Alessandro AlessandroniAfro Discoteca Reworked EP ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1978/2020. New Copy ... $22.99
Four fantastic tracks from the Afro Discoteca record by sound library genius Alesseandro Alessandroni – all reworked in contemporary versions, yet in a way that never loses the funky charm of the originals! There's a real respect for classic styles going on here – partly because the choice of remixers is so strong, the project features just the right sort of artists to keep things right, while still also adding in their own contributions too – maybe some extra keyboards or subtle electronic elements that never get in the way of the original tribal disco inspiration! Titles include "Afro Voodoo (Bovisa rmx with Calibro 35)", "Afro Darkness (Pad rmx)", "Afro Discoteca (Jolly Mare lifting)", and "Afro Darkness (LUCA quirky version)". Brand New HeaviesShelter ... LP
Delicious Vinyl, 1997. Near Mint- 2LP ... $24.99
An overlooked mid 90s set from The Brand New Heavies – not as hitbound as some of their earlier work, but still plenty darn great – recorded with a strong emphasis on the vocals, and a no-nonsense soul sound that's always refreshing! There's one or two instrumentals on the album, but most of the tracks are vocal numbers in an R&B mode – yet still with plenty of the best old school touches we expect from The Heavies, and an overall sound that's quite different than most of their contemporaries. Titles include "I Like It", "Shelter", "Feels Like Right", "Day By Day", "Once Is Twice Enough", "You Can Do It", "Stay Gone", "After Forever", "Last To Know", and "Highest High". ✨✧ Brand New HeaviesTBNH ... CD
Acid Jazz (UK), 2019. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Excellent work from The Brand New Heavies – one of those groups that made us first want to get into the record store business many years ago! The passage of time hasn't dimmed their genius at all – and right as at the start, the music here is flowing with classic funk and soul influences, but leaned up into a groove that's very contemporary – and which continues to stand head and shoulders above the generations of artists who've been inspired by their sound! As you might notice by the cover, the core duo of Simon Bartholomew and Andrew Levy are the key force of the sound – but their longtime partner N'Dea Davenport is on vocals for many tracks on the set – replaced at a few points by guests who include Laville, Angie Stone, Angela Ricci, Beverley Knight, and Siedah Garrett – a nicely shifting lineup that almost give the record the variety of a classic Incognito set. Titles include "Stupid Love", "Just Believe In You", "Get On The Right Side", "Little Dancer", "It's My Destiny", "Getaway", "Beautiful", "Wired Up", "Together", and "Dontchawanna". CeuApka ... CD
Six Degrees, 2020. New Copy ... On June 26, 2020
Ceu seems to be an even stronger singer here than before – still able to drift in and out of an easygoing rhythm when she wants, but also more suited to take on tunes with a more soulful vibe – which includes a number of standout tunes that really make the record shine! There's still some of the nods towards older Brazilian styles that graced Ceu's earlier albums, but many of the numbers here sparkle with a more contemporary vibe – never overdone, but a nice blend of subtle rhythms and guitar lines from Pedro Sa – mostly moving at a midtempo pace that's just right for the vocals. Marc Ribot plays guitar on a few tracks, Seu Jorge guests on another, and titles include "Nada Irreal", "Coreto", "Forcar O Verao", "Corpocontinente", "Off", "Fenix Do Amor", and "Ocitocina". Nicola CruzSiku ... CD
Xtra Mile (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
Nicola Cruz has a very unusual style here – one that mixes percussion, wooden flutes, and some occasional contemporary production touches – almost in a way that bridges ancient musical modes and 21st Century spirits – but at a level that's always far less gimmicky than that description might make you expect! The key to the record is its adherence to the idea that less is more – so that the tunes never try to fit too much in the mix, and always have this organic vibe that's mighty nice – and understated in all the right ways. Titles include "Siku", "Siete", "Criancada", "El Diablo Me Va A Llevar", "Arka", "Okami", "Senor De Las Piedras", and "Esu Enia". CD

