✨✧ El Michels Affair & Liam BaileyEkundayo Inversions ... LP
Big Crown, 2021. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A really new setting for the vocals of singer Liam Bailey – and one that's a bit different for El Michels Affair! The group here are still very funky, and filled with all the fantastic sonic touches that we've always loved from leader Leon Michels – but the setting is more in a reggae mode, with lots of dubby elements at the bottom that are balanced out by soulful falsetto vocals from Liam – sometimes in a way that's heavily processed, sometimes a bit more straight up in the mix! As always with El Michels, the whole thing is like hearing the sounds of the past, but refracted with a unique contemporary vision – topped off here with guest work from Lee Scratch Perry and Black Thought too. Titles include "Conquer & Divide", "Ugly Truths", "Faded", "Lucky Man", "I Love NY", "Superstar", "Angel Face", "Walk With Me", "King", and "No One Else". (Deep Funk, Reggae) LP, Vinyl record album
(Black vinyl pressing. Cover is bent a bit at the top left corner.)

✨✧ Augustus PabloEl Rockers ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Essential! One wonders why when the original King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown album is so heavy, that you'd want another dub version, but one spin of this special reissue package and you'll be convinced. Altogether different dubs and versions of many of the same rhythm cuts as that watershed dub LP only prove that the whole concept of "versioning", and cutting multiple dubs of the same rhythms (usually to service selectors and sound systems who needed unique tracks) was pure genius on the part of Jamaican producers. Add that to the sheer weight of the rhythms used here, and you've got a formula for a potent set! Once again, the producers at Pressure Sounds have dug up some beautiful gems, finding unique versions of H. Swaby's melodica dancing over thundering Rockers' rhythms and taking a dip now and again in a bucket of reverb & echoplex. Insightful liner notes and a beautiful sleeve complete this package of 17 massive instrumental tracks, including "Black Gunn", "New Style", "El Rockers", "Skanking Easy", "Tribalist" and "Cassava Piece". ✨✧ Mighty SparrowTatoo Woman ... LP
National/Think (Japan), Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Very cool work from Mighty Sparrow – a calypso set, but one cut at a time when the music was fading from the mainstream – which allows Sparrow to keep things nice and raw, and deliver lyrics that have the same sort of bite as some of the best island sounds from the early days! Many tracks here are originals, and Sparrow also delivers some cool covers too – all with jazzy instrumentation that echoes some of the styles of early mento, as saxes come into a blend of romping piano, percussion, and the singer's own guitar. Titles include "Unto Negro", "English Diplomacy", "Tattoo Woman", "Jack", "Under My Skin", "El Reloj", and "Big Bamboo". (Global Grooves, Reggae) LP, Vinyl record album
(Great Japanese pressing – much nicer than the original!)
