Jon AppletonMusic For Synclavier & Other Digital Systems ... CD
Folkways, 1978. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.99
Moody electronics from maestro Jon Appleton – a spare set that's quite a bit different from some of his early 70s tape experiments for Flying Dutchman! This Folkways album has Appleton doing some wonderfully weird work on the keys – mostly a synclavier, but also some other early digital systems too – but used in these really textural ways that still sound a lot like early analogue electronics! The tunes have an almost poetic feel – usually building slowly, with an Eno-like approach to sound – and titles include "Mussems Sang", "Zoetrope", "Syntrophia", and "In Deserto". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Jon AppletonWorld Music Theater Of Jon Appleton ... CD
Folkways, 1974. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
Mindblowing music from the mighty Jon Appleton – a cool combination of tape effects, electronics, and studio wizardry – every bit as wonderful as his Syntonic Menagerie album for Flying Dutchman! The sound here is quite similar – a playful pastiche of odd sounds, tones, and other elements – fitted together with a lot more imagination than some of Jon's contemporaries – never too stuffy or academic, and almost with a sensibility that predicts remix work in the decade to come. Two tracks on the set – "Chef D'Oeuvre" and "Times Square Times Ten" – were on the Flying Dutchman album, but all the others appear to be unique – and titles include "Hommage To Orpheus", "Ofa Atu Tonga", "Nevsehir", "Apolliana", "Sones De San Blas", and "CCCP". Beaver & KrauseNonesuch Guide To Electronic Music ... LP
Nonesuch, 1968. Near Mint- 2LPs + Book ... $24.99
One of the most electronic albums that Beaver & Krause ever recorded – a set that was issued as a Guide To Electronic Music, but which has a way more to offer than just a simple demonstration record! Unlike most other B&K albums, which can feature a bit of rock mixing in with the moog, this one is almost entirely analogue electronics – often played in a stark, spare way that has plenty of spooky tones – but also works beautifully together in a mode that's similar to other experimental electronic sets from the time, such as Morton Subotnick's contemporaneous records for Nonesuch. The tracks are very short, with concentrated bursts of sound, and have titles like "White Sound", "Ribbon Controller", and "Sawtooth". Comes in a box with a very cool book that explains a lot of different properties of electronic music. Great for sample-heads or for junior knob twiddlers. 2 LPs strong! Folkways, 1959. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 22.98
One of the strangest albums ever from John Cage – but one of the most compelling too – and a record that really gets at the larger person behind his incredible music! The album has a very spare format – and features John Cage reading 90 stories – all short, spoken bits that are woven with Cage's theories on art, music, chance, and existence – backed by music from David Tudor, who plays piano passages from Cage's "Concert For Piano & Orchestra" and tape sections from the classic "Fontana Mix". Cage's voice alone is worth the price of admission – especially on some of the more autobiographical sections! CD

Dariush Dolat-ShahiElectronic Music, Tar, & Sehtar ... CD
Folkways, 1985. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
Mindblowing sounds at a level we've never heard before – a really unique combination of electronics and Persian music, done in a way that's quite different from any other recording of its nature! The electronics are used in a way that's relatively spare, but which definitely sets a sonic texture next to the acoustic sounds from sehtar and tar – not this moogy way of interfering with them, but more in terms of waves of sound that augment their qualities and deepen the overall feel of the music in really special ways. This is hardly any sort of gimmicky "world meets moog" record – and instead has an ethereal feel that's all its own – and this pulse that comes from the really modal use of all elements! Titles include "Zahab", "Razm", "Shabistan", and "Sama". CD

Brian EnoDiscreet Music (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Obscure/Astralwerks, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! (Rock, Out Sound) LP, Vinyl record album

Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleEntourage ... CD
Folkways, 1973. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
Beautiful sounds from the Entourage ensemble – a record that's got a really meditative blend of acoustic elements with a few electric touches – used in ways that start in jazz, then move way beyond! Instrumentation includes guitar, flute, keyboards, violin, and mbira – coming together with really unusual inflections that are partly borrowed from Eastern sources – like Noh theater, or Balinese music – but which unfurl with a more freewheeling, American underground vibe as well! No sounds are ever too sharp, and there's almost a hint of the instrumental experiments in the 80s underground – such as work by Penguin Cafe Orchestra or Soft Verdict – but with an earthier feel overall. Titles include "Jattle Boxes", "Giraffes", "Solo For Electric Viola", "Michael's Song", "Silver Drum", and "Percussion Dance". CD

Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleNeptune Collection ... CD
Folkways, 1976. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
Warmly experimental music from the 70s Folkways scene – music that's a mixture of jazz, folk, electronics, and improvised styles – played with an open, honest sort of feel! The Entourage Music & Theater Ensemble features four composer/musicians – Joe Clark, Wall Matthews, Rusti Clark, and Michael Smith – all individuals with a nicely subdued sensibility, despite the "theater" in the group's name. The work here is hardly performative – at least not in an aggressive sense – and instead is a beautiful matrix of sounds from instruments that include keyboards, acoustic guitar, soprano sax, viola, gong, and percussion – all used lightly, with an approach that's almost a folksier take on early 70s spiritual jazz – especially given the way the acoustic guitar is used. Titles include "Nature Spirits", "Incantation For The Death Of Self", "Space Needle Suicide", "Tar Box Poltergeist", and "Druid Dance". CD

Westminster, 1961. Very Good ... $6.99
Remi Gassman and Oskar Sala each present pieces of modern electronic music in this hard to find LP for Westminster, very much in the style that was in vogue in New York in the 50s and early 60s. Gassman performs his "Electronic Music For the Ballet Electronics", which has a spare spooky sound, and Sala gives us "Five Improvisations On Magnetic Tape" – which are a bunch of short electronic tracks with a fragile, yet noisy feel to them. As the back of the record says "If anyone cares, this record has a dynamic range of 51 dB. Its lowest frequency is 15.4 cycles per second, its highest fundamental 3951 cps, the highest harmonis or overtone 15806 cps. It can blow out speakers, traumatize cats and arouse the landlord." Joe Meek/Pierre Boulez/Luc FerrariI Hear A New World – The Pioneers Of Electronic Music (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A really cool little package – one that brings space age sounds from both the world of mainstream pop, and the farther reaches of electronic music composition in the postwar years! The core of CD1 is the groundbreaking album I Hear A New World by Joe Meek – presented here both in the "restored" version that was first issued by RPM in 1991, and the original unreleased tapes from 1960. The whole record is like The Ventures meeting space aliens – and Joe Meek composed and conceived the incredible 60s session of strange space-age instrumentals – one that mixes instrumental surf-flavored guitars with crazy sound effects and production techniques, for an out-of-this-world batch of tracks that's like nothing else we can think of! Tracks include "Glob Waterfall", "I Hear A New World", "Orbit Around The Moon", "March Of The Dribcots", and "Valley Of The Saroos". CD1 also features 11 more weird electronic tracks from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop – and from Ray Cathode. Then CD2 and CD3 move into the darker corners of experimental electronics and musique concrete – with works that include "Dripsody" by Hugh Le Caine, "Syncopation" by Tom Dissevelt, "Timbres Durees" by Olivier Messiaen, "Poeme Electronique" by Edgard Varese, "The Innocents" by Daphne Oram, "Fontana Mix" by John Cage, "Visage V (parts 1, 2, & 3)" by Luc Ferrari, "Musica Su Due Dimensioni" by Bruno Maderna, "Deux Etudes De Musique Concrete For Magnetic Tape" by Pierre Boulez, "Fantasy In Space" by Otto Luening, and "Piece For Tape Recorder" by Vladimir Ussachevsky. Vaclav NelhybelOuter Space Music ... CD
Folkways, 1959. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A fantastic little record, and one that definitely lives up to its promise – as Vaclav Nelhybel uses piano and electronics with a lot of echo and effects – all to create the sort of music you'd imagine if you were careening through space at the end of the 50s! The songs are relatively spare, but in a great way – a style that lets you focus on key elements in the music, as Nelhybel spins out short songs that often have a core cosmic melody, but with a very offbeat vibe – almost as if Vaclav is trying to claim a role here as the Moondog of outer space! Titles include "Space Meteors", "Sun Lava", "Dark Cosmic Clouds", "Cosmic Dawn", "Space Spirals", "Vibrations From Outer Space", "Cosmic Cycle", "Nebulae", and "Mars Craters". CD

