The vibe here is a lot more Strata and spiritual than the style you'd expect from Jazzanova – as they take on tunes by label legends like Lyman Woodard, Kenny Cox, Sam Sanders, Maulawi, and other talents from the same Motor City underground of the 70s that gave the world Tribe Records. Instrumentation is a blend of Fender Rhodes and lots of live jazz work on flute, tenor, trombone, and trumpet – sometimes topped with vocals from Sean Haefeli, who really helps open up the soulful side of the tunes! Hard to believe it's the 30th Anniversary for Incognito – but Bluey's been at it for that long, and to celebrate, he's having one hell of a party with this record! The album's got way more going on than even a regular Incognito set – even though those are plenty darn great – as Bluey's invited plenty of folks along for the celebration, a range of great singers who really open up the sound, and deepen the core jazzy grooves of the set! In addition to regular vocalists like Joy Rose, Tony Momrelle, and Maysa, the set also features work by Leon Ware, Chaka Khan, John-Christian Urich, Ursula Rucker, Vanessa Haynes, and Mario Biondi – the last of whom really brings a lot to the set, with that cool vocal approach used on his Schema albums. The album's got a freshness and brilliance that takes us back to the first time we heard Omar, Jamiroquai, or Lewis Taylor – kind of an instant smile that hits our face after the first few notes of each tune – a joy of discovery that's every bit as rewarding as the music itself! Ben's warm vocals are mixed nicely with subtle arrangements that get slightly cosmic, but never too much so – and which instead always veer towards organic territory that beautifully respects the lyrics of the tunes, and Westbeech's role as soul singer first and foremost. Fantastic work from this group headed by keyboardist IG Culture – a set that takes us into even jazzier territory than some of his more famous early work, thanks to key contributions from members of the London scene! The record is definitely a group collaboration – not just backdrops from IG with added instrumentation – and the lineup features trombone from Nathaniel Cross, tenor from Deji Ijishakan, drums from Benjamin Appiah, and additional keyboards from Dwayne Kilvington – plus a bit of vocals from Allysha Joy and Tyrone Isaac Stuart, who each appear on a track. As with so much post-4Hero work from the London scene, the set's just an EP, but has the depth of a full album – on titles that include "The Remedy", "Vanguard", "The Score", and "Givin Up". A killer classic from Moodymann, aka Kenny Dixon – a record that's perfectly in that new wave of Detroit sounds that helped push things past the early years of techno in the Motor City, while still holding onto the stark, spare sound that made the city such a different scene than Chicago! Dang, these guys have really come a long way since their last album – into territory that's even more soulfully uplifting! Jazzin Park work very strongly in that upbeat, all-soul mode that we loved in some of our favorite Japanese artists from years back – that positive groove we remember from the early years of Monday Michiru – carried beautifully here into the 21st Century by the Jazzin Park duo, with help from guests who include Heather Johnson, Emi Tawata, Ryohei, and others. Daniel Maunick's been giving us music in many forms for years – working as Venom on remixes, handling work with Incognito, and a range of other projects – but stepping out in the spotlight on his own is a relatively new thing to Maunick – and a great showcase for all sorts of musical ideas he's never been able to express this well! Given his ties to both Incognito and the Far Out label, there's some great currents of both London soul and global grooves in Daniel's work – but the blend comes across at a level that's very free from any of his roots – kind of a step forward for the cosmic generation of the early 21st Century, with elements that are as planted on the ground as they are soaring to the skies.
