Comet Is ComingTrust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery ... CD
Impulse, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". (Jazz, New Grooves) CD

Dining RoomsArt Is A Cat ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2020. New Copy ... $18.99
Maybe the best album we've ever heard from Dining Rooms – a set that has the group moving way past just makers of seductive grooves, into wider, fuller territory that definitely puts them at the top shelf level we love from the best at Schema Records! The album balances some of their earlier modes with really strong songs that feature a variety of different singers – including Sean Martin, Beatrice Velasco Moreno, and Georgeanne Kalweit – who each give the record a lot more lyrical power than before, and a strong presence on the vocal tracks that makes instrumental moments feel like well-placed interludes. Titles include "When You Died", "Little Girl", "Art Is A Cat", "Carpet Of Green", "Nella Sua Loca Realta", "Ghosts", "Two Thousand Parts", "No Frame", "Teach Me To Dance", and "Astratto". CD

✨✧ Kahil El'Zabar with Nona HendryxIt's Time ... CD
Katalyst, 2011. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the most soulful sessions we've ever heard from the legendary Kahil El'Zabar – and that's saying a lot, given all of his experiments to mix jazz and club music over the years! This set's his first outing with his Ethnics group – a wonderful combo that's a lot more jazz-based than some of Kahil's other crossover projects – and one that features some especially great vocals from Nona Hendryx, sounding better here than we've heard in years! Kahil's percussion leads the grooves on most tracks, but there's also some rhythm patterns too, and keyboards from Shannon Harris, of Urbancity fame – as well as additional keyboards from Robert Irving III, trumpet from Corey Wilkes, and tenor from Kevin Nabors. Somehow, though, there's still a core acoustic vibe that really holds strong, and keeps the perfect backdrop for Nona's bold vocals – on titles that include "Giant Steps", "Paradise", "I Follow The Sun", "Love Is A Flame", "It's Time", and "Dance In The Spirit". Alessandro AlessandroniAfro Discoteca Reworked EP ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1978/2020. New Copy ... $13.99
Four fantastic tracks from the Afro Discoteca record by sound library genius Alesseandro Alessandroni – all reworked in contemporary versions, yet in a way that never loses the funky charm of the originals! There's a real respect for classic styles going on here – partly because the choice of remixers is so strong, the project features just the right sort of artists to keep things right, while still also adding in their own contributions too – maybe some extra keyboards or subtle electronic elements that never get in the way of the original tribal disco inspiration! Titles include "Afro Voodoo (Bovisa rmx with Calibro 35)", "Afro Darkness (Pad rmx)", "Afro Discoteca (Jolly Mare lifting)", and "Afro Darkness (LUCA quirky version)". Calibro 35Momentum ... CD
Record Kicks (Italy), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Calibro 35 have certainly gained momentum in our book – as the group's given us more than a few albums over the years, and just keep sounding better and better with each new one! This set has the group still strongly in their core territory of Italian soundtrack and sound library funk – but they're also pushing the sound with some flavors that are very much their own – newer rhythmic and instrumental modes that fold nicely with the older-style elements, and really help keep the whole thing from just sounding like a retro-inspired set of funk! There's lots of cool sonic textures and colors throughout – and titles include "Stan Lee", "Black Moon", "Tom Down", "Automata", "4 x 4", "Glory Fake Nation", "Death Of Storytelling", and "One Nation Under A Format". Calibro 35Calibro 35 ... LP
Cinedelic/Record Kicks (Italy), 2008. New Copy ... About October 2, 2020
A contemporary combo, but one who really get the sound of older soundtracks right – particularly the late 60s/early 70s Italian generation that's inspired the name and artwork of this set! Instrumentation is nice and lean – keyboards, guitar, bass, and percussion – used more in the tight ways of a mod funk combo, but with strong soundtrack leanings in the tunes – no surprise, as the songs here are all pulled from vintage scores by Ennio Morricone, Luiz Bacalov, Armando Trovajoli, and others of the golden age of Italian soundtracks! And if you're suspicious about the sound, don't be – because these guys are totally great – no fake-retro moments, or overly programmed rhythms – just live instrumentation handled beautifully, in ways that bring something new to the tunes, but remain very faithful to their original inspiration. Titles include "Preludio", "Italia Amano Armata", "Titoli", "Notte In Bovisa", "Summertime Killer", "La Polizia S'Incazza", "Shake Balera", "Spiralys", and "Gangster Story". LP, Vinyl record album

