Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleEntourage ... CD
Folkways, 1973. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
Beautiful sounds from the Entourage ensemble – a record that's got a really meditative blend of acoustic elements with a few electric touches – used in ways that start in jazz, then move way beyond! Instrumentation includes guitar, flute, keyboards, violin, and mbira – coming together with really unusual inflections that are partly borrowed from Eastern sources – like Noh theater, or Balinese music – but which unfurl with a more freewheeling, American underground vibe as well! No sounds are ever too sharp, and there's almost a hint of the instrumental experiments in the 80s underground – such as work by Penguin Cafe Orchestra or Soft Verdict – but with an earthier feel overall. Titles include "Jattle Boxes", "Giraffes", "Solo For Electric Viola", "Michael's Song", "Silver Drum", and "Percussion Dance". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

✨✧ Jon Appleton & Don CherryHuman Music (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Water, 1969. New Copy ... $14.99 17.98
A fantastic record – and a really mindblowing mix of spiritual jazz and electronics! The set is an amazing collaboration between trumpeter Don Cherry and pioneering electronic musician Jon Appleton – one of those rare meetings of the minds that goes far deeper than you'd expect! On the set, Cherry's trumpet, flute, and percussion is heavily processed by Appleton – often in ways that are organic enough to keep with Cherry's other experiments of the time, and with the "Human Music" title of the set – but sometimes with the more playful feel of Appleton's other music from the time. The mix of electronics and improvisation is amazing – years ahead of its time, and with a haunting sound that works perfectly against Cherry's style of restrained spiritualism. The LP's got 4 long tracks – "Boa", "Oba", "Abo", and "Bao" – all recorded live in the studio! CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Don" and "Jon". CD

Beaver & KrauseNonesuch Guide To Electronic Music ... LP
Nonesuch, 1968. Near Mint- 2LPs + Book ... $24.99
One of the most electronic albums that Beaver & Krause ever recorded – a set that was issued as a Guide To Electronic Music, but which has a way more to offer than just a simple demonstration record! Unlike most other B&K albums, which can feature a bit of rock mixing in with the moog, this one is almost entirely analogue electronics – often played in a stark, spare way that has plenty of spooky tones – but also works beautifully together in a mode that's similar to other experimental electronic sets from the time, such as Morton Subotnick's contemporaneous records for Nonesuch. The tracks are very short, with concentrated bursts of sound, and have titles like "White Sound", "Ribbon Controller", and "Sawtooth". Comes in a box with a very cool book that explains a lot of different properties of electronic music. Great for sample-heads or for junior knob twiddlers. 2 LPs strong! (Rock, Out Sound) LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the booklet and Nonesuch inner sleeves. NOTE – Box has a split spine held with clear tape and black electrical tape at the top, and split corners held with clear tape.)

Joanna BroukHearing Music ... CD
Numero, Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $12.99 17.98
Beautiful sounds from Joanna Brouk – an artist who was sometimes lost amidst the new age scene of the 80s, but one who's got a much deeper, more intellectual approach overall! True, Brouk's music does have a certain meditative spirit – but she also was a student of Terry Riley and Robert Ashley, and drank deep of the new compositional spirit of the time – especially in the work of Riley, which is often reflected here, but in a more contemplative way than his own recordings. Music sometimes features a core line on flute, opening up and unfolding slowly – and there's also some nice piano, and even a bit of conch shell and Orca sounds too. Double-length set features the usual strong Numero Group level of notes and history – and contains 22 tracks in all, some of which were only ever issued on cassette! CD

Other works include "Le Tombeau D'Edgar Poe", based on a poem by Mellarme; "Vocalise" by Tzvi Avni, which features a Berio-esque juxtaposition of voice and electronics; and "Study No 1" by Andres Lewin-Richter, an attempt to achieve tonal instrumental qualities from electronic sources. Remi Gassmann/Oskar SalaElectronic Music For The Ballet Electronics/Five Improvisations On Magnetic Tape ... LP
Westminster, 1961. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Remi Gassman and Oskar Sala each present pieces of modern electronic music in this hard to find LP for Westminster, very much in the style that was in vogue in New York in the 50s and early 60s. Gassman performs his "Electronic Music For the Ballet Electronics", which has a spare spooky sound, and Sala gives us "Five Improvisations On Magnetic Tape" – which are a bunch of short electronic tracks with a fragile, yet noisy feel to them. As the back of the record says "If anyone cares, this record has a dynamic range of 51 dB. Its lowest frequency is 15.4 cycles per second, its highest fundamental 3951 cps, the highest harmonis or overtone 15806 cps. It can blow out speakers, traumatize cats and arouse the landlord." IasosAngelic Music ... CD
Fact Of Being, 1978. New Copy ... $13.99 16.98
Dreamy sounds from Iasos – an early proponent of the world of new age music, but one that's far hipper than the bigger-label acts to come in the 80s! This set is beautifully spare and meditative – two side-long tracks, each a kind of warmer, more sentimental take on territory that Brian Eno was exploring with his ambient music projects – inflected maybe with a slightly spiritual vibe, as you'd guess from the title! Instrumentation is mostly electric, but used in ways that also really show the manner in which these early American pioneers of the format were marking their own space away from German electronic experimentation. The album features extended versions of "The Angels Of Comfort" and "Angel Play – each around the 30 minute mark! CD

