Comet Is ComingTrust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery ... CD
Impulse, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". (Jazz, New Grooves) CD

FlevansPart Time Millionaire ... LP
Jalapeno (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $8.99
We first loved Flevans for his albums on the Tru Thoughts label in the first decade of this century – and after a long hiatus, the man is back in action – and somehow sounding funkier than ever! Most of the work here is handled by Flevans/Nigel Evans – but there's a fullness to the whole thing that almost makes you feel like there's a whole funky combo at play – a bit like some of the funk projects we've enjoyed from Shawn Lee – and some of the best cuts here have really strong vocals in the lead, enforcing more of a soul vibe than we remember from the previous albums. Singers include Laura Vane, Sarah Scott, and Elliott Cole – and titles include "Invisible", "It Just Goes", "Who's Got Me", "Right On Top", "Ex Factor", "The Wheel", "Some Day", "Take Your Money", and "Two Steps". Herb AlpertHerb Alpert Reimagines The Tijuana Brass Music Vol 3 ... CD
Herb Alpert, 2018. New Copy ... $7.99 13.99
Herb Alpert remakes himself again – taking all the best tunes from his classic years on A&M records, then fitting them to contemporary grooves – all at a level that's a bit like some of the Verve Remixed projects from years back, but even better! These aren't remixes, but new versions – as Herb blows strong trumpet lines over the top of beats, keyboards, and other contemporary elements – all while keeping that Tijuana Brass punch in his horn, on versions of "Whipped Cream", "Spanish Flea/Rise", "The Lonely Bull", "El Presidente", "Spanish Harlem", "Green Peppers", "A Taste Of Honey", and "Bittersweet Samba". BamboosBy Special Arrangement ... CD
BMG (Australia), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
The Bamboos really take the "special arrangement" here seriously – as the record has the group moving way past their funk combo roots, to work in a set of large orchestral arrangements that really transform their sound! If anything, the record's a lot more soulful than recent releases – as the larger charts are used to flesh out the vocals in this wonderful way – evoking the complexity of classic soul recordings on Atlantic and Chess by the likes of Arif Mardin or Charles Stepney – while also keeping things fresh and contemporary, partly thanks to a range of singers who include the group's frequent partner Kylie Auldist, plus Dan Sultan, Washington, and Tim Rogers. Ross Irwin arranged the whole thing – and is clearly a key force in the group's sound here – and titles are a mix of covers and remakes of older Bamboos classics – titles that include "The Truth", "Keep Me In Mind", "I Got Burned", "I Don't Wanna Stop", "Stranded", "Strong", and "Eliza". ✨✧ BlazeNatural Blaze ... CD
Life Line (UK), 2001. Used ... $4.99
Brilliant work from Blaze – one of the greatest groups ever in house music, never failing to please at any point in their rich 15 year history! This set has the group a long way from their New Jersey roots – grooving hard in a London mode, with strong elements of spacey soul layered out over some very well conceived house tracks. As usual, Blaze are far more soulful than most of their contemporaries – and in this set, they've gone way past the usual batch of dancefloor tunes, to create a richly varied set of tracks that sparkles like a classic soul album! Titles include "Time For Love", "The Grooves", "Better Days", "Afro Groove", "Lovely Ones", "Revolution Poem", and "Elevation". CD

Chicago Afrobeat Project feat Tony Allen & OthersWhat Goes Up – Remixed ... LP
Future Rootz, 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
A great criss-crossing of sounds and styles – one that brings together African roots, contemporary funk, and a great array of dancefloor modes served up by the various producers on the project! The record reminds us a lot of some of our favorite French work in this mode from the start of the century – particularly the Africanism series – and as with some of those records, legendary drummer Tony Allen is on hand, lending his strong arm on the kit to the grooves of the Chicago Afrobeat Project! Most tracks are nice and long – which makes the album like getting a whole stack of 12" singles – and titles include "Cut The Infection (Sol Power all stars rmx)", "I No Know (Jose Marquez Afro-House no go die rmx)", "Afro Party (Ron Trent dub)", "No Bad News (Maga Bo rmx)", "Sunday Song (Afroqbano rmx)", "White Rhino (Sound Culture rmx)", and "Afro Party (Kevin Ford rmx)". A nicely bubbling, languorous club jam from Coflo & Lady C! "Easy" as an easily gliding tempo with uncommonly strong touches – from the breezily soulful vocals, to the Rhodes grooving in the mix to searing electric guitar in the mix. Includes the vocal & instrumental. 12-inch, Vinyl record