Kirk Degiorgio Presents SambatekSambatek ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2013. Used ... $6.99
Brazilian percussion mixed with 21st Century sounds – all served up sublimely in the hands of Kirk Degiorgio – one of the few artists we could ever expect to get a project like this just right! The album follows nicely off Kirk's previous collaboration with Azymuth – but has an even starker sound overall, as core acoustic percussion bits are worked into contemporary rhythm programs – then topped with some of the crackling electric touches that you'd expect – often with a warmer sound than other projects of this nature, but a groove that's plenty driving overall. Titles include "Babilonia", "Morro Da Formiga", "Dende", "Borel", "Vidigal", "Rocinha", "Prazeres", and "Complexo Do Alemao" – plus remixes "Babilonia (Rick Wilhite dub)", "Borel (Jonas Kopp my vision of samba rmx)", and "Borel (Nxi rmx)". Family AtlanticaCosmic Unity (with bonus download) ... LP
Soundway (UK), 2016. New Copy ... $22.99
The title certainly gets it right – as there's a strongly unified sense of spirit here from Family Atlantica – even more so than on their debut album! As before, there's a range of global elements moving through the mix – currents of South American and African styles, given a slightly more contemporary European presentation – but somehow these guys have really found a way to put everything together with an even tighter, more cohesive sound – one that expands through jazzy solo work on tenor, alto, trumpet, and trombone – and which really draws a lot from the wide range of percussion and other instrumentation used by co-leader Jack Yglesias. The lovely Luzmira Zerpa handles most of the vocals – and some percussion too – and the album also features guest appearances from 70s legends Orlando Julius on tenor and Marshal Allen on alto sax. Titles include "Baiao Infinito", "Near The Ocean", "Efik", "Cosmic Unity", "Canto De Pilon", "El Rio", "Cacao", "Okoroba", and "Neti Neti". (Global Grooves, New Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ KonOn My Way ... CD
BBE (UK), 2013. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
The first full album we've ever heard from Kon – and a really soulful set that follows strongly off his famous mixtapes and compilations with Amir! As on those gems, there's a very classic sound going on here – a strong love of the best moments of 70s soul, funk, and club – delivered with some surprisingly contemporary inflections at times – mostly in the way Kon uses studio elements to help wrap together his influences in a seamless, effortless groove! Rhythms step up strongly at all the right moments – sometimes club funk, sometimes a bit more soulful house – and the album features guest appearances from Amy Douglas, Georg Levin, Induce, and Ben Westbeech – plus some mixing help from Caserta. The overall mix of classic and contemporary is somewhere in the Joey Negro/Sunburst Band mode – and titles include "All Night", "She Was A Queen", "Awe Baby", "Don'tcha Wanna", "Blow Me A Kis", "On My Way", "Love Shine", and "You Don't Know". Mental AbstratoUzoma ... LP
SDB Discos, 2019. New Copy 2LP ... $19.99 21.98
Really great work from a Brazilian combo that somehow manages to work in a mode that's completely rootsy, but also completely contemporary too! The music here mixes together heavy percussion, bits of jazz, and just the right touches on keyboards, beats, and samples – so that the organic and electric elements are perfectly balanced – at a level that's wonderfully illuminating, and which shifts nicely from track to track on the album – partly because of some of the guests who appear throughout. Titles include "Khamisi", "O Mar", "Mr Cal", "For You", "James Bongo", "Blue Skies", "Afroonirico", "Suco De Acerola", "Samambaia Rainha", and "Down". (Brazil, New Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

NicolayCity Lights Vol 3 – Soweto ... CD
Foreign Exchange, 2015. Used ... $5.99
Brightly lit, breezily soulful grooves from Nicolay's globetrotting City Lights series – inspired by a +FE tour stop in South Africa – and it may be the best City Lights set yet! One thing we love about the series, and the Soweto entry in particular, is that Nicolay isn't out to copy the exact sounds you'd hear in classic or contemporary South African dance music, as much as he's doing his own distinct thing, as inspired by it. Some occasional vocals, especially the spoken narrative passages by Nomusa Nzima set the Soweto scene, and the South African rhythmic sensibility is a big part of the vibe, but it's got a broad, richly appealing vibe overall.. The keyboards walk the line between spacey and sophisticated, there's some great vocal contributions from Phonte, Carmen Rodgers and Tamisha Waden. Wonderful! Includes "Tomorrow", "It's In The Way That You Smile", "Aurora", "Sun Rings/Uprising", "Daydream", "Sawubona", "The Secret" and "There Is A Place For Us". CD

✨✧ SpenceLove Adventure EP (with bonus track) ... 12-inch
Austin Boogie Crew, 2017. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Sweet electro funk from Danny Spence – a set of instrumentals that draw from an 80s mode, but deliver the sounds in a very contemporary style – especially the way they splash together the rhythms and basslines at the bottom end of the sonic spectrum! The tunes are simple and unadorned, but pretty darn catchy nonetheless – with a bit of brightness on the keyboard lines over the deeper rhythms – and grooves that mostly move in a midtempo mode that underscores the tunefulness of the melodies! Titles include "Goodnight", "Mai Tai", "Love Adventure", "Sand", and "Ear To Ear". (Neo Soul, New Grooves) 12-inch, Vinyl record

