Hall & OatesAbandoned Luncheonette ... LP
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good ... $3.99
A wonderful step forward for the team of Hall & Oates – and a set that has them moving more into soul than ever before! The album's a tremendous collaboration with the legendary Arif Mardin, who takes the pair's well-crafted vocals into territory that's much more slinkily soulful than some of their previous records – that sound that was always lurking in the background, never quite right, but which emerges here fully in that classic 70s Hall & Oates mode. Daryl and John seem to harmonize more here than before, and the backings are still somewhat rockish, but have a warmth that really suits their singing. We can't argue with the sublime brilliance of "She's Gone", one of those tracks that we've heard a bazillion times, but never cease to respect – and other titles include "Everytime I Look At You", "Had I Known You Better Then", "When The Morning Comes", and "Laughing Boy". King CrimsonIn The Court Of The Crimson King ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $24.99
An album so heavy, it blew plenty of minds when first released at the end of the 60s! This set's the first-ever utterance from the King Crimson empire – the initial outing of the group, which featured Greg Lake on vocals, and lots of airy, darkly atmospheric guitar from the legendary Robert Fripp! The song structure is quite unusual – and the overall feel is less academically tangled than some of the later records – a feature that makes this album much more sought out by mainstream rockers looking for an intro to the group than some of the later sets. Yet having said that, there's also a pretty amazing approach here – somewhat obtuse, and definitely not looking for any radio edit hits – more just magical musings from a very unique ensemble. Peter Sinfield contributed the lyrics, which are sung by Lake – and Michael Giles handles drums and percussion, while Ian MacDonald plays flute, sax, keyboards, and more. Titles include "Moonchild", "21st Century Schizoid Man", "I Talk To The Wind", "Epitaph", and "Court Of The Crimson King". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1970. Very Good- Gatefold ... $11.99
A wonderful second record from King Crimson – a set that follows in the same territory as the debut – with Greg Lake on vocals and Robert Fripp on guitar and devices – alongside Michael Giles on drums and Peter Giles on bass. There's some great jazzy touches at times – saxes and flute from Mel Collins and piano from Keith Tippet – and Peter Sinfield wrote the lyrics for Fripp's music – and Gordon Haskell sings a bit too. Atlantic, 1972. Very Good Gatefold ... $9.99
A record that has Bobby Lance looking a lot more long-haired than before – a set that was recorded up in the Atlantic Records studios up north, but with a sound that still has plenty of the same southern elements of Lance's debut – including some burning organ lines that really work great with the deeper, more sophisticated style of Bobby's music. There's less easy soul elements here, and instead this really compelling fusion of redneck rock and more sophisticated singer-songwriter modes – with Bobby even more fully-voiced and confident than ever – on titles that include "Hot Wood & Coal", "She Made Me A Man", "John The Rollin Man", "He Played The Reals", "Tribute To A Woman", and "Something Unfinished". One of the most monumental debuts in rock history – a record that hit the world like a led zeppelin, and left an impression for years to come! Led Zeppelin pretty much took over rock right from the beginning – which isn't too surprising, given that Jimmy Page had an in-demand guitar heavy for years already – but the power of this debut is still astonishing after all these years – a blistering blend of bluesy roots, psych fuzz, and razor-sharp instrumental dexterity! The whole thing's a gem – and titles include "Good Times Bad Times", "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" "You Shook Me", "Dazed And Confused", "Your Time Is Gonna Come", "Black Mountain Side", and "I Can't Quit You Baby". One of the most supremely classic of all classic hard rock albums! The third in Led Zeppelin's spectacular run of early albums – each one either matching or topping its predecessor, depending on one's personal favorite – and a record with an influence that's as massive as the sound! The record's got a pair of of Zep's best-remembered songs in "Immigrant Song" and their take on the traditional "Gallows Pole", but the whole thing is great – and a great balance of their earlier bombast with a lot more acoustic moments. Other tracks include "Friends", "Celebration Day", "Tangerine" and "Hats Off (To Roy Harper)". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Led ZeppelinLed Zeppelin IV ... LP