BlockheadInterludes After Midnight ... LP
Ninja Tune, 2012. Very Good+ 2LP ... $16.99
Nocturnal boombap from Blockhead – a sleepless, samples and electic-beats heavy survey of an after hours metropolis – finding Blockhead as insistently inventive and timeless in approach as ever! We love that Blockhead's work kind of exists in it's own world, yet clearly shows love for NYC life – and the globally diverse soundscapes strongly represent both that great urban landscape and Blockheads inner genius. Includes "Never Forget Your Token", "Creeps Crouchin", "Panic In Funkytown", "Meet You At Tower Records", "Escape The Meadow", "Smoke Signals", "Midnight Blue", "Snapping Point", "Beyond Reach" feat Baby Dayliner and "The Robin Byrd Era". BosqLove & Resistance (with download) ... LP
Ubiquity, 2018. New Copy 2LP ... $15.99 19.98
Maybe the strongest album so far from Bosq – and certainly one of the most wide-ranging too – given that the group have a strong global bent to their groove, and they've also made space for a host of guest stars who include Nicole Willis, Bruno Morais, Monolog, and Kaleta! The music is every bit as funky as before, but there's also a nice criss-crossing of elements from Brazilian music, Afro Funk, and even a bit of contemporary house – served up with just the right sort of variety to match the moods of the guest stars. It's great to hear Nicole Willis on the clubby tracks "Take Me There" and "Tonight" – and other titles include "Feel It", "Can't Seem To Hide", "Com Force", "Alode", "In Orbit", "The Love", and "Pegate Pa Ca". Chris BowdenTime Capsule ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1996. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
An underground classic from the London scene – a record that was hugely important to us in the early days of Dusty Groove, and which is still completely tremendous all these many years later! At the time, the album was the sort of ambitious undertaking that nobody else would have done – pre-Cinematic Orchestra, pre-Nostalgia 77, pre-any of those other groups that were inspired by vintage soundtracks, David Axelrod, and all sorts of higher ideas in groovy music! Chris Bowden is a saxophonist at the core – and a jazz-based one too – but he works here with these incredible arrangements of his own creation, folding in both funky and fulfilling elements – heavy drums, percussion, and keyboards – but also some great string passages, and even surprisingly strong use of clarinet at times – creating these snakey elements that offset his own soulful lead. The album was a landmark at the time – even if it was missed by most of the planet – and it's still tremendously powerful throughout – with titles that include "Forbidden Fruit", "Natural Selection", "Deaf Out", "Telescopic Three", "Sane", "Angel Falls", "Solo", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Epsilon", and "Time Capsule". Nicola ConteOther Directions ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2004. New Copy 2LP ... $19.99
Incredible work from Nicola Conte – Schema records maestro making his Blue Note debut with this set – and giving the label one of their best new albums of the 21st Century! The record's quite different than Nicola's programmed dancefloor work for Schema – and is much more of an organic jazz-based session – with instrumentation by a wide arrangement of hip European jazzers (including Till Bronner and Rosario Giuliani!), plus sweet vocals from a variety of different singers! The groove is still very much in the Conte/Schema spirit – often in a loping modal approach to jazz, with a strong inspiration from the best European scenes of the late 60s and early 70s. The sound is wonderful – with players from the larger lineup playing in differing groups from track to track – showcasing instrumentation that includes vibes, flute, trombone, tenor, alto, and even a bit of guitar from Nicola himself. Vocalists include Bembe Segue, Lucia Minetti, Cristina Zavalloni, and Till Bronner – and titles include "Sea & Sand", "Nefertiti", "Wanin Moon", "A Time For Spring", "Kind Of Sunshine", "Aphrodite's Dream", "The Dharma Bums", "All Gone", "Le Depart", and "Several Shades Of Dawn". Imagine the best work of Schema or Compost done in an all-organic, all-natural mode – and you've got the beautiful sound of this set! LP, Vinyl record album
(Very unique package, too – like getting 2 classic Blue Note albums together at once!)

Giovanni DamicoBoogie Tracks ... LP
Star Creature, 2019. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A sweet set of largely instrumental Italo electro funk and spacey 80s synth soul inspired grooves from Giovanni Damico! Giovanni delivers what's really becoming a something of a signature Star Creature sound – a deep love for the 80s era synth and drum programming, but strongly resonant of post-millennium modern funk – with a lot of other diverse touches layered in, including occasional vocoder and vocals, more insistent, old school hip hop inspired drum programming and more. Titles Includes "Spazio E Tempo", " "Boogie Erogeno", "Bday Mood", "Puma Beat", "Rize Up", "The G-Sound", "New Directions" and "Stream Of Souls". LP, Vinyl record album