✨✧ Steve ReichDrumming/Music For Mallet Instruments, Voices, & Organ/Six Pianos ... CD
Deutsche Grammophon (Germany), 1973. Used 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
Landmark music from Steve Reich – a set that takes his previous experiments in minimalism and phase shifting, and moves them into a highly percussive mode! The rhythms here become melodies – the sorts that you'd hear on other Reich keyboard albums, but played live with incredible dexterity – as each player puts together their passage in ways that interlocks with the other – than slowly moves in space over time – and letting in marimba, voice, piccolo, and glockenspiel to the mix as well. The shift over time is amazing – something that so many others have copied over the years, but never done this well again – and the set not only features the extended "Drumming", in four parts – but also includes "Six Pianos", for six acoustic keyboards – plus "Music For Mallet Instruments, Voices, & Organ" – which is every bit as haunting as you'd guess! Folkways, 1970. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
A great entry in the "intro to electronic music" style that was popular at the end of the 60s – and like others in the genre, a set that seems to use each new track to demonstrate certain aspects of electronic music! Techniques include tape echoes, moogy passages, and even stereo separation effects – and lots of wonderful analogue electronics from JD Robb! The date of the work is 1970, but the approach is a bit older – almost abstract, and very concerned with sonic textures and space – but also playfully assembled, at a level that's fairly tuneful for most of the set – even though there's not really that many "songs" to speak of. Titles include "Collage No 2", "Spatial Serenade (excerpt)", "Green Mansions", "Analogies", "Les Ondes Martenot", and "Transmutations For Orchestra". CD

Columbia, 1962. Very Good ... $4.99
Three very different slices of the genius of Edgar Varese – presented here on a set of classic Columbia recordings from the early 60s! "Arcana" is perhaps the most ambitious work here – structured for an orchestra of 120 musicians, 70 of whom are string players – although the core energy of the piece seems to come from the 8 percussionists who handle a wide variety of instruments – creating those stark sounds that mark some of Varese's most important compositions – which the strings, brass, and woodwinds cluster around in equally powerful ways! "Deserts" is a piece that's more subtle, and much longer – mixing a variety of electronic sounds and instrumental moments, with shifting sonic spaces and volumes throughout – all to make up a side-long recording filled with moody moments and more powerful electronic bursts. "Offrandes" is a selection of two songs – in a haunting blend of woodwind instruments, percussion, and trumpet – plus vocals from soprano Dona Precht. LP, Vinyl record album

A wonderful collection of early electronic music – issued by the less-high tech Folkways label, but every bit as compelling as similar collections from bigger labels at the time! Most of the work was composed in the 50s and early 60s, and is from the Electronic Music Studio at the University of Toronto – one of the key academic outposts for the style in its pre-commercial years. Composers include Myron Schaffer, Arnold Walter, Harvey Olnick, and Hugh Le Caine – all working in weird tones and sounds that remind us a lot of the best early work of Pierre Henry. There's some great tracks, including "The Orgasmic Opus", "Dripsody", "Inferno", "Noesis", "Summer Idyll", "Collage", and "Pinball" – which features only sounds from pinball machines! CD

A double-length set of experimental electronics from Folkways – music recorded a bit later than some of the early analogue sides on the label, but done with a similarly spare and spooky feel! There's a nice maturation going on here – a move away from some of the more academic electronics of the immediat postwar years, into that more art-oriented space the music hit at the end of the 70s – a somewhat freer, more open, and almost more playful mode at times – although not in the manner of late 60s crossover pop electronic records. Most tracks are pretty long, and often introduced by the composers – and titles include "Heavy Music For Four Crowbars" and "The Sorcerer Revisited" by Barton McLean, "Nova" by Reed Holmes, "Through To The End Of The Tunnel" by Kevin Hanlon, and "Invisible Chariots" by Priscilla McLean. You'll recognize some of these artists from later, straighter work – or from earlier, more progressive sides – and together with the rest, the package presents a beautifully bleak British musical landscape – sounds that maybe provide the breeding ground for the later industrial scene, but without any of its cliches – or which maybe help the earlier art rock generation to find a bit more edge and relevance in the punk generation! As always with Cherry Red, the notes and package are as great as the music – and the set features dozens of tracks by artists who include Robert Wyatt, Test Dept, Robert Rental, Alterations, Art Bears, A Tent, Gavin Bryars, Hula, Nocturnal Emissions, Robert Fripp, Faction, Zos Kia, Eyeless In Gaza, David Cunningham, Clock DVA, Will Sergeant, Swell Maps, Soft Machine, Pop Group, This Heat, Blancmange, Throbbing Gristle, and many more! VariousHighlights Of Vortex – Electronic Experiments & Music ... CD
Folkways, 1959. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
A very cool set of music – originally recorded as part of a mixed sound/image experiment shown at the San Francisco Planetarium in the late 50s! There's definitely a lot of early analogue electronics going on here – but the presentation is also sometimes a bit more playful, and almost earthy, too – a great change from some of the more avant or academic records of this nature – and an illustration that even early on, there were poetically creative folks who found a lot of ways to work with a personal approach to the new medium! Titles include "Notes On The History Of A World Part 3" by Gordon Longfellow, "Rhythm Study No 8" by Henry Jacobs, "Trilogy" by David Talcott, "Electronic Kabuki Mambo" by Henry Jacobs, "For The Big Horn" by William Loughborough, and "Loop No 3" by David Talcott. CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Terry RileyIn C (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Columbia/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.98
Terry Riley's masterpiece, and an enduring classic that never grows old – and which never lapses into the hippy dippyness of some of his other work! The piece features 53 short musical passages, played in an order defined by the players, in minimal repetition, moving in and out of phase synchronicity – ever shifting, turning, and drifting – all to create a remarkable tapestry of sound, texture, and melody. This recording of the work is still the best, and it was produced with excellent care by David Behrman, as part of Columbia's great "music of our time" series. Wonderful throughout – and always a treat! LP, Vinyl record album

