Bob AndyLots Of Love & I (180 gram orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
High Note/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Bob Andy's come a long way here from his earlier work with Marcia Griffiths – taking on some new rasta energy, as you might guess from the title – and singing in an even headier style than before! The set was recorded at Treasure Isle, with bad-stepping rhythms from Sly & Robbie, and a nice current of dub on the production – all of which really sets the stage for Bob's richly soulful vocals on tunes that include "Troubled Woman", "Lots Of Love & I", "Unchain Me", "Stepping Free", "Revelation", "The Ghetto Stays IN My Mind", and "You Lied". Desmond Dekker & The Aces007 Shanty Town (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
The legendary debut LP from Desmond Dekker & The Aces – trailblazing recordings that are masterfully laid the groundwork for the international ska scene, popularizing the rude boy style and paving the way for coming reggae phenomenon that was still years down the road! Desmond Dekker's impeccable voice was always so strongly rooted on earlier soul, both Jamaican and global, and the tight rhythms under it laid down by the appropriately-named Aces is aces indeed. Includes the classic title track, "Rude Boy Train" and "Rudy Got Soul", "You've Got Your Troubles", "Keep A Cool Head", "Mother Long Tongue", "Personal Possession", "Unity" and more. Mikey DreadDread At The Controls (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A standout classic from Mikey Dread – a set recorded at the end of the 70s, when influences of reggae and dub were flowing out towards other genres and artists too – a moment that only saw studio giants like Mikey further refining their craft, to set their records apart from the rest! There's definitely some dubby currents here, but most of the focus is on the vocals and toasting of Dread – often delivered over nicely bubbling rhythms with help from Sly & Robbie, plus Augustus Pablo on electric piano, Chinna Smith on guitar, and Ansel Collins on organ. Titles include "King In the Ring", "Voice Of Jah", "Dread Combination", and "Everybody Needs A Proper Education". LP, Vinyl record album

HeptonesNight Food (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Island/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 25.98
Seminal sounds from The Heptones – and a record that really helped the older trio style of Jamaican music find a new home in the 70s roots reggae years! The vocals here are every bit as much in harmony heaven as reggae trios from a few years before – but there's also a tighter, more righteous quality to the music that really makes the record a classic – with stunning lead vocals from Leroy Sibbles, fused tightly with the voices of Earl Morgan and Barry Llewellyn, in this style that's smoothly soulful, but still has a nicely edgey undercurrent too. The record was cut at Harry J's, with production that really steps past earlier Heptones work – and titles include "Country Boy", "Book Of Rules", "Deceivers", "In The Groove", "Love Won't Come Easy", "Fatty Fatty", and "Mama Say". Roland AlphonsoABC Rocksteady (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Gay Feet/Doctor Bird (UK), 1968. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
A great showcase for the instrumental talents of Jamaican saxophonist Roland Alphonso – one of the key players who helped transform the sound of the scene in the 60s! But despite Roland's name on the front, the album's more of a group affair overall – directed by Boris Gardinier, and also featuring wicked rocksteady work from Lyn Taitt on guitar and Aubrey Adams on Hammond – both musicians who get almost as much time in the spotlight as Alphonso himself! Titles include a nice noisy take on the Booker T & The MGs tune "Hip Hug Her" – plus "Narata", "Pure Soul", "Wild & Free", "Little Nut Tree", "That's Life", "Sad Song", and "ABC Rocksteady". PLUS, this 2CD version has a huge number of related bonus tracks – 43 more titles, all produced by Sonia Pottinger, many of which are on CD for the first time – tracks by The Gaylads, Melodians, Ken Boothe, Patsy, Glen & Dave, The Tennors, Junior Soul, The Conquerors, Al & The Vibrators, Roland Downer & Count Ossie, The Soul Lads, Johnny & The Attractions, Dermott Lynch, and many others. Dennis BrownJust Dennis/Deep Down (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
A pair of albums from the great Dennis Brown – issued here along with 20 bonus tracks too! First up is Just Dennis – a hell of a debut from Dennis Brown – his first album as "just Dennis", and a soulful classic that really stands out from the pack! Just the first few notes of the record will remind you that Brown was easily one of the most impressive singers of his generation – a powerfully charismatic talent who brought a whole new level of soul to reggae, and one who could also write some great material as well! Niney The Observer produced the set to perfection – with a crisp crackle that really suits Dennis well – and titles include the hits "Westbound Train", "No More Will I Roam", "Cassandra", and "Conqueror" – plus "Run Too Tuff", "Africa", "Yagga, Yagga (You'll Suffer)", and "Show Us The Way". Next is Deep Down – a great little record – the follow-up to Dennis Brown's debut on Trojan, but a record that hardly ever saw much circulation back in the day! The production is handled by Niney The Observer, and has this righteous quality that really matches Dennis' message in his music – slow-stepping, head-nodding, and always with the kind of measured patience to see things through to the end – a complete delight when topped with Brown's fantastic vocals. Titles include "So Long", "Voice Of My Father", "Tribulation", "Shame", "Say Mama Say", "God Bless My Soul", and "Open The Gate". Bonus tracks include some collaborations with Big Youth, I Roy, Dillinger, and others – and titles include "Blood Son", "Wolf & Leopard (ext)", "Take A Trip To Zion", "Here I Come", "Flat Foot Hustling", "Jah Come Here", "My Time", "Six Dead & Nineteen Go To Jail", "Give A Helping Hand", "Why Must I", "Rock With Me", and "Africa (ext)". Errol Brown & The RevolutionariesDub Expression ... CD
High Note/Dub Store (Japan), 1978. Used ... $9.99
The mighty Errol Brown is at the controls in Treasure Isle – reworking some wicked rhythms played by The Revolutionaries – all with the stripped-down vibe of the best underground dub from Kingston in the 70s! Echo is heavy on the bottom-end of the sound – which makes the grooves ebb and flow in a way that's got a heck of a lot of sonic power – while some of the more isolated instruments over the top step along in a more melodic way – sometimes a bit of organ, guitar, or bubbling bass, depending on the track! The presentation is as stripped-down as the music – but at that mysterious level that only makes the record such a cool little treasure – with tracks that include "Bond Street Rock", "Ranking Marshal", "The Gun Court Dub", "Ital Stew", "Super Tracks", "Dread At The Controls", and "Ghetto Dub".
