✨✧ Deep PurpleDeep Purple In Rock (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Warner (Japan), 1970. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Deep Purple may be asking a lot to knock the faces of the presidents off Mount Rushmore, and put up their own images instead – but given the force of this classic early 70s set, they may well have the musical power on their own to carve up a whole mountainside! The album's a ripper right from the start – a tight barrage of fierce guitars and heavy drums from the legendary lineup that included Roger Glover, Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillian, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice – a group so tight, so tremendous, the only way to proper describe them is to encourage you to drop the needle on a classic gem like this! A non-stop barrage from start to finish – with tracks that include "Speed King", "Bloodsucker", "Child In Time", Into The Fire", "Flight Of The Rat", and "Living Wreck". CD
(Out of print SHMCD pressing.)

DioLast In Line ... CD
Warner, 1984. Used ... $8.99
The second of Dio's twin masterpieces – a second album knockout that followed Holy Diver by a single year! The biggest difference this time out is the addition of full time keyboard player Claude Schnell to the band, making Dio a quintet – but what the keyboards do NOT do is air out the heaviness. This remains a headbanging classic, with songs as heavy as any in the Dio canon. Like they did on Holy Diver, the band balances a melodic sensibility with heavy rock in a way that would prove hugely influential – we can't imagine the quietly melodic to massively heavy transitions on Metallica's Master Of Puppets LP could've been what they are without the opening minute of the title track here, but this whole thing is a win – with "We Rock", "Mystery", Breathless", "I Speed At Night", "One Night In The City", "Evil Eyes", "Eat Your Heart Out" and "Egypt (The Chains Are On)". ✨✧ Elliott SmithEither/Or ... CD
Kill Rock Stars, 1998. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the best, most influential indie singer-songwriter records of the 90s – and maybe the best ever by the late, great Elliot Smith! In the noisy indie rock early 90s, vulnerable, quietly-recorded, largely solo acoustic confessionals were not par for the course, but Elliot Smith was by no means an average indie rocker. It was pretty devastating stuff, even before Elliott's death, and especially so in retrospect – but there's so much heart and such a careful ear for intimate pop songwriting, it's never a depressing listen. A true classic. Includes "Speed Trials", "Alameda", "Ballad Of Big Nothing", "Between The Bars", "No Name No. 5", "Rose Parade", "Angeles", "Cupid's Trick", "2:45 AM", "Say Yes" and more. CD

✨✧ David BowieStage (quad-fold edition) ... CD
Virgin, 1978. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous live set cut during the height of David Bowie's years in Berlin – and the kind of performance that showed that his more experimental work from this time could be every bit as appealing as the classics! The first half of the set features some amazing numbers from the Heroes and Low years – presented here with some darker orchestrations that sound really wonderful, and which slightly recast the styles of the tunes on the albums. The second half mixes in some older classics with a few surprising bits – making for the kind of "star appeal" that must have been welcome to more mainstream Bowie fans during these more obscure years. 20 tracks in all – including "Beauty & The Beast", "Breaking Glass", "Speed Of Life", "What In The World", "Heroes", "Warszawa", "Be My Wife", "Soul Love", "Star", "Art Decade", "Alabama Song", "TVC 15", and "Ziggy Stardust". CD

✨✧ Vic ChesnuttLittle ... CD
Texas Hotel, 1990. Used ... Out Of Stock
Vic Chesnutt's debut, produced by Vic fan and champion Michael Stipe of REM, who smartly puts Vic's distinctive drawl and unvarnished guitar strumming front-and-center! His voice and these songs might not be conventionally pretty, but they sure are beautiful in their one-of-a-kind, uncompromising approach to the singer-songwriter genre. Recorded in a single day, Little is a defining early effort that would set the stage for a remarkable run of wonderful recordings by Vic, who lived to see his work loved and appreciated by peers and devoted fanbase, if never coming close to a mainstream breakthrough. Vic's voice, guitar, and the pictures they paint are the main thing here, with some occasional, spare bits of keyboards and backing vocals, adding just a bit of texture. You either "get" Vic or you don't. We we think he was a genius. Includes "Isadora Duncan", "Danny Carlisle", "Mr. Reilly", "Rabbit Box", "Speed Racer", "Soft Picasso", "Geppetto", "Bakersfield" and more. This great 2016 pressing on New West has 5 bonus tracks: "Bernadette", "Vernon", "Acting So Bad", "Miss Mary" and "Elberton Fair". CD

