✨✧ Eric Burdon & The AnimalsEvery One Of Us ... LP
MGM, 1968. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Another gem from The Animals' overlooked late 60s years on MGM – a time when the group were easily making some of the most inventive music on the label! The styles here are even wider than before – definitely an attempt to showcase "every one of us" that made up the group – in a blend of spacey sounds, gentle folksy moments, and some of the rougher tones of previous MGM records. Many titles were written only by Burdon – a bit of a change from before – and showcase an increased use of acoustic guitar alongside his bleak vocals. Titles include "The Immigrant Lad", "Year Of The Guru", "Serenade To A Sweet Lady", "White Houses", "New York 1963/America 1968", and "Uppers & Downers". CD features a bonus single version of "White Houses". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing. Vinyl plays with a short click on the first track. Cover has surface wear.)

EMI/Abkco, 1964. Near Mint- (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
A very cool early EP from The Animals – the group's second in this format, and never originally issued in the US! The group are at their young, gritty best here – with lots of bluesy currents in the music, thanks to Alan Price on Hammond – topped with soulful vocals from the mighty Eric Burdon, who never fails to blow us away. Titles include the great "I'm Mad Again", plus "Bury My Body", "She Said Yeah", and "I'm In Love". 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Limited 2015 RSD issue. Cover has a small round sticker in front.)

✨✧ Eric Burdon & The AnimalsTwain Shall Meet ... LP
MGM, 1968. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Great later work from The Animals – a set that's not as tripped-out as some of their other late 60s work, and which almost starts to show Eric Burdon's rising love of soul and funk! The sound is still pretty rockish overall – but there's some great use of bass rumbling at the bottom – bringing up a rumbling quality that fits nicely with Burdon's somewhat bleak presentation of the lyrics at various points. Production by Tom Wilson almost has a raspy, lo-fi sort of feel – different than the bluesier roots of the group, and almost a precursor of indie work in decades to come! Titles include the classic "Sky Pilot", plus "Monterey", "Just The Thought", "Closer To The Truth", "No Self Pity", "Orange & Red Beams", and "We Love You Lil". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono white label promo with deep groove! Includes MGM inner sleeve. Cover has small splits on the top & bottom seams, mono sticker on the back.)

A record that has The Animals at the crossroads – working without the piano and organ of Alan Price, but with an even more rising sense of power from Eric Burdon – who's really coming into his own as a singer, and turning out to be a surprisingly great songwriter too! The group still bring in tunes that are from some of their blues and R&B inspirations – but Burdon's phrasing is very personal, and really transforms the material and makes it work wonderfully with the original tunes – on titles that include "Cheating", "She'll Return It", "See See Rider", "Inside Looking Out", "Gin House Blues", "What Am I Living For", "I Put A Spell On You", "Don't Bring Me Down", and "One Monkey Won't Stop The Show". Not a live recording from the mighty Animals, but a set that was issued during a year when the group were taking the American stages by storm – put together from extra material that was only issued on their UK debut album, plus UK Animal Tracks material, and a few singles too! The set's hardly a hodge podge, though – as it was a crucial second full length for the US, and a collection of cuts that really cemented the group's reputation at the time – thanks to the strength of cuts that include "Mess Around", "I Believe To My Soul", "Ain't Got You", "Dimples", "She Said Yeah", "I'm Crying", "Boom Boom", "How You've Changed", and "Let The Good Times Roll". ✨✧ Eric Burdon & The AnimalsLove Is ... LP
MGM, 1968. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic double-length set from The Animals – recorded in LA in the late 60s, and with plenty of great Sunset Strip influences in the mix! The band here is different than before – with Zoot Money handling both organ and piano, plus a bit of vocals, and Andy Summers joining in on guitar – and production is by the group itself, who shake off some of the trippier styles of previous records, and almost go for a "live in studio" sort of sound! There's a confluence of styles here that's really great – some of the blues of the group's roots, bits of Eric Burdon's growing love of soul, and some fuzzier touches as well. Some tracks are quite long jams, and titles include "Gemini", "Madman", "As The Years Go Passing By", "To Love Somebody", and "I'm An Animal". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mother EarthComplete Recordings 1968 to 1970 (Living With The Animals/Make A Joyful Noise/Satisfied) ... CD
