The core material here is from 45s that Boris issues in the early 70s – the kind of heavy grooves that have made him as much of a legend with funk collectors as reggae fans – but the tracks are taken to very different territory than the originals, in keeping with the dub promised in the title – yet with a sense of variety that's very different than other dub albums of this nature! Currents of American soul come into play as much as reggae roots – and instrumentation and rhythms vary nicely throughout, which really keeps things interesting. The all time classic from Junior Murvin – as essential as any late 70s reggae! Production-wise, Police And Thieves is among Scratch's finest moments, from the most monumental period in Perry's career, during the height of the Black Ark. The title track needs no introduction from us, and the rest of the record is solid, funky roots rock, at a level Murvin would not match again in his career. His sweet falsetto is draped in the dense, murky production that carved a niche in history for Perry. Tracks like "Roots Train" and "False Teaching" are the embodiment of crucial, and the album is filled with other great cuts like the now classic title track, "Rescue Jah Children", "Tedious", "Easy Task" and "I Was Appointed". One wonders why when the original King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown album is so heavy, that you'd want another dub version, but one spin of this special reissue package and you'll be convinced. Altogether different dubs and versions of many of the same rhythm cuts as that watershed dub LP only prove that the whole concept of "versioning", and cutting multiple dubs of the same rhythms (usually to service selectors and sound systems who needed unique tracks) was pure genius on the part of Jamaican producers. Add that to the sheer weight of the rhythms used here, and you've got a formula for a potent set! Once again, the producers at Pressure Sounds have dug up some beautiful gems, finding unique versions of H. Swaby's melodica dancing over thundering Rockers' rhythms and taking a dip now and again in a bucket of reverb & echoplex. Sweet early 80s tracks from the legendary Bunny Striker Lee – work that shows him stepping effortlessly into the dancehall modes of the time – still a master of rhythm, and of finding the right sort of talents to add to his sound!
