Ars NovaSunshine & Shadows ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good ... $19.99
The second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Black PearlBlack Pearl ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+ ... $13.99
Heavy drums and a good dose of soul – both of which make Black Pearl stand out a bit from many of their late 60s contemporaries! There's a definite bluesy undercurrent to the group's music, but the riffs are also pretty hard and fast too – almost a bit funky at times, and delivered with a starker sort of groove than the usual blues rock combo. The musicianship is super tight throughout – really at a superstar level, but without sounding slick or commercial – and the album alone is worth it for the sharp drums and guitar leads, but also sports some pretty great vocals too – with almost a garagey soul sort of feel. Titles include "White Devil", "Mr Soul Satisfaction", "Thinkin Bout The Good Times", "Crazy Chicken", "Forget It", "Climbing Up The Walls", "Reach Up", "Bent Over", and "Endless Journey". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red & green Broadway label pressing. Cover has a cutout notch, some ring & edge wear, and some seam splitting.)

✨✧ Alice CooperWelcome To My Nightmare ... LP
Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A record that might have been a step into cliche for Alice Cooper – but one that still stands surprisingly strong after all these many years! Sure, the Coop as spook-master is very firmly stated on the cover and title – and yes, the record does feature an appearance from Vincent Price – but all the searing intensity of the group at the start is still firmly in place – produced with groundbreaking genius by Bob Erzin, who almost seems to be laying down a blueprint for later generations that run the gamut from metal to goth to post-punk. Titles include "Black Widow", "Welcome To My Nightmare", "Devil's Food", "Department Of Youth", "Cold Ethyl", "Years Ago", "Escape", and "Only Women Bleed". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great document of all this famous harmony trio/quartet were able to achieve during their first few years – a masterful reworking of vocal group modes from earlier rock and soul styles, taken forward towards the 70s with a spirit that's still as powerful today as it was back at the time! These tracks saw so much circulation over the years, it's easy to forget how revolutionary they were – especially when coming from artists who had roots in more familiar rock modes, but who somehow really seemed to rise together in the company of each other. Titles include "Deja Vu", "Suite Judy Blue Eyes", "Ohio", "Teach Your Children", "Our House", "Helplessly Hoping", "Wooden Ships", "Woodstock", "Helpless", "Guinnevere", and "Find The Cost Of Freedom". Everything But The GirlAmplified Heart (25th anniversary editon) ... LP
Atlantic/Buzzin' Fly, 1994. New Copy ... $26.99 28.99
A later masterpiece from the duo of Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt – maybe their strongest record since their early years – and a great way of allowing their always-strong songwriting a chance to find a new sort of groove! In this case, the music is both a step back to the more acoustic colors of their first record or two – and a nod to some of the new rhythms that were coming from the London scene – used here in very subtle but brilliant ways by Watt, who'd soon go on to make some of his own creative sounds in new formats. As always, the vocals of Thorn are breathtaking and heartbreaking in ways we can hardly begin to describe – on titles that include "We Walk The Same Line", "I Don't Understand Anything", "Troubled Mind", "Rollercoaster", "Get Me", "25th December", and "Missing". Allen GinsbergAllen Ginsberg Reads Kaddish – A 20th Century American Ecstatic Narrative Poem ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $36.99
The one-and-only entry in the Verbatum series from Atlantic Records – a proposed spoken word offshoot of the label – but one that only ever issued this fantastic 60s reading by Allen Ginsberg! As you might guess from the cover's beautiful photograph by Richard Avedon, Ginsberg is at the height of his hippie years here – and the poem Kaddish is a freewheeling, spiritually-infused work that is quite different than some of the earlier beat material. Ginsberg draws both on his Jewish roots and his increasing conflict with society for the piece – which is presented here in a lively recording done at Brandeis in 1964. Hall & OatesWar Babies ... LP
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Hip Hall & Oates material from the early days – a set produced by Todd Rundgren, with a sound that definitely shows his presence! The tunes here are really wonderfully focused – tightened up a bit more than before, but never in ways that are too-poppy or commercial. Rundgren's great ear for a hook is really at play here – emphasizing the best elements of the tunes, in ways that keep them slinkily soulful, with almost a Steely Dan sort of sensibility. Instrumentation is pretty basic and bare – another great aspect of the record – and Rundgren also joins in a bit on guitar. Titles include "70s Scenario", "War Baby Son Of Zorro", "Can't Stop The Music", "Is It A Star", "Beanie G & The Rose Tattoo", "I'm Watching You", "Better Watch Your Back", and "Screaming Through December". ✨✧ King CrimsonIn The Court Of The Crimson King ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good Gatefold ... $24.99
An album so heavy, it blew plenty of minds when first released at the end of the 60s! This set's the first-ever utterance from the King Crimson empire – the initial outing of the group, which featured Greg Lake on vocals, and lots of airy, darkly atmospheric guitar from the legendary Robert Fripp! The song structure is quite unusual – and the overall feel is less academically tangled than some of the later records – a feature that makes this album much more sought out by mainstream rockers looking for an intro to the group than some of the later sets. Yet having said that, there's also a pretty amazing approach here – somewhat obtuse, and definitely not looking for any radio edit hits – more just magical musings from a very unique ensemble. Peter Sinfield contributed the lyrics, which are sung by Lake – and Michael Giles handles drums and percussion, while Ian MacDonald plays flute, sax, keyboards, and more. Titles include "Moonchild", "21st Century Schizoid Man", "I Talk To The Wind", "Epitaph", and "Court Of The Crimson King". LP, Vinyl record album

