Jon Appleton & Don CherryHuman Music (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Water, 1969. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
A fantastic record – and a really mindblowing mix of spiritual jazz and electronics! The set is an amazing collaboration between trumpeter Don Cherry and pioneering electronic musician Jon Appleton – one of those rare meetings of the minds that goes far deeper than you'd expect! On the set, Cherry's trumpet, flute, and percussion is heavily processed by Appleton – often in ways that are organic enough to keep with Cherry's other experiments of the time, and with the "Human Music" title of the set – but sometimes with the more playful feel of Appleton's other music from the time. The mix of electronics and improvisation is amazing – years ahead of its time, and with a haunting sound that works perfectly against Cherry's style of restrained spiritualism. The LP's got 4 long tracks – "Boa", "Oba", "Abo", and "Bao" – all recorded live in the studio! CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Don" and "Jon". CD

Don Cherry/Krzystof PendereckiActions (limited colored vinyl) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Philips/Our Swimmer (Germany), 1971. New Copy ... On August 29, 2020
One of the most successful jazz-meets-modern classical albums we've ever heard – thanks largely to the supreme talents of Don Cherry! Cherry leads the large New Eternal Rhythm Orchestra – which includes Peter Brotzmann, Tomasz Stanko, Manfred Schoof, Kenny Wheeler, Gunter Hampel, Willem Breuker, and Albert Manglesdorf – and Krzystof Penderecki conducts the entire proceedings. Cherry plays mostly solo on his own composition "Humus", and other tracks include "Sita Rama Encores" (also by Cherry), and Penderecki's "Actions For Free Jazz Orchestra". (Note: Record Store Day 2020 has been rescheduled to separate special release days of August 29, September 26 and October 24. The specific release date for each previously announced title is yet to be announced and subject to change. Titles are in limited supply – and will be offered for sale first to customers who visit the Dusty Groove retail outlet in Chicago on August 29, September 26 and October 24 only if it is safe and responsible to open the store, with Covid-19 shelter in place orders no longer in place. Items will not be pre-sold or reserved in any way. However, we will offer up whatever we have left for sale online after 12pm Central on release day.) (Jazz, Out Sound) LP, Vinyl record album

VariousMiniatures 1 & 2 – A Sequence Of Tiny Masterpieces ... CD
Pipe/Cherry Red (UK), 1980. New Copy 2CDs ... $12.99
A great 2CD set – one that brings together two rare installments of this Miniatures series of music, collage, and sound art! First up is the 1979 edition – a really fantastic little record – and one that has a concept that's unlike anything else we can think of! Morgan Fisher presents 51 different "miniatures" – songs that are a minute or less, all stacked up to make a record that's somewhere between the DIY post-punk spirit of the Rough Trade years, and some of the more offbeat, avant work of the electronic/musique concrete generation! The mix of artists is fantastic, and the brevity of the songs means that if there's something you don't like, you'll quickly be in the company of the next song – and Fisher should not only be hailed for the way that he put the whole thing together, but also for the amazing selection of artists – a lineup that includes Kevin Coyne, David Bedford, Fred Frith, Robert Wyatt, John Otway, Quentin Crisp, Michael Nyman, Pete Seeger, David Cunningham, Ron Geesin, Robert Fripp, George Melly, Steve Miller, Lol Coxhill, Neil Innes, Maggie Nicols, Andy Partridge, Stinky Winkles, and many others! CD2 features the installment from the year 2000 – with 61 more pieces, done in a similar spirit, but with a shift in technology – in a lineup that includes contributions from Gavin Bryars, Jan Campion, Robert Fripp, Dissidenten, David Cunningham, Chris Butler, John Paul Jones, Ottmar Liebert, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Trans Global Underground, Jane Siberry, Terry Riley, Hermeto Pascoal, Linton Kwesi Johnson, and many others!
