Gabor SzaboDreams (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Skye/Ebalunga (Austria), 1968. New Copy ... $18.99 19.98
The guitar genius of Gabor Szabo – set to magnificent arrangements by Gary McFarland! The set's one of the most sophisticated albums Szabo ever cut – and has a slow-building style that steps off of his Impulse years with a deeper, broader vision of music. By the time of the set, McFarland himself was hitting a more contemplative style in his own music – and you can hear that shift in this album as well, especially in the moodier, mellower moments. Instrumentation includes violin, cello, and French Horn – all used sparingly to augment Szabo's small combo with piano by McFarland! Titles include lots of originals – "The Fortune Teller", "Half The Day Is Night", "Galatea's Guitar", and "Lady In the Moon". CD features bonus tracks – single edits of "Fire Dance" and "Ferris Wheel". (Jazz, Now Sound) CD

✨✧ Gabor Szabo1969 ... LP
Skye/Everland (Austria), 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of Gabor Szabo's amazing late 60s albums for the Skye label – trippy, jazzy, and with a mod exotica vibe that would never be matched again! Gabor's playing guitar in a two-guitar frontline, which makes for lots of dreamy interplay between the strings – a shifting pattern of sound that's even more exotic than some of Szabo's earlier work on Impulse, thanks to added help from guitarist Francois Vaz. The rest of the group is great too – and features mighty Mike Melvoin on organ, plus fender bass, cello, and percussion – all produced by Gary McFarland with a wonderfully evocative feel! Titles include "Dear Prudence", "Stormy", "Walk Away Renee", "Michael From Mountains", "I've Just Seen A Face", and "You Won't See Me". (Jazz, Now Sound) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gabor SzaboJazz Raga ... LP
Impulse, 1966. Very Good- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest albums ever cut by guitarist Gabor Szabo – a set that also has him playing sitar as well! The album's got a sound that's as groovy as you'd expect from the title – a mix of Gabor's usual jazz modes, which are already pretty darn great, and some of the Indian music sounds that were bubbling under in the 60s – a wicked little blend that makes for an album we've treasured for years! Rhythms often hit that breezy Spellbinder mode of Gabor's Impulse years, but the addition of sitar and tablas makes for a great change too – one of the best chapters in Szabo's legendary 60s years. Bernard Pretty Purdie plays drums on all cuts, and titles include "Raga Doll", "Search for Nirvana", "Ravi", "Krishna", "Sophisticated Wheels", "Comin Back", "Summertime", "Mizrab", and "Walking On Nails". (Stereo orange & black label pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Cover is nice.)

✨✧ Gabor SzaboSpellbinder ... CD
Impulse, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
Breezy brilliance from the legendary Gabor Szabo – and one of the grooviest albums the Hungarian guitarist recorded during the 60s! The set's almost a tightening up of the style that Szabo first brought to prominence in his work with Chico Hamilton – a sound that's got roots in gypsy guitar, but which is also influenced by modern, Latin, and soulful styles of the 60s. There's an airiness to Gabor's guitar that's almost trippy – but which never goes too far out on the set, and really keeps a focus on the backings laid down by the album's highly rhythmic combo of Chico Hamilton, Ron Carter, Victor Pantoja, and Willie Bobo. Szabo makes a surprisingly great vocal appearance on 2 tracks – "Bang Bang" and "Autumn Leaves" – both sung in this weirdly dark style that's a great contrast to the lightness of his work on guitar. Other titles include Gabor's hit "Spellbinder", plus "Gypsy Queen", "It Was A Very Good Year", "Yearning", and "Cheetah". (Jazz, Now Sound) CD