A wonderful second record from King Crimson – a set that follows in the same territory as the debut – with Greg Lake on vocals and Robert Fripp on guitar and devices – alongside Michael Giles on drums and Peter Giles on bass. There's some great jazzy touches at times – saxes and flute from Mel Collins and piano from Keith Tippet – and Peter Sinfield wrote the lyrics for Fripp's music – and Gordon Haskell sings a bit too. One of the most monumental debuts in rock history – a record that hit the world like a led zeppelin, and left an impression for years to come! Led Zeppelin pretty much took over rock right from the beginning – which isn't too surprising, given that Jimmy Page had an in-demand guitar heavy for years already – but the power of this debut is still astonishing after all these years – a blistering blend of bluesy roots, psych fuzz, and razor-sharp instrumental dexterity! The whole thing's a gem – and titles include "Good Times Bad Times", "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" "You Shook Me", "Dazed And Confused", "Your Time Is Gonna Come", "Black Mountain Side", and "I Can't Quit You Baby". The third in Led Zeppelin's spectacular run of early albums – each one either matching or topping its predecessor, depending on one's personal favorite – and a record with an influence that's as massive as the sound! The record's got a pair of of Zep's best-remembered songs in "Immigrant Song" and their take on the traditional "Gallows Pole", but the whole thing is great – and a great balance of their earlier bombast with a lot more acoustic moments. Hard rock perfected! It's around Led Zeppelin IV that you can easily say that the group moved up from being incredibly great to flat-out legendary – really in a class by themselves, although maybe they'd already reached that point with the sublime sounds of the previous three records! There's a darkness here – and a sense of magick too – an eerie new energy that still has all the balls-out rock power of before, but which has the group moving into this heady territory that's really all their own. Every song is a classic – and tracks include "Black Dog", "Stairway To Heaven", "Rock And Roll", "Misty Mountain Hop", "When The Levee Breaks", "Going To California", "Four Sticks", and "Battle Of Evermore". There's no better Zeppelin album when it comes to giving the fans what they want, while chasing the band's adventurous muses at the same time. Motor City madness from the MC5 – a searing batch of work that still has the groups kicking out the jams whenever possible! Guitars are fuzzy, freaky, and full-on – played with plenty of force by Fred Smith and Wayne Cramer, and driven home with some heavy drums by Dennis Thompson – almost a blues into funk approach, via hard rock – and definitely standard-setting work for the time. ✨✧ John PrineDiamonds In The Rough ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Fantastic early work from John Prine – exactly the kind of sounds that made him so different from both the 60s generation of folksingers, and most of his hip 70s contemporaries too! In one breath, Prine manages to embrace musical worlds that run from New Orleans up through the Mississippi Delta, into Memphis and Nashville, on up to the Chicago scene in which he made his name – which is where the biting wit and special vision of his sound really comes into focus! Prine was reportedly discovered in a small Chicago club by Kris Kristofferson and Roger Ebert – but from the sound of his well-developed talents here, he hardly needed any big names to point him out – as the man's in very comfortable company of his own, working with Steve Goodman on second guitar and David Bromberg on electric guitar, mandolin, and dobro. Titles include "The Late John Garfield Blues", "The Frying Pan", "Billy The Bum", "Clocks & Spoons", "The Great Compromise", "Take The Star Out Of The Window", and "Yes I Guess They Oughta Name A Drink After You". Atlantic, 1969. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $7.99
A double-length set from The Rascals – possibly their most stretched-out exploration of ideas, at least during their initial run for Atlantic Records! The 2LP set features a fair bit of shorter, catchier tunes on the first record – many with some righteous soul overtones – but on the second record, the group really open up – hitting some longer jamming tunes on side three, and moving into a 15 minute instrumental on side four! Vocals are great from all three singers – Gene Cornish, Eddie Brigati, and Felix Cavaliere – and the rhythms are rock-solid too, often augmented with a bit of Atlantic-styled backings by Arif Mardin, to further enforce the soulfulness of the set. Titles include the hit "People Got To Be Free", plus "American The Beautiful", "Any Dance'll Do", "A Ray Of Hope", "Look Around", "Boom", "Heaven", "Cute", "Baby I'm Blue", and "Adrian's Birthday". Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $11.99
Classic! Fragile is the one that catapulted Yes to unlikely stardom, and in so doing, it brought adventurous, proggy rock to mainstream audience – pretty much changing the face of rock for at least a decade to come! Rick Wakeman's arrival and his spacier electronic keyboards have a lot to do the Yes ascension, but beyond that that, the songs mix of anthemic, stadium-ready immenseness and trippier, oddball touches makes it a win for both pop/rock fans and prog lovers – win-win! Titles include "Roundabout", "Cans & Brahms", "We Have Heaven", "Mood For A Day", and "The Fish". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red and green label with Broadway address. Cover has waviness due to moisture along the bottom half.)