Jon AppletonAppleton Syntonic Menagerie ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1969. Used ... $11.99
An incredible record from the glory days of Flying Dutchman! The session's one of a rare few cut by electronic musician Jon Appleton, and it's a stunning blend of analogue electronics and sonic cut up material – a record of musique concrete compositions to rival the greatest work coming out of France in the late 50s and early 60s! Appleton's approach to the material is at some level like that of Pierre Henry, but at another level, he's also using some bits of late 60s Americana – such as a Chef Boyardee commercial, or snippets of interviews done in an airport – and it's elements like these that give the set a darkness that makes it even more compelling. Titles include "Chef D'Oeuvre", "Newark Airport Rock", "Times Square Times Ten", "Second Scene Unobserved", "Nyckelharpan", and "The Visitation". CD

Satoshi AshikawaStill Way (Wave Notation 2) ... LP
WRWTFWW (Switzerland), 1982. New Copy ... $26.99
A beautiful example of the really special sort of instrumental record that was coming out of Japan in the early 80s – music that's spare and minimal, but quite different than any sort of similar projects from other parts of the globe! Satoshi Ashikawa creates sounds in ways that resonate both with the ancient and contemporary, organic and urban, at a level that's very slow-building and striking in its careful use of sound and space – served up here on instrumentation that includes vibes from Midori Takada, piano from Tomoko Sono, and harp from Yuko Utsumi – always tuneful, but in ways that are more like a natural progression of sound than conventional music. Titles include "Prelude", "Still Park", "Still Sky", "Wrinkle", and "Image Under The Tree". (Rock, Out Sound) LP, Vinyl record album

Robert AshleyPrivate Parts ... LP
Lovely, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
One of the most important records from composer Robert Ashley – and one that's got a compact approach that helped it circulate a lot more than some of Ashley's larger operas! This piece is very much like those – with Ashley's unique spoken approach – part poetry, part performance art – but the sound is more stripped-down, and in the spirit of the young downtown New York generation of Laurie Anderson and Phillip Glass – served up with great instrumental help from contemporary Blue Gene Tyranny, who plays piano, moog, and clavinet – with some additional tablas for accompaniment! The whole thing was recorded at the important Center For Contemporary Music on the west coast, at Mills College – and is almost a Bay Area answer to some of the more compelling art records from the New York scene. The record is divided into 2 parts – "The Park" and "The Backyard" – both filled with a hypnotic mix of voice, keyboards, and tablas! LP, Vinyl record album

David BedfordNurses Song With Elephants ... LP
Dandelion, 1972. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Jarringly odd and oddly quiet movements alike from David Bedford – his tripped out album for John Peel's Dandelion label in the early 70s! It's experimental stuff, but it's proundly musical in the endeavor – nothing's noisy or abstractly minimal purely for the sake of it. Includes pieces designed for records, 10 guitars, girls voices, wind & strings. Includes "It's Easier Than It Looks", "Nurses Song With Elephants", "Some Bright Stars For Queens College". "Trona" and "Sad And Lonely Faces". (Rock, Out Sound) LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Cover has some light wear and a cutout mark.)

Lars Gunnar BodinFor Jon – Fragments Of A Time To Come 1977 ... CD
Folkways, 1977. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A fantastic blend of electronics and voices from Swedish composer Lars Gunnar Bodin – and a record that's right up there with our favorite experiments of the type from the better-known Luciano Berio! Bodin keeps things spare and spooky at most moments – and uses themes from science fiction narratives that really fit the music – which often has these bold analogue elements that feel like the kind of noise you might be able to hear in space – wrapped around vocal moments that are often processed, so that they have a similarly electric vibe! Titles include "Soon She Would", "Something", "Soprano Solo 2", "Manual For Interdimensional Travel", and "The Room Was Described". CD