Bizarre home made electronics from the enigmatic Iasos – an artist who later went onto a bit of fame in the new age, but who's working here in a trippier, spacier, almost psychedelic mode! The style is often quite personal, and almost naive – as Iasos works on guitar, keyboards, amplified flute, and other odd tape and studio effects – all flowing out with a style that's often a bit cosmic, and which could work well as some of the shorter link tracks on an early 70s Impulse album. Tunes are often relatively short, and titles include "Libra Sunrise", "Lueena Coast", "Lagoon Night", "Siren Shallows", "Aries", "Angel Play", "The Bubble Massage", and "Maha-Splendor". Denis WiseWize Music ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $18.99
Denis Wise plays all instruments on this record – everything but the kitchen sink! Oh wait – the liner notes actually indicate that he does play a kitchen sink – and a garbage disposal too – but in ways that are completely changed, as he mixes them with sounds from a variety of guitars, keyboards, percussion, and various electronic instruments – all in this wild style that's surprisingly earthy and organic! At some level, the music is more a garage version of electro-acoustic modes from the academy – but at another, it's pure unbridled creation, with a sense of sonic joy that really comes through on the best numbers. Some songs are slightly tuneful, and there's maybe a bit of offbeat abstracted vocals here and there – on tunes that include "Balfazzar", "Light As Air", "Valhalla", "Machine Time Ship", "Love In Foam & Surf", "Andro", "Celes", and "Hedonic Rapture". ✨✧ Henk Badings & Dick RaaijmakersEvolutions, Contrasts, & Electronic Music ... LP
Fantome Phonographique (Italy), Mid 50s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of early electronic music from these two Dutch giants of the field – both every bit as important as the more widely-circulated French artists of the musique concrete generation! Badings is featured here on a number of great tracks – including the sublime "Capriccio", which takes off on older violin sonata modes, by having a solo violin play next to two electronic tracks! "Genese" is even bolder, and uses five oscillators to create the tracks in three different movements! "Evolutions" is a ballet suite by Badings – short electronic pieces that point the way towards some of the dance experiments by Pierre Henry. Raaijmakers is featured in a number of shorter, more playful tracks – almost more along the lines of the 60s moog generation – with titles that include "Night Train Blue", "Song Of The Second Moon", "Contrasts", and "Colonel Bogey". Philip GlassDance Nos 1 to 5 (3LP set – 180 gram pressing) ... LP
CBS/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 3LP ... $42.99 49.99
Seminal work from minimalist genius Philip Glass – a set that was issued during the same decade that saw his important opera box sets define his career – but one that also hearkens back to some of the leaner experimental modes of his early days! Part of the set was recorded in 1979, the rest closer to the mid 80s release of the record – and the music was originally conceived as a project with artist Sol LeWitt and choreographer Lucinda Childs – but stands very strongly on its own as a way of exploring the leaner modes of expression from Glass. At times, the approach is very similar to the Steve Reich sound of the early 70s – especially on "Dance No 2" and "Dance No 4" – both of which are solo organ pieces. The other three dance pieces have a fuller feel – still lots of organ (and we love Glass' preference for a Farfisa!) – mixed with sax and flute lines, and a bit of voice. Beautiful all the way through! LP, Vinyl record album

