Errol Brown & The RevolutionariesTip Top Dub ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A stunning double-length collection of work from dub producer Errol Brown – a massive 42 tracks in all, each of which definitely live up to the "tip top" promised in the title! The work here is from the years 1977 and 1978 – all originally issued on the High Note or Sky Note labels, at a time when Brown's talents in the studio were able to completely transform elements from contemporary tunes, and take them into all sorts of wonderful new directions with instrumentation help from The Revolutionaries! There's plenty of echo throughout, but most tunes also have a very straightforward vibe too – lean and forward-moving, without getting too bogged down in the production – just using the right elements to make everything sound super-cool throughout. The set features 25 tracks that have never been on CD amidst the total of 42 – and tracks include "Phase One Special", "Roots Man Dub", "Dancing Dub", "Wooga Man", "King Ruler", "Ital Dub", "Dub Walla", "Chapter 15", "Know Your Friend Version", "Strictly Roots"- "Lizard Version", and "Dub In Dreamland". RevolutionariesRoots Man Dub ... LP
GG's/Onlyroots (France), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 28.99
The Revolutionaries are in fantastic formation on this rare dub set for GG's Records – serving up all sorts of deep, dark rhythms that get wonderfully transformed by the heady production from Alvin Ranglin! Ranglin's a real master of understatement here – and the album's definitely got the lean, sinister vibe of some of the best indie sets from the Jamaican underground – work that hardly saw much circulation at the time, and the record has all sorts of wonderful instrumental touches throughout – including very cool trombone from Vin Gordon, organ from Ansel Collins, and guitar from Bo Peep. Titles include "Macaback Rock", "Ital Collie", "Heartical Dub", "Runaway Dub", "Iron Gate", "Rockers Mob", "Black Star Dub", and "Dub On The Track". LP, Vinyl record album

Al Brown & Inner ForceDub Cuts – Paolo Baldini Dub Files ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), Early 80s/2023. New Copy ... $22.99 29.99
Never-issued work from Jamaican singer Al Brown – tapes that were thought to be lost for years, then were recently rediscovered and brought back to life by the talents of Paolo "Dub Files" Baldini! The work has a righteous quality at the core – very soulful vocals from Al, resonating with a sense of message and power, while Inner Force provide gently-stepping rhythms which are then expanded and amplified in the dubs by Baldini! The music is never too forced, and everything flows together wonderfully – with a very vintage approach from the early days of the digital age, so that the whole thing really seems to come across like a dub version of the original album issued back in the day. Titles include "Dub Me Again", "Ghetto Situation", "Liquid Dub (part 1)", "Poor & Simple Version)", "Family Version", "Ghetto Love (part 1)", and "Dub Of Books". LP, Vinyl record album

Dennis Brown/Al CampbellExit/Hold Your Corner (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Jammy's/Doctor Bird (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
A pair of King Jammy sets, both making their CD debut – and presented here with bonus tracks too! First up is The Exit – a stunning set from Dennis Brown, and the kind of record that shows why he was one of the most soulful singers of the early digital scene! King Jammy put the set together, and uses all these bits borrowed from dub, but in a sparing way – so that Dennis is allowed to step out strong, in a very straightforward way – crafting these wonderful vocals next to sweet electro bits and warmer rhythms – on titles that include "The Exit", "Too Late", "Dance All Night", "Tracks Of Life", "We Should Make Love", and "Material Girl". Added to the set is another great Jammy's production, but one that was never released at the time – the album Hold Your Corner, with vocals from Al Campbell – a mighty great singer, and one with a sweetly crackling style! Titles on that record include "Hot Love", "Big Wheel", "Equalise It", "Stop You Fussing & Fighting", and "Buss Them Shut". The CD also features four more Jammy's productions – on cuts that include "She's Done With It" and "I Love You" by The Mighty Rudo, and "She Only Want Something" and "Crucial Lover" by Leroy Smart. Earl SixteenRightful Ruler ... LP
Zion High (UK), 2022. New Copy ... $19.99 33.99
A contemporary set, but one that's got a classic roots reggae vibe that goes right back to the 70s – right down to the classic style of featuring a dub version of a cut right after the vocals! Earl Sixteen has roots that go way back, and given the strength of his performance here, he can definitely claim the role of rightful ruler in the title – working with superb production from Zion I Kings, in a blend of older digital and dubby modes! Titles include "Jah Earth", "Jah Dub", "Rightful Ruler", "Rightful Dub", "Take Some Time", "Take Some Dub", "Find A Way", and "Find A Dub" – the last two of which feature guest work from Mr Williamz. Clint Eastwood & General SaintStop That Train ... LP
Greensleeves (UK), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 27.99
There's no stopping the double-dee jay power of Clint Eastwood and General Saint – as they pair together here on a classic album that's every bit as great as their Two Bad DJ set! The mix of voices trading back and forth is wonderful, especially over the laidback rhythms of the set – bridging some early digital modes with a warmth that comes from the way the pair interact – almost more down to earth than a solo dee jay might have, as the duo have a conversational vibe that gets past occasional hyperbole in the solo format. Also interesting is the way the pair can update older themes with a very contemporary vibe – in a set list that includes "Rock With Me", "Vote For We", "Nuclear Crisis", "Shame & Scandal", "Stop Jack", "True Vegetarian", "Everything Crash", "Monkey Man", and "Happy". Horace FergusonSensi Addict ... LP
Ujama/333 (UK), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 28.99
A sweet set from the digital generation, but one that shows that the best spirit of the roots reggae years were alive and well in the music of a singer like Horace Ferguson! Horace has this gently grooving style that's mighty nice – up in the higher range of the spectrum, which almost seems to bring a more human, youthful quality to his presentation of the message-oriented lyrics – all backed with production from Prince Jazzbo, who keeps things nice and lean in a mix of rhythms, basslines, and keyboards! Titles include "Tranquilizer", "Tickle Me", "Hunts Bay", "Slave", "Gazuma", "Great Stone", and "Sensi Addict". LP, Vinyl record album

