Philip GlassSatyagraha (3LP Box Set) ... LP
Columbia, 1985. Near Mint- 3LP Box Set ... $33.99 39.99
Amazing work from Philip Glass – his second great opera, and a long-overdue follow-up to Einstein On The Beach – a set of music that's every bit as great as that groundbreaking work, but maybe even with stronger, fuller execution overall! The piece looks at the early political years of Gandhi – the title is a term coined by him, as a reference to his philosophy of truth and love – with words by Constance DeJohng, and these amazing minimalist orchestrations by Glass – filled with the kind of long-spun lines you'd find in his instrumental work, but somehow made even more amazing with the presence of lyrics! Douglas Perry handles the role of Gandhi – and the performance is by the New York City Opera Orchestra and Chorus, directed by Christopher Keene. LP, Vinyl record album
(Dutch pressing. Includes the booklet, lined inner sleeves, and Masterworks catalog. Box has a cutout hole, in great shape otherwise.)

Sven Ake Johansson & Alexander Von SchlippenbachUber Ursache Und Wirkung Der Meinungsverschiedenheiten Beim Turmbau Zu Babel (2LP box set with bonus DVD) ... LP
Trost (Austria), 1994. New Copy 2LP ... $96.99 99.99
A wonderfully ambitious project from these two legendary improvising musicians – a larger project for stage that was created by both pianist Alexander Von Schlippenbach and drummer Sven Ake Johansson – the latter of whom here is very much into his later life role as a composer! The set features a mix of voice, vocals, and music – some spoken parts by Johansson, sung passages by the great Shelly Hirsch – and work from a very hip group that includes Wolfgang Fuchs and Dietmar Diesner on saxes, Paul Lovens on drums, Tristan Honsinger on cello, Anne Le Baron on harp, and Schlippenbach on piano. There's a mixture of free jazz, structure, and voice that almost feels as if Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill had the chance to record an album for FMP – and this beautiful set presents the first-ever release of the important 1994 performance of the material. (Jazz, Out Sound) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousComplete Obscure Records Collection (10CD set) ... CD
Obscure/Dialogo (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy 10CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive tribute to this groundbreaking, genre-busting label – a short-lived imprint on Island Records that was put together by Brian Eno in the mid 70s – all to showcase some of the best new experiments in avant classical and minimalist music! There's a special sort of quality to these records – work that maybe has a bit more "heart" than some of the colder, more academic work of the period – even in comparison to some of the other records issued by some of these artists – warmer and more personal than the productions of Cramps or CRI, for example – and always seeming to have that special sort of sonic brilliance that Eno brought to his own music of the time! The label only issued ten full records, but that makes for a very unified vibe for the entire catalog – which is collected here with a huge booklet of notes inside the box set. Albums include The Sinking Of The Titanic by Gavin Bryars, Voices & Instrumentals by Jan Steele & John Cage, Irma by Tom Phillips, Pavilion Of Dreams by Harold Budd, Decay Music by Michael Nyman, Discreet Music by Brian Eno, New & Rediscovered Musical Instruments by Max Eastley & David Toop, Music From The Penguin Cafe by Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Machine Music by John White & Gavin Bryars, and Ensemble Pieces by Christopher Hobbs, John Adams, & Gavin Bryars. ✨✧ Philip Glass/Robert WilsonEinstein On The Beach (4LP Box Set) ... LP
CBS, 1979. Near Mint- 4LP Box Set ... Out Of Stock
An amazing record, and one that forever transformed the sound of opera in the US – the amazing summation of all the many musical ideas that Philip Glass had been cooking up since the 60s, done as a mindblowing stage presentation with Robert Wilson! Voices, organ, reeds, and piano come together in wonderful lines that go on and on, seemingly forever, in endless variations and rivulets of sound – as simple in structure as the leaner small combo minimalist work from Glass – but with a very different style in the fuller setting, with a sonic quality that still is as groundbreaking today as it was back in the 70s! ✨✧ Cornelius CardewMaterial ... CD
Hat Now (Switzerland), 2001. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The compositions of Cornelius Cardew, performed here with a distinctly Chicago inflection – in a relatively recent performance that is partially conducted by Art Lange, and featuring Jim Baker on Arp, Carrio Biolo on vibes, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, and Jeff Parker on guitar. Given the relation of some of the players to Lonberg-Holm's Lightbox Orchestra, there's definitely a similar feel here – a sense of timing and interplay that illuminates Cardew's compositions nicely, in the hands of musicians who can understand the complexities of his work, and make the best of the freedoms he allows them. Titles include "Autumn 60", "Treatise", "Memories Of You", "Material", and "Octet 61 For Jasper Johns". CD
(Out of print.)