Philip GlassDance Pieces (180 gram pressing) ... LP
CBS/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
Don't let the 80s-styled cover, and the word "dance" put you off – as the set's filled with beautiful music from Philip Glass – two works done at a time when the composer was maybe at his greatest power, each for two difference dance-related projects! Side one features "In The Upper Room" – done for choreographer Twyla Tharp, and with full orchestrations that are wonderful – very much in the spirit of some of his soundtrack material for Koyaanisqatsi – but without some of the deeper tones and vocal chorus parts. At times, the piano is at the forefront – played by Michael Riesman – but strings and woodwinds are key, too, as the piece shifts through five different dances. "Glasspiece" was done for Jerome Robbins, and has a bit more keyboards at the start, like some of Glass' smaller group 70s work – but then brings in woodwinds and strings in a nice way, before moving back to more keyboards in the final third, which is a reworking of a passage from the opera Akhnaten. Raymond ScottSoothing Sounds For Baby (180 gram orange/yellow/blue 3LP set) ... LP
Basta/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Early 60s. New Copy 3LP (reissue)... $40.99 44.99
A great record for a baby – if you want to either mess that baby up for the rest of his life, or turn him on forever to the sound of electronic music! Billed as "an infant's friend in sound" these Soothing Sounds albums were issued in the early 60's as an electronic aid to mothers with new babies – special space-age music that would help to calm and raise their kids. In reality, though, the albums are instead amazing bits of early electronic music, put together by the legendary Raymond Scott – known best to the world for his famous cartoon music decades before! Scott was an electronic music pioneer, and these albums were put together by him on his own contraptions, in conjunction with the Gesell Institute of Child Development – who were brought on board to give the whole thing a scientific pedigree. We can't say for sure how well the "science" of the music actually works – but the sound is amazing, and these records have become collectors classics in the world of analogue electronics! Jazzland (Norway), 2021. New Copy ... $22.99 29.99
An album with a really beautiful title – a reference to "My Favorite Things", perhaps – and one that's got a sound that's equally beautiful to match – very different than some of the noisier music we've heard from Eivind Aarset in the past! Yet as with all his other great records, there's a real sense of abstraction here – as Eivind plays guitar, bass, and adds in plenty of electronics – next to work from Jan Bang on a range of samples, programs, and editing – a sense of sound that's layered, sometimes densely, but never darkly – almost taking us back to EG Records territory right at the end of the 70s. The set features a few guests along the way – Nils Petter Molvaer plays trumpet on one track – but most tunes are quite spare, and very lovely. Titles include "Before The Wedding", "Two Days In June", "Purplebright", "Asphalt Lake", "Monochrome", and "Night Spell". (Jazz, Out Sound) LP, Vinyl record album

Some of the most important electro-acoustic music to come from the Brazilian scene in the 60s – recordings that are every bit as powerful as similar experiments from Europe at the time, particularly the revolutionary talents working in Paris! Jorge Antunes takes a big page from their book, and works with lots of electronic wave patterns, tape loops, and other effects – to create these sounds that often begin in more familiar postwar patterns from the academic world, but often move into much noisier territory – really pointing the way forward for the European underground of the post-punk generation. Works include "Valsa Sideral", "Contrapunctus Contra Contrapunctus", "Auto Retrato Sobre Paisaje Porteno", "Cinta Cita", and "Historia De Una Pueblo Por Nacer". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA/Sacred Bones, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the spookiest albums we've ever heard from moog maestro Mort Garson – way darker and more complex than his Wozzard Of Id or moogy horoscope projects – with a feel that's much more like his legendary Black Mass album! Like that one, there's a fair current of supernatural running through the mix – an early use of the electronics to explore the darker corners of reality, served up with lots of cool 70s occult touches – in a way that's oddly more timeless than some of the later projects of this nature from the industrial generation. Garson's range of tones is wonderful – from fuzzy bassy bits, to sparkling keyboard lines, to lots of spacey sounds in between – and titles include "I Ching", "Tarot", "Deja Vu", "Seance", "Sorcerer", and "Astral Projection". Purple Pyramid, Late 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $18.99 19.98
A great package – one that features some wildly experimental work from French electronics whiz Philippe Besombes! First up is the album Libra – tripped out electronics meet progressive rock jamming – all in a weird and wonderful film score from the early 70s! The record's one of the best by French experimentalist Philippe Besombes from the time – and it's got a style that sort of starts in the territory of Francois De Roubaix similar electronic work for film – but gets a lot darker and noisier right away! There's a textural depth here that's really great – almost a pre-industrial music exploration of sounds – but the work's also not that over-indulgent, either – and Besombes always has a great way of getting back to a tune, especially on the shorter tracks. Titles include "La Plage", "Rugby", "Ceremonie", "Hache 06", "La Ville", "Les Cosmonautes", "Tis A Song", "Boogimmick", and "PJF 261". Next is the record Esombeso – also release as Ceci Est Cela – a strange mix of sound library electronics and much more experimental work from Philippe Besombes – a set that carries echoes of some of the best Italian soundtrack electronics of the 70s, but which also features much darker, more turgid moments as well! The album collects some of Besombes' performances for ballet and other settings – and stands as an even starker document of his talents than some of the other albums issued under his name in the 70s. Titles include "Pawa"," Geant", "Seul", and "Ceci Est Cela". Next are two more albums done under the name Hydravion – both of which show Besombes turning his electronics into tighter, more song-based territory – although not without some noise from time to time – shorter tracks that sometimes get a bit tuneful, but which are still light years from mainstream music of the period. CD set also features bonus tracks for the first two albums – 8 more numbers that include "L'Or Des Fous", "Traversee", "Trio", "Piano Prepare", "Orgue Hache", and "Chocolate Cream". Fantastic sounds from Tim Blake – an artist who previously worked with Gong, and sometimes worked with Hawkwind – but who really came into his own on this legendary album of electronics! Tim works here on a self-constructed "crystal machine" – a bank of electronics that was often played in performance to front some trippy film installations (as shown on the cover) – which perfectly suited the stretched-out spacey style of his music! A beautiful example of the really special sort of instrumental record that was coming out of Japan in the early 80s – music that's spare and minimal, but quite different than any sort of similar projects from other parts of the globe! Satoshi Ashikawa creates sounds in ways that resonate both with the ancient and contemporary, organic and urban, at a level that's very slow-building and striking in its careful use of sound and space – served up here on instrumentation that includes vibes from Midori Takada, piano from Tomoko Sono, and harp from Yuko Utsumi – always tuneful, but in ways that are more like a natural progression of sound than conventional music. Titles include "Prelude", "Still Park", "Still Sky", "Wrinkle", and "Image Under The Tree". (Rock, Out Sound) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John CageJohn Cage (Tomato) ... LP
Tomato, 1978. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A great collection of earlier compositions by Cage – most of which we prefer to later work, because of their striking and bracing approach to the music. Titles include "She Is Asleep", a duet for voice & prepared piano, "A Room", for prepared piano, "Two Pastorales", for prepared piano, "Seven Haiku", for prepared piano, "And The Earth Shall Bear Again", for prepared piano. Joshua Pierce plays piano – and the prepared piano sides sound great! LP, Vinyl record album