Mercury/Wounded Bird, Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A trio of classics from this groundbreaking group! First up is Living With The Animals – fantastic early work from Mother Earth – one of those special late 60s groups who emerged out of the rock, folk, and blues scenes – but who somehow managed to make a very special sound of their own! Part of the group's strength is the lovely Tracey Nelson – a singer who could have been a soul artist if she wanted – but who works here with a looser approach to generic conventions as she moves through a number of different modes – sometimes stepping aside for the group's lead singer, R Powell St John Jr, who also plays a bit of harmonica. Instrumentation is given some stronger currents from a combo that features Mike Bloomfield on guitar, Barry Goldberg on organ, and Luis Gasca on trumpet – and titles include "Marvel Group", "Mother Earth", "It Won't Be Long", "Down So Low", "The Kingdom Of Heaven", and "My Love Will Never Die". Make A Joyful Noise is an album that has slightly fuller backings than their debut, but in a way that only seems to bring out more of the soulful currents of their sound! The mix of rural inspiration and tighter presentation is a great illustration of the changing North Cali style of the period – and no surprise, a young Boz Scaggs is in the group, providing rhythm guitar next to the vocals of Tracy Nelson and R Powell St John. A few country legends provide extra support on fiddle, dobro, and steel – balanced nicely by a strong horn section too – on titles that include "Stop The Train", "Soul Of The Man", "Blues For The Road", "Come On & See", "I The Fly", "Wait Wait Wait", "I Wanna Be Your Mama Again", and "Then I'll Be Moving On". Last up is Satisfied – countrified rock from Tracy Nelson and Mother Earth – done in a warm and sincere style that goes way beyond any of the cliches of the genre! There's something about the way the group put together the tunes that really makes us like this one – an honesty that's not bogged down in any hippy dippy expectations, and which never tries to be anything other that what it is. And yes, that's not much of a good description of the set – but it's also our way of identifying the uniqueness that set Mother Earth apart from a lot of their contemporaries. Titles include "Satisfied", "Groovy Way", "Andy's Song", "Ruler Of My Heart", "This Feeling", and "You Won't Be Passing Here No More". CD

CalifoneRoots And Crowns (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2006. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
Rootsy noise sweetened by raggedly alluring melodicism from Califone – still one of the most vital and idiosyncratic groups of their time! We can no long heap the experimentalist tag on Califone – if we ever really could. They've got quite a sonic blueprint laid down after 8 or so albums, but they do continue to surprise us. Roots And Crowns is a strange and compelling blend of crackling, somehow rural sounds & percussion, strummed and sometimes chugging guitars, pastoral found-sound atmosphere and singing that's no more or less part of the ether than any other element. A timeless piece of work! Tracks include "Pink & Sour", "Spider's House" (which references Brian Wilson at his furthest out stage), "The Eye You Lost In The Crusades" (which references Nick Drake a bit in the guitar), "A Chinese Actor", "Our Kitten Sees Ghosts", "The Orchids", "Black Metal Valentine", "Rose Petal Ear", "3legged Animals", "If You Would" and more. The album that rocked a million dorm rooms back in the 60s – and for good reason, too – given that the title track is a side-long, totally jamming monster – the kind of track that was really revolutionary at the time, and which still has a hell of an impact all these many years later! "In A Gadda Da Vida" was shortened to a single – with the big hook intact – but this classic album version runs for 17 minutes in length, and has the group doing all these cool jams with their instruments – all the animals in the garden of Eden talking to each other (or at least that's what our addled teenaged minds always thought!) Shorter tracks are mighty nice too – a heady, heavy brew of Hammond and fierce guitar from Erik Brann, on cuts all penned by group leader Doug Ingle. Titles include "Termination", "My Mirage", "Flowers & Roses", and "Most Anything You Want". CD

Talking HeadsFear Of Music ... LP
Sire, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $34.99
