Benny SingsCity Pop ... LP
Stones Throw, 2019. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
We've loved the music of Benny Sings for years – and can't understand why the man's not a much bigger success at a worldwide level – because his songs have the gentle soul and careful construction of the sorts of music that used to grace the airwaves decades back! Yet maybe the obscurity is always what makes Benny so great – as the songs here feel like lost AOR gems from a time when folks really knew how to make a record – but also sifted down to a core approach that never lets things get too overly-polished or commercial – kind of that modern love of classic modes that we also find in the music of Ed Motta, even though Ed's a very different singer overall. Titles include "Familiar", "Not Enough", "Duplicate", "Dreamin", "Summerlude", "Everything I Know", and "Nakameguro". (Neo Soul, New Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry PaperLike A Baby ... CD
Stones Throw, 2018. New Copy ... $8.99 9.99
Spare moogy tunes from Jerry Paper – a singer who sounds about as you might expect from the cover, but who also has a surprisingly catchy style as well! Jerry clearly loves sounds from the past – as there's bits of AOR and boogie soul at work on the album – but he also never tries to do too much, and the real charm of the record is its simplicity – its strong reliance on keyboards next to Paper's vocals, which themselves never overdo things either. We really appreciate that Jerry's not trying to pitch himself as another blue-eyed singer for the LA scene – and find ourselves surprisingly charmed by tunes that include "Your Cocoon", "Grey Area", "Commercial Break", "Everything Borrowed", "Hugh Laughs", and "Losing The Game". SteoplesSix Rocks ... LP
Stones Throw, 2017. Sealed ... $11.99
A record that's as stark as its cover – a very cool collaboration from LA beatmaker GB (Gifted & Blessed) and British singer Yeofi Andoh – done in a style that may well be opening up whole new frontiers for underground cosmic soul! The record's got a nicely rough vibe – songs that emerge equally from the beats and vocals, but never with a polished feel at all – almost as if they're being improvised in the studio, as both artists try to bring their best to the proceedings, while also respecting the space of the other. The album's definitely one of the most offbeat in years from Stones Throw – but we mean that in the best way possible – and the whole thing is a great antidote to the kind of soul that's too easily fed up the food chain from the underground to the mainstream. Titles include "Fated", "Best", "We Like The Dark", "Real Enough To Be", "Six Rocks", "Roles", and "Courting Sunshine". (Neo Soul, New Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Savath & SavalasLa Llama ... CD
Stones Throw, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
The best work yet from Guillermo Scott Herren's most organic venue in his ever expanding world of aural mood mastery – the early 70s South American folk psychedelia inspired trio Savath & Savalas – the group's first album for Stones Throw! Eva Puyuelo Muns brings hushed, lovely vocals, sometimes harmonizing with male voices, and Herren's textured atmosphere blends post Tropicalia Brazilian psych folk influences with ambient experimentalism incredibly well! The group pinpoints the early 70s sounds that were happening in Brazil, specifically in Recife, Brazil, but we're hearing some pretty spacey stuff from the electronic experimentalist realms in the sound, too (up to and including Guillermo's work as Prefuse 73) – and it's pretty amazing that Herren, Muns and Roberto Carlos Lange are crafting grooves in a coherent way with such disparate influences. Titles include "La Llama", "Carajuillo", "Una Cura", "La Loba", "Barceloneta", Postlude", "No Despierta", "Adeu" and more. (Rock, New Grooves) CD
