Robert AshleyPrivate Parts ... LP
Lovely, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
One of the most important records from composer Robert Ashley – and one that's got a compact approach that helped it circulate a lot more than some of Ashley's larger operas! This piece is very much like those – with Ashley's unique spoken approach – part poetry, part performance art – but the sound is more stripped-down, and in the spirit of the young downtown New York generation of Laurie Anderson and Phillip Glass – served up with great instrumental help from contemporary Blue Gene Tyranny, who plays piano, moog, and clavinet – with some additional tablas for accompaniment! The whole thing was recorded at the important Center For Contemporary Music on the west coast, at Mills College – and is almost a Bay Area answer to some of the more compelling art records from the New York scene. The record is divided into 2 parts – "The Park" and "The Backyard" – both filled with a hypnotic mix of voice, keyboards, and tablas! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Brian EnoDiscreet Music (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Obscure/Astralwerks, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! (Rock, Out Sound) LP, Vinyl record album

Gruppo D'Improvvisazione Nuova ConsonanzaGruppo D'Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza (1965) ... LP
Cinevox (Italy), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
One of the most obscure chapters in the career of Ennio Morricone – important avant garde work recorded in the mid 60s, just at a point when he was beginning to rise in soundtrack fame! The ensemble is a key Italian modernist group featuring Morricone, Giovanni Piazza, Mario Bertoncini, Egisto Macchi, Gualtiero Branch, Jesus Villa Rojo, and Francesco Evangelisti – mostly classically-trained musicians, but working here in a set of improvisations that are extremely spare, and which are very much at the lower end of the sound spectrum. Many of the sounds on the set are right at the frontiers of hearing – and others, while more present, disappear as quickly as they emerge – further enforcing the mystery and mood of the record. And while the overall style is quite different than Morricone's soundtrack work, the group was clearly a key testing ground for his ideas of sound and space that emerged later. Titles include "Soup", "Scratch", "Settimino", and "Eflot". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MoondogMoondog On The Streets Of New York (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Mars/Lucia, 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A stunning set of early work from the legendary Moondog – recorded on the streets of New York, but with a complexity and sophistication that may well beat his famous early albums on Prestige! The sounds here are amazing – the work of a composer who's stripped everything down to the core, and who finds these organic ways for percussion to interact with woodwinds and strings – all at a level that has a surprising richness in its simplicity – a mode that not only made Moondog an important outsider artist of his generation, but also a huge influence on minimalism, modern jazz, and even the worlds of exotica and other instrumental styles! This 12" LP expands the original 45rpm single with a lot more material from the collection of recordist Tony Schwartz – and titles include "Fog On The Hudson", "Moondog Nocturne Suite", "Why Spend The Dark Night With You", "On & Off The Beat", "From One To Nine", "Untitled Percussion Solo 1", "Untitled Percussion Solo In Traffic 2", "Untitled Chant 4", "Utsu", "Lullaby", and "Avenue Of The Americas". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes a very cool booklet of notes!)