Atlantic, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Hard rock perfected! It's around Led Zeppelin IV that you can easily say that the group moved up from being incredibly great to flat-out legendary – really in a class by themselves, although maybe they'd already reached that point with the sublime sounds of the previous three records! There's a darkness here – and a sense of magick too – an eerie new energy that still has all the balls-out rock power of before, but which has the group moving into this heady territory that's really all their own. Every song is a classic – and tracks include "Black Dog", "Stairway To Heaven", "Rock And Roll", "Misty Mountain Hop", "When The Levee Breaks", "Going To California", "Four Sticks", and "Battle Of Evermore". ✨✧ Led ZeppelinPresence ... LP
Swan Song/Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $19.99
Overlooked genius from Led Zeppelin – an album that was missed by many the first time around, because of it's tight focus and simplicity! For the set, the group step back just a bit from their more stylistically sprawling tendencies – almost as if they got some of the more ambitious ideas out of their system with Physical Graffiti, or simply wanted to get out there and kick some ass – a back to basics move, and one that sees some tremendous guitar work from Jimmy Page! The album still has some longer songs and complicated changes – this is Led Zeppelin, after all – and the lack of over-played classic rock radio fodder actually makes this one a better listen nowadays than the more iconic albums. Includes "Achilles Last Stand", "For Your Life", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", "Candy Store Rock", "Hots On For Nowhere", and "Tea For One". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Leiber Stoller Big BandYakety Yak ... LP
Atlantic, Early 60s. Very Good ... $5.99
A very unusual little record, cut at the height of fame for the team of Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller! The session's a rare jazz one from the duo – put together to feature different versions of tunes they'd been penning for acts on Atlantic and some of the other big labels of the late 50s. Work here is all done in a mode that's a bit like the Ray Charles jazz style of the time – big band, but with plenty of R&B influences – and searing horn work from a batch of players who include Al Grey, Frank Foster, Ernie Royal, Thad Jones, Frank Rehak, and Benny Powell. Lieber & Stoller don't play on the record, but direct the tunes with the mentioned flair – although in a way that's a bit looser than their usual work. There's a Basie-esque flair to most numbers, and titles include "Smokey Joe's Cafe", "Hound Dog", "Loving You", "Poison Ivy", "Bazoom", "Black Denim Trousers & Motorcycle Boots", and "Jailhouse Rock". ✨✧ John PrineDiamonds In The Rough ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good- ... $8.99
Fantastic early work from John Prine – exactly the kind of sounds that made him so different from both the 60s generation of folksingers, and most of his hip 70s contemporaries too! In one breath, Prine manages to embrace musical worlds that run from New Orleans up through the Mississippi Delta, into Memphis and Nashville, on up to the Chicago scene in which he made his name – which is where the biting wit and special vision of his sound really comes into focus! Prine was reportedly discovered in a small Chicago club by Kris Kristofferson and Roger Ebert – but from the sound of his well-developed talents here, he hardly needed any big names to point him out – as the man's in very comfortable company of his own, working with Steve Goodman on second guitar and David Bromberg on electric guitar, mandolin, and dobro. Titles include "The Late John Garfield Blues", "The Frying Pan", "Billy The Bum", "Clocks & Spoons", "The Great Compromise", "Take The Star Out Of The Window", and "Yes I Guess They Oughta Name A Drink After You". Atlantic, 1980. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Mellow magic from Kenny Rankin – an album that follows nicely from his Kenny Rankin album of a few years before, and which has a relatively similar approach! Like that one, Don Costa's at the helm – producing as well as arranging – and most instrumentation is from a core small combo that includes some great keyboard work from Wendy Haas, who warms up Kenny's sound a bit, but never in a too-smooth sort of way. A few tracks bring in some bigger strings, but still keep up the rasp and personal feel of Rankin's music – and titles include "Down The Backstairs Of My Life", "Woman Woman", "Lyin Eyes", "Strings", "After The Roses", and "What Matters Most". RascalsFreedom Suite ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $6.99
