BB Boogie (Daz I Kue)Standing On The Wall ... LP
R2 (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
It's been many years since Daz I Kue first rocked our world with his grooves in Bugz In The Attic – and since that time, he's only gotten stronger and more soulful as a solo act – to the point where a new project like this almost blows away some of his previous work! As you might guess from the cover and name, the project has a very vintage feel – somewhere in the territory of late 70s/early 80s clubby funk, with warmer instrumentation than back in the Bugz days – and a fantastic sense of production that could almost have you playing this set alongside later Funkadelic material, or early work from Prince! Yet there's also a sharpness, too – that new vision of funk that's always made the London scene so wonderful – from the Incognito/Brand New Heavies years onward. Khari Simmons plays bass on most of the record – and the bass is definitely in the lead – and singers include Vanessa Freeman, Greg Blackman, Leroy Burgess, DNS, Monica Blaire, Joy Jones, and others – really helping flesh out the sound on tracks that include "Opposition", "Sweating & Shaking", "Wanna Be With You", "We Can Do It", "Standing On The Wall", "In The Middle", "Let Love Grow", "Stay Woke", and "RAyanne". Chemical BrothersCome With Us (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Astralwerks/Virgin (Japan), 2002. Used Gatefold ... $6.99
The Chemical Brothers retreat from the mainstream club-pop landscape that fertilized their previous work, and the result is a much more lush, textured, and soulful record that finally earns them the cheers they've been receiving for years already! The hip hop beats and party bounce that made the Chemical name certainly are not out the picture on Come With Us, but the Brothers also learned the fine art of subtlety somewhere along the line and the heart of the album has a much more progressive approach, with string flourishes, hypnotic beats, soft breathy vocals lurking in the distance, and a free and floating in space trippy feel. Overall a more down tempo experience than you might be expecting from these boys – but not without its clanging crescendos – with a reverent knowledge of what made their acid house forefathers tick. Tracks include "Come With Us", "It Began In Afrika", "Galaxy Bounce", "Star Guitar", "Hoops", "My Elastic Eye", "The State We're In", "Denmark", "Pioneer Skies", The Test". CD

CotoneteInside Outside – First EP Series Vol 1 ... 12-inch
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2017. New Copy ... $8.99
A jazzy instrumental with a very classic vibe – served up with some especially nice keyboard work from Florian Pellissier – who you might know from records issued under his own name! "Inside Outside" owes a fair bit to 70s funky jazz for inspiration – but it's also got a crackling sort of rhythm approach – played live, but maybe inherited a bit from the broken beat generation – which gives the music an urgently current vibe. Side one features the long core track of the tune – originally written by MPS legend Joanne Grauer – and side two features two Phil Asher/Restless Soul reworks. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Crazy Ken BandMuro Diggin Crazy Ken Band – Mixed By Muro ... CD
Universal (Japan), Late 90s/Early 2000s. New Copy ... $29.99
A sweet collection of funk from this ultra-cool Japanese combo – all hand-picked, and served up in a special mix by DJ Muro! Crazy Ken Band have an odd name, but a warmly soulful take on funk that began in the pre-Daptone years, and which maybe shares more with the funk revival modes on the London scene at the start of the 90s – especially as the group have some of the warmer currents of Incognito or Brand New Heavies! But there's also a harder funk approach on some numbers – really sharp instrumentation that works equally well with blasting horns or warmer modern soul grooves – almost always topped with lead lyrics in Japanese. Most of their work was only issued overseas, so this collection's a great place to start with their music, especially with Muro in the lead! CD features 25 titles, most listed in Japanese – but with tracks that include "Brand New Honda", "El Diablo", "Midnight Cruiser", "Lady Mustang", and "Punch Punch Punch". (Deep Funk, New Grooves) CD

Gogo PenguinHumdrum Star ... LP
Blue Note, 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $21.99 22.99
There's nothing humdrum about Gogo Penguin at all – as the combo are out to take the sound of the piano trio into their own great directions – really bursting forth here with a sense of energy and imagination that even blow away their previous records! The group is simultaneously concerned with the wider sound of the piano – which occasionally hits waves of sound that almost feel lifted from the post-classical scene, but a lot more dynamic – while the bass and the drums really amplify their role when called up, so that the proceedings are always thrusting forward boldly – in ways that almost remind us of the excellent Indigo Jam Unit from Japan. Titles include "Return To Text", "Transient State", "Bardo", "Strid", "Reactor", "Window", "Prayer", and "A Hundred Moons". (Jazz, New Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