Soulful dancefloor grooves from Daz-I-Kue of Bugz In The Attic – featuring vocals that really kick the tracks to a deeper level! The "Move" tracks feature lovely soul vocals and a splintering, thumpting sound. "Reboot" heaves in some extra bass bounce. DegoToo Much ... LP
2000 Black (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
A fantastic full length set from Dego – one of the few members of the 4Hero scene who've kept the music flowing and growing into new territory in recent years – especially with the same longform vibe that we always loved from that legendary group! Although short doses of cosmic sound can be great, there's nothing to compare with a full dose like this – a rich musical vision that holds us rapt throughout, as it moves through shifting rhythms and different modes of contemporary soul – thanks in part to vocal guests who include Ivana Santilli, Samii, Lady Alma, Sharlene Hector, and Sarina Leah! A few tracks have bold, long instrumental workouts – blinding keyboards and quick-changing rhythms – and titles include "A Strong Move For Truth", "My Standards Are Not Too High", "A Where Pringle Deh", "Come Of Age", "Just Leave It", "Life Can Be Unreal", "You Are Virgo", "Remini Dream", "I Don't Wanna Know", "Good Morning", and "Unknown Faults". Freestyle (UK), 2018. Used ... $8.99
Lance Ferguson has given us plenty of great work over the years – from his work in The Bamboos, to all his many other projects – yet as much as we've liked all of those, this one might actually be one of his best – a fantastic reworking of rare groove tracks from the 70s, all with a nicely changed-up sense of instrumentation! The set's mostly instrumental, and Lance takes on tracks originally recorded by James Mason, Pleasure, Funk Inc, and other names who are big heavyweights 'round these parts – served up with very strong instrumentation by a combo that includes members of The Bamboos, Hiatus Kaiyote, and The Putbacks. Titles include "Sweet Power Your Embrace", "Goodbye So Long", "Joyous", "Egg Roll", "Brazilian Rhyme", "Am I Wrong", "A Love I Believe In", "Noches De Viaje", "The Panther", and "Smokey Joe's La La". Ubiquity, 2005. Sealed 2LP ... $9.99
A heavily jamming set from John Arnold – a set that's overflowing with Detroit influences old and new, and which features a range of guest stars that include Ty, Paul Randolph, and Tribe Records legend Wendell Harrison! Arnold's groove is strongly straightforward on the record – broken at the bottom, but pulsing with a rhythmic intensity that also shares a lot with hip hop production, especially some of the more cosmically tuned artists from the recent Detroit generation. There's nary a dull moment in the set, and the whole thing bristles with electricity from start to finish – over tracks that include "Style & Pattern (nuff version)", "Jangal", "La Cocina", "Cabin Fever", "1234", "Suppadupe", "Geminade", and "Show Your Love". An overlooked mid 90s set from The Brand New Heavies – not as hitbound as some of their earlier work, but still plenty darn great – recorded with a strong emphasis on the vocals, and a no-nonsense soul sound that's always refreshing! There's one or two instrumentals on the album, but most of the tracks are vocal numbers in an R&B mode – yet still with plenty of the best old school touches we expect from The Heavies, and an overall sound that's quite different than most of their contemporaries. Titles include "I Like It", "Shelter", "Feels Like Right", "Day By Day", "Once Is Twice Enough", "You Can Do It", "Stay Gone", "After Forever", "Last To Know", and "Highest High". CorduroyReturn Of The Fabric Four ... CD
Acid Jazz (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $16.99
The long-overdue return of Corduroy – a fab funky combo that we first fell in love with at the start of the 90s – when their mix of deep grooves and shifting styles was one of the most compelling to come from London's acid jazz scene of the time! For this return, the group are very much in a back-to-basics form – working as a strong instrumental quartet with a rich devotion to classic jazz funk modes – plenty of organ and guitar lines, set to rhythms that run the spectrum from heavy funk to soulful bossa – sometimes given a slight cinematic twist, as you might guess from the cover. The whole thing actually reminds us of the first few records by their contemporaries – The James Taylor Quartet – and titles include "Sambarella", "Snake Appeal", "Saturday Club", "The Slingbacks Solution", "Jumping Spider", "Botany Five O", and "The Cleaner". A beautiful second volume in the Heritage series from keyboard genius Mark De Clive Lowe – and one that we like even more than the first! The music here has the strong spiritual currents of the previous set, but also brings in more of the cosmic, electronic modes that we knew in Mark's initial music – a great blend of jazz with inventive rhythms, wide-ranging keyboard sounds, and even some live electronics – recorded in concert, but with the complexity of a more dynamic studio production! Other players include Teodross Avery on tenor, Josh Johnson on alto, Carlos Nino on percussion, Brando Eugene Owens on bass, and Brandon Combs on drums – and titles include "Isan", "Ryugu Jo", "Bushido II", "Mizugaki", "Mirai No Rekishi", and "O Edo Nihonbashi".