Glen BrancaLesson No 1 (2 x 12" pressing) ... LP
99 Records/Superior Viaduct, Early 80s. Near Mint- 2LP ... $19.99
Seminal sounds from the New York scene at the start of the 80s – and one of the first important records to feature the music of Glenn Branca! This EP was an important part of the 99 Records catalog – and like that label's work by artists like ESG or Liquid Liquid, it's got a style that's completely hard to define – a genre-blending mix of influences and elements, presented with a sensibility that's at once arty, and down to earth! Branca works here in a smaller setting than on later recordings – playing guitar in a quintet that also features Anthony Coleman on keyboards – and working at a level that brings the best ideas of the minimalist compositional generation into play with smaller combo rockish instrumentation. "Lesson 1" is a track that's held us rapt for years – and it's backed by the equally great "Dissonance". This special reissue also features a bonus one-sided 12" single – with an early performance of "Bad Smells" – one of Branca's first multi-guitar compositions, performed by a group that includes Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, and Ned Sublette! Joseph ByrdYankee Transcendoodle – Electronic Fantasies For Patriotic Synthesizer ... LP
Takoma, 1976. Very Good+ ... $9.99
As the notes say, "this album is a series of aural and spatial fantasies evoking the spirit of American patriotic music" – and the whole thing's recorded on electronic keyboards. Given that this one's on Takoma, you can guess the kind of hippy-dippy folksist influence it might have, which gives the electronic music tracks an even weirder edge. Maybe this is the kind of thing that Ives might have recorded, had he been alive in the 60s! With work by Byrd himself, plus Sousa, Cohan, and others. (Rock, Out Sound) LP, Vinyl record album

Eugene ChadbourneThere'll Be No Tears Tonight ... CD
Parachute/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1980. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99
One of the most compelling albums ever recorded by guitarist Eugene Chadbourne – a set billed as "free improvised country and western bebop" – and which features Chadbourne serving up these wild variations on tunes by Carl Perkins, Roger Miller, David Allen Coe, Bobby Bare, Merle Haggard, and other country music legends! The album's much more Eugene than Nashville – although Chadbourne does sing lyrics on all of the tunes, but in a way that's very offbeat and hardly unlike the originals at all – as is his guitar work, which is acoustic and all twisted and turned up in all the offbeat phrasings you might expect! Much of the record is Chadbourne on vocals and electric dobro – but the set also features some drums by David Licht, saxes from John Zorn, and cello from Tom Cora. Titles include "The Last Word In Lonesome Is Me", "I'm The Only Hell My Mama Ever Raised", "Georgia In A Jug", "Motel Time Again", "Dang Me", "Window Shopping", "Jealous Loving Heart", "Mr Record Man", and "Swingin Doors". Henning ChristiansenDen Rode Skov (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Penultimate Press (Sweden), 1986. New Copy Gatefold ... $23.99
A wild mix of electric and acoustic sounds from Henning Christiansen – done as a soundtrack for a film that's represented with images inside the cover – images that make the movie look as wild as the music on the record! Sounds come from a variety of sources – glass bowls, tubes, piano, baritone horn, synthesizer, and many voices – but all often abstracted by the production, and taken into territory where even the more familiar moments get completely changed up – with a disorienting vibe that's almost an 80s evolution of earlier electro-acoustic modes. Titles include "The Mirror", "The Red Door", "Wolf Song", "Durand's Flute", "The End", "Landscape With Wolves Bed", and "The Blue Room". (Soundtracks, Out Sound) LP, Vinyl record album
(Pressed on red vinyl – with a nice booklet of images inside the gatefold cover!)

Suzanne CianiLixiviation – Ciani/Musica Inc 1969 to 1985 ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $19.99
Heavy electro work from Suzanne Ciani – an artist who peaked a bit later than some of her sound library contemporaries – which means she was able to contribute music experimental films, record productions, and video games – and not just the usual mainstream outlets! Ciani's electronics here are a great mix of modes – both analogue and digital – and her sounds often have a darkness that's really compelling, especially when you consider the ways some of them were used in areas that reached some larger audiences – really cool little spooky bits that underscore the more potent ways that electronic sounds were often used in the 70s generation. The music is light years beyond the playfulness of Perry & Kingsley – and has none of the softness of Ciani's later new age sides – a great revelation that will hopefully get her the recognition she deserves. Titles include "Atari Video Games Logo", "Princess With Orange Feet", "Paris 1971", "Live Buchla Concert 1975", "Sound Of Wetness", "Eighth Wave", "Liberator Atari TV Spot", "Pop & Pour Coca Cola Logo", and "Lixiviation".
