✨✧ Jon Appleton & Don CherryHuman Music (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Water, 1969. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic record – and a really mindblowing mix of spiritual jazz and electronics! The set is an amazing collaboration between trumpeter Don Cherry and pioneering electronic musician Jon Appleton – one of those rare meetings of the minds that goes far deeper than you'd expect! On the set, Cherry's trumpet, flute, and percussion is heavily processed by Appleton – often in ways that are organic enough to keep with Cherry's other experiments of the time, and with the "Human Music" title of the set – but sometimes with the more playful feel of Appleton's other music from the time. The mix of electronics and improvisation is amazing – years ahead of its time, and with a haunting sound that works perfectly against Cherry's style of restrained spiritualism. The LP's got 4 long tracks – "Boa", "Oba", "Abo", and "Bao" – all recorded live in the studio! CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Don" and "Jon". CD

Beaver & KrauseNonesuch Guide To Electronic Music ... LP
Nonesuch, 1968. Near Mint- 2LPs + Book ... $24.99
One of the most electronic albums that Beaver & Krause ever recorded – a set that was issued as a Guide To Electronic Music, but which has a way more to offer than just a simple demonstration record! Unlike most other B&K albums, which can feature a bit of rock mixing in with the moog, this one is almost entirely analogue electronics – often played in a stark, spare way that has plenty of spooky tones – but also works beautifully together in a mode that's similar to other experimental electronic sets from the time, such as Morton Subotnick's contemporaneous records for Nonesuch. The tracks are very short, with concentrated bursts of sound, and have titles like "White Sound", "Ribbon Controller", and "Sawtooth". Comes in a box with a very cool book that explains a lot of different properties of electronic music. Great for sample-heads or for junior knob twiddlers. 2 LPs strong! Joanna BroukHearing Music ... CD
Numero, Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $12.99 17.98
Beautiful sounds from Joanna Brouk – an artist who was sometimes lost amidst the new age scene of the 80s, but one who's got a much deeper, more intellectual approach overall! True, Brouk's music does have a certain meditative spirit – but she also was a student of Terry Riley and Robert Ashley, and drank deep of the new compositional spirit of the time – especially in the work of Riley, which is often reflected here, but in a more contemplative way than his own recordings. Music sometimes features a core line on flute, opening up and unfolding slowly – and there's also some nice piano, and even a bit of conch shell and Orca sounds too. Double-length set features the usual strong Numero Group level of notes and history – and contains 22 tracks in all, some of which were only ever issued on cassette! CD

✨✧ Brian EnoAmbient 1 – Music For Airports ... CD
Virgin/EG (UK), 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark moment – both for Brian Eno, and for experimental music in general! Although Eno began his solo run with some searing, guitar-heavy records that were even wilder than his early work with Roxy Music – he also began experimenting with more sensitive aspects of sound on albums like Another Green World and Before & After Science – an approach he takes here to the farthest degree, by opening up himself and creating a whole new genre of ambient music in the process! Gone are the raspy, sometimes nasty vocals – and in their place is virtually nothing – just beautifully open music that uses scores that are somewhat cyclical – but at a pace that's very different than the minimalism of the period – and maybe even more minimal too. The record features four long tracks, one with piano by Robert Wyatt – really beautiful stuff, like some strange dark sonic crystal that fell out of the skies years ago, and which still remains a mystery to all ears that stumble upon it! Edgar VareseComplete Works Of Edgar Varese Vol 1 (Complete Works/Music Of Edgar Varese/Sound Spectacular) (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CDs ... $19.99 25.99 About September 3, 2021
A trio of albums that represent important early recordings of compositions by groundbreaking sonic genius Edgar Varese! First is the album Complete Works – an early series of recordings supervised by composer Edgard Varese – featuring versions of what were then his complete works! The record begins with two larger pieces – readings of "Integrales" and "Octandre" conducted by Frederic Waldman, working with the New York Wind Ensemble, who provide some very haunting tones, with additional percussion from the Julliard Percussion Orchestra on the first piece, which is a bit more dramatic. Rene Le Roy continues on the flute solo piece "Density 21.5", and the Julliard Percussion Orchestra comes back for a reading of the classic "Ionisation". The last work is one of the most striking – the three-part "Interpolations", which features "organized sound" compositions, realized on magnetic tape – one of Varese's haunting moves into early electronic music! Next is the Columbia album Music Of Edgar Varese – key Robert Craft takes on three earlier compositions, and the debut of "Poeme Electronique", which was created at the 1958 Brussels World Fair! "Ionisation" has a complex mix of percussion instruments, played by thirteen players – with a quality that's almost a key precursor to the music of Harry Partch. "Density 21.5" is a haunting piece for solo flute – filled with unusual tones and textures – and "Integrales" has a fuller orchestral presentation, and a nicely bombastic vibe, with woodwind tones and percussion colliding beautifully! That sound continues in "Octandre" – a 20s composition that shows just how far Varese was ahead of his time – as does "Hyperprism", from the same year, which is even more dramatic. "Poem Electronique" has a very different approach – all analogue electronics, used in an illustration of Varese's concept of "organized sound", but with a feel that's similar to the best musique concrete material of the 50s. Last up is the Columbia album Sound Spectacular – which offers three very different slices of the genius of Edgar Varese – presented here on a set of classic Columbia recordings from the early 60s! "Arcana" is perhaps the most ambitious work here – structured for an orchestra of 120 musicians, 70 of whom are string players – although the core energy of the piece seems to come from the 8 percussionists who handle a wide variety of instruments – creating those stark sounds that mark some of Varese's most important compositions – which the strings, brass, and woodwinds cluster around in equally powerful ways! "Deserts" is a piece that's more subtle, and much longer – mixing a variety of electronic sounds and instrumental moments, with shifting sonic spaces and volumes throughout – all to make up a side-long recording filled with moody moments and more powerful electronic bursts. "Offrandes" is a selection of two songs – in a haunting blend of woodwind instruments, percussion, and trumpet – plus vocals from soprano Dona Precht. CD

