Ferrante & TeicherHeavenly Sounds In Hi Fi ... LP
ABC/Paramount, 1957. Very Good+ ... $14.99
One of the best non-Winchester albums from the team of Ferrante & Teicher – not as crazy as some of their work, but still with some good elements of the piano trickery that made them famous. Titles include "Out Of This World", "East Of The Sun", "Over The Rainbow", "Stars In My Eyes", and "Stella By Starlight". Also features the original tracks "Serenade To A Star" and "Beyond The Moon". Arthur LymanYellow Bird ... LP
Hi Fi, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... $6.99 8.99
Sweet exotic sounds from the Arthur Lyman group – heavy on vibes and lots of hip percussion – recorded with a gently swaying feel that recalls the best energy of the Hawaiian scene in the postwar years! The set's one of Lyman's early solo dates – recorded Henry Kaiser Aluminum Dome in Hawaii – which you can almost hear in the way the sounds here resonate, and hang sweetly in air. The tunes are pretty mellow, but in a good way – more sonically sensitive than some more gimmicky, sound effect-heavy exotica – and titles include "Adventures in Paradise", "Andalusia", "Yellow Bird", "Arrivederci Roma", "Sweet & Lovely", "Bamboo Taboo", "Granada", and "Ravel's Bolero". Fire up that console stereo and break out the Tiki glasses! LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1966. Near Mint- ... $6.99 9.99
Swingin hi fi and big band sounds – and, as the label says, "a marriage of music and electronics – spellbinding". The "electronics" aren't moogy or anything like that, but the sound's pretty good, and there are some nice covers such as "A Taste Of Honey", "Michelle", "King Of The Road", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", and "People" plus an original called "The Soundaroundus". JBL, 1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $7.99
70s geekazoid hi-fi culture at it's finest! The folks at JBL put together this 2LP set as sort of a "bible" of a 70's understanding of hi-fi – and it's a weird mix of documentary discussion, speaker demonstration, and rock tracks by the likes of Alex Harvey and Hoyt Axton. Nutty, and chock full of open drum breaks! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nicola ConteJet Sounds Revisited (US version – with slightly different tracks) ... CD
Schema/ESL, 2002. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The genius of Nicola Conte gets the remix treatment – in this wonderful new album that steps off heavily from his massive Jet Sounds set of a few years ago! If you know Nicola, he's the wunderkind behind the Schema label – and, probably more than anyone in the world right now, one of the few producer/musicians who can really handle a retro-sounding groove. Conte's steeped in classic jazz, soundtracks, and bossa nova – all of which come into play in his music – and this set has him working with a host of able talents who help to take his unique creative vision even farther than before! US version features a slightly different track list than the European one – with titles that include "Arabesque (vocal version)" done by Micatone, "Forma 2000" reformed by Les Gammas, "Tema In Hi Fi" by Nicola Conte & Gianluca Petrella, "Jet Sounds" by Nuspirit Helsinki, "Bossa Per Due" by Thievery Corporation, "Fuoco Fatuo" by Koop, "New Standards" by Nicola Conte & Gianluca Petrella, "Love Me Till Sunday" by Nicola Conte, "Dossier Omega" redone by Espen Horne, "The In Samba" done by Kyoto Jazz Massive, "Missione A Bombay" by Eddy & Dus, and "Mambo De Los Dandies" by Gerardo Frisina. ✨✧ EsquivelExploring New Sounds In Stereo/Strings Aflame ... CD
RCA/Bar None, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
Juan Garcia's at his best here on Exploring New Sounds In Stereo – gazing into a telescope on the cover, looking at the stars and contemplating his next musical direction. For that, the session leaps into a swinging hi-fi mode that brings the hi-ghest fi-delity to the band's nutty approach to arrangements. Esquivel's definitely swinging on a star here – especially on the cuts "My Blue Heaven", "Spellbound", "Whatchamacalit", "La Ronde", and "Bella Mora". Despite the "strings" in the title on Strings Aflame, this one actually swings quite well, and has a bit of an exotic gypsy flavor to it, augmented by cool spacey production that makes the strings hum with a strange other-worldly tonality. The set's filled with the usual crazy Esquivel arrangements, and includes the cuts "Turkish March", "Andalusian Sky", "Misirlou", and "Gypsy Lament". CD

✨✧ Perez PradoBig Hits By Prado ... LP
RCA, 1960. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
They certainly got the title right on this one – as the album's overflowing with earlier hits by Perez Prado, re-recorded here for the hi-fi generation, with really swinging RCA sound! The numbers include some perennial Perez favorites – including "Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom White", "In A Little Spanish Town", "Caballo Negro", "Mambo Jambo", and the legendary "Mambo Number 5". A nice way to get all of his best stuff on wax! (Latin, Now Sound) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousUltra Lounge Vol 4 – Bachelor Pad Royale ... CD