A double-length set from The Rascals – possibly their most stretched-out exploration of ideas, at least during their initial run for Atlantic Records! The 2LP set features a fair bit of shorter, catchier tunes on the first record – many with some righteous soul overtones – but on the second record, the group really open up – hitting some longer jamming tunes on side three, and moving into a 15 minute instrumental on side four! Vocals are great from all three singers – Gene Cornish, Eddie Brigati, and Felix Cavaliere – and the rhythms are rock-solid too, often augmented with a bit of Atlantic-styled backings by Arif Mardin, to further enforce the soulfulness of the set. Titles include the hit "People Got To Be Free", plus "American The Beautiful", "Any Dance'll Do", "A Ray Of Hope", "Look Around", "Boom", "Heaven", "Cute", "Baby I'm Blue", and "Adrian's Birthday". Atlantic, 1971. Sealed Gatefold ... $9.99
The Rascals' last album for Atlantic Records – and a set that has the combo relying more than ever on the talents of organist Felix Cavaliere! There's a great New York blend of rock and soul going on in the set – a confident, soaring sort of approach to the tunes that's past caring what any simple genre conventions might mean, or which tracks might end up on radio – even though most of the tunes here are still plenty darn catchy. The piano and organ lines on the album snap along nicely, as do some of the drums (especially on the break cut "You Don't Know") – and although group member Eddie Brigati had left by the time the album was released, he still sings lead on a few tracks. Titles include the jazzy "Nama", which is a wonderful surprise – plus "You Don't Know", "Right On", "Ready For Love", "Fortunes", "Glory Glory", and "The Letter". LP, Vinyl record album

Classic! Fragile is the one that catapulted Yes to unlikely stardom, and in so doing, it brought adventurous, proggy rock to mainstream audience – pretty much changing the face of rock for at least a decade to come! Rick Wakeman's arrival and his spacier electronic keyboards have a lot to do the Yes ascension, but beyond that that, the songs mix of anthemic, stadium-ready immenseness and trippier, oddball touches makes it a win for both pop/rock fans and prog lovers – win-win! Titles include "Roundabout", "Cans & Brahms", "We Have Heaven", "Mood For A Day", and "The Fish". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Roy BuchananYou're Not Alone ... LP
Atlantic, 1978. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The title might be a tipoff here – as Roy Buchanan really soars into space on an album that finds an even more majestic setting for his mighty powers on guitar – especially given that a fair bit of the album's instrumental! Roy works with a core quartet that includes Ray Gomez on second guitar, Willie Weeks on bass, and Andrew Newmark on drums – a group who are almost a fusion combo at times, and who maybe help Buchanan find one of his more compelling settings of the 70s – free from some of the song structures that vocals would provide, and sounding fantastic throughout. The set does have a great vocal workout of the Neil Young tune "Down By The River" – with lead vocals by Gary St Clair – and other titles include "You're Not Alone", "The Opening/Miles From Earth", "Fly Night Bird", "Turn To Stone", and "Supernova". ✨✧ Bobby DarinIf I Were A Carpenter ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
