✨✧ VariousPiece The Next – Japan Breeze – Selected By Hiroko Otsuka ... CD
Key Of Life (Japan), 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An excellent overview of the ways in which the Japanese scene has really changed in recent years – moving past the straighter soul, house, and club jazz of a decade ago – into a range of creative styles that are completely their own! There's definitely a current of jazz that runs through most of this work, but the presentation is very unique overall – groups that change up rhythms in interesting ways, shift the instrumentation and production modes into very groundbreaking territory, and keep pushing the boundaries in the process! There's only one name here we'd heard before – Takuya Kuroda, who gave us records here in the US – but all other artists are new to our ears. Titles include "Porter" by Daiki Tsuneta Millennium Parade, "Spur" by Les Komatis, "Milestones" by Racha Fola, "Bring Me To Having A Curry Rice" by Banda Choro Eletrico, "WTRDR Suite 2 SDOKS" by Osawa Birdwatcherz, "Spank A Lee Jam" by Naked Voice, "The Source" by Satoshi Yoshida, "Green Dolphin Street" by Maya Hatch, and "Waiting In Fain" by Takumi Moriya. Titles include "Dusk" by Werkha with Bryono Jarman-Pinto, "The Truth" by Moonchild, "Oriental Suite" by Anchorsong, "Firefly (Clap Clap rmx)" by Jonny Faith, "Higher (DJ Manny rmx)" by Dizz1 with Frank Nitt, "Holes In The Building" by Rodney P & DJ Die with Indigo Kid, "On The Sly (Jonny Faith rmx)" by Bamboos, "101 Reasons (El Train rmx)" by J Felix, "Patience" by J Felix with Abi Flynn, "Remedy" by Space Captain, "Mmm" by Harleighblu with Dr Zygote, and "What" by Gold Dubs. 35 tracks in all! Atomic Bomb BandAtomic Bomb Band Performing The Music Of William Onyeabor (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Luaka Bop, 2017. New Copy ... $22.99
A really fantastic album that's way better than any other tribute record we've ever heard – even though the whole thing's a tribute to the legendary William Onyeabor! Yet rather than slavishly copying Onyeabor's music, the group here take off in so many new directions – many of them very funky and filled with even more acoustic touches than in the original versions of the songs – including some great sax and trumpet lines that really give the music some depth. The group features a huge array of all-stars – members of LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, Sinkane, and The Beastie Boys – but this also isn't some project where big names are just phoning it in, as there's a very unified vibe that seems to bring out the best in everyone – including folks we might not even like in another context. Jamie Lidell sings on a few cuts, Money Mark plays keyboards on the record, and even the great Charles Lloyd delivers two great tenor solos – on titles that include "Poor Boy", "Love Is Blind", "Fantastic Man", "Good Name", "Heaven & Hell", and "Love Me Now". Fantastic fold-out cover design too! (Global Grooves, New Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

BB Boogie (Daz I Kue)Standing On The Wall ... LP
R2 (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
It's been many years since Daz I Kue first rocked our world with his grooves in Bugz In The Attic – and since that time, he's only gotten stronger and more soulful as a solo act – to the point where a new project like this almost blows away some of his previous work! As you might guess from the cover and name, the project has a very vintage feel – somewhere in the territory of late 70s/early 80s clubby funk, with warmer instrumentation than back in the Bugz days – and a fantastic sense of production that could almost have you playing this set alongside later Funkadelic material, or early work from Prince! Yet there's also a sharpness, too – that new vision of funk that's always made the London scene so wonderful – from the Incognito/Brand New Heavies years onward. Khari Simmons plays bass on most of the record – and the bass is definitely in the lead – and singers include Vanessa Freeman, Greg Blackman, Leroy Burgess, DNS, Monica Blaire, Joy Jones, and others – really helping flesh out the sound on tracks that include "Opposition", "Sweating & Shaking", "Wanna Be With You", "We Can Do It", "Standing On The Wall", "In The Middle", "Let Love Grow", "Stay Woke", and "RAyanne". ✨✧ BosqBosq Y Orquesta De Madera ... LP
Ubiquity, 2013. Near Mint- 2LP ... $14.99
A really wonderful set of grooves – much richer, jazzier, and more soulful than we would have expected – and a great full length introduction to the work of Bosq! Bosq's a name that's been brimming around on singles recently – but on this full album, he really opens up with a wonderfully deep groove – one that's inspired by older styles of jazz, Latin, Brazilian, and even Afro Funk modes – but put together in ways that often mix organic and live instrumentation with some studio production too – yet always at a level that still retains all the warmth of the elements at the core! These are some of the best sounds we've heard from Ubiquity in awhile, and the record's a real return to the mix of classic and contemporary that first made us fall in love with the label. The set features guest work from Kon, Tita Lima, Kaleta, and others – and titles include "More Heavy", "Up & Down (NYC 91 mix)", "Tear It Out", "Getting There", "Movin On", "Pura Candela", "Paciencia De Jo", "Never Feel Cold", and "Get Involved". Break ReformNew Perspectives – A Collection Of Remixes & Unreleased Tracks ... LP
Abstract Blue (UK), 2004. Near Mint- 2LP ... $6.99
Laidback and jazzy wonderfulness – a full album's worth of rare tracks and remixes from the mighty Break Reform! The album pushes the group's already-great groove with a perfect smattering of extra touches – taking their cool breezy keyboards and spacey beats, and working them into a range of grooves that's even more compelling! Plus, the set also features some unreleased tracks that are totally great – every bit as excellent as work from the group's full studio LP – and which add a nice extra level of polish to this great set. Titles include "Ghosts", "Freefall", "Metropolis (Unknown Quantity mix)", "When It Came (Nwachukwu rmx)", "Perfect Season (Break Reform rmx)", "Medusa (Dynamic Syncopation rmx)", "Freefall (Version 2 – bonus mix)", "Metropolis (Solar Apple Quarktette Suadade London Bossa mix)", "What Do You Do (Kamara rmx)", "Lady Sings (D'Nell rmx)", and "Mercy (Ol English rmx)". CotoneteInside Outside – First EP Series Vol 1 ... 12-inch
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2017. New Copy ... $19.99
A jazzy instrumental with a very classic vibe – served up with some especially nice keyboard work from Florian Pellissier – who you might know from records issued under his own name! "Inside Outside" owes a fair bit to 70s funky jazz for inspiration – but it's also got a crackling sort of rhythm approach – played live, but maybe inherited a bit from the broken beat generation – which gives the music an urgently current vibe. Side one features the long core track of the tune – originally written by MPS legend Joanne Grauer – and side two features two Phil Asher/Restless Soul reworks. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Hidden OrchestraDawn Chorus ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A record with a sound to match its evocative title – maybe the most heady work to date from Hidden Orchestra – and that's saying a lot, given the depth of their other releases! These guys definitely take the "orchestra" in their name seriously – and while the lineup is maybe around a dozen musicians, not a hundred, the sound is very complex, and made up of a shifting array of musical elements – including piano, percussion, guitar, and lots more from leader Joe Acheson – who also uses field recordings and other sonic elements alongside the group's subtle blend of woodwinds, trumpet, and bits of strings. The latter are used very sparingly – so that most of the textures have a more organic sort of quality – and although there are lyrics, the overall sound is the most important thing – almost a 21st Century underground updating of older British lyrical landscape composition – but much hipper overall. Titles include "Long Orchard", "Wingbeats", "East London Street", "Stone", "Serpentine", and "Western Isles". CD