✨✧ HawkwindWarrior On The Edge Of Time ... CD
Griffin, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
A stone classic from the legendary Hawkwind – a set that's steeped in all their best space rock modes of the 70s – yet which also has a wonderfully sharp sort of focus too! Keyboards, guitars, and drums soar to the skies right from the start – prefacing an intensity that so many others would later cop from the group, but never get this right – quite possibly because the simple 70s production really helps bring all the best elements right down on the money! In ways, the set almost echoes earlier psych performance and production – yet there's also a cleaner, clearer vibe going on – one that magically steps around the overindulgence of prog and the thinness of some of the later psych of the next decade. Titles include "The Demented Man", "Magnu", "Standing At The Edge", "Warriors", "Kings Of Speed", and "The Wizard Blew His Horn". CD

✨✧ AnthraxState Of Euphoria ... CD
Island/Megaforce, 1988. Used ... Out Of Stock
Essential late 80s thrash from one the genres linchpin bands! State Of Euphoria draws the short straw when it comes to critical recognition of the band's 80s output, thanks in no small part to the fact that it's the full length follow up to Among The Living. It's hard to live up to the legacy of the one of the greatest American heavy metal albums of all time, but we're feeling pretty euphoric revisiting this one after all these years! Anthrax always leaned more on trudging riffs than lightning speed or showy guitar solos, arguably making them the most fun of thrash's vaunted "Big 4" and this one holds up better than it's given credit for. Includes their classic cover of Trust's "Antisocial", "Be All, End All", "Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind", "Schism", "Misery Loves Company", "13" and more. CD

Nems, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
Black Sabbath going strong – very much in their own space by this point in their career, setting a sound that countless others would try to follow – but never match for fierceness like this! The fuzz is definitely turned up to 11, the rhythms move at a breakneck speed, and Ozzy's vocals have all the mean, sinister sounds that set a generation on fire – plenty of energy to fill up long tracks that include "Megalomania", "Hole In The Sky", "Symptom Of The Universe", "Supertzar", "Am I Going Insane", and "The Writ". ✨✧ PylonPylon (Gyrate/Chomp/Razz Tape/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
DB Recs/New West, Early 80s. Used 4CD ... Out Of Stock
An insane collection of work – one that hugely expands the two-album legacy of this legendary American group! The box first includes their debut, Gyrate – overlooked genius from the scene in Athens, GA – served up by a group who also borrow plenty of influences from the UK post-punk world too! Pylon are heavy on bass that might be borrowed from Young Marble Giants, but then turned up in sound and speed – matched with these great guitar lines that are complex in sound, but right on the money in terms of placement – all topped with the vocals of Vanessa Biscoe Hay – a singer who's nicely understated, and as much a part of the sonic mix as the other elements in the group! Titles include "Feast On My Heart", "Precaution", "Driving School", "Gravity", "Working Is No Problem", "Stop It", "Danger", and "Read A Book". Next, the set features the album Chomp – a fantastic record from the Athens, GA scene of the early 80s – served up by a group who maybe never hit the fame of REM or B-52s, but who are maybe even groovier overall! Pylon have a strong bassline that almost seems borrowed from the Brit post-punk years, but also mix it with some catchier lyrics by a female singer – but one who's often nicely down in the mix, right alongside the jagged guitars and splashy drums – all of which create a sound that's like the best of the indie underworld of the period! The group almost feel like they would have been right at home on Factory or Rough Trade – which is partly why they maybe got more attention overseas than here – and the titles include "Italian Movie Theme", "Spider", "Yo Yo", "Buzz", "No Clocks", "Altitude", and "M Train". The set also features the rare Razz Tape – Pylon's first recordings, a set of 13 tracks that were unreleased at the time, and which predate their first 7" single! Then, the set also features the Extra CD – with 11 more tracks including some pre-Pylon work, the rare song "Recent Title", the original mix of "Crazy", and some other unreleased studio and live tracks. PLUS, the whole thing comes with a huge 12" square, hardbound book – 216 pages of notes and images, all in color – with a huge amount of essays, interviews, and other material on the group. CD