✨✧ Gabor SzaboMore Sorcery ... LP
Impulse, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great record that's sort of a follow-up to Gabor's excellent Sorcerer LP – and like that one, features long tracks that have a spiralling modal feel that's much more serious, much more grooving, and a lot less campish than some of his other albums of the time. The album features a two-guitar lineup that mixes rhythm and melody – perfect for the tunes on the set, like "Los Matadoros", "Spellbinder", "Comin Back", and "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds". ✨✧ Gabor SzaboBacchanal ... LP
Skye, 1968. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful album from Gabor Szabo – one with the same freely grooving, slightly-psychedelic sound that he was using on his best records for the Impulse label! Two guitars head up the quintet – those of Gabor and Jim Stewart – and they trade breezy lines throughout, grooving over slyly shifting rhythm patterns from the bass, drums, and added percussion – always with a great mix of Latin, exotic, and modal influences running through the tunes. Titles include "Bacchanal", "Three Kingfishers", "Sunshine Superman", "Some Velvet Morning", "The Divided City", and a cool cover of "Theme From the Valley of the Dolls". ✨✧ Gary McFarlandIn Sound ... LP
Verve, 1965. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the grooviest albums of the 60s – a sublime blend of jazz, bossa, and easy – and a set that definitely lives up to its title! The album's probably the most perfect realization of the unique groove that Gary McFarland was going for back in the day – a mix of vibes, whistling, and wordless vocals, supported by some gently funky rhythms that use a fair bit of electric bass to underscore the groove! The lineup here is wonderful – with Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, Gabor Szabo on guitar, Grady Tate on drums, and Sadao Watanabe making a rare 60s US appearance on flute and tenor sax. Gary blends these instrumental elements perfectly for the record – and comes up with a completely unique sound that can only be described as "McFarlandy"! Amazing cuts include "Fried Bananas", "Bloop Bleep", and "Over Easy" – but the whole album's incredible, and other tracks include "The Sting Of The Bee", "Wine & Bread", "Here I Am", "The Hills Of Verdugo", and "The Moment Of Truth". ✨✧ Gary McFarlandSoft Samba Live – Jazz From The Penthouse ... LP
Century 67, 1965. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A lost treasure from the great Gary McFarland – a never-heard live recording that appears here on vinyl for the first time ever! The live performance is wonderful – a small combo date in a Seattle nightclub in the mid 60s – with a very groovy group that features Sadao Watanabe on tenor and flute, Gabor Szabo on guitar, Eddie Gomez on bass, and Joe Cocuzzo on drums – all working at a level that's like some of Gary's best music of the time for Impulse and Verve! McFarland's vibes are wonderful throughout, and ring out beautifully next to the guitar – and the inclusion of Watanabe is a great surprise, and adds in some slight bossa elements to the music too. Titles include McFarland's classic "Pecos Pete", plus "Hard Day's Night", "Train Samba", "Morning Of The Carnival", "She Loves You", and "La Vie En Rose". Note that the performance was previously on a CD/DVD set – but the track "She Loves You" appears here for the first time! (Jazz, Now Sound) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousSounds Of The Unexpected – Weird & Wacky Instrumentals From Pop's Final Frontiers ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A totally cool collection of really offbeat numbers with a space age sort of theme – tunes that run the gamut from rock instrumentals to electronic pop – with lots of stops along the space in between! The package is right up there with some of the best "themed" collections by Ace Records – not just a superb selection of tunes, but really put together in the best way possible – with thoughtful transitions between the tunes, and a huge booklet of notes and label images – with some text on the late Vicki Fox, who put together this set, and others for Ace in the past. You'll definitely recognize a few names here, but the setting makes them sound really amazing and unique – especially some of the soul, jazz, and blues artists in the mix. Titles include "Waltz In Orbit" by Ray Cathode, "Watusi Zombie" by Jan Davis, "Savage Girl" by Felix & His Fabulous Cats, "War Of The Worlds" by The Atlantics, "Caravan" by Gabor Szabo, "Hot Pot" by The Tornados, "Funky Me" by Timmy Thomas, "Uh Oh" by The Imps, "Flameout" by 101 Strings, "It's Karate Time" by Travis Wammack, "Long Sentence" by The Upsetters, "B'Wana Bongos" by Preston Epps, "Hung Over" by The Martinis, "Music To Watch Space Girls By" by Leonard Nimoy, "Aztec" by Bo Diddley, "Watusie Freeze (part 1)" by Big Walter & The Thunderbirds, and "RFD Rangoon" by The Forbidden Five. ✨✧ Gary McFarlandIn Sound/Soft Samba ... CD
Verve/Ace (UK), 1965. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of fantastic albums from vibes master and genius arranger Gary McFarland – back to back on a single CD! First up is The In Sound – one of the grooviest albums of the 60s – a sublime blend of jazz, bossa, and easy – and a set that definitely lives up to its title! The album's probably the most perfect realization of the unique groove that Gary McFarland was going for back in the day – a mix of vibes, whistling, and wordless vocals, supported by some gently funky rhythms that use a fair bit of electric bass to underscore the groove! Soft Samba is a dream of a record from Gary McFarland – lightly jazzy instrumentals with a warm bossa nova undercurrent! The style is incredible – a sweet blend of vibes, guitar, and even some light whistling – often also featuring wordless jazz vocals – scatting along with the groove in a melodic and lovely kind of way! The whole thing's incredibly charming, and even familiar tunes come across sounding quite different in McFarlands hands. Titles include "From Russia With Love", "More", "Emily", "La Vie En Rose", "The Love Goddess", and even a groovy take on "I Want To Hold Your Hand". For you true swingers, the cover includes directions for mixing a "Soft Samba Cocktail" (courtesy Spanish Sherry Institute)! (Jazz, Now Sound) CD
