Ars NovaSunshine & Shadows ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good ... $6.99
The second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red & green Broadway label pressing. Cover has a small cutout hole and clear tape on the seams.)

Laura BraniganSelf Control ... LP
Atlantic, 1984. Near Mint- ... $5.99
Laura Branigan gets some help here on arrangements from Harold Faltermeyer – who makes things a bit funkier than you might expect – although still very much in the kind of poppy style he used famously on some big 80s soundtracks! The mode works well for Laura – whose approach is always on the soulful side of pop, but still filled here with all the sense of drama that made Branigan huge on the charts at the time. Titles include "Heart", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", "The Lucky One", "Self Control", and "Satisfaction". Titles include "The Lucky One (John Robie mix)", "The Lucky One (Jack White mix)", "Self Control (12" version)", and "Satisfaction (special dance mix)". LP, Vinyl record album

The record that really put INXS over the top – and a set that virtually defined the sound of mainstream rock for the second half of the 80s! The tunes still have plenty of guitars, but have also borrowed lots of beats and rhythms from modern dance and club modes – fused together by the mixing of Bob Clearmountain into a razor-sharp groove. Titles include "Guns In The Sky", "Kick", "Mystify", "Never Tear Us Apart", "Calling All Nations", "Tiny Daggers", "Meditate", "Need You Tonight", "New Sensation", "Devil Inside", "Wild Life", and "The Loved One". ✨✧ King CrimsonLarks' Tongues In Aspic ... LP
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
For some folks, this might be the purest moment of sonic genius from King Crimson – a record that has this incredible dynamic range, with ultra-low passages followed by soaring highs – all delivered by a group that might well be one of the most technically skilled that Robert Fripp had put together by the time! Fripp himself handles many guitars and devices – alongside drums from Bill Bruford, viola and violin from David Cross, percussion from Jamie Muir, and superb bass and vocals from John Wetton – who really gives the group a focus and soul that balances out he geekier technical moments. Titles include the soaring two-part title track – plus "Easy Money", "Talking Drum", "Book Of Saturday", and "Exiles". LP, Vinyl record album

Houses Of The Holy is the essential the blueprint for countless imitators to come – but it's also got smarts, subtleties and creative ambitious that's just plain lost on the watered wannabes that floated up in Zeppelin's wake. Titles include "The Crunge", "Over The Hills & Far Away", "The Song Remains The Same", "The Rain Song", "Dancing Days", "Dyer Maker", "No Quarter", and "The Ocean". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Led ZeppelinIn Through The Out Door ... LP
Swan Song/Atlantic, 1979. Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Led Zeppelin's final album of the 70s – a record that really has them stretching out and trying on some new ideas, yet still holding onto all their genius in the process! Sure, the album's maybe not as iconic as the first few – but from the perspective of decades later, it's a killer – and still blows away just about all the competition – with that Plant/Page magic that still comes through brilliantly, no matter what the setting. There's a few unusual twists and turns – a bit of Latin here, a slight keyboard there – but overall the main focus is still on the lead duo, getting plenty of heavy drums to keep things moving. Titles include the hits "Fool In The Rain" and "All My Love" – plus "In The Evening", "South Bound Suarez", "Carouselambra", and "I'm Gonna Crawl". LP, Vinyl record album
(In cover variant "B", including the inner sleeve. Vinyl has a number of marks, but cover is still in decent shape, with lightly bent corners.)

The third in Led Zeppelin's spectacular run of early albums – each one either matching or topping its predecessor, depending on one's personal favorite – and a record with an influence that's as massive as the sound! The record's got a pair of of Zep's best-remembered songs in "Immigrant Song" and their take on the traditional "Gallows Pole", but the whole thing is great – and a great balance of their earlier bombast with a lot more acoustic moments. Other tracks include "Friends", "Celebration Day", "Tangerine" and "Hats Off (To Roy Harper)". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Led ZeppelinLed Zeppelin IV ... LP
Atlantic, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Hard rock perfected! It's around Led Zeppelin IV that you can easily say that the group moved up from being incredibly great to flat-out legendary – really in a class by themselves, although maybe they'd already reached that point with the sublime sounds of the previous three records! There's a darkness here – and a sense of magick too – an eerie new energy that still has all the balls-out rock power of before, but which has the group moving into this heady territory that's really all their own. Every song is a classic – and tracks include "Black Dog", "Stairway To Heaven", "Rock And Roll", "Misty Mountain Hop", "When The Levee Breaks", "Going To California", "Four Sticks", and "Battle Of Evermore". ✨✧ Led ZeppelinPresence ... LP
Swan Song/Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Overlooked genius from Led Zeppelin – an album that was missed by many the first time around, because of it's tight focus and simplicity! For the set, the group step back just a bit from their more stylistically sprawling tendencies – almost as if they got some of the more ambitious ideas out of their system with Physical Graffiti, or simply wanted to get out there and kick some ass – a back to basics move, and one that sees some tremendous guitar work from Jimmy Page! The album still has some longer songs and complicated changes – this is Led Zeppelin, after all – and the lack of over-played classic rock radio fodder actually makes this one a better listen nowadays than the more iconic albums. Includes "Achilles Last Stand", "For Your Life", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", "Candy Store Rock", "Hots On For Nowhere", and "Tea For One". LP, Vinyl record album