Jackie De ShannonPut A Little Love In Your Heart ... LP
Imperial, 1969. Very Good- ... $1.99
Quite possibly the last great hit from singer Jackie DeShannon – an album built around the righteous spirit of the title track – filled with really wonderful original tunes penned by Jackie and soul singer Jimmy Holiday! The album may well be the best to explore the space between pop and soul that often characterized Jackie's work – and the overall sound is somewhat similar to some of Dusty Springfield's best pop/soul work from the same stretch. 10 of the album's 12 tracks are originals by Holiday and DeShannon – all set to soaring orchestrations by James Langeford, which often have a pronounced influence from the sound of Atlantic Records in the late 60s! Titles include "Put A Little Love In Your Heart", "You Are The Real Thing", "River Of Love", "Movin", "You Can Come To Me", "You Have A Way With Me", and "I Let Go Completely". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)

FeltPictorial Jackson Review ... LP
Creation/Cherry Red (UK), 1988. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $18.99
Pure genius from a group who kept on growing strongly over the relatively short span of their career – maybe under-sung heroes at the time of their release, at least on this side of the Atlantic – but one of the few truly classic groups we can think of from the decade, at least with a recorded legacy this strong! The songs are as creatively distinct as anything every put forth by Morrissey and The Smiths – but in a very unique sort of way, with the guidance of mainman Lawrence firmly guiding the sound with his vocals amidst the wonderful songswirl of Hammond organ and guitar. Titles include "Apple Boutique", "Ivory Past", "Until The Fools Get Wise", "Bitter End", "How Spook Got Her Man", "Christopher Street", "Under A Pale Light", and "Don't Die On My Doorstep". GreenGreen (Atco) ... LP
Atco, 1969. Very Good ... $29.99
A psychedelic gem recorded at Gold Star Studios at the end of the 60s – one that brings a fair bit of British influences into play with the trippier sounds of the American underground of the time! This Atlantic debut by the group shows a tremendous amount of promise – and an approach to the music that sometimes takes on loftier ambitions through its use of bit of brass and reeds amidst the core keyboards, guitar, bass, and drums of the tunes. The songs are tight and sharp, but have some nice flourishes too – almost in the later Chad & Jeremy mode, with a real "British through LA" sort of sound. Titles include "RCMPB", "Don't", "Have You Ever", "To Be", "Sunrise #7", "Sparkle", and "Just Try". LP, Vinyl record album