Calibro 35Ritornano Quelli Di Calibro 35 ... LP
Record Kicks (Italy), 2010. New Copy ... About November 6, 2020
Classic-styled soundtrack funk from Calibro 35 – a contemporary group, but one who works in the best styles of the Italian scene of the 70s! This album's Calibro's heaviest work to date – a set that's got even more funky rhythms than before, and plenty of darkly brooding basslines, fuzzy guitar bits, and choppy keyboards that really help maintain a rhythmic pulse to the whole record – keeping things strongly in a space between the late 60s mod moments of Trovajoli and Piccioni, and the fuzzier freakouts of the Goblin generation! Titles include "Five Dolls For An August Moon", "Calling All Units To Broccolino", "Talk Is Cheap", "Eurocrime", "Death Comes At Midnight", "Fair Sex & Merciless Crimes", "Hired To Kill", and "A Fistful Of Lead". Bryan CorbettPressure Valve ... CD
Woodland (UK), 2005. Used ... $7.99
Fender Rhodes, funky flute, and soulful trumpet – topped off by great vocals on most tracks, and wrapped up in a really classic production style! Bryan Corbett's a perfect labelmate to Woodland's Perry Hemus – and like Hemus, he's working here in a modern update of older Fender Rhodes-driven grooves – a style that builds off of older electric jazz of the 70s, but pushes the work a bit more strongly into the territory of recent London soul! Corbett plays trumpet, Rhodes, and flute throughout – and most tracks feature vocals by singers Lupa, Lizzy Parks, or Sophie Perks – all of whom match the Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis inspired soul of the set pretty nicely. Titles include "Corbenova", "Off The Rails (Woodland mix)", "Deja Vu", "Movin In", "Metamorphik", "Nardo", "Tokyology", and "Roma". CD

✨✧ Mario BiondiChange Of Scenes (Remixes & Unreleased Tracks) ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2011. Used ... $16.99
Breezy, jazzy alternate versions and some strong unreleased tracks from Italian vocalist Mario Biondi – great stuff that offers a fresh take on material from the landmark A Handful Of Soul album and more! Biondi's A Handful Of Soul brilliantly got the ball for Biondi, who's now a bonafide major Italian star, and with good reason. His raspy voice exudes warmth and soulfulness in a way that brings to mind some the most charismatic singers of the past few decades in both jazz and soul, but with a breezy jazzy charm to the arrangements that's the perfect foil! Change Of Seasons doesn't skew away from any of those strengths with the re-worked numbers, just offers a fresh perspective, and the couple of previously unheard numbers are great, too. "A Handful Of Soul (Takin' The Live Mood)", "I'm Her Daddy (Daddy's Point Of View Version)", "This Is What You Are (The Brazilian Rime)", "Slow Hot Wind (Slow Hot Version)", "This Is What You Are (Dim's Hipster Jazz Version by Dimitri From Paris)", "But Not For You (Vocal Demo Version)" and more. ✨✧ Black & BrownCool Affair ... CD
Irma (Italy), 2000. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A nice little record from one of Irma's first big acid jazz groups! Black & Brown have a strong smooth jazz funk style, with some touches of the 70s work on labels like Kudu or CTI, plus bits of 90s production. There's a guitar player in the lead, and he's got a nice sound that's a bit Wes Montgomery, a bit Ronnie Jordan, and always nice and soulful. Titles include "Cool Affair", "Hip-Not", "Blue Train", "Take This Mine", "Liquid Files", and "Still Under Funk". CD

Ninja Tune (UK), 2012. Used ... $2.99
Nocturnal boombap from Blockhead – a sleepless, samples and electic-beats heavy survey of an after hours metropolis – finding Blockhead as insistently inventive and timeless in approach as ever! We love that Blockhead's work kind of exists in it's own world, yet clearly shows love for NYC life – and the globally diverse soundscapes strongly represent both that great urban landscape and Blockheads inner genius. Includes "Never Forget Your Token", "Creeps Crouchin", "Panic In Funkytown", "Meet You At Tower Records", "Escape The Meadow", "Smoke Signals", "Midnight Blue", "Snapping Point", "Beyond Reach" feat Baby Dayliner and "The Robin Byrd Era". Mari BoineEight Seasons ... CD
Jazzland/Northside, 2002. Used ... $6.99
The lovely vocals of Mari Boine are paired with the far-thinking production work of Bugge Wesseltoft, who also plays keyboards on the set. Bugge's presence makes for an album that's quite different than some of Mari's earlier work – a bit starker, and with less of the easy world production that's always kept us from enjoying her fully. That's not to say that the charms of earlier records are gone, or that the album's an all-out electronic affair that resembles Wesseltoft's own work – just to say that it's a strong blending of cultures with a really unique sound. Titles include "Liegga Gokcas", "Guovssahasaid Ajagattis", "Song For The Unborn", "Boadan Nuppi Bealde", and "Sarakha Vina". CD

