Atomic Bomb BandAtomic Bomb Band Performing The Music Of William Onyeabor (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Luaka Bop, 2017. New Copy ... $22.99
A really fantastic album that's way better than any other tribute record we've ever heard – even though the whole thing's a tribute to the legendary William Onyeabor! Yet rather than slavishly copying Onyeabor's music, the group here take off in so many new directions – many of them very funky and filled with even more acoustic touches than in the original versions of the songs – including some great sax and trumpet lines that really give the music some depth. The group features a huge array of all-stars – members of LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, Sinkane, and The Beastie Boys – but this also isn't some project where big names are just phoning it in, as there's a very unified vibe that seems to bring out the best in everyone – including folks we might not even like in another context. Jamie Lidell sings on a few cuts, Money Mark plays keyboards on the record, and even the great Charles Lloyd delivers two great tenor solos – on titles that include "Poor Boy", "Love Is Blind", "Fantastic Man", "Good Name", "Heaven & Hell", and "Love Me Now". Fantastic fold-out cover design too! (Global Grooves, New Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition vinyl only pressing – in a fold-out poster cover!)

BB Boogie (Daz I Kue)Standing On The Wall ... LP
R2 (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
It's been many years since Daz I Kue first rocked our world with his grooves in Bugz In The Attic – and since that time, he's only gotten stronger and more soulful as a solo act – to the point where a new project like this almost blows away some of his previous work! As you might guess from the cover and name, the project has a very vintage feel – somewhere in the territory of late 70s/early 80s clubby funk, with warmer instrumentation than back in the Bugz days – and a fantastic sense of production that could almost have you playing this set alongside later Funkadelic material, or early work from Prince! Yet there's also a sharpness, too – that new vision of funk that's always made the London scene so wonderful – from the Incognito/Brand New Heavies years onward. Khari Simmons plays bass on most of the record – and the bass is definitely in the lead – and singers include Vanessa Freeman, Greg Blackman, Leroy Burgess, DNS, Monica Blaire, Joy Jones, and others – really helping flesh out the sound on tracks that include "Opposition", "Sweating & Shaking", "Wanna Be With You", "We Can Do It", "Standing On The Wall", "In The Middle", "Let Love Grow", "Stay Woke", and "RAyanne". CotoneteInside Outside – First EP Series Vol 1 ... 12-inch
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2017. New Copy ... $19.99
A jazzy instrumental with a very classic vibe – served up with some especially nice keyboard work from Florian Pellissier – who you might know from records issued under his own name! "Inside Outside" owes a fair bit to 70s funky jazz for inspiration – but it's also got a crackling sort of rhythm approach – played live, but maybe inherited a bit from the broken beat generation – which gives the music an urgently current vibe. Side one features the long core track of the tune – originally written by MPS legend Joanne Grauer – and side two features two Phil Asher/Restless Soul reworks. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Hidden OrchestraDawn Chorus (with bonus download) ... LP
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99 21.99
A record with a sound to match its evocative title – maybe the most heady work to date from Hidden Orchestra – and that's saying a lot, given the depth of their other releases! These guys definitely take the "orchestra" in their name seriously – and while the lineup is maybe around a dozen musicians, not a hundred, the sound is very complex, and made up of a shifting array of musical elements – including piano, percussion, guitar, and lots more from leader Joe Acheson – who also uses field recordings and other sonic elements alongside the group's subtle blend of woodwinds, trumpet, and bits of strings. The latter are used very sparingly – so that most of the textures have a more organic sort of quality – and although there are lyrics, the overall sound is the most important thing – almost a 21st Century underground updating of older British lyrical landscape composition – but much hipper overall. Titles include "Long Orchard", "Wingbeats", "East London Street", "Stone", "Serpentine", and "Western Isles". LP, Vinyl record album

JamiroquaiTravelling Without Moving (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Work/Sony (UK), 1996. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99
A mindblower from Jamiroquai – the album that really broke them out of the box, thanks to an increasingly complicated sense of rhythm! For the set, Jay and the group pulled up some of the more dynamic sounds from the London underground, and wove them together with their increasingly great songwriting – coming up with tunes that played beautifully on the dancefloor, yet also offered deeper listening than on previous Jamiroquai efforts! There's still some great 70s elements here, but there's also a more cosmic, righteous vibe too – a hint at spacey London to come, but sent home with a bit more polish here. Titles include "Virtual Insanity", "Cosmic Girl", "Everyday", "Alright", "High Times", "Travelling Without Moving", "Spend A Lifetime", "Use The Force", and "Didjital Vibrations". NautilusNautiloid Quest (with bonus CD) ... LP
Agogo (Germany), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $35.99 39.98
It's hard not to love a band named after the oft-sampled jazz funk masterpiece by Bob James, but Japanese trio Nautilus brings the goods on their own terms! A core trio of bassist Shigeki Umezawa, keyboardist Daisuke Takeuchi and drummer Toshiyuki Sasaki, they put a really great timeless spin on classic jazz funk grooves, with a bright sound that feels really fresh, though steeped strongly in rare groove roots! Solid mix of originals and covers, the latter including tight takes on Donald Fagen's "IGY", plus Gil Scott-Heron's "Lady Day And John Coltrane" and DNA & Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner" with beautiful vocals by Mizuki Kamata and Kei Awada on those two, plus "We Live In Brooklyn Baby", "Serengeti", "Nautilus" (natch!), "Atlantis", "Our Journal", "Nautiloid Quest", "Bill's Chill" and more. Anthony NicholsonNight Clubb-Ing – Darkwave Disko/Chillout Girls ... 12-inch
Blak Muzik, 2017. New Copy ... $9.99
A couple jams by Anthony Nicholson that are appropriately titled, and transcend expecations at the same time! "Darkwave Disko" has the feel of 80s style European disco of the post pop crossover era, with moody enough of vibe to earn the nocturnal nametag. "Chillout Girls" is a cool mix of keys, beats and sampled vocals. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Late 80s club funk from Tim Simonen, aka Bomb The Bass – big, thumping sample based DJ funk from the UK producer behind busy club hits by his own Bomb The Bass and a few international megahits by others like Seal & Nenah Cherry. Forro In The DarkSandcastle ... CD
Nacional, 2017. New Copy ... $9.99
Forro In The Dark sound better here than ever before – working with producer Kassin, on a set of tracks recorded both in Brooklyn and in Rio – with a vibe that's maybe more faithful to their Brazilian inspiration than any of their previous records! The core trio handle a fantastic amount of percussion, guitar, and reed instruments – with modes that start with the forro of their name, but also branch out into other Brazilian styles – and have some of the captivating qualities of the best independent acts from Brazil in recent years. Kassin plays on most of the record, about half the tracks feature vocals, and titles include "I Wanna Know", "Forro Da Casa Grande", "Ou Sim", "Roca De Pedra", "Craudineia No Forro", "Voce Nao E Insubstituviel", and "Drifting Away".