Hall & OatesPast Times Behind ... LP
Chelsea, 1976. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
The earliest roots of one of the greatest blue eyed soul acts ever – material recorded in Philadelphia by a young Daryl Hall and John Oates! The work here even predates the pair's first few excellent Atlantic albums – and is done in a similar stripped-down mode – partly soul, partly singer-songwriter – bridging the earlier roots of both artists in soul-styled vocal groups, but pointing the way towards the bigger market of the 70s. Bert JanschIt Don't Bother Me ... LP
Transatlantic/Superior Viaduct, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Continuing genius from the great Bert Jansch – the singer/songwriter's second album, and one of his most sublime records ever! The album's got an up-close, personal vibe – mostly just Bert's vocals and acoustic guitar, a bit like the earliest albums by Bob Dylan – and like Dylan, Jansch has this approach that's completely his own – very much schooled in older 20th century traditions, but focused on finding a new way forward – with a mix of melodic and harmonic elements that flow from his guitar with effortless ease, and are matched by some beautifully pointed vocals by a singer who sounds unlike anyone else. At times, the tunes have a quality that's almost hypnotic – a bit of a John Fahey vibe in the progressions, but a bit warmer – and titles include "Tinker's Blues", "It Don't Bother Me", "Harvest Your Thoughts Of Love", "Lucky Thirteen", "As The Day Grows Longer Now", "So Long", "900 Miles", and "Ring A Ding Blues". John MayallBlues From Laurel Canyon ... LP
London, 1968. Very Good+ ... $14.99
British blues meets LA's Laurel Canyon – a trans-Atlantic (or is it Pacific?) blend that makes for one of John Mayall's most compelling albums of the 60s! The album was recorded after the breakup of the Blues Breakers group – but it still features strong support from Mick Taylor on guitar – a key factor in the previous combo's sound, given almost even more space here to stand out front with Mayall. Other instrumentation includes bass and drums, plus a bit of tablas – and the overall approach is a lot more spare than other Blues Breakers sets – still bluesy in approach, but with some definite freer-thinking moments too, picked up from a trip to Laurel Canyon that was Mayall's inspiration for the set. Titles include "Walking On Sunset", "Vacation", "Ready To Ride", "Medicine Man", "Miss James", "The Bear", "First Time Alone", and "Fly Tomorrow". LP, Vinyl record album

Rare EarthDreams/Answers ... LP
Verve, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $36.99
The funky blue-eyed debut of Rare Earth – an early Detroit combination of soul, rock, and funk! The group really sprang to fame on Motown right after this early album for Verve – but this set may be even harder and heavier than any of their later records – produced by Dennis Coffey, with a nice blend of fuzz and funk, at a level that's very much like the best Atlantic sounds from Vanilla Fudge – but much more born from the Detroit scene that could give the world The Stooges and Funkadelic at the same time! Many cuts are soul standards, redone with a heavy-drum style that's pretty great – and some of the originals have more of the psych feel, but are graced by some genuinely soulful vocals, often done in harmony style. Titles include "Mothers Oats", "New Rochelle", "Yesterday On Third Avenue", "Red Apple", "Get Ready", "6-3-4-5", and "Sidewalk Cafe". (Soul, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label stereo pressing. Cover has some edge wear.)

RascalsComplete Singles As & Bs (4LP mixed colored vinyl box set) ... LP
Real Gone, Late 60s/Early 70s. Sealed 4LP Box Set ... $43.99
A really groovy set of work by The Rascals – one that gets past some of their other greatest hits collections on the market, to include not just all the weird and wonderful b-sides of their singles, but also some of their great later work for Columbia Records too! The music here is a fantastic evolution in sound – from the early garage soul of the Atlantic material issued under the name of The Young Rascals, to the trippier sounds as the group dropped the "young" from their name, and found an even more spacious, soaring sort of approach – one that only continued to get cooler as the 60s came to an end, and organist Felix Cavaliere took more charge of their sound in the studio. The earliest singles are presented in mono, the later ones in stereo – and the 2CD collection features 47 tracks in all – with titles that include "Slow Down", "Sueno", "Groovin (Spanish version)", "Rainy Day", "Of Course", "Baby I'm Blue", "Jungle Walk", "Hummin Song", "Brother Tree", "Saga Of New York", "Rainy Day", "I Believe", "If You Knew", "Away Away", "Almost Home", "Of Course", and all the hits you might expect! Bruce SpringsteenNebraska ... LP
Columbia, 1982. Very Good+ ... $19.99
The starkest, sparest ever by Bruce Springsteen – sans accompaniment for the most part, having famously opted to release the haunting guitar, voice and harmonica demos as the actual album – and it's devastatingly strong to this day! The hallmark facet is that it's a largely solo acoustic record, the the great thing about that is how distinctively Springsteen sounding it is – with the all the earnestness of his more anthemic material, and more – just done with a sometimes somber, always intimate approach. One of those records that deserves all of the loft praise! Includes "Nebraska", "Atlantic City", "Mansion On The Hill", "Johnny 99", "State Trooper", "Used Cars", "Open All Night", "My Father's House" and "Reason To Believe". LP, Vinyl record album
