✨✧ PiranhaHeaded In The Right Direction ... LP
Amazon South/P-Vine (Japan), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Bassy funk from the early 80s southern scene – the only album we've ever seen from Piranha, and a gem of a tight little set! The groove here is roughly in the mode of some of the better-known northern club groups in the post-disco years – crafted with lots of boogie bass on the bottom and tight rhythms throughout the set. But there's also a style that's a bit more in the ensemble funk mode here too – one that still keeps most of the instrumentation acoustic, and which has a bit less keyboards and electric percussion than other boogie-era work. Titles include "Funk-a-sol", "One Sided Love", "Let's Get It Back Together", "Good Time Lady", "Headed In The Right Direction", and "Let Your Feelings Show". (Soul, Rock) LP, Vinyl record album

Nino Tempo & April StevensHey Baby – The Nino Tempo & April Stevens Anthology ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
Groovy 60s pop from the sunny brother & sister duo of Nino Tempo & April Stevens – wonderful stuff that's crafted as sweetly as can be, encapsulating influences from a wide range of pop styles of the time – and it still sounds great! This anthology features a bunch of the their best duo numbers, as well as some earlier and later separate projects we'd never heard before. 24 tracks in all: "Deep Purple", "All Strung Out", "Sweet And Lovely", "Follow Me", "Hey Baby", "Out Of Nowhere", "Wings Of Love", "Lovin' Valentine" (April Stevens), "Sister James" (Nino Tempo & 5th Ave Sax), "Hey Baby", "Honeysuckle Rose", "Whispering", "Amazon River" and many more. ✨✧ MaximillianMaximillian (2023 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
ABC/Riding Easy, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really messed-up blend of soul, rock, and blues – done in a style that's very much in keeping with the genre-busting Fillmore scene of the late 60s! Maximillian are a trio who run through Hendrix-like guitars, deep soul styled vocals, and bluesy riffing – often in the course of the same number – and the album's produced and arranged by Teddy Vann with a really wonderful approach that keeps things from getting too sloppy, and which propels the record forward without falling into the kind of traps that you'd get from other groups of this nature. Titles include "Moby's House", "The Road Rat", "Naked Ape", "Kickin 9 to 5", "Scar On My Memory", and "Little Amazon". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Roxy MusicStranded ... CD
EG/Virgin (UK), 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Roxy Music's third album, and a record that really shows that the group have found a tremendous voice of their own – quite a thing to do, given the heady brew of records that were coming out in the year of 1973! There's a style here that's familiar enough to draw the listener in – maybe some echoes of territory you might hear in work from David Bowie, Lou Reed, John Cale, or the now-solo Brian Eno – but once inside, you find yourself in a completely different world – a mad blend of guitars and strings, saxophones and electronics, all used in these ways that are tuneful enough to be catchy, but also deeply unsettling too – as are the lead vocals of Bryan Ferry, who comes across like some older European singer who's been let out of the madhouse for the sessions. This isn't a singles-heavy record, but instead an album-length journey that never gets old, even as the years move on – and which is as powerful to new ears discovering the record for the first time as to longtime fans. Titles include "Street Life", "Just Like You", "Amazona", "Psalm", "Serenade", "A Song For Europe", "Mother Of Pearl", and "Sunset". CD