Capitol, Late 50s/1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A lot more brash and bold than you might guess from the title – not just sleepy seduction music, but a batch of really dynamic tunes that will really push the limits of your hi-fi! Most numbers here are instrumental, although some of them have some occasional vocal refrains in the mix – and most have rhythms that are slinky and seductive – never too over the top, but filled with jazzy flourishes and some compelling instrumental moments – so much so that you'll be fine in your pad on your own, even without a girl! Titles include "Like Young" by Dave Pell, "Playboy's Penthouse" by Cy Coleman, "Shangri La" by Spike Jones, "A Shot In The Dark" by Jimmie Haskell, "Melancholy Sounds" by King Curtis, "Night Train" by Alvin Rey, "The Beast" by Milt Buckner, "Cool" by Lou Busch, "Sexe" by Line Renaud, "Caravan" by John Buzon Trio, "Spring Sprang Sprung" by Jack Fascinato, and "Theme From Our Man Flint" by Elliot Fischer. ✨✧ Don ElliottMello Sound ... LP
Decca, Mid 50s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A pretty nice set of "mood jazz in hi fi" – featuring Don on the mellophone, trumpet, and vibes – working with a surprisingly hip group that features Bill Evans, Hal McKusick, Paul Motian, and Barry Galbraith. A number of tunes feature backings by a vocal choir of 6 voices – dreamily setting a field of sound for the main soloists to work through – creating a style that actually works better here than some of Elliott's straighter jazz sides of the time. Titles include "A Waltz", "Blue Waltz", "Poinciana", "Summer Scene", "Tired Of Me", and "A Million Dreams Ago". Quite nice, with some dark and modern edges that you wouldn't expect! ✨✧ Ken Nordine & OthersSounds In Space ... LP
RCA, 1958. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A pretty cool record – even if it is mostly a "hi fi" sampler from RCA. The record demonstrates the full range of RCA's Living Stereo method – and it's got Ken Nordine narrating his way through a host of tracks from the label. As is typical with this sort of thing, about half of the music is classical – but there's also some nice numbers in the easy mode by Skitch Henderson, Ralph Flanagan, Lena Horne, and Jerome Hines. The best part is still Ken Nordine, though! (Spoken Word, Now Sound) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sid Ramin & OrchestraNew Thresholds In Sound ... LP
RCA, 1963. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Sid Ramin at his most dynamic – heard here on this sweet RCA session from the early 60s, in modes that really show the same kind of arrangements that Sid was doing for TV at the time! The feel of the record really lives up to the "new thresholds" title – as Ramin pushes the orchestra in all these colorful, vivid ways – yet still also while keeping things fluid, and a fair bit jazz at times – never letting the album just be one of those tricks for the hi-fi crowd, and still hanging on strongly to a musical mode! Tracks include "Strike Up The Band", "I Believe In You", "Bewitched", "Hernando's Hideaway", and "April In Paris". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Marty GoldWired For Sound ... CD
RCA (Spain), 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
"Current Supplied By Marty Gold" – or so reads the cover – as this is one of Gold's most dynamic albums of the 50s! The production is really great, with lots of use of effects and echo – to transform ordinary instrumental tunes into mod hi-fi affairs! The feel here is very much in the Esquivel vein – as familiar numbers are transformed by odd instrumentation and even odder production, co-arranged by Sid Ramin, with all the nutty touches of his own work. Titles include "Lonely Guitar", "Reflections In The Water", "Ti Pi Tin", "Stella By Starlight", "You're The Top", "A Foggy Day", and "In The Still Of The Night". CD

Mercury, Late 50s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A percussion-heavy batch of tracks that has Pete Rugolo starting from a mode explored heavily in the hi-fi years, but taking the genre into much jazzier territory! With the help of a large group of west coast players – including Don Fagerquist, Larry Bunker, Herbie Harper, Frank Rosolini, Jack Costanzo, and Shelly Manne – Pete really makes things swing nicely, and brings in as much dynamic energy from the horns as he gets from the percussion! Titles include "Bongo Riff", "Drumerama", "Funky Drums", "Interplay For Drums, Bass", "Artistry In Percussion", and "1+4". (Jazz, Now Sound) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ihsan Al-MunzerBelly Dance Disco – Ernest Chahoud Presents Middle Eastern Heavens ... LP
A Chahine & Fils/BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 29.99
A really fantastic little record – and one that's even better than you might expect from the title – which itself is already pretty darn fantastic! The set is upbeat and funky, but not entirely disco – more this very groovy blend of Mid-East elements and more familiar keyboards – all moving and grooving in ways that are a lot hipper than any other belly dance music we've heard! Music features piano and organ, plus a very cool "string synthesizer" by played by the leader – and there's also plenty of percussion at the core of the set, making for a nice juxtaposition with the electric elements. Titles include "Night Entertainer", "Dance Of Tenderness", "Joy Of Lina", "A Flower Of My Imagination", "Love Of Laura", "Girls Of Iskandariah", and "Once A Year". Count Basie & His OrchestraBasie Meets Bond ... LP
United Artists, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $6.99
An excellent gimmick from the United Artists label – a way of mixing their strong run of 60s soundtrack hits with the world of jazz – thanks to Count Basie and his group taking on a whole host of themes from the successful James Bond films! Count Basie brings a soulful swing to the work of John Barry, who scored most of these cuts – hitting hard on the tracks with his own smoking piano, and an orchestra filled with some of his best players – including Al Grey on trombone, Eric Dixon on saxes, and Freddie Greene on guitar – plus guest tenor work from Eddie Lockjaw Davis, an artist who wasn't credited on the session at he time. Arrangements are by Chico O'Farrill and George Williams – and titles include "Thunderball", "From Russia With Love", "007", "Girl Trouble", and "Goldfinger". (Jazz, Now Sound) LP, Vinyl record album