Robert FfrenchWondering ... LP
Blue Mountain/333 (UK), 1985. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 26.99
A sweetly soulful set from Robert Ffrench – a completely self-produced set, which seems to give the whole thing a very down to earth vibe – especially given its release in the middle of the digital dancehall generation! There's certainly elements in the music that link it to that moment – especially the electric rhythms and keyboards – but there's a very personal approach to the record that recalls some of the more intimate modes of the lovers generation, and some of the more earnest, soulful expressions of the decade before! The whole thing's great – a rare gem that really deserves the attention its warranted in critical circles over the years – with titles that include "You Are So Special", "Heartbreaker", "I Can't Finance You", "Sweet Sixteen", "Give Me Your Love", and "I Am Wondering". Henry Junjo LawesJuno Presents – Evil Curse Of The Vampires (2CD pressing) ... CD
Greensleeves, 1981. New Copy 2CD ... $23.99 26.98
Scientist spins out on a dub-driven power boat – scanning the swamps to drive out the vampires and a host of other ghouls too – all while reinventing Jamaican music in the process! The record's filled with lots of cool electric elements – those weird production effects and electronic doodles that make the music of Scientist so revolutionary – especially when spun out over a still-familiar backdrop supplied by Roots Radics, with a core essence that's very much from the pre-digital world of Jamaican music. Rhythm tracks were done at Channel One, and Scientist mixed the set at King Tubbys – a host of dub mini-masterpieces that include "The Voodoo Curse", "Dance Of The Vampires", "Blood On His Lips", "Cry Of The Werewolf", "the Mummy's Shroud", "The Corpse Rises", "Night Of The Living Dead", "Your Teeth In My Neck", "Plague Of Zombies", and "Ghost Of Frankenstein". 2CD version features a full bonus record of vocal versions – by Wailing Souls, Wayne Jarrett, Johnny Osbourne, and Michael Prophet! Hugh MaddoPop Style ... LP
Jamaazima/333 (UK), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 28.99
There's nothing pop about this record – as the set's an obscure 80s digital date, recorded at Aquarius Studios, issued on a tiny American label, and a great reminder that there were still plenty of homegrown sounds during these years of big reggae success – as long as you knew where to look! Hugh Maddo takes things nice and easy, as do the rhythms – so that there's no too-full dancehall rhythms for the dancefloor, and instead this vibe that recalls much more of the 70s spirit of Kingston, especially work from the smaller labels. Titles include "Give Me The Sensie", "Everywhere You Go In This World", "Take Bribe", "Budget", "Baby Don't Go", "Country Girl", "Pop Style", and "Jah Jah". LP, Vinyl record album

