✨✧ Brian EnoBefore & After Science ... CD
Virgin/Astralwerks (UK), 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
The final album in Brian Eno's initial burst of genius in the 70s – and the last of those records to feature real rock songs, with vocals and lyrics! Eno steps off even further here from the territory he first explored on Another Green World – referencing some of his more private sonic experiments, but also still keeping things in a relatively tuneful mode – yet also somewhat personal, too – maybe a bit like Robert Wyatt at his early solo best. The record features contributions from some of his hipper contemporaries – Phil Manzanera and Robert Fripp on guitars, Fred Frith on "cascade guitars", Jaki Liebezeit and Phil Collins on drums (back when Phil was still hip!) – and more familiar musical partners Percy Jones on bass and Rhett Davies as the engineer. The whole album's brilliantly laid out – from fierceness to ambience, and back again – on titles that include "No One Receiving", "Kurt's Rejoinder", "King Lead Hat", "Spider & I", "Engery Fools The Magician", "Backwater", and "Here He Comes". ✨✧ ShipContemporary Folk Music Journey ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
A surprising late folk entry in the Elektra Records catalog – recorded in the early 70s, and with some sublime production from the great Gary Usher! The sound is definitely contemporary folk, as promised in the title – but there's more of a singer/songwriter sensibility too – more mature songs than straighter folk, made even more so by Usher's production – and harmonies on some of the vocals that almost recall the post-folk world over at Atlantic. Steve Melshenker and Steve Cowan wrote the album, and do most of the vocals – and both play acoustic guitar too – alongside piano, flute, dobro, bass, and cello, which makes for a warm acoustic sound. Titles include "The Ship", "The Order", "The Man", "The Calm", "The Storm", "The Return", and "The Reason". (Folk/Country, Rock) CD

✨✧ Dusty SpringfieldFaithful (with bonus track) ... CD
Atlantic/Real Gone, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
A never-heard third Dusty Springfield album for Atlantic Records – issued here for the first time ever, and very much in the same soulful spirit as her other records for the label! Springfield tackled Memphis and Philly soul on her previous two albums for Atlantic – and here, she hits a New York groove with producer Jeff Barry – who is equally well-suited to carry that special balance that Dusty brings to her music – that mix of British pop roots with a real understanding of the American scene – a quality that Springfield never had as strongly after these early years. Titles are a varied lot, but all come together with a really unified feel, thanks to Dusty's strengths as a performer – and tunes include "Haunted", "Someone Who Cares", "Natchez Trace", "You've Got A Friend", "All The King's Horses", and "I'll Be Faithful". Crosby Stills Nash & YoungDeja Vu ... CD
Atlantic, 1970. Used ... $2.99
One of those records that was a classic from the moment it was first released – the legendary second effort from the trio of David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash – with added bonus of Neil Young in the mix, which gives the whole thing a current of darkness that's completely mindblowing – especially in comparison to the harmonies of the quartet! These aren't the vocal patterns of the Sunshine Pop generation of a few years before – and CSNY find a way to capture all the darkness of the fading light of the 60s, while finding a special space for more thoughtful, sensitive sounds that never would have gotten a chance a few years before. Every track's a classic – and titles include "Carry On", "Our House", "Almost Cut My Hair", "Deja Vu", "Country Girl", "Everybody I Love You", "Woodstock", and "Teach Your Children". CD

Grateful DeadSteal Your Face ... CD
Grateful Dead (UK), 1976. Used ... $14.99 19.99
Prime mid 70s live Dead from a monumental series of shows at Winterland in late October, 1974! Steal Your Face is something of a benchmark in the official Dead archives, as it not only captures the band during their "farewell" run before going on hiatus, it was also the final album on their own Grateful Dead Records label in it's original incarnation when it first came out in 1976. Historical significance aside, it's just a great snapshot of the band at a peak level, with "The Promised Land", "Cold Rain & Snow", "Around And Around", "Stella Blue", "Ship Of Fools", "Big River", "El Paso", "Sugaree", "I Must Have Been The Roses", "Casey Jones" and more. CD
(Late 80s UK pressing. Booklet has a touch of aging.)

✨✧ Led ZeppelinLed Zeppelin IV ... CD
Atlantic, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
Hard rock perfected! It's around Led Zeppelin IV that you can easily say that the group moved up from being incredibly great to flat-out legendary – really in a class by themselves, although maybe they'd already reached that point with the sublime sounds of the previous three records! There's a darkness here – and a sense of magick too – an eerie new energy that still has all the balls-out rock power of before, but which has the group moving into this heady territory that's really all their own. Every song is a classic – and tracks include "Black Dog", "Stairway To Heaven", "Rock And Roll", "Misty Mountain Hop", "When The Levee Breaks", "Going To California", "Four Sticks", and "Battle Of Evermore". CD

✨✧ Boz ScaggsBoz Scaggs ... CD
Atlantic, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever solo set from the great Boz Scaggs – done after a few key early performances with The Steve Miller Band – and with a style that's even more soulful than some of Scaggs' later work! The style is unabashedly soul-based – as the set was recorded at Muscle Shoals, with Duane Allman on dobro and Eddie Hinton on guitar – in a mode that's more Stax Records than the smoother groove of any of Boz's bigger hits of the 70s – even though those are pretty darn great too! The shift from Bay Area to southern soul is a great one for the singer – who really shines on titles that include "Waiting For A Train", "Loan Me A Dime", "I'm Easy", "I'll Be Long Gone", and "Now You're Gone". (Soul, Rock) CD

✨✧ Tin HouseTin House (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/Lion, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
A hard rock trio with a hell of a sound – heard here on their one and only album from the 70s – a surprising major label debut on Epic Records, with top-shelf production from Rick Derringer! The album's got a searing burn right from the start – quite a heady brew for this young trio, who come on with the guitar complexities of Johnny Winter at times, and kind of the brooding, bassy bottom you might hear from the James Gang ag their best – although Tin House also have this more youthful, more sneering vibe too – one that's completely their own, and which has made this obscure debut a lost treasure for hard rock collectors over the decades! Titles include "I Want Your Body", "Be Good & Be Kind", "Personal Gain", "Jezebel Give Me Your Lovin", "Lady Of The Silent Opera", "Tomorrow", and "You've Gone Too Far". Beautiful reissue – with bonus tracks that include "Be Good & Be Kind (mono)", "I Want Your Body (mono)", and unreleased tunes "Understand" and "Thanks To My Friends". CD
Also available Tin House (with bonus tracks) ... CD 5.99