Starship 9Starship 9 (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Cinevox (Italy), 2018. Used ... $6.99
A pretty cool contemporary group – one who are lucky enough to record for the legendary Cinevox soundtrack label, and who have a sound that definitely matches the vibe of that company's long legacy of music! The style here is very cinematic at times – with some slinky, groovy moments that feel like they're lifted right from 60s or 70s Italian film scores – but there's also a fair bit of vocals, too – lyrics that kind of slide in and out of the music in a nice way, again almost like a vocal tune on a cinematic outing – although a few even feel like some of our favorite British indie work of the early 80s.. Titles include "Cinema Roma", "Love Premiere", "Home Again", "Andromeda", "Berlin", "Stelvio FM", "Dedicato A Una Stella", and "Dust & Flowers". Also includes the bonus tracks "Stelvio (Quei Giorni Insieme)" and "Home Again (vocoder mix)". CD

The album has Dimitri following up the first Playboy Mansion compilation with a sublime blend of older club classics and some newer underground numbers – all infused with the soulful house spirit of the crackling Parisian scene! BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s/2016. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
The archive here appears to be Volcov's own record collection – but that's A-OK with us, because he's got some wonderfully groovy, wonderfully soulful, wonderfully under-discovered records he wants to share with us! The set's got a wicked blend of obscure tracks from decades back, and some contemporary cuts that share a similar vibe – music that's in a really special place between soul, jazz, and fusion – often with a cosmic vibe that gives the whole collection a very righteous sound! Liner notes are by Patrick Forge, who points out how obscure most of these tracks are, and what a special collection this is – and we definitely agree with his words, as most of these tracks are new to us, too. Titles include "Keep The Same Old Feeling" by Hot Quisine, "Do The Right Thing" by JOB, "Go (Chez Damien classic mix)" by The Urban Cru, "The Sound Of The Memory Of Many Living People" by Are & Be, "Arigo (Volcov edit)" by Manfredo Fest, "Turning On To Me" by Oneness Of Juju, "Footprints On The Sand (Shannon Harris Urbanicity reinterpretation)" by Chanan Hanspal, "Sophisticated Disco (Volcov edit)" by O'Donel Levy, "Simon's Melody" by The Antilles, "Part 4" by Shakazulu, and "Sun On My Back" by Bembe Segue. Bruton Music (UK), Early 70s/2019. New Copy ... $19.99
A fresh take on the sound library genius of Bruton – one of the coolest UK commercial studios of the 70s, remixed here by a host of contemporary talents! There's plenty of vintage Bruton tracks that are heavy on soundtrack-styled funk and jazz – and they prove to be a perfect blueprint here – especially for the cuts that take things more towards a hip hop perspective, which turns out to be a perfect use of the Bruton groove! Titles include "Bold" by Mr Thing, "Jack The Ripper" by Soundsci, "Feels Right" by Chris Read & Pugz Atomz, "DNGR" by Bigg Kid, "Been There Done That" by Sup Nasa, and "Robotik" by Mark Rae. ✨✧ VariousTotally Wired & Illicit Grooves – Acid Jazz – The Birth Of A Scene 1987 to 1990 ... CD
Acid Jazz/BGP (UK), Late 80s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Tremendous grooves from the earliest (and best) years of the acid jazz scene – all recorded at a time when London was exploding with sounds from the 60s and 70s, and turning out some of the hippest music on the planet! Although the term "acid jazz" was soon mishandled and mis-managed here in the US, the earliest days of the movement were really a tremendous time in London – a period when folks returned to the core elements that made funk, jazz, and soul great – and shook off all of the too-electric and too-stiff modes that had crept in during the 80s! Most of the work here is in a really spare, stripped-down funky mode – a cross between soul jazz of the 60s and blacksploitation funk of the 70s, with possibly a few more contemporary elements thrown into the mix. And in these years way before the current deep funk revival, what's even more important is the way these songs were produced – with a warmth that other groups hadn't had in years, and a real love of the way these tracks might have sounded in older studios a few decades before. The package contains a number of key rare singles from the Acid Jazz label, other album tracks, and even a few classics that had a big influence on the London scene. Titles include the rare pre-Acid Jazz single "Got To Give" by The Brand New Heavies, the sublime "Rejoice In Righteousness" by Bukky Leo Quintet, and the tracks "Cut & Run" by Lay Zee Muthas, "Like A Gun" by King Truman, "The Killer" by Night Trains, "People Get Ready" by The Brand New Heavies, "Haw Right Now" by Patrice Rushen, "Earthly Powers" by Man Called Adam, "Mr PC" by Snowboy, "Spinning Wheel" by New Jersey Kings, "Let The Good Times Roll" by The Quiet Boys, and "Mighty Mouse" by Caesar Frazier. Loads of great notes too – a really detailed look at the London scene at the end of the 80s! CD