Sugar Minott/Johnny OsbourneBitter Sweet/Reggae On Broadway ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
A pair of great records from the production hands of Prince Jammy – back to back on a single CD! First up is Bitter Sweet – one of those key records that helped Sugar Minott earn the sweet reputation that really echoed his name – as the set's got these easygoing grooves that are perfect for his warmly crackling vocals – richly expressive, but without every sounding overdone – all set up in these great instrumental elements produced and arranged by Prince Jammy! The groove is different than some of the sharper modes that were creeping in during the digital generation – very casual, with a quality that has the easygoing vocals from Minott stepping out nicely on cuts that include "I'm Not For Sale", "Give The People", "Never Too Young", "Be Careful", "Right Track", "Can't Get Over", "Save The Children", and "This World". Reggae On Broadway is a gem from Johnny Osbourne – hardly the kind of album with polish and glam that you'd expect from a Broadway title, and instead this mellow, laidback session that really showcases the genius of Prince Jammy in the studio! Given the date of the recording, things could be a lot more commercial, or a lot cleaner in a digital way – but Jammy keeps the proceedings casual and cool, which lets those magnificent vocals of Osbourne flow out in a really great way. Titles include "Let Me Your Chopper", "Live Right", "Folly Ranking", "Water Pumping", "Reggae On Broadway", "Mr Walker", "Sing Along", and "Can't Leave Jah". Great Doctor Bird package – excellent sound, and very detailed notes! CD

Lee Perry & The UpsettersEastwood Rides Again ... LP
Trojan (UK), 1970. Near Mint- ... $24.99
If there's anyone who could make the idea of Italian westerns and Jamaican grooves come together, it's the young Lee Scratch Perry – the mad musician who always had a great talent for mixing it up! Eastwood Rides Again follows the theme of The Upsetters previous classic, Return Of Django – and like that one, the groove isn't just the rocksteady rhythms you'd expect – but also maybe this more spacious version of the style, with a bit more space between the notes than some of their Kingston contemporaries – almost a mode that could be inspired by the spacious soundtrack scoring of the Italian scene, then delivered with a much grittier vibe. Most tunes are instrumentals, and titles include "Eastwood Rides Again", "Salt & Pepper", "Red Hot", "Tight Spot", "Catch This", "Popcorn", and "You Are Adorable". LP, Vinyl record album

Takaya SuzukiReggae Definitive 1958 to 2018 ... Book
Ele-King (Japan), 2022. New Copy book ... $24.99 32.99
A really great book if you're digging for reggae records – one that features hundreds of listings of albums, both classic and hard to find – each with a small color image of the cover, dates and labels in English, and a small review in Japanese! You've probably seen this format for other Japanese disc guides on jazz, funk, or soul – and this volume brings that same approach to reggae records, tracing the music from the start of the 60s onwards – in chapters on The Ska Era, Rocksteady Era, Early Reggae, Roots Rock, Early Dancehall, Digital Dancehall, Neo Roots, Modern & Hybrid Era, and Reggae Revival. The book is softcover, over 300 pages, and has full color images throughout – and even if you can't read the Japanese text, you can likely use Google on your phone to make a translation. ✨✧ Peter ToshEqual Rights ... LP
Columbia, 1977. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
Peter Tosh's great, militant, second solo LP, one of the best of his career! Equal Rights is up to par with the finest Wailers LPs, although this is a bit heavier than the groovy, mellow Legalize It, the predecessor. A vital, hugely important, essential set of mid-to-late 70s reggae on Columbia. Lots of classics – including "Stepping Razor" and "Get Up, Stand Up", plus "I Am That I Am", "Downpressor Man", "Jah Guide", "Equal Rights", and "African". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Cover has a split and frayed spine and top left corner, a 1 inch tear in the opening, and is bent at the edges and right side.)

Delroy WilsonBest Of Delroy Wilson – Hit After Hit ... LP
Empire/Lantern (Italy), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 34.99
There's a nicely punctuated vibe to this sweet set of later tracks from Delroy Wilson – instrumentation that's moved into the digital age, but which still has that slow funky crackle at the bottom that seems to work so well with Delroy's vocals! The approach seems to work especially well at the midtempo range that graces most of these cuts – gentle grooves that work really well, both with the covers that Wilson takes on for the record, and the original songs that are especially nice! Titles include "Love To See You Smile", "What's Going On", "Play Something Pretty", "Sharing The Night Together", "There's No Getting Over Me", and "Honey". LP, Vinyl record album