Walter CarlosWell-Tempered Synthesizer ... LP
Columbia, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Walter Carlos (now Wendy) performs electronic versions of many classics on the Moog. If nothing else, this is an interesting period piece, though on a certain level we're quite fond of it, oth in it's performance and it's motivation. Moogy takes of Monteverdi's "Orfeo" suite, several Scarlatti sonatas, Handel's "Water Music", Brandenberg's "Concerto no 4 in G Major" and Monteverdi's "Domine Ad Adjuvandum". (Now Sound, Out Sound) LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a trace of a price sticker and light wear.)

Claire ChaseDensity 2036 (4CD set) ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2021. New Copy 4CD ... $26.99 30.00
Mindblowing work on solo flute – done by a performer who's always captivated us in a live setting, but who really seems to knock things out of the park on this massively extended set! The title of the package is from a work by Edgard Varese for solo flute, first composed in 1936 – and an amazing showcase for the sense of subtle tones and textures that Varese brought to his music in the early part of the 20th Century. Chase takes off from that piece, and offers up compositions by sixteen composers, each of them a masterpiece – handled by Claire with a very organic approach to the sound, as things build up beautifully, in a very resonant way – on a variety of flutes that are occasionally augmented by a small bit of electronics. The spirit of the package is unique – and by the end of the whole thing, we actually find ourselves wishing that there were more than 4CDs – as Chase leaves us rapt throughout, moving through works composed by George Lewis, Pauline Oliveros, Jason Eckardt, Felipe Lara, Vijay Iyer, Tysawn Sorey, Marcos Balter, and others – plus a rendition of the original Varese work that inspired the whole project. Tony Conrad and FaustOutside The Dream Syndicate ... LP
Superior Viaduct, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
The first-ever full album of music from Tony Conrad – issued in the early 70s after years of Conrad's secret input to the global avant garde – including some key years in New York, where he influenced John Cale and a generation of others who rose to greater fame! This set really has Conrad breaking out with a boldness right from the start – moving away from the arty underground, and trying to hit some more creative interplay with the more adventurous rock scene – which, in this case, includes strong work on the record by the young Faust – who turn out to be a perfect vehicle for Conrad's ideas of minimal sound progressions and tonal textures! Each side of the record features one long track – with heavy drums at the core, ala Faust – mixed with guitars, violin, and other waves of sound – almost in a pulsing space that recalls Cale's work with Terry Riley, or which is a more serious take on modes that Can was experimenting with too – although with a starkness and darkness that really lives up to the cover image. Titles include "The Side Of The Machine" and "The Side Of Man & Womankind". LP, Vinyl record album
