MEVUnited Patchwork ... LP
Horo/Alternative Fox (UK), 1977. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99
A return to classic form for MEV – after some of the more tripped-out experiments of the early 70s – and a record that's also very much at home on the Horo label, thanks to a very freewheeling sense of improvisation! The founding trio of the group are at the core – Frederick Rzewski on acoustic and electric piano, Alvin Curran on synthesizer, piano, and vocals, and Richard Teitelbaum on synthesizers and shells – and they're joined by two key other musicians – Steve Lacy on soprano sax and Karl Berger on vibes, piano, and electric piano – players who really at a lot of creative dimensions to the music, not to mention a very strong sense of improvisation. The whole thing is a stunning mix of free jazz and electronics – with tracks that include "Fox", "Slugging Rocks", "Psalm", "What Is Freedom", "Cross Over Two", "Dewline", "Sea Line", and "Via Della Luce". David TornCloud About Mercury ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1986. Used ... $8.99
One of those records that really took the ECM approach of the 70s into new modes for the 80s – a set that might be called post-jazz, or post-fusion – even though it's got some of the best elements of both, transformed by the players in the lineup! David Torn leads the group on electric and acoustic guitars – but the set's an equal effort from everyone involved – with trumpets and electronics from Mark Isham, Chapman stick and synth bass from Tony Levin, and both acoustic and electric percussion from Bill Bruford – a player who seems to inspired Torn with his own previous instrumental recordings. Titles include "The Mercury Grid", "Network Of Sparks", "Previous Man", and "Three Minutes Of Pure Entertainment", a song that's actually seven minutes in length! (Jazz, Out Sound) CD

VariousNew Improvised Music From Buenos Aires ... CD
ESP, Mid 2010s. New Copy ... $12.99
They're not lying with the title – as the set features a rich array of underground improvised music recorded in Argentina in recent years – brought together by ESP Records at a level that almost rivals the way they exposed that scene in the 60s through their release of the Steve Lacy album The Forest & The Zoo! The style here is much more varied, and maybe even more varied than the work you'd get in a European album of improvised music – as it's clear that these artists aren't above to let any more familiar strictures of jazz hold them back, and move into modes that resonate equally strongly with avant-classical and electro-acoustic music too. Titles include "Transicion" by Fulgor Al Bies, "La Playa Pequna" by Norris Trio, "Relampagos" by Duquesa, "18:18" by Data Peluda, "Improvisation On Graphic Score" by Pablo Diaz Quinteto, and "Improvisation 0681" by Cinetica.