VariousNew Improvised Music From Buenos Aires ... CD
ESP, Mid 2010s. Used ... $9.99
They're not lying with the title – as the set features a rich array of underground improvised music recorded in Argentina in recent years – brought together by ESP Records at a level that almost rivals the way they exposed that scene in the 60s through their release of the Steve Lacy album The Forest & The Zoo! The style here is much more varied, and maybe even more varied than the work you'd get in a European album of improvised music – as it's clear that these artists aren't above to let any more familiar strictures of jazz hold them back, and move into modes that resonate equally strongly with avant-classical and electro-acoustic music too. Titles include "Transicion" by Fulgor Al Bies, "La Playa Pequna" by Norris Trio, "Relampagos" by Duquesa, "18:18" by Data Peluda, "Improvisation On Graphic Score" by Pablo Diaz Quinteto, and "Improvisation 0681" by Cinetica. CBS/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1987. New Copy 3LPs (reissue)... $88.99 89.99
An incredible project from composer Philip Glass – the third in his cycle of operas that helped transform the world of classical music – and maybe the most creative of the bunch! Glass based the text is taken from original sources, and sung in original languages – quite a feat for the singers involved, and a wonderful combination to the orchestrations – which are heavy in the kinds of rhythmic flows that we always love in the composer's music – using keyboards, woodwinds, and fantastic voices in long-flowing minimalist modes! Shalom Goldman worked with Glass on the vocals – and this performance features Dennis Russell Davies at the head of the Stuttgart State Opera orchestra and chorus. LP, Vinyl record album

Philip GlassDance Nos 1 to 5 (3LP set – 180 gram pressing) ... LP
CBS/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 3LP ... $42.99 49.99
Seminal work from minimalist genius Philip Glass – a set that was issued during the same decade that saw his important opera box sets define his career – but one that also hearkens back to some of the leaner experimental modes of his early days! Part of the set was recorded in 1979, the rest closer to the mid 80s release of the record – and the music was originally conceived as a project with artist Sol LeWitt and choreographer Lucinda Childs – but stands very strongly on its own as a way of exploring the leaner modes of expression from Glass. At times, the approach is very similar to the Steve Reich sound of the early 70s – especially on "Dance No 2" and "Dance No 4" – both of which are solo organ pieces. The other three dance pieces have a fuller feel – still lots of organ (and we love Glass' preference for a Farfisa!) – mixed with sax and flute lines, and a bit of voice. Beautiful all the way through! LP, Vinyl record album

