The sound here is wonderfully soulful – a style that draws from a legacy of grooves that stretches back to Stevie Wonder, but which has some of the leaner qualities of the British scene in the wake of groups like Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai! 70s influences abound, but they're never cliched, and used in just the right doses alongside some more contemporary rhythms on the bottom – and perhaps best of all, the set features vocals from a great range of guests – including Omar, Vanessa Freeman, Joy Rose, Darien, and Tony Momrelle. A hard-driving mix of soulful house tracks – put together by Yukihiro Fukutomi, whose own work is pretty darn soulful too! The set skips along in a really pulsating groove – one that has a surprising amount of acoustic percussion percolating around the bottom of the rhythms, while rolling bass, sweet keyboards, and soaring vocals push the top end up to the skies! Miles Davis gets remixed and funked up for the hip hop generation – with surprisingly tasteful, even welcome head-nodding results – with appearances by Nas on a rhyme, and Carlos Santana on guitar – plus trumpet by Nas's pops Olu Dara – and loads of fresh remix grooves! If you're like us, you generally recoil a little bit at the thought of modern revisions of our heroes' legacies, but this short & sweet set does a fine job of incorporating modern funky drum programming, Rhodes, percussion – with both electric and acoustic elements & percussion that work very well with Miles' seductive groove. A nice surprise! Quite possibly the hippest work so far from the mighty Mark De Clive-Lowe – an album that almost comes across more like a spiritual jazz session than some of Mark's clubbier sides of the past! There's a lot of live, spontaneous energy to most of the tracks – and although there's clearly some beats at the bottom of the tunes, the album's also filled with freely creative lines on tenor, flute, percussion, and keyboards – recorded with a wonderful sense of warmth, and given almost a sort of Impulse Records sense of righteousness. Bembe Segue also sings on the set, but at some points the main focus is definitely instrumental – with Mark playing Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano, in addition to percussion, bass, and synth. Prefuse 73 is in fine, psychedelic hip hop instrumentalist form on Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian – if you saw the cover art and feared some prog rock fever dream, you can relax – this is a hypnotic suite of kaleidoscopic and atmospheric soundscapes par excellence! The track list is 29 long, and mostly quite short – reminding is of Madlib's Beat Konducta series in that regard, but beyond that and the generally wordless vibe, Prefuse is an sound architect all his own. Whether stuttering, busily clattering sounds or hazy and more mesmerizing, there's a broad sonic palette here well worth exploring.
