Two groovy groovy tracks! You may recognize "La Coda Del Diavolo" from it's recent use in a TV commercial – or remember it, as we do, from Conte's sublime Jet Sounds album – and it's given a great push here by the Karminsky Brothers, who mix vibes, sound snippets, and flutey vocals together wonderfully! Fred P offers up two very fresh takes on these cuts from the team of Nicola Conte and Gianluca Petrella – both nice and long, and with a sense of flow that's really wonderful! "African Spirits" comes across with a tribal house sort of vibe – lots of live instrumentation on percussion and trombone, but also a percolating groove that stretches into more house-based energy as the tune moves on! Two of our favorite mixers take on some great work from Nicola Conte – each making the tunes very much their own! DJ Spinna brings plenty of soul to "New World Shuffle" – letting the tune crackle and build over the long space of eight minutes – while Bridgette Amofah sings lyrics over the warmly flowing groove! Two great cuts get a nice warming-over! Tall Black Guy takes the mix of acoustic percussion and keyboard lines on "Nigeria", and really deepens the soul – adding vocals from Broken Keys, and coming up with a clubbier vibe for the cut overall – one that has some nice currents for the tribal house crowd! 2 wicked Latin jazz jammers – both issued here for the first time on vinyl! Nicola Conte's beautiful groover "Nefertiti" may well be one of the best things he ever recorded – a midtempo Latinish number that builds on snapping drums, warm bass, and sweet wordless vocals – drifting into the mix right before the tune's core instrumentation of vibes, piano, and horns kick in! "Gica's Dance" is an equally well-done track – again with more great vibes and percussion – created by Gerardo Frisina in a style that's very similar to that of Conte's. Gianluca Petrella has come a long way since his initial work as a straight jazz trombonist – and has really risen up with his Cosmic Renaissance project as a bold messenger of righteous energy in the 21st Century! The set's just an EP, but it's got a flowing, spiritual quality that makes the whole thing feel much fuller overall – core instrumentation from Petrella on a variety of instruments, and a small combo that features percussion from Riccardo Di Vinci and trumpet from Mirco Rubegni – but with key work from guests who include Soweto Kinch on vocals and tenor on the track "Universal Language" – and Anna Bassy on vocals on the cut "Connection (revisited)". The 3rd album by The Dining Rooms (in case you couldn't guess by the title!) – and the best so far! These guys have really matured from earlier outings – moving into a sophisticated realm of downtempo soundscapes crafted with a great deal of care, and which are put together with a lot more than simple tricks and gimmicks. There's loads of really solid tunes in here – sly numbers that sneak up on you with a subtle approach to the craft, gently burrowing in and taking root – somehow making the album that much more compelling overall. A number of tracks have some wonderfully languid vocals, some male and some female – and these tunes fall nicely next to instrumental numbers with a very evocative approach. The cover image is a bit different than the modernist images usually used for records by Italian maestro Gerardo Frisina, and the sound is a bit different too – maybe less Latin or Brazilian than some of his previous records, but still filled with lots of percussion at the core! There's plenty of live drums and percussion next to the rhythm patterns created by Gerardo – and the percussion is especially strong throughout, really grounding the tunes nicely, often with strong conga work – amidst other instrumentation that includes vibes, flute, trumpet, and Fender Rhodes! The album has some slight use of kora, which is great – and the whole thing is another groovy feather in the mighty cap of a musician who's been giving us great records for many years. "Voices Of The Jungle" still has all the earthy elements we love in Gerardo's music – acoustic piano and percussion, and an overall spirit that echoes the late 50s exotic years – yet Maurizio also kicks things up with a house-heavy bassline at the bottom, which drives the tune in a very different way! A jazzy group, but one that's not straight jazz either – as they work with a strongly rhythmic vibe that's somewhere between classic fusion and some of the contemporary sounds we love on Schema Records – maybe no surprise as this combo also hails from the Italian scene as well! There's a great mix of keyboards in the music – Korg Sigma, Fender Rhodes, Yamaha CP70, and Farfisa Synthorchestra – the latter of which sounds especially great, and gives the music some great spacey touches around the edges. Rhythms are all live, and have some great currents from classic boogie and late 70s club – but the vocals on most tracks bring in a special sort of vibe, in part because the singers shift, and the lyrics are in Italian. A compelling set of club jazz work from Italy – proof that the nation's scene has plenty to offer besides well known work on Schema Records! We really dug the previous album from Berardi Jazz Connection, and this set is equally great – a sweet-stepping batch of jazz tracks that runs between modal numbers and soulful grooves – served up in a blend of instrumentation that includes Fender Rhodes, sax, trumpet, guitar, bass, and drums – used in varying ways from track to track, and occasionally augmented by a bit of soulful female vocals. The rhythms here are very much in the best spirit of the contemporary club jazz scene, but are also pretty fresh too – a bit more loosened up from the straight Schema mode, and inflected with a wider range of soulful influences. Titles include "To Brian", "O Prazer De Ser", "The Renegade", "Relax", "FDP", "Play Kid", "Friendly", "Lies", and "Last Night A Cat Stopped Me". CD

