MoonchildReflections ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2023. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Maybe the coolest record we've ever heard from Moonchild – a set that's an all-acoustic outing, and one that offers up fresh takes on some of their older tunes – in ways that are maybe even more soulful and stunning than before! The instrumentation often includes some great work on reeds, especially flute – and the vocals of Amber Navran have this way of folding together with the grooves, which are also more seductive, through the live interplay of bass, drums, and percussion. The only electric element at times is a bit of Fender Rhodes – which we can hardly argue with – and the performances are all live, on titles that include "Back To Me", "The List", "Cure", "Run Away", "Money", and "The Truth". Nostalgia 77Everything Under The Sun ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2007. Used ... $3.99
Man, these guys keep blowing our minds again and again with each new album – stretching out even farther than before, yet still hanging on to all the best elements of their sound! This time around, Nostalgia 77 still have the bolder jazz style forged on their previous experimental recordings – but the groove is a lot more focused and dynamic – soaring out with the depth of a spiritual soul jazz session from the 70s – and often topped by some great vocals from Lizzy Parks, a wonderful singer with qualities that remind us of Dee Dee Bridgewater or Jean Carn back in their earliest days! The bass is right up front on most tracks – giving the tunes a darkly pulsating feel – and the instrumentation is mostly acoustic, and certainly spontaneous – a very welcome change from some of the stiffer, colder modes of the downtempo generation! Titles include "Quiet Dawn", "Arora", "Wildflower", "Stop To Make A Change", "Dreamers Dance", and "Little Steps". CD

✨✧ Nostalgia 77 OctetImpossible Equation EP ... LP
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2006. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A free jazz jam from the Nostalgia 77 Octet – easily their most far-reaching work to date, and only available on a limited edition vinyl EP! "The Impossible Equation" has the group stretching out in a side-long jam of space jazz proportions – building very slowly with a style that's even more sonically focused than their previous efforts – sounding nicely tripped up, but still a bit funky at the bottom, thanks to a bassline that steps strongly along underneath some of the more psychedelic solos! Instrumentation is mostly acoustic, as with other Octet records – but the production makes for some especially spacey sounds. The flipside features a great version of "Desert Fairy Princess" – done in a really righteous 70s soul jazz mode – plus the shorter "Well Being I", which is a bit outside! LP, Vinyl record album
(Still in the stickered sleeve, lightly bent at the side.)

✨✧ QuanticFifth Exotic ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
Wonderfully beat-heavy work by Quantic – a wicked mix of classic elements and lots of funky roots – but served up in a leaner, cleaner style overall! The approach is a bit more produced than the live work of Quantic – almost in the early Ninja Tune mode – mixing together spare elements of funky tunes with a slightly abstract edge. But the set's also got a life of its own, as some of the tracks have the group taking off a bit more, and showing they've got a more soulful side to express. Titles include "Common Knowledge", "The 5th Exotic", "Infinite Regression", "Life In The Rain", "Long Road Ahead", "Meaning", "In The Key Of Blue", and "Time Is The Enemy". (Deep Funk, New Grooves) CD

✨✧ VariousShapes 2007 ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
Jazzy soul and spacey modern grooves from the ever impressive Tru Thoughts/Zebra Traffic roster – a selection of the best and brightest tunes circa 2007 – at an incredible price! The Shapes for '07 are steeped pretty heavily in a bubbling leftfield club soul mode – but the off kilter funk, loosely hip hop driven beats, and and even a touch of Latin groove are represented, too – all of if extremely tuneful and well worth checking out! Titles include "Hurry On Now (Boub Remix)" by Alice Russell, "Good Things" by Spengler, "Pushing On" by Freddie Cruger feat Lin, "Compatible" by Up Hygh, "Skin (Remix)" by TM Juke feat Rup, "Politick Society (Quantic Remix)" by Quantic feat Noelle, "Waiting For Your Touch (Instrumental)" by Spanky Wilson & QSO, "Wildflower" by Nostalgia 77, "Dis-Information (12-inch mix)" by Lanu, "Happy" by Bamboo, "Paintings & Journeys" by Quantic Soul Orchestra, "It'll Be OK" by Dirty Diggers feat Fourteen Corners and more. ✨✧ Kylie AuldistJust Say ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
The stunning debut of Kylie Auldist – working here with some great help from The Bamboos! Kylie's sung with the group in the past, and the album's produced by Bamboos mainmain Lance Ferguson – who also plays on the record too – but the style is much more complicated than that combo's deep funk, and more in a classic 60s female soul mode – with echoes of both UK and US styles in the genre! The production is wonderful – clear, clean, and captivating – with a rich array of instrumentation that moves the set past regular retro-funk cliches to embrace a much wider range of classic soul sounds. Titles include "Make Me Want More", "Still Into You", "Just Say", "Community Service Announcement", "No Use", "Pretty Things", "Gotsta Get Me Some", and "That's Why". (Deep Funk, New Grooves) CD