JamiroquaiTravelling Without Moving ... CD
Sony, 1996. Used ... $1.99
A mindblower from Jamiroquai – the album that really broke them out of the box, thanks to an increasingly complicated sense of rhythm! For the set, Jay and the group pulled up some of the more dynamic sounds from the London underground, and wove them together with their increasingly great songwriting – coming up with tunes that played beautifully on the dancefloor, yet also offered deeper listening than on previous Jamiroquai efforts! There's still some great 70s elements here, but there's also a more cosmic, righteous vibe too – a hint at spacey London to come, but sent home with a bit more polish here. Titles include "Virtual Insanity", "Cosmic Girl", "Everyday", "Alright", "High Times", "Travelling Without Moving", "Spend A Lifetime", "Use The Force", and "Didjital Vibrations". CD also features the bonus track "Do You Know Where You're Coming From". (Neo Soul, New Grooves) CD

Menson Benson SextetSharpenin The Milestone ... CD
Cosmic Sounds (UK), 2000. Used ... $0.99
Funky jamband grooves from Yugoslavia! The Menson Benson Sextet is a group headed up by tenorist Dusan Petrovic – also in the related group Coxless Pair – and the oddly-named four piece lineup features searing solos by Petrovic, plus work on bass, drums, and turntables, which adds some scratching into an otherwise straight-ahead funky mix of styles. The group feel a bit like one of those New York combos – Soulive or Topaz – mixed with turntablist tricks to give the sound a slightly hip hop groove. Titles include "Jazzy Pressing", "Milestoned", "Prva", "Kolo Techino", and "Afro Punk". CD

Bomb The BassInto The Dragon ... LP
Rhythm King (UK), 1988. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Late 80s club funk from Tim Simonen, aka Bomb The Bass – big, thumping sample based DJ funk from the UK producer behind busy club hits by his own Bomb The Bass and a few international megahits by others like Seal & Nenah Cherry. Into The Dragon features the nonstop sample funk approach that was really breaking out in the late 80s, with some Bomb Squad influences in the mix for sure, which is a trait we're not likely to ever complain about, and a straight up thumping good time. Includes "Beat Dis" (US 7" mix), "Megablast Rap" (version) feat Merlin, "Dynamite Beats", "Shake It", "Hey You!" feat Aurra, "Say AL Little Prayer" feat Maureen, "Beat Dat" (freestyle scratch mix) and more, plus 4 bonus remixes. Deantoni ParksTechnoself ... LP
Leaving, 2015. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A stunner from drummer and all around atmospheric beats master Deantoni Parks – who has worked as a drummer for a very impressive list of stars (none of whom we'll name here, because Deantoni gets all the props from us) – but left to his own creative devices, he's crafted one of best beathead instrumental efforts from the Stones Throw/Leaving Records universe in years! First and foremost, the man is an incredible drummer. His drums are performed and produced live – without overdubs or loops – but armed with a sampler, he curates and assembles the battery of propellant beats in infinitely expressive ways. Fellow creative spirit Carlos Nino has a hand in the sequence of excerpted beats here – and the record is a real knockout! Titles include "Black Axioms", "Our Shadows", "Down", "Graphite", "Ashes", "Methodist", "Pebble", ""Bombay", "Orbit Maximus" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Nacional, 2017. New Copy ... $9.99
Forro In The Dark sound better here than ever before – working with producer Kassin, on a set of tracks recorded both in Brooklyn and in Rio – with a vibe that's maybe more faithful to their Brazilian inspiration than any of their previous records! The core trio handle a fantastic amount of percussion, guitar, and reed instruments – with modes that start with the forro of their name, but also branch out into other Brazilian styles – and have some of the captivating qualities of the best independent acts from Brazil in recent years. Kassin plays on most of the record, about half the tracks feature vocals, and titles include "I Wanna Know", "Forro Da Casa Grande", "Ou Sim", "Roca De Pedra", "Craudineia No Forro", "Voce Nao E Insubstituviel", and "Drifting Away".