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana BrassGoing Places ... LP
A&M, 1965. Near Mint- ... $6.99 11.99
Herb Alpert's definitely Going Places by the time of this set – and his trademark Tijuana Brass sound proves itself to be a great fit for just about any sort of number! The album kicks off with the wonderful "Tijuana Taxi", a sublimely jaunty tune that almost takes Herb into Bacharach territory – and which is followed up by the even-greater "Spanish Flea" – an ear-popping anthem that's one of the greatest bits of 60s instrumental pop ever recorded! And over and above those two tunes, the album's still got plenty more to offer too – a wonderful array of tracks all given the Tijuana touch, with titles that include "More & More Amor", "Mae", "Walk Don't Run", "Felicia", and "Cinco De Mayo". A&M, 1962. Very Good ... $3.99
Herb Alpert's first-ever album – a runaway hit that was the birthplace of so many groovy things – not just the start of the Tijuana Brass sound, also the birth of A&M Records! The album's the first to feature Herb's trademark take on the Mexican band style – done here with a bit more "jaunty" pop stylings than in later years, including a "rocking" electric bass that kicks along nicely at the bottom of some of the more chart-oriented tunes. The first full album on A&M – and the beginning of an empire – with titles that include "The Lonely Bull", "El Lobo", "Desafinado", "Mexico", "Never On Sunday", and "Struttin With Maria". Les BaxterRitual of the Savage/Passions ... CD
Capitol/Rev-Ola (UK), 1952/1954. Used ... $9.99
Genius work from Les Baxter – two of his best albums for Capitol, back to back on one CD! Ritual Of The Savage is one of those must-have albums from the 50s – a super-huge record upon its initial release, and an album that pushed the genre of exotica far further than most others at the time! Before this record, most attempts at exotica were simple instrumental pop, colored with slight worldly instrumentation – or too-dreamy recordings, putting over a sleepy version of life on the islands. Enter Les Baxter, who had an amazing ear for sounds, rhythms, and arrangements – one that was the first to record this sort of music in a way that was sonically evocative, and could stand on its own without other referents. Instrumentation is often conventional, but used oddly here – and Baxter's original compositions are all pretty darn great – playful without being goofy, and nicely mixing Latin and Pacific rhythms at the bottom. Titles include "Busy Port", "The Ritual", "Coronation", "Jungle Jalopy", and Les' original version of "Quiet Village". Heck, even the cover is gorgeous – with a brilliant blue illustration of some guy putting the moves on a woman amidst spooky tribal relics! The Passions is a really obscure box set recording – done as Les Baxter's classic exploitation of "a woman's passions", using vocalist Bas Sheva in the role of the tormented female! Shiva's got a bold, evocative style that's not unlike Yma Sumac – and she sings here wordlessly, as an added instrument on top of Baxter's orchestrations – playing the role of the inner psyche of woman, on titles that include "Lust", "Terror", "Joy", "Hate", "Ecstasy", and "Despair"! The whole thing's a mini docu-drama in sound – beautifully recorded in a flurry of red, blue, and other chromatic hues – not as exotic as Baxter's other work from the 50s, but equally great as a modern sonic psychoanalytic text! Les BaxterSacred Idol ... LP
Capitol, 1960. Near Mint- ... $49.99
A real standout set from the end of Les Baxter's run at Capitol Records – originally scored for a film that was never released, but a great set of tracks that more than stands strongly on its own! The theme here is a Mexican/Latin American one – explored by Baxter with his trademark blend of larger orchestrations and lighter exotica touches – often swirling around in an extremely evocative mode that makes us wish the film had been issued to the public, and at a few key moments even hinting at the funkier modes that would follow on some of Les' later work for other labels. Titles include "Aqueducts", "Gardens Of The Moon", "Pyramid Of The Sun", "Temple Of Gold", and "Procession Of The Princes". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original rainbow label stereo pressing. Includes the Capitol Full Dimensional Stereo inner sleeve, with some aging a bit of pen. Cover has light aging, some ringwear in back, and small seam splits.)

GAD (Poland), 1969. New Copy ... $14.99 24.99
A heavily percussive set from the Polish scene at the end of the 60s – music that appears here for the first time as a commercial release, and which has a mix of drums and different instruments that would have been right at home as a late 50s Living Stereo album from RCA! The music has a very dynamic range – with a mix of percussive sources at the bottom, used in ways that move between Latin and exotica – topped with flute on a number of tracks, in a way that furthers the sonic space of the tracks with some wonderful woodwind action! The whole thing's mighty nice – jazzy at times, more bachelor pad at others – with titles that include "Bank Bank", "Namiastka", "Samba Karnawalowa", "Ostryga Pustyni", "Nadszedl Czas", and "Taniec Grzebienia".