What a great album – and a real departure for Darin! Bobby D had mostly been a swinging schmaltzy singer up until this one – but his discovery of Tim Hardin, which seemed to coincide with a whole new feeling of mortality in Darin's work, catapulted the singer into a whole new era. Sure, you might want to say that Darin was a cash-in copycat for stealing so many of Tim Hardin's songs (5 of the 11 tracks on the record are by Hardin), but it's exactly that excess, and Darin's honest reading of the material that makes the album so compelling! Flesh it out with a bit more work by the likes of John Sebastian, Buffy St Marie, and Darin himself, and you've got a stunning bit of folksy vocals that's very much in the mode of Hardin's own work. Titles include "Reason to Believe", "Misty Roses", "The Girl That Stood Beside Me", "Red Baloon", "Don't Make Promises", and "Amy". (Vocalists, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby DarinBobby Darin Born Walden Robert Cassotto ... LP
Direction, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
An incredible late album from Bobby Darin – and a real treasure! The record was cut after Darin's mid 60s fascination with the work of Tim Hardin, most of which he re-recorded for Atlantic during that time – but it's got a similar style to the Hardin years, yet features some stunning original compositions by Darin. After the confidence of his early show days, it's amazing to hear Bobby D singing songs like this – filled with sadness, insecurity, and kind of a mind-numbing inability to cope with the times. Of course, part of this has to do with Darin's increasingly poor health conditions (he was predicted to live a very short life at an early age) – and the raw honest experimental quality of the album's a real testament to Darin's perpetual struggle to combine a strong professional bent to be a crossover entertainer with an increasing (and surprising) desire to emerge as a creative force on his own. Includes the sublime "I Can See The Wind", plus "Change", "Sunday", "Questions", and "The Proper Gander". (Vocalists, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby DarinDirection Albums (Born Robert Walden Cassotto/Commitment/Rare Darin) (3LP 180 gram pressing) ... LP
Direction/Demon (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 3LP ... $64.99
A three album set – one that brings together both rare Bobby Darin albums for the Direction label, plus a bonus LP of unusual material too! First up is Born Robert Walden Cassotto – an incredible late album from Bobby Darin – and a real treasure! Commitment is really fantastic later work from Bobby Darin – material that's quite different than the simple pop of his early Atco years, and even the jazzier style he used earlier on in the 60s! The set is one of two issued by the Direction label – and features Bobby taking off from some of the Tim Hardin-inspired modes he was using later on at Atlantic – picking up some of the deeper themes of the earlier singer-songwriter years – and singing in a very moody, contemplative style! According to some, Darin was aware that his health only gave him a few more years to live – which was part of the introspection of the music – and although the style owes a lot to Tim Hardin and some of his contemporaries, the songs are all originals by Darin – with some elements that are very different than before. Tracks include "Hey Magic Man", "Light Blue", "Distractions", and "Song For a Dollar". Rare Darin features related singles from the Direction sessions, plus unreleased material, and live 1969 tracks recorded at the Troubadour – titles that include "Baby May", "City Life", "Route 58", "Maybe We Can Get It Together", "RX Pyro", "Long Line Rider", "Distractions", and "Monologue Questions". John FaheyTransfiguration Of Blind Joe Death ... LP
Takoma, 1965. Very Good+ ... $28.99
One of the first full albums recorded by the legendary John Fahey – originally issued on the tiny Riverboat label, then circulated more widely on his own Takoma imprint! The set offers a second chapter of the sort of work on Fahey's Blind Joe Death debut – but the sound is already light years ahead of the first record – with a more developed sense of tone, timing, and phrasing – at a level that shows a tremendous amount of growth by the musician in just a few years! Even in the mid-60s, Fahey's already showing a lot of the unique power that would continue to awe generations for decades to come – and the tracks here unfurl an incredible approach to acoustic guitar that's neither folk, nor blues, nor just about anything else – just purely Fahey-esque. Titles include "Orinda Moraga", "Beautiful Linda Getchell", "On The Sunny Side Of The Ocean", "101 Is A Hard Road To Travel", "How Green Was My Valley", and "Poor Boy". (Folk/Country, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album
(Unusual pressing – UK Transatlantic pressing, vintage. Back cover has some light water wrinkling, but front is nice.)