Philip GlassDance Pieces (180 gram pressing) ... LP
CBS/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Don't let the 80s-styled cover, and the word "dance" put you off – as the set's filled with beautiful music from Philip Glass – two works done at a time when the composer was maybe at his greatest power, each for two difference dance-related projects! Side one features "In The Upper Room" – done for choreographer Twyla Tharp, and with full orchestrations that are wonderful – very much in the spirit of some of his soundtrack material for Koyaanisqatsi – but without some of the deeper tones and vocal chorus parts. At times, the piano is at the forefront – played by Michael Riesman – but strings and woodwinds are key, too, as the piece shifts through five different dances. "Glasspiece" was done for Jerome Robbins, and has a bit more keyboards at the start, like some of Glass' smaller group 70s work – but then brings in woodwinds and strings in a nice way, before moving back to more keyboards in the final third, which is a reworking of a passage from the opera Akhnaten. Sony/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1993. New Copy 2LP ... $37.99 39.99
A beautiful orchestral work from Philip Glass – a set that features the long piece "Itaipu", and the shorter "The Canyon" – both handled with a mix of instrumentation and voices that really gives the music a sense of majesty! Although Robert Shaw recorded some relatively mundane vocal records for RCA back in the postwar years, he's really at his best here – using the voices next to the bold brass, strings, and woodwinds with a sense of formation that often uses the lower end of the sonic spectrum in a great way – maybe a bit reminiscent of Glass' soundtrack recordings for Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi, with some obvious ties to his 80s opera work too. An amazing record, and one that forever transformed the sound of opera in the US – the amazing summation of all the many musical ideas that Philip Glass had been cooking up since the 60s, done as a mindblowing stage presentation with Robert Wilson! Voices, organ, reeds, and piano come together in wonderful lines that go on and on, seemingly forever, in endless variations and rivulets of sound – as simple in structure as the leaner small combo minimalist work from Glass – but with a very different style in the fuller setting, with a sonic quality that still is as groundbreaking today as it was back in the 70s! 4LP set features all acts, plus the very cool "Knee Play" segments too! Basta/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1950s/1960s. New Copy 3LP ... $48.99 52.98
Amazing! This is one of the coolest sets we've seen in years – and everything about it is fantastic, from the package right down to the triple-length set of music! The set features rare unreleased recordings from Raymond Scott's legendary Manhattan Research electronic music studios – originally set up in 1946, and home to some of Scott's landmark early work on non-acoustic music during the 50s and 60s. Far from being the sort of turgid, dark knob-twiddling that computer music later became in the academy, Scott's early experiments are filled with a sense of whimsy and joy – exported directly from his early cartoon-based work, and applied in a fantastic way to his evolving musical inventions! The LP edition comes in three separate sleeves, plus a great 8 page booklet of notes, in a brilliant graphic style that complements the package even further! Don't forget the music, though – because it's totally fantastic – and kind of reminds us of bits of Jon Appleton's Syntonic Menagerie, Pierre Henry's early Musique Concrete, and later punk-era DIY electronics. That doesn't even come close to pinning it down, though – and with 3 LPs worth of material, the scope of the work is amazing! LP, Vinyl record album

An album with a really beautiful title – a reference to "My Favorite Things", perhaps – and one that's got a sound that's equally beautiful to match – very different than some of the noisier music we've heard from Eivind Aarset in the past! Yet as with all his other great records, there's a real sense of abstraction here – as Eivind plays guitar, bass, and adds in plenty of electronics – next to work from Jan Bang on a range of samples, programs, and editing – a sense of sound that's layered, sometimes densely, but never darkly – almost taking us back to EG Records territory right at the end of the 70s. The set features a few guests along the way – Nils Petter Molvaer plays trumpet on one track – but most tunes are quite spare, and very lovely. The work is on the farther side of cosmic jazz – almost hearkening towards more meditative modes at times – such as the later recordings of Laraaji – but with elements that are also borrowed from Indian music and other global sources, often presented and produced in a way that the sonic elements bubble into a heady aural space that's difficult to navigate without letting yourself go entirely. One of the spookiest albums we've ever heard from moog maestro Mort Garson – way darker and more complex than his Wozzard Of Id or moogy horoscope projects – with a feel that's much more like his legendary Black Mass album! Like that one, there's a fair current of supernatural running through the mix – an early use of the electronics to explore the darker corners of reality, served up with lots of cool 70s occult touches – in a way that's oddly more timeless than some of the later projects of this nature from the industrial generation. Garson's range of tones is wonderful – from fuzzy bassy bits, to sparkling keyboard lines, to lots of spacey sounds in between – and titles include "I Ching", "Tarot", "Deja Vu", "Seance", "Sorcerer", and "Astral Projection". One of the most bizarre early works by Italian composer Franco Battiato – a record whose original cover featured a fetus on the cover, an inside image of his paper-mache mother, with a walk-in birth canal, and a subtitle that reads "return to the new world"! The musical style mixes Battiato's mid 70s electronic minimalism with an approach that still retains elements of experimental rock – in that the songs have straighter vocal passages than some of his more abstract work, with lyrics in Italian in a fairly conventional format, layered over strange textures on keyboards, sound effects, and electronics. There's some of the spaciousness you might hear with 70s Gary Burton on ECM – but Brennan's music is even more open and thoughtful – never forcing the moment too much, and clearly working with a strong knowledge of her instruments, but not in a way that has to do anything to prove itself. Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2021. New Copy 4CD ... $26.99 30.00
Mindblowing work on solo flute – done by a performer who's always captivated us in a live setting, but who really seems to knock things out of the park on this massively extended set! The title of the package is from a work by Edgard Varese for solo flute, first composed in 1936 – and an amazing showcase for the sense of subtle tones and textures that Varese brought to his music in the early part of the 20th Century. Chase takes off from that piece, and offers up compositions by sixteen composers, each of them a masterpiece – handled by Claire with a very organic approach to the sound, as things build up beautifully, in a very resonant way – on a variety of flutes that are occasionally augmented by a small bit of electronics. The spirit of the package is unique – and by the end of the whole thing, we actually find ourselves wishing that there were more than 4CDs – as Chase leaves us rapt throughout, moving through works composed by George Lewis, Pauline Oliveros, Jason Eckardt, Felipe Lara, Vijay Iyer, Tysawn Sorey, Marcos Balter, and others – plus a rendition of the original Varese work that inspired the whole project.