A really tremendous album from The Talking Heads – and a set that moves far past their already-great early records, to really show a rhythmic complexity we never would have expected! Brian Eno is helping the group in the studio again here, and the record really shows both David Byrne and Eno's late 70s fascination with global rhythms – elements that are often used in spare, simple little ways to really help inflect the tunes with a playful imagination that goes way beyond the colder post-punk and new wave of most of their contemporaries! The balance of previous aesthetics with these new grooves is wonderful – heard to great effect on the classic club cut "I Zimbra" – but brewing up strongly underneath on gems that include "Mind", "Paper", "Cities", "Life During Wartime", "Memories Can't Wait", "Air", "Heaven", "Animals", "Electric Guitar", and "Drugs". Far Out/MGM, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99
A surprisingly great pairing of talents – the post-Animals Eric Burdon on vocals, and early grooves from Cali funk legends War – coming together here in a blend that still holds up beautifully after all these years! Burdon was already getting pretty soulful on the last few Animals albums on MGM – and he really advances that style here when working with War's great grooves – some of the grittiest, nastiest, most stretched out work of their career – especially on some of the album's nicely long tracks. There's some nice Latin currents to the music at times, and the group vocalize alongside Burdon at times – and titles include a long version of "Paint It Black", plus "Bare Back Ride", "Sun/Moon", "Pretty Colors", "Gun", "Nuts Seeds & Life", "They Can't Take Away Our Music", and "Spirit". VariousWinter Of Discontent – Presented By Bob Stanley & Pete Wiggs ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $12.99 20.99
A stunning selection of tracks from a moment when things really got interesting on the UK scene – when the straighter guitar lines of early punk gave way to more unfamiliar instrumentation, unusual production, and offbeat rhythms – yet almost always with a really raw, stripped-down feel – thanks to the indie placement of most of these cuts! Some of the material is work that would later become known as post-punk, and referenced as a huge influence on later groups – but as with most Bob Stanley/Pete Wiggs collections, there's something here that goes way past the ordinary – as the set list is filled with all these great twists and turns, and some wonderful surprises that come from cuts that were issued on some of the much smaller labels of the period, compared to bigger indies like Rough Trade or Fast Product. The music's got a raw, experimental edge throughout – and Stanley and Wiggs provide plenty of illuminating notes – to support this package of 24 tracks that includes "Somebody" by Frankie's Crew, "Small Hours" by Karl's Empty Body, "Work" by Blue Orchids, "Violence Grows" by Fatal Microbes, "Where Were You" by The Mekons, "The Terraplane Fixation" by Animals & Men, "Bored Housewives" by Androids Of Mu, "Can't Cheat Karma" by Zounds, "No Forgetting" by Manchester Mekon, "Drink Problem" by Thin Yoghurts, "The Sideways Man" by The Digital Dinosaurs, "Different Story" by Tarzan, "Production Line" by The Door & The Window, and "The Window's Broken" by Human Cabbages. A few tunes are instrumental – as you might expect from a soundtrack, and the songs hold together well with similar themes – and those cuts are mixed with some wonderful vocal numbers that have Ray Davies working at the top of his game – that picture postcard way of putting over a scene or a story – served up in titles that include the excellent "God's Children", an instrumental version of "Lola", and the cuts "Animals In The Zoo", "Whip Lady", "Dreams", "Helga", and "Willesden Green". Munster (Spain), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible batch of prime garage rock era nuggets from the Peruvian scene – fuzzy gems by the Saicos! The Saicos bring a sense of menace to these tunes – with a guitar tone touched with an eerie vibe, and lead vocals that are really piercing and gravelly in that instills this primordial edge that needs to be heard to be believed – but that balance it off with some moddish, British invasion grooves, too. The overall sound manages to blend both the heavy menace of cult acts like the Monks and the Seeds with the tunefulness of the Animals – and clear precursor the garage punk for decades to come! Titles include "Come On (Ven Aqui)", "Ana", "Demolicion", "Lonely Star (Estrella Solitaria)", "Cememterio", "Te Amo", "Fugitivo De Alcatraz", "Salvaje", "El Entierro De Los Gatos", "Besando A Otra" and "Intensamente". ✨✧ Bob DylanSlow Train Coming ... Cassette