FeltPictorial Jackson Review ... LP
Creation/Cherry Red (UK), 1988. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $18.99
Pure genius from a group who kept on growing strongly over the relatively short span of their career – maybe under-sung heroes at the time of their release, at least on this side of the Atlantic – but one of the few truly classic groups we can think of from the decade, at least with a recorded legacy this strong! The songs are as creatively distinct as anything every put forth by Morrissey and The Smiths – but in a very unique sort of way, with the guidance of mainman Lawrence firmly guiding the sound with his vocals amidst the wonderful songswirl of Hammond organ and guitar. Titles include "Apple Boutique", "Ivory Past", "Until The Fools Get Wise", "Bitter End", "How Spook Got Her Man", "Christopher Street", "Under A Pale Light", and "Don't Die On My Doorstep". Bert JanschIt Don't Bother Me ... LP
Transatlantic, 1965. Near Mint- ... $16.99
Continuing genius from the great Bert Jansch – the singer/songwriter's second album, and one of his most sublime records ever! The album's got an up-close, personal vibe – mostly just Bert's vocals and acoustic guitar, a bit like the earliest albums by Bob Dylan – and like Dylan, Jansch has this approach that's completely his own – very much schooled in older 20th century traditions, but focused on finding a new way forward – with a mix of melodic and harmonic elements that flow from his guitar with effortless ease, and are matched by some beautifully pointed vocals by a singer who sounds unlike anyone else. At times, the tunes have a quality that's almost hypnotic – a bit of a John Fahey vibe in the progressions, but a bit warmer – and titles include "Tinker's Blues", "It Don't Bother Me", "Harvest Your Thoughts Of Love", "Lucky Thirteen", "As The Day Grows Longer Now", "So Long", "900 Miles", and "Ring A Ding Blues". MarcelsBlue Moon ... LP
Colpix, 1961. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Classic group harmony from The Marcels – a group who scored big with the title track of this solid set, but who also have plenty more to offer! The quintet have a style of vocal interplay that was one of the most dynamic of the time – not gimmicky, but really always in search of new combinations, new inventions, and new ways of getting a lyric across – as you'll know from the hit. But they've also got a soulful cohesiveness that's really underscored by the album's great Bert Keyes arrangements – not entirely an Atlantic Records mode, but not far off either. Titles include the classic "Blue Moon", plus "Most Of All", "Teeter Totter Love", "Crazy Bells", "A Fallen Tear", "Goodbye To Love", and "Sweet Was The Wine". (Soul, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

John MayallBlues From Laurel Canyon ... LP
London, 1968. Very Good+ ... $14.99
British blues meets LA's Laurel Canyon – a trans-Atlantic (or is it Pacific?) blend that makes for one of John Mayall's most compelling albums of the 60s! The album was recorded after the breakup of the Blues Breakers group – but it still features strong support from Mick Taylor on guitar – a key factor in the previous combo's sound, given almost even more space here to stand out front with Mayall. Other instrumentation includes bass and drums, plus a bit of tablas – and the overall approach is a lot more spare than other Blues Breakers sets – still bluesy in approach, but with some definite freer-thinking moments too, picked up from a trip to Laurel Canyon that was Mayall's inspiration for the set. Titles include "Walking On Sunset", "Vacation", "Ready To Ride", "Medicine Man", "Miss James", "The Bear", "First Time Alone", and "Fly Tomorrow". LP, Vinyl record album

Mitch Ryder & The Detroit WheelsBreakout ... LP
New Voice, Late 60s. Very Good ... $13.99
Blue-eyed soul from the legendary Mitch Ryder – and pretty darn gritty at that – steeped in styles borrowed from Memphis and Muscle Shoals, and given a bit of a color-blind twist on the Detroit scene of the late 60s! Mitch clearly loves the motor city sound of the 60s, but also takes things to farther points south, too – using elements that would be right at home on Stax or Atlantic Records, and coming up with a crossover sound that had his recorded almost ending up in more soul collections over the years than rock ones! Production is by pop maestro Bob Crewe, but it's surprisingly unadorned compared to some of Crewe's other work of the time – and the album bristles with sock-soul instrumentation from the Detroit Wheels, and loud, proud vocals from Mitch. There's a bit of garaey guitars in the mix, too – making for a mighty nice hybrid of styles – and titles include "Shakin With Linda", "You Get Your Kicks", "Any Day Now", "I Need Help", "Little Latin Lupe Lu", "Walkin The Dog", "I Had It Made", and the classic "Breakout". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono green label pressing.)