GU (Glenn Underground) & Sean HaleyI-94 (original, GU's Tech Not Dub) ... 12-inch
Noble Square, 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
Glenn Underground pairs up with with fellow top notch Chicago producer Sean Haley! I-94, if you're unfamilar with Chicago, is the main interstate artery through the city – if you wanted to name a quintessential Chicago club groover, you'd be hard pressed to find a more apt title than "I-94" – and this is a jam worthy of both GU's and SH's esteemed reputations. The original version has more swirling atmosphere. While GU's Tech Not Dub is a bit more stripped down. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Hidden OrchestraDawn Chorus (with bonus download) ... LP
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99 21.99
A record with a sound to match its evocative title – maybe the most heady work to date from Hidden Orchestra – and that's saying a lot, given the depth of their other releases! These guys definitely take the "orchestra" in their name seriously – and while the lineup is maybe around a dozen musicians, not a hundred, the sound is very complex, and made up of a shifting array of musical elements – including piano, percussion, guitar, and lots more from leader Joe Acheson – who also uses field recordings and other sonic elements alongside the group's subtle blend of woodwinds, trumpet, and bits of strings. The latter are used very sparingly – so that most of the textures have a more organic sort of quality – and although there are lyrics, the overall sound is the most important thing – almost a 21st Century underground updating of older British lyrical landscape composition – but much hipper overall. Titles include "Long Orchard", "Wingbeats", "East London Street", "Stone", "Serpentine", and "Western Isles". LP, Vinyl record album

Mistura PuraHollywood Spritz (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Ubiquity, 2018. New Copy 2LP ... $15.99 18.98
There's a bit of Hollywood here, but also a fair bit of bossa nova, older jazz, and other modes that remind us a bit of our favorite older records on labels like Schema and Irma – maybe no surprise, given that the whole thing was recorded in Milan! Federica Grappasonni is at the helm – directing the music providing the rhythms and plenty more – but also opening up the door of the studio to bring in some great artists from the contemporary scene – including Jessica Lauren on keyboards, Josh Evans on trumpet, and Lorenzo Tucci on drums! Those more familiar names will give you a good idea of what's going on here – in an all instrumental set that includes the tracks "C'Est De Rhythme", "Nuevo Jungo", "La Sound 1976", "Hollywood Spritz", "Looking For The Angels", "Sunset At Venice Beach", and even a version of the "Charlie's Angels Theme". Forro In The DarkSandcastle ... CD
Nacional, 2017. New Copy ... $6.99 9.99
Forro In The Dark sound better here than ever before – working with producer Kassin, on a set of tracks recorded both in Brooklyn and in Rio – with a vibe that's maybe more faithful to their Brazilian inspiration than any of their previous records! The core trio handle a fantastic amount of percussion, guitar, and reed instruments – with modes that start with the forro of their name, but also branch out into other Brazilian styles – and have some of the captivating qualities of the best independent acts from Brazil in recent years. Kassin plays on most of the record, about half the tracks feature vocals, and titles include "I Wanna Know", "Forro Da Casa Grande", "Ou Sim", "Roca De Pedra", "Craudineia No Forro", "Voce Nao E Insubstituviel", and "Drifting Away". Lack Of AfroJack Of All Trades ... CD
Loa (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $12.99
Warmly soulful work from Lack Of Afro – a name we first knew for more dancefloor-oriented projects, but one that's really evolved into much richer territory in recent years! The album's overflowing with vocal tracks – soulful groovers that lean heavily on styles from the 60s and 70s, but also have some more contemporary club elements too – often handled with a fair bit of live instrumentation, along with all the core elements provided by producer Adam Gibbons! The singers shift on each number, creating a strong sense of variety – with vocals from Nick Corbin, Emma Noble, Elliott Cole, Juliette Ashby, Wax, Alyssa Marie, Ed Martin, and others – on titles that include "Don't Do Me Over", "The Messin Around", "Back In Business", "Home", "Good Love", "Back To The Day", "Baby Be Mine", "Only You & Me", and "Reach Out".