A classic set from one of the best groups of the downtempo generation – and one of the few whose work we still turn to all these years later! The Dining Rooms move in the same space as early Kruder & Dorfmeister or Mo Wax, but also bring in some jazzier elements at times too – just the smallest kernels of the sorts of sounds that would later land them on Schema Records – but used in really nice ways, to give their music a lot more depth than most of their contemporaries. A wonderful album of straight ahead jazz – cut by a current combo from Italy, but done with a really classic sound! The style here is a bit like that of the straighter jazz albums on Schema Records – all acoustic, but often highly rhythmic – and focused in styles that explore older Italian modal jazz of the 60s, as well as some of the deeper shadings of the Blue Note scene from years back! The lineup is incredibly strong – with tenor from Daniele Scannapieco, trumpet from Fabrizio Bosso, and piano from Luca Mannutza, whose firm work and bold notes on the keys really give the album a lot of drive and fire! Hard to believe it's the 30th Anniversary for Incognito – but Bluey's been at it for that long, and to celebrate, he's having one hell of a party with this record! The album's got way more going on than even a regular Incognito set – even though those are plenty darn great – as Bluey's invited plenty of folks along for the celebration, a range of great singers who really open up the sound, and deepen the core jazzy grooves of the set! In addition to regular vocalists like Joy Rose, Tony Momrelle, and Maysa, the set also features work by Leon Ware, Chaka Khan, John-Christian Urich, Ursula Rucker, Vanessa Haynes, and Mario Biondi – the last of whom really brings a lot to the set, with that cool vocal approach used on his Schema albums. And as usual for Bluey, the sound is way more than just straight soul – with plenty of classic jazz funk elements, and a strong nod to the underground sounds of the British scene who've always fostered his music. The first full length set from Radio Citizen – shifting his name a bit since his first EP for Ubiquity, and coming off here with an even deeper sound! The groove here is somewhat the same as that great debut – a mix of downtempo beats, jazzy flourishes, and some surprising soul vocals from the enigmatic Bajka – who sings on 6 of the album's tracks! Instrumental numbers often mix warmer sounds on acoustic bass, Fender Rhodes, or other instruments – in a way that hits a jazzier groove on the best numbers, almost in a Schema mode at times. Yet we've gotta say that the vocal cuts really stand out the most – and Bajka's enigmatic singing graces the tunes "The Hop", "El Cielo", "Everything", "Voices", "Championsound", and "Nightingale". The genius of Jerome Richardson – remixed! Richardson's funky flute and searing tenor work have appeared on some of our favorite jazz groove classics – both European and American – and here, two of his tunes are made by Nicola Conte and Panoptikum! Conte uses a host of extra musicians – vibes, piano, alto, and vocals – to expand Richardson's "Way In Blues" with an incredibly groovy and snapping sort of sound. Schema jazz meets the classic MPS groove – with incredible results! Great spiritual grooves from Web Web – a group who've always had a warm blend of electric and acoustic elements, but who take things further in this second collaboration with Max Herre – who brings in all sorts of keyboards and drum machine bits to the music! The core style is still jazz, with excellent tenor and flute from reedman Tonk Lakatos, whose presence really gives the album a soulful vibe – next to the core leading energy of Roberto Di Gioia, who works on a whole host of instruments – organ, mellotron, trumpet, guitar, piano, and even harp! There's other percussion in the group, warm basslines from Christian Von Kaphengst, and guest performances from a variety of others – including the great Carlos Nino on two tracks – all in a style that's got more of the warmth of Schema Records than the usual Compost sound. Great spiritual grooves from Web Web – a group who've always had a warm blend of electric and acoustic elements, but who take things further in this second collaboration with Max Herre – who brings in all sorts of keyboards and drum machine bits to the music! The core style is still jazz, with excellent tenor and flute from reedman Tonk Lakatos, whose presence really gives the album a soulful vibe – next to the core leading energy of Roberto Di Gioia, who works on a whole host of instruments – organ, mellotron, trumpet, guitar, piano, and even harp! There's other percussion in the group, warm basslines from Christian Von Kaphengst, and guest performances from a variety of others – including the great Carlos Nino on two tracks – all in a style that's got more of the warmth of Schema Records than the usual Compost sound.
