RicoJama Rico (180 gram pressing) ... LP
2 Tone/Chrysalis (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 23.98
An early 80s gem from Rico – one of a few records he did for the 2 Tone label, but in a voice that's every bit as strong as his work in the 70s! 2 Tone was mostly known for its crossover ska releases – albums by The Selecter or Specials – but the label let Rico keep on moving in that instrumental groove from his Jamaican roots – recording with top-shelf players who include Ansell Collins on organ and Chinna Smith on guitar – but also getting a bit of 2 Tone help from Dick Cuthell on flugelhorn and Jerry Dammers on piano and organ. The tunes all have a great laidback vibe – more in a rocksteady instrumental mode than an upbeat ska one – and Titles include "Do The Reload", "Easter Island", "Some Day", "Love and Justice", "Java", "Destroy Them", and "Distant Drums". LP, Vinyl record album
(40th Anniversary Edition pressing!)

RicoThat Man Is Forward (180 gram pressing) ... LP
2 Tone/Chrysalis (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 23.98
A classic album from Rico Rodriguez – one of the few cuts who can handle a trombone and make it seem like a totally badass instrument! Yet that's what Rico did, and did beautifully on a string of late 70s and early 80s albums that saw him rising up from early Kingston fame to a whole new scene over in London – which he hits very well here, thanks to some nice 2 Tone Record stylings on the production! Yet the core of the album is pre Jamaica – as Rico blows with rhythms from Sly & Robby, plus organ from Ansell Collins, guitar from Mikey Chung and Chinna Smith, and piano from Winston Wright – on instrumental smokers that include "Stay Out Late", "Red Top", "Ganja", "Easy Snappin", "Fiesta", "Chang Kai Shek", and "That Man Is Forward". LP, Vinyl record album
(40th Anniversary Edition pressing!)

✨✧ SpecialsMore Specials ... LP
Chrysalis, 1980. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
The second great set from The Specials – music once billed as "revival ska" – but which has arguably gone onto have a bigger impact than the first wave of the genre! There's a rough edged quality to the music that's totally great – a rude boy aesthetic filtered through the post-punk generation – perfect for the spare, earthy Two Tone production – and just right for a post-colonial London, looking for new ways to express itself! The studio work is as great as the core grooves from the band – lots of odd echoes and cool effects – kind of a Brit take on Kingston dub, served up beautifully to abstract the tunes. So many others ruined this approach in later years with weaker work – but here's a chance to hear it perfectly in an original conception! Titles include "International Jet Set", "Enjoy Yourself", "Stereotypes", "Holiday Fortnight", and "I Can't Stand It". (Rock, Reggae) LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cut corner, some ring and edge wear, and light stains on back.)
