BB Boogie (Daz I Kue)Standing On The Wall ... LP
R2 (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
It's been many years since Daz I Kue first rocked our world with his grooves in Bugz In The Attic – and since that time, he's only gotten stronger and more soulful as a solo act – to the point where a new project like this almost blows away some of his previous work! As you might guess from the cover and name, the project has a very vintage feel – somewhere in the territory of late 70s/early 80s clubby funk, with warmer instrumentation than back in the Bugz days – and a fantastic sense of production that could almost have you playing this set alongside later Funkadelic material, or early work from Prince! Yet there's also a sharpness, too – that new vision of funk that's always made the London scene so wonderful – from the Incognito/Brand New Heavies years onward. Khari Simmons plays bass on most of the record – and the bass is definitely in the lead – and singers include Vanessa Freeman, Greg Blackman, Leroy Burgess, DNS, Monica Blaire, Joy Jones, and others – really helping flesh out the sound on tracks that include "Opposition", "Sweating & Shaking", "Wanna Be With You", "We Can Do It", "Standing On The Wall", "In The Middle", "Let Love Grow", "Stay Woke", and "RAyanne". Build An ArkLove – Part 2 ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2010. New Copy ... $12.99
A brilliant extension of the Love set from Build An Ark – focusing on some of the more improvisational spirit that's integral to their cosmic groove! Love Part 2 is mix of intimate moments and soaring atmospherics from Carlos Nino, Miguel-Atwood Ferguson and the rest of the stellar ensemble, plus guests and fellow travelers such as vocalists Dwight Trible, Carmen Lundy, Leisei Chen and Mia Doi Todd, violinist Michael White and others. The overall vibe and instrumentation are unpredictable from one movement to the next, but there's always a hypnotic mood at play, be it spun by sparely furnished strings and percussion, earthy global jazz influences or far spacier dynamics! Titles include a lively (and live sounding) string jazz improvisational take on "What The World Needs Now Is Is Love" with passionate vocals and pared down lyrics by Leisei Chen flavored with violin, viola, cello and sitar – plus "Cosmic Tuning", "Nature", "Ginger", "Say Yes!", "Improvisation Day 1", "Improvisation Day 2", ""Improvisation Day 8", "Cadence Of The Love Messengers" and wonderfully unique take on Donny Hathaway's "Tryin Times" with vocals by Carmen Lundy and Dwight Trible. Ivan ContiAzul (Max Graef rmx, Glenn Astro rmx, Contours rmx) ... 12-inch
Far Out (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $11.99
A trio of remixes – all of which take this jazzy Brazilian tune in a very different direction! First up is Max Graef, who's really deconstructed the track – and has the keyboards kind of shining in the skies, while the bassline gets all muddy and earthy! Glenn Astro lives up to his name, by bringing the keyboards up even more, and letting them bristle with a space age vibe – and Contours bring more of a cosmic, almost 4Hero sort of groove to the tune! (Brazil, New Grooves) 12-inch, Vinyl record

CotoneteInside Outside – First EP Series Vol 1 ... 12-inch
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2017. New Copy ... $19.99
A jazzy instrumental with a very classic vibe – served up with some especially nice keyboard work from Florian Pellissier – who you might know from records issued under his own name! "Inside Outside" owes a fair bit to 70s funky jazz for inspiration – but it's also got a crackling sort of rhythm approach – played live, but maybe inherited a bit from the broken beat generation – which gives the music an urgently current vibe. Side one features the long core track of the tune – originally written by MPS legend Joanne Grauer – and side two features two Phil Asher/Restless Soul reworks. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Hidden OrchestraDawn Chorus (with bonus download) ... LP
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99 21.99
A record with a sound to match its evocative title – maybe the most heady work to date from Hidden Orchestra – and that's saying a lot, given the depth of their other releases! These guys definitely take the "orchestra" in their name seriously – and while the lineup is maybe around a dozen musicians, not a hundred, the sound is very complex, and made up of a shifting array of musical elements – including piano, percussion, guitar, and lots more from leader Joe Acheson – who also uses field recordings and other sonic elements alongside the group's subtle blend of woodwinds, trumpet, and bits of strings. The latter are used very sparingly – so that most of the textures have a more organic sort of quality – and although there are lyrics, the overall sound is the most important thing – almost a 21st Century underground updating of older British lyrical landscape composition – but much hipper overall. Titles include "Long Orchard", "Wingbeats", "East London Street", "Stone", "Serpentine", and "Western Isles". LP, Vinyl record album

Calibro 35Calibro 35 ... LP
Cinedelic (Italy), 2008. New Copy (reissue)... About February 1, 2018 (delayed)
A new combo, but one who really get the sound of older soundtracks right – particularly the late 60s/early 70s Italian generation that's inspired the name and artwork of this set! Instrumentation is nice and lean – keyboards, guitar, bass, and percussion – used more in the tight ways of a mod funk combo, but with strong soundtrack leanings in the tunes – no surprise, as the songs here are all pulled from vintage scores by Ennio Morricone, Luiz Bacalov, Armando Trovajoli, and others of the golden age of Italian soundtracks! And if you're suspicious about the sound, don't be – because these guys are totally great – no fake-retro moments, or overly programmed rhythms – just live instrumentation handled beautifully, in ways that bring something new to the tunes, but remain very faithful to their original inspiration. Titles include "Preludio", "Italia Amano Armata", "Titoli", "Notte In Bovisa", "Summertime Killer", "La Polizia S'Incazza", "Shake Balera", "Spiralys", and "Gangster Story". 18 tracks in all – more than the CD! ExplosionExplosion ... CD
Versatile (France), 2015. Used ... $9.99
A spare, spacey record from this cool French trio – a group who's maybe more laidback than you'd guess from their explosive name – and who work here with lots of great electronics from Gilbert Cohen of Chateau Flight! The record's got a vibe that's almost like some of the best German work on Sky Records at the end of the 70s – a minimal, post-prog use of sound cycles and melodic elements – served up here in a blend of guitar, keyboards, and lots of electronics. All titles are instrumental – and tunes include "Let's Love", "Raga 4", "The Duke", "Planance", "Three Worlds", and "Disco Blind". CD

Forro In The DarkSandcastle ... CD
Nacional, 2017. New Copy ... $9.99
Forro In The Dark sound better here than ever before – working with producer Kassin, on a set of tracks recorded both in Brooklyn and in Rio – with a vibe that's maybe more faithful to their Brazilian inspiration than any of their previous records! The core trio handle a fantastic amount of percussion, guitar, and reed instruments – with modes that start with the forro of their name, but also branch out into other Brazilian styles – and have some of the captivating qualities of the best independent acts from Brazil in recent years. Kassin plays on most of the record, about half the tracks feature vocals, and titles include "I Wanna Know", "Forro Da Casa Grande", "Ou Sim", "Roca De Pedra", "Craudineia No Forro", "Voce Nao E Insubstituviel", and "Drifting Away". (Brazil, New Grooves) CD