BrownoutOozy ... CD
Nat Geo, 2012. Used ... $6.99
Massively heavy funk from Brownout – and a set that may well be their greatest so far! We weren't sure what to expect when the group hit the Nat Geo label – but honestly, they seem like they're even rawer and rootsier than before – really serving up a brilliant blend of funk and border rhythms – produced to perfection by the trio of bandmates Adrian Quesada, Greg Gonzalez, and Beto Martinez! Tracks are heavy on percussion and guitars – but are topped with jazzy flourishes on trumpet and trombone too – and there's definitely a strong echo of grooves from East LA and the Texas funk scene from decades back. Titles include "Ando Y Dando", "Flaximus", "Stormy Weather", "Meter Beater", "What You Did", "Rub A Dub", and "Poor You". (Deep Funk, New Grooves) CD

DegoToo Much ... LP
2000 Black (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
A fantastic full length set from Dego – one of the few members of the 4Hero scene who've kept the music flowing and growing into new territory in recent years – especially with the same longform vibe that we always loved from that legendary group! Although short doses of cosmic sound can be great, there's nothing to compare with a full dose like this – a rich musical vision that holds us rapt throughout, as it moves through shifting rhythms and different modes of contemporary soul – thanks in part to vocal guests who include Ivana Santilli, Samii, Lady Alma, Sharlene Hector, and Sarina Leah! A few tracks have bold, long instrumental workouts – blinding keyboards and quick-changing rhythms – and titles include "A Strong Move For Truth", "My Standards Are Not Too High", "A Where Pringle Deh", "Come Of Age", "Just Leave It", "Life Can Be Unreal", "You Are Virgo", "Remini Dream", "I Don't Wanna Know", "Good Morning", and "Unknown Faults". DeyampertShapes & Colors ... CD
Sonar Kollektiv (Germany), 2003. Used ... $6.99
A monumental debut from Giles Deyampert – sure to be a key player in the sound of 21st Century Soul, and an artist with a sound that's as great as 4 Hero, Koop, Ursula Rucker, or any other artists of that elite rank! Like those we dare mention in the same breath, Deyampert has a great talent for mixing together acoustic jazz and cosmic electronics – soaring to the skies on wings of spiritual soul, and hitting a groove that's as appealing to our ears for the classic as it is our ears for the future! The album features some great work from guest singers that include Heather Clayton, Channeng Payton, Jane Hamilton, Desney Bailey, and Rachel Myers – and there's some wonderful tunes on here we know we'll still be grooving strongly in years to come! Titles include "I Want You To Know Me", "Release", "Santiago Sands (studio)", "Release", "The Sweetest Delusion", "Scorned & Maladjusted", "Song For Kailen", and "Held Him First". Marco Di Marco with Nathan HainesMy London Friends ... CD
Arision (UK), 2004. Used ... $8.99
An incredible meeting of minds and generations – as 70s Italian jazz legend Marco Di Marco joins forces with current underground London darling Nathan Haines! Haines' work of recent years is steeped in a soul jazz groove inspired by the European scene of the 70s – of which Marco's famous trio was a very big part – so the meeting of the two players is almost a match made in heaven. The set's a straight jazz one, but it's also handled with the love of rhythmic freedom that marks some of the best London work of the 21st century – almost a 4 Hero inspiration bubbling at the bottom, as tracks take off and glisten with a richly driving sound. Marco's piano is as wonderfully lyrical as ever – evocative, but never snoozy or too painterly to lose its swing – and Nathan Haines really shocks us with his full command of sax and flute in a jazz-based mode! The set also features some rollingly strong electric and double bass work by Andy Hamill and Robin Mullarkey, drums by Eduardo Marquez, and percussion by Pete Eckford – and titles include "Interlude At Dawn", "Brazilian Waltz", "Up West", "Repeat After Me", "Solaria", "Take Off", "Jumpy","Winding Dance", "Soft Rain, Gentle Breeze", and more. DissentDissent ... CD
Wide Hive, 2001. Used ... $4.99
A pretty sweet set of funky grooves and programmed beats – played by a group that contains both old and new players, armed with a variety of skills! The older end of funk is represented by guitarist Calvin Keys, of Black Jazz Records fame, and drummer Ron E Beck, who's recorded with Tower Of Power – and the newer end of the funk spectrum is filled by the keyboardist, sax player, vocalist, and bassist in the group. The tracks have a good mixture of 70s soundtrack funk with touches of 90s sample/beat culture – and there's plenty of warm soulful moments, and strong jazzy playing, both of which make for a real album of grooves that goes way beyond a simple postmodern pastiche of tricks. Titles include "Apollo", "Thoughts On Freedom", "So Damn Phisticated", "Sound Is God", "Corporate Voodoo", and "Bringing It On". Think Poets of Rhythm without the pot smoke, and you'll get a decent idea of the sound. CD