✨✧ RezillosCan't Stand The Rezillos/Mission Accomplished But The Beat Goes On ... CD
Sire, 1978/1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
First up is Can't Stand The Rezillos – a record with guitars fast and hard enough to almost be late 70s punk rock, but which often comes off with a more playful, whimsical new wave sort of approach! Tracks are short and hook-heavy – produced by Bob Clearmountain with that razor-edged quality he brought to his best work of the time – and the trading off of lead vocals between Fay Fife and Eugene Reynolds makes the record hang nicely in a space between Blondie and The Ramones! Titles include "Flying Saucer Attach", "No", "Top Of The Pops", "2000 AD", "It Gets Me", "Glad All Over", and "Cold Wars". Next is Mission Accomplished – a fierce little live set from The Rezillos – one that comes as quite a surprise, since the group had only issued one studio set before – but a great choice overall, as the live setting really seems to set them on fire! Things here are harder, faster, and sharper than on their debut – with more punk speed and energy in the guitars, even if the songs themselves are more in a power pop mode – as tuneful as they are quick-moving! The concert was actually the group's last – recorded at a time when they'd announced a breakup – and that maybe gives the whole thing an urgency that was missing before, and which really makes us wish they'd kept recording. Titles include "Top Of The Pops"," Mystery Action", "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonite", "Thunderbirds Are Go", "No", "Teenbeat", "Ballroom Blitz", "Destination Venus", and "Culture Shock". CD

Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A well-done set that really goes past the obvious choices of cuts from the early years of the UK punk scene – much more indie and obscure than some of the other collections of this nature – with a very deep dig into the world of the 7" single! The gems within are partially pictured on the front cover – and as you can see, these aren't the big hits of the punk generation – but a whole host of obscure tracks issued on small labels – collected together here in a full length set that really opens up this side of the scene! Titles include "So Many Ways" by the Electric Chairs, "I'm A Mess" by Stormtrooper, "Venus Eccentric" by Neon Hearts, "Speed Freak" by V2, "Fascist DJ" by The Exile, "Feel So Good" by Lucy, "NME" by Dansette Damage, "Naive" by The Killjoys, "Cybernetic Surgery" by The Cybermen, "Bottles" by Neon, "Help I'm Trapped" by The Carpettes, "Priorities" by Trash, "Saints & Sinners" by Johnny & The Self Abusers, and "Jerkin" by The Drive. Motorhead tearing it up in the early 80s and arguably hitting their absolute peak – the final album with the classic trio lineup of Lemmy, Fast Eddie Clarke and Philthy Animal Taylor – capping off one of the most trailblazing periods for any band in rock & roll history! Iron Fist is as unrelenting and stubbornly gruff as the preceding Overkill and Ace Of Spades LPs, a loud and clear statement that this band was committed in full to the sound they created. ✨✧ Grateful DeadWorkingman's Dead ... CD
Warner, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the first giant hits by the Grateful Dead – and a record that has the group tightening things up a bit more, and stepping into some of the country-tinged territory of The Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers! Turns out, the move is a great one – as the songs come across with a real down to earth charm that maybe humanizes the group a bit more for the uninitiated listener – a mix of northern Cali pastoral with some of the musical dexterity they'd brought with them from the Haight – folded together perfectly, with a quality that's made the album one of their best-remembered over the decades. Titles include "Uncle John's Band" – maybe their biggest hit at the time – plus "Dire Wolf", "New Speedway Boogie", "Cumberland Blues", "Casey Jones", "Easy Wind", "High Time", and "Black Peter". CD

✨✧ MotorheadOverkill (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Metal Is/Sanctuary, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
Motorhead at their thunderingly heavy, breakneak speediest, shrapnel-voiced best! For a band that's best enjoyed for it's raw and direct brute force and belligerent swagger, it's still important to approach with a sense of perspective – and know that before Motorhead, heavy rock just did not sound like this. Many, many tried to follow Lemmy's lead afterwards, with varying creative success, but we'll always go back to the trailblazers. Includes the all time classic title tune, second only to "Ace Of Spades" in their canon, plus "Stay Clean", "(I Won't) Pay Your Price", "I'll Be Your Best", "Capricorn", "No Class", "Tear Ya Down", "Metropolis" and "Limb From Limb".