John PrinePrime Prine – Best Of John Prine (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Atlantic/Rhino, 1976. New Copy ... $21.99
The compilation that capped off a younger John Prine's early years at Atlantic Records – and if it might have come off as a bit prematurely titled at at time given the treasure trove of "best of" level material Prine would record for decades to come, there's no question after all these years ther is plenty of genuinely prime Prine songs here! John's Atlantic albums still stand as some of the finest folk rock ever put out by the label, hislyrics and vocals that distinctive mix of wit and grit, Arif Mardin's production smart enough to keep things spare and intimate when necessary, and to bring in some lusher touches at times. Includes "Sam Stone", "Saddle In The Rain", "Pease Don't Bury Me", "Grandpa Was A Carpenter", "Donald & Lydia", "Illegal Smile", "Sweet Revenge", "Souvenirs", "Come Back To Us Barbara Lewis Hare Krishna Beauregard" and "Hello In There". Classic! Fragile is the one that catapulted Yes to unlikely stardom, and in so doing, it brought adventurous, proggy rock to mainstream audience – pretty much changing the face of rock for at least a decade to come! Rick Wakeman's arrival and his spacier electronic keyboards have a lot to do with the Yes ascension, but beyond that that, the songs mix of anthemic, stadium-ready immenseness and trippier, oddball touches makes it a win for both pop/rock fans and prog lovers – win-win! Young RascalsGroovin' ... LP
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Possibly the biggest album ever by The Rascals – a wonderfully tight batch of tunes that has the group hitting perfectly on all their best fronts! Blue eyed soul mixes wonderfully with some rougher garage-styled rock – and the execution here is perfect enough to please listeners on both sides of the fence. Perhaps most noteworthy is the presence of Arif Mardin arrangements on some of the album's key tracks – a factor that really helps the group find their groove, and sparkle even more brilliantly than before. Titles include "Groovin", "If You Knew", "A Girl Like You", "Find Somebody", "I'm So Happy Now", "Sueno", "How Can I Be Sure", and "It's Love". (Soul, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

GreenGreen (Atco) ... LP
Atco, 1969. Very Good ... $29.99
A psychedelic gem recorded at Gold Star Studios at the end of the 60s – one that brings a fair bit of British influences into play with the trippier sounds of the American underground of the time! This Atlantic debut by the group shows a tremendous amount of promise – and an approach to the music that sometimes takes on loftier ambitions through its use of bit of brass and reeds amidst the core keyboards, guitar, bass, and drums of the tunes. The songs are tight and sharp, but have some nice flourishes too – almost in the later Chad & Jeremy mode, with a real "British through LA" sort of sound. Titles include "RCMPB", "Don't", "Have You Ever", "To Be", "Sunrise #7", "Sparkle", and "Just Try". LP, Vinyl record album

Bert JanschJack Orion ... LP
Transatlantic/Superior Viaduct, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99 24.98
A huge leap forward for the mighty Bert Jansch – and a record that's somehow even more amazing than the ones that came before! Bert's maybe even more introspective here, but also on a personal journey that takes him down musical paths that seem broader than before – almost echoing a wider range of influences on his guitar performance, yet in a way that still comes across with a uniquely pointed vibe. There's some occasional shift in the instrumentation, too – as Jansch plays banjo on the leadoff track, but with the same chilling currents as his sublime acoustic guitar – and John Renbourn joins on second guitar for a number of tracks, prefacing the pair's collaboration to come. And as with all of Jansch's genius material at this point, there's a quality that's both ancient and modern, timeless and uniquely tied to its moment – flowering beautifully on tunes that include "Jack Orion", "The Waggoner's Lad", "Nottamun Town", "Black Water Side", "Pretty Polly", and "The Gardner". John RenbournFaro Annie ... LP
Reprise, 1972. Near Mint- ... $39.99
An album of understated brilliance from the great John Renbourn – a set that mostly just features John on vocals and guitar, working through tunes of a traditional nature – yet delivering a record that's full of tremendously powerful moments! There's none of the hoke here that you might have gotten from a folk revival record from a decade before – and instead, Renbourn's bringing all the amazing new discoveries he and his contemporaries have unlocked in the acoustic guitar, as a way of opening up some of the darker corners and spookier elements of the tunes – none of which should be that strong on their own, but which work together here beautifully. Renbourn gets a bit of help from time to time – vocals from Dorris Henderson, harmonica from Pete Dyer, and drums from Terry Cox – but most of the set is just vocals and guitar, even more timeless in 1971 than it might have been before John plays a bit of sitar and harmonica, too – and titles include "Kokomo Blues", "Little Sadie", "Shake Shake Mama", 'The Cuckoo","Willy O Winsbury", "Faro Annie", and "Come On In My Kitchen". ✨✧ Bruce SpringsteenNebraska ... LP
Columbia, 1982. Very Good+ ... $24.99
The starkest, sparest ever by Bruce Springsteen – sans accompaniment for the most part, having famously opted to release the haunting guitar, voice and harmonica demos as the actual album – and it's devastatingly strong to this day! The hallmark facet is that it's a largely solo acoustic record, the the great thing about that is how distinctively Springsteen sounding it is – with the all the earnestness of his more anthemic material, and more – just done with a sometimes somber, always intimate approach. One of those records that deserves all of the loft praise!