Gerardo FrisinaAd Lib ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2001. Used ... $6.99
A sublime winner from Schema! Gerardo Frisina is the force behind some of Schema's greatest reissue projects – like the jazz classics on the Rearward label, or compilations like Metti Una Bossa A Cena – but here, he emerges as a strong new artist on his own, serving up a brilliant batch of Latin-tinged jazz tracks that fit the Schema sound perfectly! Like work by Nicola Conte, the owner of Schema, Ad Lib stays very close to a classic style – but also works in a mode of samples, loops, and soundscapes that are completely informed by modern modes of production. The result is an album that's at once immediately fresh, and classic sounding – and which we predict will be on your stereo constantly after you first give it a listen! Titles include "Chirpy", "Captivation", "The Tallest Tree", "Mas Eu Quer Ser", "Slow Burning", "Brascubas", and "Fiera". CD

Gerardo FrisinaHi Note ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2003. New Copy 2LP ... $21.99
Hi Note, indeed! Gerardo Frisina's latest is awe-inspiring – a completely seamless blend of Italian and Latin jazz, bossa rhythms and percussion, and some of the most tasteful and naturally blended electronic elements you could ever expect to hear on an album so steeped in a genuine affinity for live jazz instrumentation! If memory serves, earlier Frisina recordings relied a bit more on the production side of the coin, but this one's so strong on great instrumentation we're rendered pretty close to speechless. Lots of great horn arrangements, rolling bass lines and piano, sublime vibes and driving drums and percussion. Totally sweet throughout – this is way up there with the best dancefloor jazz Schema's ever released! Tracks include "Inviolatin", "Joyas", "Bluesanova", "Beyond The Moon", "Ombroso", "Sophisticated Samba" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Gerardo FrisinaRhythmic Conversations ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2018. New Copy ... $19.99
Some of the rootsiest work we've heard in years from the mighty Gerardo Frisina – a set that still has his rhythm programs in the mix, but combined with loads of acoustic drums, percussion, piano and vibes – all given some sweet touches by occasional Fender Rhodes solos as well! The whole thing's like a stripped-down take not just on Frisina's style, but maybe also the full sound of Schema Records too – as most material is still clubby, but has a strong live jazz component – and a few cuts even feature a bit of trumpet too. Titles include "Arawak", "Katanga", "Camaguey", "Yeha", "Yapatera", and "Camaguey (tumbao)". LP, Vinyl record album

Andy Hamill & OthersBee For Bass ... CD
Emu (UK), 2003. Used ... $1.99
A beautiful little album – filled with jazz, soul, and a sense of collaboration that's extremely unique! Andy Hammill's a bassist on the British scene, and has played on a range of some of the hippest sessions in London during the past few years. For the set, he gathered together a host of famous friends – including Omar, Valerie Etienne, Carleen Anderson, Mark Murphy, Chris Bowden, and Ursula Rucker – all to provide vocals and instrumentation for a wonderful set of tracks that skips across genres as easily and fluidly as Andy's fingers skip across the strings of the bass! Andy's strong work on acoustic bass is at the core of the set, but the added guests really flesh out the sound a lot – taking the personal and mellow tunes, and opening them up tremendously. Jazz is at the core of the session, but there's also a folsky warm that touches each tune – not to mention the soulful side of the vocals by all the great singers on the set! Titles include "The Planet Formerly Known As The Moon", "Mothers & Daughters Now Mothers", "Why Do You Cry?", "Getting On", "Camel's Back", "Dear Love", "Catch", and "Sally Tomato". CD

CeuApka ... CD
Six Degrees, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Ceu seems to be an even stronger singer here than before – still able to drift in and out of an easygoing rhythm when she wants, but also more suited to take on tunes with a more soulful vibe – which includes a number of standout tunes that really make the record shine! There's still some of the nods towards older Brazilian styles that graced Ceu's earlier albums, but many of the numbers here sparkle with a more contemporary vibe – never overdone, but a nice blend of subtle rhythms and guitar lines from Pedro Sa – mostly moving at a midtempo pace that's just right for the vocals. Marc Ribot plays guitar on a few tracks, Seu Jorge guests on another, and titles include "Nada Irreal", "Coreto", "Forcar O Verao", "Corpocontinente", "Off", "Fenix Do Amor", and "Ocitocina".