Columbia, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first album in Dylan's so-called "Christian Period", but it's not really the uber-dramatic departure from the "old" Dylan that it was treated as at the time – gospel soul backing vocals and testifying lyricism for sure, but it sounds more like gospel has come to Dylan than it sounds like Dylan has "gone gospel". Slow Train Coming has a focused approach, ala Blood On The Tracks, even if this train doesn't come close to crossing over onto those particular tracks – and the return to a leaner, more focused vibe is welcome one. It's got stellar studio players in the mix, and producer Jerry Wexler's production touches on a soul sound, but smartly hews to Dylan's vocal style and lyrical focus. Dylan's high bar for a masterpiece given his trailblazing past didn't give this record or the following couple much a chance to succeed on their own merits back in the day, but all these years later...wow, this is really good, passionate stuff. Includes "Gotta Serve Somebody", "Precious Angel", "I Believe In You", "Slow Trait", "Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking", "Do Right To Me Baby (Do Unto Others)", "When You Gonna Wake Up", "Man Gave Name To All The Animals", "When He Returns". ✨✧ War & Eric BurdonEric Burdon Declares War ... LP
MGM, 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
War became so popular on their own in later years that it's easy to forget how they first sprung onto the soul charts – here, in an album of many styles that was put together by the wayward Eric Burdon after the dissolution of The Animals. We have to admit that Burdon was a genius to hook onto the rich talents of this LA combo – even though he really didn't know what to do with them on this record. Part of the album's an homage to Roland Kirk, part is an extended reworking of "Tobacco Road", and part is an overly-long bluesy passage called "Blues For Memphis Slim". Fortunately, the record also includes the monster groover "Spill The Wine", one of the first big crossover tracks to popularize the Chicano funk sound of LA – and a great little groover that still hooks us in today. Domino, 1980s/1999. Used 5CDs ... Out Of Stock
A very sharp 5CD set that brings together some of the best work that Robert Wyatt did during the 80s! This stuff is always criminally overlooked (perhaps because it's a bit subtler than his earlier stuff) – which is a shame, because it's fantastically beautiful, and filled with amazing moments of warmth, honesty, and creativity. The box is very nicely done, and a nifty treasure chest that includes tracks separated as Bits, Pieces, Work In Progress, Animals and Remixes and titles such as "Shipbuilding (Remastered Version", "Was A Friend", "Yesterday Man", "I'm A Believer (Previously Unreleased Extended Version", "Yolanda", "Amber & The Amberines", and the 19+ minute soundtrack to The Animal's Film and more. ✨✧ VariousBo Diddley Is A Songwriter ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s/1970s/1980s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Here's a compilation that's going after our hearts! As revolutionary as the oft-imitated Bo Diddley beat was in early rock & roll, he doesn't get the credit he deserves for the far reaching impact of his songwriting – having been covered by everyone from Buddy Holly, The New York Dolls, The Shadows Of Night, The Animals, The Pretty Things, Captain Beefheart, Los Lobos and so many more artists of all stripes over the years! This excellent set from Ace Records does a fantastic job of showing not only how far his influence reaches, but also how stylistically adaptable his tunes are. Swamp rock, proto punk, bluesy soul and more. Very well done and each cut is a keeper, with 24 tracks in all: "Bo Diddley" by Buddy Holly, "Crackin Up" by The Gants, "Pills" by New York Dolls, "Road Runner" by The Zombies, "Diddy Wah Diddy" by Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band, "Diddley Daddy" by The British Walkers, "You Don't Love Me (You Don't Care)" by The Birds, "Who Do You Love" by Ronnie Hawkins & The Hawks and many more. ✨✧ KinksPercy ... LP
Pye/BMG, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A great set of tracks by the Kinks – originally written as the soundtrack for a film that barely saw the light of day – yet presented here as a classic late 60s album that's up there with the other gems from the same period as Arthur and Village Green! ✨✧ Sauveur MalliaSpatial & Co ... LP
Tele Music/Be With (UK), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A bass-heavy sound library set from the wonderful French composer Sauveur Mallia – a set that's really different than some of the thinner, more keyboard-heavy work of the period – although there's plenty of keyboards in the mix too! Some tracks definitely have that coming cosmic style that made the French space disco scene of the time so great – but those elements are also nicely complicated by Mallia's approach, not just when the bass gets funky, but also when it gets all low and moody too! The whole thing's totally great – a real standout from the legendary Tele Music label – with titles that include "Bass For Love", "Cosmic News", "Meteor One", "Star Odyssey", "OVNI Telex", "All The Bass", "Space Alert", and "Animals Bass".
